I think your screen name should be more like josephmccarthyjr instead of albertgorejr. Your retoric sounds exactly like something McCarthy would have said during the 50s. Get with the times

OMG! Finally some press that hits the nail on the head. This "dream" will end up being a nightmare!

I really don't believe all of you haters out for Obama. I guess you all are the same ones that voted for Bush twice and look where we are.

    • Posted By: lamm01 @ 02/20/2008 12:14:14 PM

No. I honestly can say I didn't vote for Bush either time. And yes, I am an Obama hater. Just like millions of others who will turn to John McCain just so you're charlatan of a politician does get in. It will be sweet revenge and hopefully shut all of you mindless, stupid people up once and for all. And that's not rhetoric......

Kudos Mr. Samuelson! Spoken like a true insider. I guess we should stick with the known quantities because that???s worked out so well over the past 20 years. You (along with every other geezer) are missing the point of his campaign which is to begin to take apart piece by piece a broken system in Washington. There are those of us who are so disgusted with the known quantities that we are memorized by the mere chance for a shake-up in Washington. We don???t care if Obama breaks every promise he???s made and becomes just another self-serving Washington scumbag. We don???t even care if he falls flat on his face in his attempt for change. WE JUST WANT SOMEONE WHOS WILLING TO TRY! Now, you may view this as naïve, but from our perspective, what do we have to lose given the current alternatives?

  • Posted By: Critical Thinker @ 02/20/2008 11:54:32 AM

Tom Kennedy said it all. Candidates like Clinton and McCain are predictable and therefore controllable by special interests. Obama is new and unpredictable. While that may cause a panic attack for some including the author of this article, it is absolutely uninspiring at this time and place in history. Obama will bridge the gap as he proves with the millions who have voted for him already. Are you calling those who voted naive and stupid? Think about what you write from now on.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/20/2008 12:13:24 PM

Obama is easily controllable. Why do you think he won't release his visitor's log?

  • Posted By: lawade01 @ 02/20/2008 11:27:48 AM

I think that people need to stop focusing on the race and sex of a candidate and what they are really saying they are for. Mr Obama wants to quote Martin Luther King, and I find it offensive that he thinks he is even in his class. He talks a good speech, but that doesnt make him a good presidential candidate and four years in senate and a loss the the House does not make him experienced. I know people (african-american) who live or lived in ohio who said that he did not do anything for that state. I want to know why noone has mentioned that he is a Civil Rights attorney? Everyone is quick to point out Clintion's personal info, but not his. What has he actually accomplished white Senator, or even stood for.

    • Posted By: Obamaisagoodtalker @ 02/20/2008 12:13:13 PM

Good post! America needs a leader not a motivational speaker!

    • Posted By: afranci @ 02/20/2008 12:10:53 PM

Please get your facts straight. The reason he didn't do things for the people in Ohio is because he is a senator for Illinois! So what if he is a Civil Rights attorney-by the way, he mentioned that in his speech last night. You probably didn't know that either since you are of the opinion he represents the people in Ohio. Why would you be offended if he quotes Martin Luther King? Many people do, so does that make us contemtible? Also, check your spelling and grammatical errors:most glaring is your last statement that says ...actually accomplished white Senator...I trust you meant to say while NOT white. Food for thought!

  • Posted By: moodi @ 02/20/2008 12:12:03 PM

What is your biased comments? Are you going to maybe survive CLINTONS? How much do they pay for such cheap shots?

  • Posted By: allanka @ 02/20/2008 12:11:17 PM

Robert, I think people like you often forget what the word "campaign" means. In a lay man's term, it simply means to go out there and concieve people that you are the best candidate. How you do that, is really up to you. The obama camp choose to stick to the non-specifics because that appeals more to the ordinary person . For people who think they are "non-biased" reviewers and intellectuals like yourself, please visit the obama website for more details of his non-specifics. Let's try to be fair in our judgements and
    preconceptions or rather mis-preconceptions.

To all you Obamatons out there, wake up and don't drink the purple koolaid.

