I'm worried. Is the Newsweek editor OK? Is he sick, or is his child sick? Did he lose a family member? All I know is he must be out of the office for a good reason. There's no other explanation for this piece appearing on the web. This is the first article I've read on Newsweek (and I read it daily) that questions Obama's rhetoric.

Please tell me the editor's OK. Next thing you know I'll be reading an article about Hillary that doesn't question her integrity, motives or abilities. Mr. Editor. . .Please get well soon. I don't want to read a pro-Hillary piece here or anywhere else. I really don't think I could take it.

Seriously...I AM an Obama supporter. But I have to be honest; this magazine promotes Obama as shamelessly as Fox News promoted Rudy G. Despite the fact that I am in favor of your chosen candidate, I cannot condone your actions. The media didn't used to be like this. It used to be that newspapers, magazines and such, you know, REPORTED news. Why the switch? Is there some sort of manufacturer's tax exemption you're trying to qualify for?

Anyway. . .Good work Mr. Samuelson. You got one by the Newsweek spin doctors. I can only assume you have a a better job lined up already. If not, shame on you for risking your family's security on a piece that's a clear example of "too little too late".

With respect, I do not think you understand what Obama means when he uses the word, "change."

The problems in this country remain unsolved not for a lack of good ideas, but for a lack of implementation - for a number of reasons including partisanship, good-old-boys-club, laziness, and political pandering.

The change I think Obama is talking about is not some novel idea for how to deal with a particular problem, but rather the changing of the way the idea is mobilized and carried out. The change is that instead of being divisive (or even partisan, one step back from the brink on the sliding scale of political disagreements), he would seek to build coalitions and listen to alternate points of view.

Once you realize that this is the change he is speaking of, it becomes easy to note this sort of track record in Obama's legislative experience, too.

    BRAVO!!
Finally someone is saying what needs to be said! First of all, he's screwing up this nation's chance of having a real problem solver in the White House, Ms. Hillary Clinton! Second, this bandwagon that's going on is really scary. Are the American people that dense? I know they elected George W. Bush twice, but that was against John Kerry. I'm quickly losing faith in the process.
If Obama gets the nomination then I'm not voting for him, and I'm a liberal!

Fascism succeeds in democratic countries because it convinces people that it's the wave of the future, it's progressive, it's young, it's vital, it's exciting. Fascist promise to fix what's broken in our democracy, to heal our wounds, to deliver us to promised lands.

Fascism appealed to youth activists. Indeed, the Nazis and Fascists were in major respects youth movements. In 1931, 60 percent of all German undergraduates supported the Nazi Student Organization. "Their goal, was to establish a youth culture for fighting the bourgeois trinity of school, home and church."

Meanwhile, middle and lower class Germans were attracted to the economic and cultural populism of Nazism. The Nazis economic rhetoric was eerily similar to John Edwards "Two Americas" talk. The Nazis promised to clamp down on Big Business and end the class struggle. Theodore Abel, an impressively clever American sociologist, took out an ad in the Nazi Party journal asking "old fighters" to submit essays explaining why they had joined. The essays were combined in the fascinating book Why Hitler Came Into Power. One essayist, wrote that he embraced the Nazis because of their "uncompromising will to stamp out the class struggle, snobberies of caste and party hatreds. The movement bore the true message of socialism to the German workingman."

Nazism's appeal to the professional classes was just as strong. By 1939, 59 percent of conservationist leaders had joined the Nazi party, while only 10 percent of adult males had. Forty five percent of medical doctors had joined and roughly one quarter of teachers and lawyers had. The two groups of professionals with the highest rates of participation in the Nazi Party? Veterinarians were first and foresters were a close second. Dominick found a "unique nexus between National Socialism and nature conservation."

The Nazis and Italian Fascists won-over big business, cultural elites, the youth and the lower-classes because they portrayed themselves as heroically on the side of progress, protecting the environment and the poor. Fascists preached unity, togetherness and an end to division.

You are beyond stretching when you have to equate Obama's attempts to unify as fascist. How utterly ignorant an approach you have taken. This must say what a good job he is doing if you have to resort to such ridiculous tactics of name calling and invoking the tenet of fear-just as your current president is doing-to try and place a brake on Obama's momentum. You probably want to believe his hope message and call for change too; but, after repeated disappointments by elected officials, you are incapable of that emotion. So sorry for you!

      • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/20/2008 12:21:37 PM

Actually, I equate any candidate who holds that it is the federal government's responsibility to control its citizens by 'fixing' their problems as socialists\communists\fascist. It just happens that the deocratic party has embraced the same principles and tactics of the fascist movement. If the shoe fits...

Amenjhani/putin/chavez/ would make mincemeat of Obama ....remember the embarrassment of the Carter admin. another Idealistic "change the nation" bunch. Just remember the burned out hulks of choppers in the desert that got lost on the way to rescue the Hostages on day 400+ of the crisis on nightline. at least we CAN make progress in Iraq and no one parades Americans blindfolded on qorldwide tv night after night.

Mr. Samuelson should be aware that many of us found it quite easy to be non-dazzled by Obama. And yes, where has the media been and what have they been doing? Well, we know the answer to that, don't we?
The very basis of Obama's campaign rhetoric is a delusion; and it is deceptive. Obama says, it is ill advised to put in the same set of characters doing the same things and expecting different results. He has now insulted 3/4 of Congress, democrats and republicans alike. Change a word here and there, and what he is giving us is the definition of insanity. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. We all know that. So what is he really saying?. If we vote for anyone other than he, the American people are redundant and insane? Yes, he is. And is he saying that all the other candidates, senators, governors and the like are has-beens, old, and also insane. Read between the lines.....He is saying vote for me not them, for the "new guy" Put your faith and trust in someone who is NOT tested and has the least qualifications to lead this country. His platform speaks to his own very weaknesses and inabilities, and admits to them. It is a negative message. Trust me not them; vote for me not them; yet he accepts their campaign contributions and public endorsements of these same old, has-beens, insane politicians. And he claims to be a uniter. How is a Obama going to go back to the entire senate, full of people who have been there again and again, and say, yes, I did say you were old, insane and has-beens, but here I am to bring us all together. And his message of HOPE? I don't need Obama telling the American people we need hope. We are a people of hopes. And right now my biggest hope is he will be the last person to occupy the White House; or excuse me, in Obama's own words, "my White House". A positive, up-lifting, dazzling message...no it is not. It is negative and replete with insults, accusations, pandering and deception.

OMG, finally some unbiased reporting. Obama, Bob the builder says you are plagarizing "Yes We Can". Hold on for a ride you Obama cheerleaders are not prepared for. One clue, it looks nothing like the utopian crap you have bought so far. I am embarrassed to be associated with this ..."change". Thankfully by association only, I might add. No, I am not a Republican, so be hatin on me!!!

If you're not informed about Obama's accomplishments and plans, it's not the same as Obama not having accomplishments and plans.

  • Posted By: jacreader @ 02/20/2008 12:20:42 PM

Robert Samuelson: well said! You've articulated many of the things I've been saying to others and thinking about Mr. Obama. I have a lot of concerns about him and am alarmed at so many people being "wowed" by his charisma. In general, our society votes too much based on emotion, rather than a fact-based analysis approach, which is why he's so appealing.
BTW readers, I'm on the fence; I haven't chosen a candidate as yet.

Another vote for McCain if Obama is nominated - he can't possibly change anything - who are all of you kidding

    • Posted By: kenjo @ 02/20/2008 11:20:41 AM

this deusional foolishness talk has gone on too long. Are you comparing Obama to hitler? shame on you.
You need to go outside the country and see how much hatred the rest of the world has against american
      arrogance.
The world is calling for dialogue and diplomacy, not war!
No to Hilary Clinton, No to John Mccain. Yes we can to Obama

      • Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 12:19:58 PM

I did not say he was like Hitler promoting war. I am saying that people during a desperate time latched onto his promises without asking questions. They wanted something different. At the time that Hitler came into power, Germany was in serious trouble. He made speeches promising hope, change, etc. He kept saying it over and over without explaining how it would be different. They believed this man could single-handedly "save" them. You said "shame on you." I feel no shame in asking people to please think .

Should the good talker Obama make the mistake of coddling the world, that same world will destroy America with an Obama like smile on their faces.

  • Posted By: PABluesMan @ 02/20/2008 12:07:51 PM

I've been hearing a lot about the experience levels of each of the candidates, and a favorite trope of the Hillarians is that Obama doesn't ahve the experience and she does. Well, Abraham lincoln had less experience than Obama (he ahd only served a single two year term in the House of Representatives" and look at his accomplishments. Conversely, Richard Nixon had miles of experience and ... well, you know the rest.

In my view, experience is only part of the picture. Would I like to hear more specifics from Obama? You betcha. But a candidate's ability to inspire -- and thus mobilize -- the electorate is also important. JFK was able to do that. So was Ronald Reagan. Hillary is just not able to get people excited about her candidacy.

