Don't they all have shallow campaign slogans? I have voted republican my entire life, (yes I am white-american). For the first time I am considering voting Democratic and it wouldn't be for Hillary or McCain. Why - because the Republicans have squandered a golden opportunity, Hillary would have a co-presidency with Bill and McCain (and his wife) would be more of the same. Even us white guys are tired of old white guys!

I agree with Horton. I'm someone who was a republican until Bush, But now I've come to realize that skilled presidents are not defined by their parties, as Reagan and JFK were BOTH great leaders. While I do believe Obamas 'platitudes', and what a sad state of affairs it is when a man comes under fire for optimism, we really have no better options. New blood, the Socialist, or the possibly-senile warmonger? the choice is obvious.

I find it so ironic that people supposed reporters can write this tripe. Look at Obama's legislative record-yes you will have to look at his time in the Illinois Senate as well. You will see a man active in creating change. Compared to Clinton's naming of post offices, he has introduced and sponsored many bills to do just that.
I really don't know what Clinton's stand on things is other than her votes. Do your research.
    Stop being

You are totally missing the point, as is Clinton and McCain. Clinton and McCain want us all to believe that they will be voted into office and they'll "take care of all our problems" or the vast majority of them. Obama makes no such claims. In fact, during his victory speech on Super Tuesday, he clearly stated that tough times and tough decisions lie ahead. He isn't offering to make everything all better with no sacrifice on our part, in fact he has clearly stated on MANY occasions that shared sacrifice will be necessary. What Obama brings that the old guard wants to ignore, is the inspiration to do this together.

Are you kidding me? First, he was an "empty suit" even though there were lots of specific Obama policies. Now, when he offers specific points to the stump, he is the one with "lofty goals". The media keeps moving the goal post as Obama undeniably crush it! Mr. Opinionator, your killer instinct disgust me. Obama is a leader unlike anybody else in our time. Whether you like it or not, he will win and win big. Keep your delusion for yourself, please.

Anyone can 'provide points'. The author is questioning the validity of those points, as ALL voters should. I could promise to make every US citizen a billionaire, but making it come true is the real issue...

He is a suit full of empty retoric that is dangerous in a world we live in.
A leader, he is not. Elvis was not a leader but people love him and would have probably voted for him if he ran for president. BH Obama a Leader, disgusting.

In Mr. Obama's speech last night he stated that he will bring the troops home the in 2009, the same year that he takes office? That statement should make us wonder if this man really understands what the Presidency is all about.

He also states that he wants to be a uniter and not a divider, but in his speech he said that he will work to bring Republicans to his side. He did not say that we will meet in the middle. I guess being united means moving to his side. What a joke this guy is. God help us if he wins.

You are obviously not an Obama supporter and never were. You have not followed this election closely. Read his books and look art his website. It is full of polici. But neverhteless, look what the Bushes have done to our country and what their "experience" has brought. No middle class person in this country is happy witth t heir wages, housing and healthcare. The staus quo doesn't offer anything to those who have lost faith in our country. It is time for change, and Obama is the most qualified candidate to bring about this change. The American voters have seen the possibilities and that is why Obama is winning the primary and the national polls.

  • Posted By: obama08 @ 02/20/2008 12:29:33 PM

It's not that he has some amazing new ideas that no one has ever thought of - that's not his basis for change. His basis for change is that he actually has the ability to get them done - actually doing what everyone else has been talking about for so long is exactly how he's going to change the state of our politics.

Dick Morris was a guest on Sean Hannity's radio show yesterday. He wants Sean to encourage his Republican listeners to vote in the Texas open primary and again to caucas for Obama. Apparently you can vote twice. Reason being was that McCain could beat Obama but not Hillary in the general election, so they want Obama to win. He was dead serious. Check it out for yourselves.

We need to get Obama to outline the steps he would take to get his proposals through congress. Any suggestions as to how we convince him we need to have more that just proposals

If he cuts spending on Iraq, drastically, like he proposes to do at least partly through bringing the troops home, then that makes up much of the difference to fund his policies, although I do agree that the retirement age must be raised. You can't say he has no substance if his plans don't differ much from Hillary's though, many of which he proposed before she did. On the democratic side the read differences are 1) his sense of optimism and his ability to inspire Americans; 2) His willingness to dialogue with foreign powers and take a much more diplomatic approach towards foreign policy; 3) The issue of mandates in a "universal" health care plan [both plans could be attacked for not being politically feasible, and neither address the problem behind rising health care costs: not just the number of unisured, but the extremely high obesity rates]. 4)In a general election match-up with McCain, he is more credible as a candidate who represents change, ecspecially considering most Americans oppose a long term US presence in Iraq.

I'm worried. Is the Newsweek editor OK? Is he sick, or is his child sick? Did he lose a family member? All I know is he must be out of the office for a good reason. There's no other explanation for this piece appearing on the web. This is the first article I've read on Newsweek (and I read it daily) that questions Obama's rhetoric.

Please tell me the editor's OK. Next thing you know I'll be reading an article about Hillary that doesn't question her integrity, motives or abilities. Mr. Editor. . .Please get well soon. I don't want to read a pro-Hillary piece here or anywhere else. I really don't think I could take it.

