Be realistic: USA, UK, France, Croatia, Slovenia, etc. have take a responsibility for what was happened yesterday in Belgrade. The broke the International law and acts of UN, and didn't respect the integrity of Serbia. They provoke everything.
It's a shame that American society are not well informed about Kosovo problems. They know only about Milosevic and 1998. and 1999., but they don't know what kind of crimes made Albanians in a past decades, they don't know that Serbian government was fight against Albanians terroristic organization KLA.
It' s very clear that US government would fight also against terrorists on their own territory using much more forces then Serbia does. This is one unfair treatment to Serbia and Serbs. There is no truth about Serbia, just one dirty campaign.

The article failed to point out that the majority of the protesters peacefully went home, but a smaller percent (which was still a huge crowd) mostly football fans and young people were breaking in to shops, robing stores, burning buildings, attacking the embassy, and so on. I think the sadist thing was that everybody knew this was coming and nether the politicians nether the police didn't prevent it from happening.

It is very interesting that author does not report on slogans shouted during the protest which were the same with those that were shouted before tragedies in Vukovar, Sarajevo, and Srebrencia. Protester holding the pictures of WAR CRIMINALS like Mladic and Karadjic. Slogans ???noz-zica-SREBRENICA??? translated in English knifes-wires-srebrenica, or ???ubij-zakolji-da-shiptar-ne ???postoji??? translated ???kill-slaughter-so ???albanians ???don???t-exist???. This points out that nothing has changed much in Serbia since Milosevic only the main actors have different names, so much on propaganda on the democratization of Serbia and its repent on the crimes committed in Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo.

kinda like the chants aimed at serbs in mostar " Jasenovac " ( nazi death camp in croatia during ww2 ) Or hang serbs during a soccer game. i am sure serbs are the only one in your neck of the woods that do this. i served there when i was young and dumb in the us army. so enough of this " look at the serbs" junk. you are all eqully to blame.

hi mr EUSSR, you are wrongly informed that Muslims are torturing everybody everywhere, why dont you take a look at the christian americans's social service being provided to the whole world, its attacking countries which actually do not have any power to either fight back or to draw attention, the vietnam war, the gulf war, the afghan war, the iraq war and now i think its also planning up to blow up Iran and then South Korea and some other countries and later may be it will blow up the whole world and blow up itself just like the american students are murdering their fellow mates in universities in america and eventually shooting themselves. What does it prove? I am a Muslim and I am from India, I am happy to say that i d not belong to a terorist group and that i am from a very diplomatic country. Others may make fun of the Asian countries, but we are striving hard for self sufficiency rather than poking nose in others's a$$. Now it seems to me that Hitler really made some serious sense by killing the people who would destroy the world piece by piece. Guess how much money did USA donate to China during the recent floods? a 100,000$ damn, i could have gifted a HUMMER to my friend with that money. Why do terrorists not attack the countries like sweden, finland, switzerland, russia, china, canada, iceland, ireland etc because these guys mind their own buisness. Because of the attack on Iraq there was huge appreciation in oil prices, which eventually increased prices of other commodities because every thing produced has to be delivered to the consumer. I have got a lot to discuss about this, i would just likw to say something, please do not label any community like the way you did in your comment, its fool's job actually, not every Muslim is a terrorist and not every terrorist is a Muslim. And yeah, hey, head scarves are not meant for jews or christians or buddhists, its for Muslim women, what bothers others if they practice their religion, even the christian nuns or the sisters wear scarves would you prevent them too. Oh, come on, be a practical person. Think beyond America...........good luck.

last time i checked theaters, schools, apt buildings, etc were bombed and or attacked in russia by chechen murderes. There have been attacks in western china as well but the chinese kinda hide these facts

      • Posted By: suhailtalikoti @ 02/22/2008 5:14:16 AM

do you also mean to say that muslims are torturing everybody everywhere? what about the war crimes the US soldiers did in the iraqi prison, stripping the suspects and the civilians who simply surrendered to the US army, raping them, sexually assaulting them and yeah, what about the Guantanamo base or the Abu Gharaib prison. Listen, i am dead against terrorism, but i also think that what makes people kill people? or why do people kill people. All this has nothing to do with any of the religion or any community, its plain politics, power and money what these guys fight for. Every action has equal or opposite reaction. So, why take violent action when you already know whats the reaction?

        • Posted By: viking09 @ 02/22/2008 5:21:35 AM

no iam not saying that. all muslims are terrorists. what i tried to say was that evil is everywhere. my comment was just aimed at the part about nations that try not to get involved still face danger.