She is able to attract fellow policy wonks. This is not a bad thing; she's been very specific about most of her proposals. But policy details don't get people in the gut, they don't give them the urge to go cast a ballot.

Just for the record, I'm still riding this fence ...

    • Posted By: OBWan @ 02/20/2008 12:19:16 PM

Good comments and Lincoln was not the only one. As I barely remember experience was a charge against JFK.

I'm 72 years old. I have been upset with George W Bush since he was Governor of Texas, and when he became president, not for his intelligence of ability to lead, but because of duplicity by his "handlers", I became depressed.

Barack Obama is the first person in a long while who I believe has the intelligence and charisma and character to united our fragmented country, and begin the climb back to respect in the world.

  • Posted By: jhunter72 @ 02/20/2008 12:18:58 PM

    BRAVO!!!
Finally someone is saying it! Obama is just another windbag. I'm a true Democrat, but if Obama wins the primary then I'm going to vote for McCain. At least I know what I'm going to get with him.

  • Posted By: sogbeye @ 02/20/2008 11:26:01 AM

    pOSTED BY SAMBIE:
What experience did George Bush Jnr have when he was voted to power? What experience did Bill Clinton have when he was voted into power? Obama has enough courage to tell you the direction of the change he will bring to America.
It is indeed time for change.

    • Posted By: pintamaria @ 02/20/2008 11:30:30 AM

George Bush and Bill Clinton had both been governors before becoming President. That is actual leadership experience. Being a senator, IMO, does not really qualify as leadership experience. I believe Hillary is more experienced because she assisted Bill Clinton in the White House. She was there for 8 years and got to witness every detail of what the job of a president entails.

      • Posted By: afranci @ 02/20/2008 12:18:54 PM

SO i AM VOTING FOR the spouse as well? You are indeed serious that Hillary's experience counts as her time she spent as First Lady in the White House? Please tell me you are not indeed serious about that train of thought! I find it ludicrous that anyone should take issue with anyone expressing his/her sentiment about when he/she has finally felt proud to be an American. Believe me, there will be much personal sacrifice that Michelle and their dau ghters will have to make if his candidacy for president comes to fruition. It will not be all peaches and cream. I can tell you that I have been embarassed at who represents us currently and will welcome someone of Senator Obama's statue being the "face of America" to the international community. My burst of American Pride is of no "advantage" to me. It is simply a statement of fact...just like Michelle Obama's statement.

Between articles like this and Howard Fineman's consistent mispronunciation of Obama's first name, it's enough to make one wonder about an editorial agenda at Newsweek. This is just the latest in a series of analyses in which the writer ascribes what he can't understand (Obama's appeal) to ignorance, trendiness or naivete. Anyone who has studied presidential leadership ought to be able to come up with an explanation for Obama's appeal that credits his supporters with some intelligence and thoughtfulness. Voters do not simply match their positions with candidates when choosing a president. They know that times and circumstances change, and so more general qualities (approach to leadership, to politics and policymaking, intelligence, judgment, temperament) count for just as much. Countless books on presidential decision-making (see Irving Janis' "Groupthink" or Barber's "Presidential Character", e.g.) offer good reasons for focusing on these, more general traits. To say nothing of the fact that many intelligent people prefer his portfolio of policy positions. I'm sick of all this denigration of Obama supporters as stupid or naive. It's intellectually lazy.

  • Posted By: joepishner @ 02/20/2008 12:17:49 PM

Robert, I agree with you. Your editorial is so much like my idea about the B. Hussien Obama thing that I could have written the same thing. You are exactly correct lin what you wrote here. I hope it wakes up the people in American to see the sham they are votilng for. Of course I would have John McCain and Newt Gingrich. Even Mit or Mike would be excellent Vice Presidents. Even Hillary wouldn't be as detrimental as an Obama win. Heaven Help Us. We are headed for trouble in good times. We need to continue the fight against radical muslim extremists and even get the moderate muslim peoples on our side. Obama appears to be better than Adolf or Benito in deceiving the masses. He thinks like Karl Marx.

Most of the comments that I have read here, only confirm that we need a culture change. And Obama is the only candidate out there to do that. Our culture is just going down the tubes. No loyalty, no pride, just hate and self-righteousness. Hopefully someone with character, like Obama, can help us get back on the right track. If Obama doesn't get in, my second choice of the candidates running would be McCain.