  • Posted By: Jon Dainty @ 02/20/2008 10:49:05 AM

It seems the national electorate disagrees with you, as do I. Obama's rhetoric is not only less caustic and more hopeful than Senator Clinton's, but he also has a good chance to bring a new face to this country. That newness will be needed in his efforts to repair the damage of the present Administration, both abroad and at home.

Tellingly, Obama speaks publicly of the failing economy and what I believe may be one of its foremost causes: the Iraq war. We cannot realistically continue this conflict far into the foreseeable future, and our next President *must* bring many of our military members home. This country can be fixed, and Mr. Obama, I predict, is just the "political newcomer" to do it.

    • Posted By: Obamaisagoodtalker @ 02/20/2008 12:10:35 PM

Rather than bring our troops home as Obama the good talker has said he would within a year, he may as well hand the terrorist enemy the keys to the Pentagon too. Obama is a good talker, "Dr. Feelgood"--promoting change, change, change and never a specific plan how best to achieve it without aiding our enemies.

Obama is no where considered a black man in USA Black's eyes since his father's family has never seen Salvery the way real US Blacks had. So he cannot be compared to be a Black man in USA. That being said, he however, represents to the youth as the Past vs the Future. And we youth only can see that words clearly. The news stories In this article above represents an older aging "baby-boommer-dying" population which has always consumed so much of our youths resources and services.

    • Posted By: ledzepgirl @ 02/20/2008 12:10:02 PM

Be careful! If it wasn't for us baby boomers the youth wouldn't even be here. Our generation has endured things the youth of this country can't even imagine. Vietnam was no picnic and who the hell started that freaking war! Ah, a Democrat.

You've done yourself no credit, Mr. Samuelson. Obama (or anyone elected President) doesn't do anything on his/her own. If you look at who is running Obama's campaign, you'll find educated, savvy, forward seeing people involved. He's remained one step ahead in this campaign for the nomination because of his selection of those surrounding him, and WILL do the same when he picks his cabinet!

  • Posted By: j-city7 @ 02/20/2008 12:09:08 PM

I'm surprised the editor of this site allowed such a fallacious article to be posted on the homepage for Newsweek. There is not even an attempt to dissociate the arguments used against Senator Obama, from the other candidates. Yet, the reader is to be persuaded to choose another of the candidates because of these arguments? Very weak indeed. Either both the author and editor are staunch Hillary supporters, or Republicans laying groundwork for the general election.

  • Posted By: lamm01 @ 02/20/2008 12:08:57 PM

My goodness. How in the hell did the editors let you write a honest, insightful article about the "Chosen One". A little too late don't you think. What you are saying is what many of us have been shouting, however due to the blatant, arrogant and misleading press, this information has been swept under the rug.... Maybe that's why they actually let you print it. Well, we've dug own own grave with this guy.... We;ll have nobobdy to blame but ourselves. God help us'''''''

i already commented on what a great known quantity clinton is, i almost forgot to mention the other part of this thing: oh yes, do we know who mccain is? he seems like a pretty decent guy, seems to have integrity, except when it comes to taxes and a few other things. having rudy guiliani as a "close friend" is a scary concept, but those republicans seem to find that man irresistable, they are sort of a homophobic momoerotic old mens club that way. mccain is a viscious warmonger (yipee we really need another one of those). like all good republicans he wants to outlaw abortion, because that is such a successful way to protect lives and not interfere in people's personal lives.

the thing i don't know about mccain is this: is he actually mentally fit to serve. am i the only one that noticed that mccain was acting confused and seriously stumbling over words last year. then he suddenly perked up and became a lot more like himself. i'm no doctor, but it was more than a campaign gone bad. it looked like something neurological or medical. my guess is that he is now on some medication to fix whatever was going on. he looked a lot like an early alzheimers patient in the middle of last year. if that is the case, the bad news for him and all of us is that the mediactions that treat it are only temporarily effective. i hope that there is a push for revealing all the medical records (as happened with bobdole and bill clinton (which revealed that bobdole was actually in better health than clinton even though he was a lot older). we have already had one president with failing mental faculties (reagan), let's not even risk that.
is he mentally capable of running the country?