The sadest thing is that more than 200.000 people were praying in our biggest church st.sava trying to send a democratic message to the world, and this all was ruined by a group of hoolingans which saw a great opportunity to burn, destroy and rob shops! And all efforts made by a normal, sain people trying to channel their despair, due to the loss of Kosovo, into something creative and positive was not only diminished, but brutalizely repressed by those who only seek out for opportunity to destroy! This morning Belgrade woke up with a mix of shame, doubt, disgrace and numerous questions to which our goverment will soon have to answer!!! It was their responsibility to PROTECT all embassies, shops, OUR OWN CITY!!! I too oppose to the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, but I will never, like the vast majority of my contryman, accept the abuse of any form of violence! I refuse to be seen as a savage, just because my goverment is incompetent to their job, which in the first place is to protect the lives of their citizens and insure the safety of all domestic and international properties in our country. The direct guilt for devistations that took place last night in my home town lay upon our incompetent goverment! Not only they our guilty for that, but also for the message they have sent to world - instead of pictures from a peacfull and dignified protest from Belgrade, the world witnessed how minority of hooligans ruled out the democratic aspirations of the vast majority!!

The present time separatist movement in Kosovo came into being in the time of World War II when the Albanians collaborated with Nazi Germany and fought WWII on the side of the Nazis. During this time the Albanians who fought in WWII on the side of Nazi Germany received the Nazi recognition as "the Great Albanian State". At this time the Nazis exterminated and ousted most of the Serbian population (400 000 Serbs) from Kosovo. Multitude of Albanians moved into the houses of those Serbs who were exterminated or fled Kosovo.
After WWII Tito counted on Albania joining Yugoslavia. In exchange for giving Kosovo to Albania he received about 400 000 refugees from Albania and moved them to Kosovo.
Tito, by agreement with Albania, did not allow the Serbs to return to Kosovo and just provided them with financial compensation. The borders between Albania and Yugoslavia were widely opened until march of 1949 and Tito did not take the census to calculate how many Albanians moved into Kosovo during this time. The Croatian Serbs did not receive the autonomy like the Kosovo Albanians in 1963. At this time the ration of Serbian population to Albanian was 1 to 9. According to the Constitution of Yugoslavia of 1974 Kosovo was an autonomous region and was part of the Socialist Republic of Serbia. According to the constitution Kosovo has equal rights with the Republic of Serbia.
In the 1970s repeated cases of intolerance towards the Serbs took place in Kosovo.
Between 1971 and 1981, when the census took place, 50,000 Serbs left Kosovo.
In 1981 mass disturbances took place that put a beginning to the so-called "Kosovo Intifada" which existed on the level of gangsterism and eventually brought about the events of the 90s and 2004.
Before the military actions of the 90s there were 1800 Orthodox cathedrals and monasteries, 200 of which date back to the times before the 14th century when the Serbian Patriarchate was established in 1346. During the military actions many Orthodox monasteries and temples were destroyed. Kosovo has become the Serbian Golgotha.

    Sincerely Yours
    .

well said historian. but the truth here is almost useless. Byt the way yesterday was the anniversary of said 74 constitution. Tito, a croat, should have done the same with Dalmatia as well.

Before offending Slavic and Serbian women with the primitive comments unworthy of a decent human being, you should learn world history. Here I, a historian, who have taught in the USA schools for decades, offer to educate you, the lowbrows:
Before the 6th century, the Balkans were colonized by the Slavs. A few Slavic states appeared on the territory of present day Serbia by the 7th century including the Slavic Serbian state in the North of present day Kosovo called Rashka (??ka zemija). During the formation of Slavic states they were gradually Christianized beginning in the time of Byzantine emperor Heraklius (610 - 641 AD) (?????????????????? in Greek) . Heraklius founded the Byzantine imperial dynasty that ruled for 100 years. By the middle of the 9th century a strong Slavic state was formed on the territory of Serbia including Kosovo. In the 9th century there was an intensive expansion of the Bulgars. In the 10th century Kosovo became part of the Bulgarian Kingdom under Bulgarian King Semyon the Great. But in 1018 the Bulgarian Kingdom was conquered by Byzantium and Kosovo including Rashka (??ka zemija) became part of the Byzantine Empire. By 1190 Kosovo and Metohija were recognized part of the Serbian Kingdom which became independent on Byzantium .Modern Kosovo became an integral part of Serbia in 1208.

