    To Joe Pishner:

I am a Democrat. As far as what "Democrats take for a life" ... well, I'm a small business owner, a proud parent of two, a husband, a social liberal and fiscal conservative.

Above all I try to look at things through my OWN eyes, not the goon goggles handed to me by either party. THAT is why I took issue with your comment.

And for the record, I am not trying to destroy this nation and I am seriously offended that you would make such a comment. Anyone who levels that charge had better have some SOLID data to back it up. And as far as the war?

We may be winning the military battles. However, you can not fight an "ism" with weapons; people don't change their way of thinking at the point of a sword. They have to be brought around on their own. And having some belligerent, narrow-minded, slack-jawed, gap-toothed yokel in the White House like we've had for the past seven years doesn't seem to be doing the trick, as shocking as that might seem ...

What about the things Obama has already accomplished? It was interesting to watch a Congressman being asked this very same question last night and he couldn't name a single thing that Obama accomplished during his time as a state representative and a Senator. Why is it that no one can provide an answer to this particular question? I want a president who can actually back up what he's saying, and from what I've learned about Obama, I'm not sure if he can do this.

Is it me, or is his "uniter" rhetoric not represented here.

It seems he has an equal amount of detractors as supporters. HMMM.

And they say HRC is dividing the party. I say it is him.

I think the author is attempting to justify an quantifiable meaning behind the candidates. He is is essential making an observation that McCain and Clinton have expereince leading a nation and not just a state. Although no one contends that Sen. Obama is the better speaker, we all know that rhetoric without substance will always fizzle. His accomplishments in the Illinois State Senate are commendable, but a state senator's focus on policies only relate to the vacuum he/she represents. Barak has shown great leaderhip in the state senate, but has yet to prove that he understands how to achieve the nations best interests through the ways and means provided. Hence, the reason why this author has come to his own personal belief.

Well said. This has been my perception all along. At times I would doubt it because of the media and the increasing number of followers. Then I hear him speak and realize that I am right. He has no realistic sense of how he's going to achieve what he is preaching. He might think he does. How naive is the idea that he can remove all troops from Iraq within a year? Yet, he says it as if there are no real obstacles or serious consideration to doing so. It's kind of scary in reality. Most people in the world are followers so it does not suprise me that this is happening. Just incredibley unfortunate especially with the serious problems this country faces right now. I'd much rather see someone like Hillary, ready to go and willing to work to get things accomplished in realistic ways and timeframes. She really knows what it takes.

Obama's rhetoric is my reality and I will support him all the way. You are correct on one point. Clinton and McCain are "known quantities"-----ONES I DON'T WANT!

Hillary is full of rhetoric herself ! Healthcare for everyone. Never mentions how to pay for it. NAFTA never made more high paying jobs for americans. Is this where "Experience" comes into play?

  • Posted By: membery @ 02/20/2008 11:50:35 AM

I think it is obvious to everyone (or at least it should be) that any one who truly addresses America's real problems will not win any popular vote. Look at history - no one ever wants to here the bad news. Stop spending friviously, buy smarter, improve your mental health, forgive eachother, be more compasionate, don't fear death so much, feel lucky for having any medical coverage, eat less, sleep more, use mass transit systems, Think - Would you vote for that platform?

    • Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 12:52:00 PM

Are you saying people should then just vote for "fluff"? We have problems; they need to be solved. Obama isn't going to solve them with "hope". Please, don't give me a sermon about hope. You don't know about my life and what every day brings to me. I have to hope EVERYDAY. But, I know I have to act also; I have to plan.

Unfortunately, the black vote which largely look like 70-30 or 80-20 to Obama versus Hispanic and white vote (which reflect close matches, 45-55 ratios, most often in Hllary's favor) shows a scary trend- a large population that votes by sight not the ability to listen. Hillary fares very well among those who look and listen. Neither gender nor color work for her. Hispanic voter and white voter seem to have a blanced approach to considering candidates. The mass hysteria among black voters is the edge, not education as the Obama campaign and media tout. Thanks for a great article!