I've been hearing a lot about the experience levels of each of the candidates, and a favorite trope of the Hillarians is that Obama doesn't ahve the experience and she does. Well, Abraham lincoln had less experience than Obama (he ahd only served a single two year term in the House of Representatives" and look at his accomplishments. Conversely, Richard Nixon had miles of experience and ... well, you know the rest.

In my view, experience is only part of the picture. Would I like to hear more specifics from Obama? You betcha. But a candidate's ability to inspire -- and thus mobilize -- the electorate is also important. JFK was able to do that. So was Ronald Reagan. Hillary is just not able to get people excited about her candidacy.

She is able to attract fellow policy wonks. This is not a bad thing; she's been very specific about most of her proposals. But policy details don't get people in the gut, they don't give them the urge to go cast a ballot.

Just for the record, I'm still riding this fence ...

  • Posted By: jmmal_2000 @ 02/20/2008 12:06:25 PM

Last I checked the same "journalists" that are failing to attach Obama's plan are also failing to attack Hilary Clinton's actual experience in the political realm. How much more experience in politics does she actually have over Obama? Hasnt she only been in the US Senate for approximately 5 years? Being the first lady of the United States and Arkansas are not quite the same thing as being President and Governor. Isnt Hilary running on the same slogan of "change"? What criteria towards change can she proclaim. She was tremendously unsuccessful in her attempt to initiate universal healthcare previously, despite overwhelming support from the actual president of the United States.

Your own claims, Mr. Samualson, are no better grounded than the one's you attack. I would suggest you take an intro course in the principles of effective argumentation. Or maybe you received a gift or money to intentionally write a distorted article. You're not going to get any awards for this one, buddy.

do i know who hillary clinton is? yes she is an egomanic who has spent the past 8 years preparing to move back into the whitehouse. she has monumentally bad judgement (iraq, iran and on and on) and does not learn from her mistakes or even admit error. she has no interest or ability to be introspective: when she was asked to say what her weak point is in one of the debates, she attacked obama's response and offered none of her own. she is a dull technocrat with poor ideas. she plans to force a completely absurd version of universal healthcare on the nation, that will achiev one thing only: enriching the insurance companies and will involve fining citizens and garnishing their wages, that sounds like a winner doesn't it? yes she is a known quantity and what i know i really dislike.

    • Posted By: Ms. P. of AZ @ 02/20/2008 12:05:03 PM

I agree and not only that...watch for the further debates to be aired nationally, in every debate I have watched, Hilary Clinton merely sits there and listens to Obama's response and repeats the same exact thing in her own words!! It's ludicrous!! I mean I know what good debating is about but if you're running for president...at least have your own ideas instead of taking credit for them and assuming people will listen to you because you were the previous first lady....all this talk about hilary clinton makes me sick...you can see right through her egomaniac ways and that she's just as corrupted as the next guy and she has no idea what she's doing because she couldnt even accomplish her "plans" when her own husband was president!! now thats a delusional person.

For me, it is not about what the candidate will get done with congress, but rather IF the candidate will get ANYTHING done with congress. I firmly believe that with Clinton and McCain at the helm, the status quo of D.C. will continue and bitter partisanship will continue to stall any progress being made. You can say what you want, but you can not deny the fact that Obama has energized a nation and millions of people to come out and vote in the primaries and caucases. Obama can and will bring people to work across the aisle and he can and will get a nation of brow-beaten and lied to constituents engaged and excited about politics once again(me for example). I am not ignorant enough to believe that he can get everything done, but I am confident that, unlike his competition, he can and will get something done for the American people...and let's face it, that will be a big change.

    • Posted By: robsmimi @ 02/20/2008 12:02:12 PM

Please tell me what he has done in the Senate in regard to "reaching across the aisle." As Chris Matthews said this morning, "If you want to know what somebody will do in politics, ask them what they have done." If he can so magically work with the Republicans, please enlighten us.