  • Posted By: historian2008 @ 02/22/2008 3:41:24 AM

In 1217 Stephan (The First Crowned) was crowned as a king of Serbia (including the present day Kosovo that became an integral part of Serbia). In 1219 the Serbian Orthodox Church was established. Three Orthodox episcopacies were formed on the territory of Kosovo. In the end of the 13th century the residence of the Serbian Metropolitan (Archbishop) was moved to Pech (?????????? in Serbian) in Kosovo. Kosovo became the religious, cultural and political center of Serbia. Vast lands in Metohija and western Kosovo were given to Serbian orthodox Church. Many Orthodox monasteries and churches were founded here. The most famous Orthodox monasteries and cathedrals were built in Metohija and Kosovo. Famous castles located in Kosovo, were used by Serbian kings as their residences.
During the reign of Stephan Dushan (1331 - 1355) , Serbia, including the territory of Kosovo, achieved its golden age. After Dushan's death Serbia was split into a few weakened kingdoms. In the 1360s Kosovo was divided between three princes as a result of the feudal wars, between Nikola Altomanovich, prince Lazarus and King Vukashin.
In 1371 the territory of Macedonia and south of Kosovo fell under the Turks when king Vukashin was defeated. Prince Lazarus tried to unite Serbia with the help of the Orthodox Patriarch to face the Turks. But in 1389 the united Serbian Army was defeated by the outnumbered army of sultan Murada I in Kosovo, and prince Lazarus himself was killed. Serbia became an vassal state of the Ottoman Empire.

  • Posted By: historian2008 @ 02/22/2008 3:41:09 AM

In the beginning of the 15th century under Stephan Lazarovich Serbia experiences a short period of renaissance when the unity of Serbian territory was restored. As a result of the Turkish invasion Serbia became a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. The Muslims squeezed out the Christians from all major administrative positions. This is when the Muslim Alban population appeared in Kosovo from which the Serbs had to flee to the mountains to preserve their identity and Christianity. Christian Serbs were not allowed to carry arms or to occupy civil positions. Serbs became the underdogs of the Ottoman Empire. During the Turkish occupation the Serbs led liberation movements which were repeatedly defeated. In the 17th c. Austria became an ally in the Serbian liberation movement which was successful at times on some territories, but Austria was defeated in the Austrian-Turkish war of 1735-1737. The Serbian liberation movement came to an end. As a result, the Serbs had to leave the Southern territories, their lands, on which they lived for about 1500 years and move to the North. 37,000 families moved out from the territory of Kosovo and Southern and Central Serbia. In the end of the 17th century Albanians started moving into the territory that was abandoned by the Serbs. By the middle of the 17th century about half of the Albanians were converted to Islam. Muslim Albanians successfully integrated into Muslim Turkish culture, started serving in the Turkish army and took key administrative positions. In the end of the 18th century the Albanians started colonizing the nearby abandoned Serbian territories. In 1780 most of Kosovo's territory fell under the rule of Mohamed-Pasha, who created his own state with the center at Skadar Lake. Mohamed-Pasha recognized the Ottoman Empire only nominally. In 1831 Mahmud-Pasha's army was defeated and the central power of the Ottoman Empire was restored. Because of the the Ottoman Empire's conquering Albania more Albanians moved to Kosovo, and by the middle of the 19th century over 50% of the Kosovo population were Albanians. In the beginning of the 19th Serbia became independent from the Ottoman Empire. Kosovo became part of the Serbian Kingdom in 1918.

Serbs have all the rights to defend their historic heartland. What would happen and how we would behave if the Mexican population here in California will announce Independence of the Mexican Republic based on ethnicity or on their religion? How the English will react to Northern Ireland's declaration of independence based on a century of war, when multitudes of thousands of Irish Catholics were killed in the most brutal way? What about the world's response if Italy takes over Vatican and makes it an integral part of its republic? There are myriads of the craziest scenarios that can be declared legal by insane politician who pursue their own personal interests. The Kosovo declared independence is one of those crazy scenarios that is self serving and distroys reason and the world stability. Here I, a historian, who have taught in the USA schools for decades, offer to educate you, why the Serbs have the legal and moral right to defend their religious, cultural and historic heartland which is one of the the riches in European history.

how condesending to imply that the protesters were children...believe me these "children" come from families that believe the same thing: US has created another chaos at the expense, as always, Serbs. It would be nice if even one person in the US media would question the legality of US government's role in recognizing Kosovo...but forget the truth, as always, the truth is the first casuallty of propaganda war.

    • Posted By: pdmacguire @ 02/22/2008 12:12:54 AM

These children are probably the children of the hundreds of thousands of refugees who were driven from Croatia, where, unlike the Albanians in Kosovo, Sebs lived in peace for centuries. Western promises to help with resettling them in new homes in Serbia were broken years ago. Is it any wonder thay have reason to be bitter?

I had a history professor once that said that Serbia should have had the stuffing beat out of it for starting World War One. The Russians stepped in to prevent this, and as a result, Serbia hasn't ever had the "Butt Whoopin'" that they so richly deserve. Lay waste to these Embassy "protesters", it'd be world-wide "community improvement".

    • Posted By: pdmacguire @ 02/22/2008 12:05:40 AM

Your professor perhaps felt that the Austrians should still have their bloated, corrupt, evil empire as a reward for stealing the lands of other people? Ask any Italian if Italy was better off under Austrian rule. Hell, ask any German, for that matter.