Seriously...I AM an Obama supporter. But I have to be honest; this magazine promotes Obama as shamelessly as Fox News promoted Rudy G. Despite the fact that I am in favor of your chosen candidate, I cannot condone your actions. The media didn't used to be like this. It used to be that newspapers, magazines and such, you know, REPORTED news. Why the switch? Is there some sort of manufacturer's tax exemption you're trying to qualify for?

Anyway. . .Good work Mr. Samuelson. You got one by the Newsweek spin doctors. I can only assume you have a a better job lined up already. If not, shame on you for risking your family's security on a piece that's a clear example of "too little too late".

Evidently the Bush administration took Barack up on one of his plans. Jan 29, 2008 a Predator launched a missile inside Pakistan, killing the #2 Al-Quada leader. This was done without prior consultation with the Pakistani government. Just a thought.

This is the first article I have seen which punctures the Obama myth. This guy is so vacuous and lacking in content it isn't even funny. What is so ironic is that given his lack of any record or experience at all if he was white and not black he would not have even been in the race. He is certainly an eloquent speaker but one wonders now how much of his speeches are his and how much he poaches from others given the recent exposure. If the media would do its job on this guy he wouldn't be where he is. He is the least qualified candidate I have ever seen get this far in a national election. Compared to either Hillary or McCain this guy doesn't even register. I was supporting Hillary but if she who does have the experience and the policies loses to Obama I would vote for McCain. The reason would be very plain - he would be the only qualified candidate left in the race.

    • Posted By: mhopgood123 @ 02/20/2008 12:12:25 PM

What are you afraid of? Change? There are more people tired of the way things have been running than not. You don't know this candidate because you haven't bothered to read about him. I am from Illinois and he won by a large margin as a senatore because we believe he is for real. He has not let us down. He tirelessly worked for the underprivileged and those who don't have a voice. He is more reconciliatory than Hillary and McCain. He has numerous republican fans in the Illinois legislature who are supporting his candidacy. There is nothing empty about his programs. He wants out of Iraq and is supported by veterans and soldiers who see no end in sight to a war that has put the whole country in such debt that my children's children will have to mortgage thier future. Do I need to say more?

      • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/20/2008 12:27:32 PM

Obama won by a large margin by having 4yr old divorce papers unsealed in order to smear his oponent into dropping out of the race at the last minute, not because peolpe believed in him...

  • Posted By: tommyhi @ 02/20/2008 12:26:31 PM

How much are the Clintons paying you? How is Obama supposed to engage in the nation's major problems, when, so far, he is not in a position to do so! All any of the candidates can do is talk until they are in office. So, why should Obama be criticized for being an eloquent orator?

  • Posted By: mhopgood123 @ 02/20/2008 12:04:28 PM

I could not disagree with this assesment of Obama's character. This author has no idea who Obama really is. Perhaps he has to read some more about his background. I am from Illinois, and we know him really well here. He has devoted all his life to help the underprivileged and he has been nothing but reconciliatory in the Illinois legislature, working with republicans, independents and democrats to bring much needed reform. I was expecting these attacks as he became more prominent and the primary campaign turned in his favor. Please read Obama's books before making further assesments of his character. His Senate website talks about his accomplishments in the Senate. Just because he doesn't have all the political baggage that Hillary and McCain have doesn't mean that he is not right for our country. What are you afraid of, Mr Samuelson, that someone will really bring change to the country and end the status quo? This time the American voters will not buy this kind of

    • Posted By: lamm01 @ 02/20/2008 12:10:53 PM

Well if you like him so much, keep him in Illinois. We don't want him. Oh by the way, are they the same underpriviledged his was selling his drugs to?

      • Posted By: x2c2 @ 02/20/2008 12:26:09 PM

Wrong, we do want him, the numbers don't lie, only people like you do.

mhopgood123, excellent post. To the other person that commented, you are exactly why more people are pulling for Barack.

  • Posted By: JustAHumanBeing @ 02/20/2008 12:26:04 PM

We have to start somewhere, though, and Obama appears to be the best prospect for that. The way this country runs, it will take time, but what's the alternative? 100-year war? Bill Clinton will not be able to control himself if his wife gets elected. It will be a Billary white house if she (they) wins. Obama is the only chance we have for change.

  • Posted By: dak100 @ 02/20/2008 12:25:14 PM

I am a lifelong Democrat, having voted for only Republican in my life: Ronald Reagan. Our country is at a crossroad in its history facing the challenges of those abroad who wish only harm to the United States; an economy that is floundering under debt and entitlement; a two-tired health care network based on insured vs. uninsured; and an ever-increasing dependnence for fuel on countries that sponsor terrorism. Two of the three candidates for President with a significant level of support appear to have the experience and plans to make some progress in the struggles that we face. The other candidate only offers rhetoric that makes us feel good. When challenged on his use of words, he could only use someone else's words without giving the author proper credit.

I was pleased to vote for Senator Clinton in the primary contest and it would now appear as though I, like other Reagan Democrats that I have spoken with, will be supporting Senator McCain this November.