Spoken like a true racist. Look at the numbers. He is highest among educated voters and young voters..... try again.

      • Posted By: j_ashus @ 02/20/2008 12:50:16 PM

I knew the 'race card' would show up sooner or later. I don't know which category x2c2 fits into 'highly educated' or 'young voters'. If it's the 'young voters' I can understand young people getting all hyped up over someone like Obama. . So you must consider yourself 'highly educated'. .........try again.

Spoken like a true sheep following the herd. You know as well as anyone how lopsided the demographic numbers are. It's not racist to say it, it's fact! Get your head out of the clouds.

I am Hillary Clinton and I approve this message.

  • Posted By: astaria @ 02/20/2008 12:49:51 PM

It blesses me to hear someone saying it like it is. Moreover, this article gives me hope that I still have a wee bit of sanity because I am not buying into anything Obama says. I am more insulted that others buy into it and feel its more a collective desire of change that brings someone else to do something for you. Trouble is it's going to take all of us to get the job done. Both Clinton and McCain, I could vote for. Not Obama!

Thank you for this article! I needed this kind of hope that others do see the seriousness of looking deeper at Obama and his skills. I think he is too needy to be President and I don't feel to give him the dream that will divide this country. And yes, who is his vice president going to be. How frightful !

    A.

To make a long story short. The same applies to Hillary with all her rhetoric.. Everybody knows problems aren't solved overnight. But I don't believe Healthcare should be shouldered by government. It should be shouldered by employers. NAFTA didn't employ more people with good paying jobs. Is this where all the "experience" gets us?

  • Posted By: daisy_mom4 @ 02/20/2008 12:49:10 PM

What took you people so long to say this??? The 50 percent who didn't drink the kool-aid have been saying this all along!!! I just hope it's not too late seeing the other 50 percent are drunk on his rhetoric and like most that are intoxicated, you can't reason with them! They don't think they are drunk as they yell for more kool-aid! As we all know MORE is not going to solve the problems of this country! In proving they are not racist by voting a black man with empty words and not enough experience, they have once again proven they are sexist by not voting for a woman with the experience to address the problems we face! I am disgusted by the media providing the kool-aid as much as I am the people for drinking it in blindly just as they did Bush's crap, not once but twice! No wonder America is in the shape she is, The people are self destructive and gulliable!!! God help this country from itself!!!!

He borrowed Hillary's Economic plan and green collar idea.

  • Posted By: Gail.Sheehan @ 02/20/2008 12:48:21 PM

No candidate can (or does) guarantee all their positions will be turned into policies, but we, as voters, need to know where the potential president is coming from with regard to beliefs, intentions, judgment, credibility with Congress, and ability to have some cohesion for a change instead of divisiveness. As a 50s white female (previously didn't fit the "mold" of an Obama supporter), I think he provides the best opportunity for some things to change. He did, after all, sponsor legislation which made congrressional spending more transparent, he helped lead the fight to pass ethics reform legisltation, sponsored the Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act . Don't believe the rhetoric that he only knows how to give a good speech. Investigate (that goes for the journalist) - that is the key to a successful democracy. We the people have a responsibility to make educated determinations.

I cannot disagree with you more on your assesment of Obama's character. It is obvious you are not an Obama fan and never were. There is plenty of evidence of who he is and what he stands for. In Illinois he is well known to work well with both sides odf the aisles. He is reconciliatory by nature and he is transparent and candid. There is nothing shadowy about him. Before any one says anuthing about his record you should examine look into his legislature record in Illinois and in the SEnate

And where are all those Illinois politicians he worked with? I haven't seen scores of them standing up and shouting his praises.

And just what took so long for a major media outlet to publish this?

If the editor is sick ... I wish he'd get sicker. This article is refreshingly on the mark.
