Comment: McCain said about his dealings with Paxson, "As I said before, I believe that there could possibly be an appearance of corruption because this system has tainted all of us."

The above statement is cause for major scrutiny of this guy, people. He knows that DC is corrupt, and is using it as an excuse to be corrupt, himself. "Oh, me, oh, my. I'm just a victim of the system." Dang! You'd think he was a liberal or something.

He can't get his story straight about the lobbyist and Paxson, and his aides obviously do not have any contact with him. They're just making him look worse.

    Vote for Ron Paul!

Comment: Attention Republicans: America has had enough - You take away the civil rights of man just because he is a Democrat (Alabama Governor Don Siegelman), support a $1B a day war for oil, while our nation's inferstructure deteriorates, and live just for the almighty dollar. November can't happen soon enough.

Comment: John McCain is a good man in a dirty profession. There is always dirt or mistakes in everyones past. I don't think the Times report was completely acurate, but they were using what they felt were reliable sources. It is the job of a free press to put out infromation they have. It is a voters job to review information from as many places as possible before giving their vote to someone running for office. I just hope the folks who complain about a liberal biased press have the same consideration if and when unflattering stories come out about Obama and or Clinton.

Comment: The majority of Americans like this kind of man to be president who can *ull$hit around and having a very thick skin like Bush. McCain is cunning to be able to avoid impeachment and whatever personal attacks being thrown on him. A US president must be able to stand firm and not let these sorts of thing to deter him from his duty as president even if the accusations against him/her are true! This kind of president will not be able to be blackmailed. The president must be able to say something today and without stammering say something different tomorrow. Come on, we don't want an angel to be president, a normal human being like everyone else is good enough! I think he is the perfect choice for president.

  • Posted By: eabg_22 @ 02/23/2008 4:14:16 PM

Comment: Wrong again. This article trys to show the truth behind the biggest political scandal since Socrates. John McCain didn't remember meeting a guy in his office in over 7 years ago. Though he admits he helped Mr. Paxson forward his issue with the FCC, that he seemed to suggest it was through his aids and not directly in conversation makes Watergate looks like a city council blunder and eclipses Bill Clinton's lieing under oath and making his wife defend him while he sorted out the mean of the word "is", tenfold. Shame on you Sen. McCain. You obviously hate your country and would not be able to make good decisions as President. Drop your bid for president, give your delegates to Obama so he can have both nominations and run against himself. He'll need both nominations to become president when Larry Sinclairs story breaks open

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/25/2008 00:46:27

Comment: Now you lost me. Assuming for the moment that McCain is lying, what does his lie ECLIPSE Clinton's lie? Absurd.

Never mind the fact that if McCain is lying, all that means is this: he did in fact meet with Paxson and, thereafter, prompted the FCC to make a decision without directing FCC as to what that decision should be.

Comment: A big part of the problems we are seeing with government under Bush is that he appoints industry lobbyists to regulate their industries. The effect of this 'fox in the chicken coop' style of regulation is the industries get what they want and the public gets the bill. One concrete example of this is the set asides for small business are increasingly going to large businesses. Hard won compliance with with environmental regulations has been overridden by Bush's cronies. If we elect McCain and his 'honorable people' we will see four more years of this corruption--this is the important lesson to be learned from this article, not that McCain may have had a girlfriend.

Comment: Some unfortunate Americans are too mired in the past; so fearful of the future that they cannot 'hope' and strive for fulfillment of the American dream for ALL Americans.

Democrats should continue to EDUCATE AMERICANS out of fear, even as they move the country forward out of the present debacle created by the Bush-McCains of America.
    \
Kerry ALSO was a national hero!
So was Al Gore, who ALSO served in Vietnam with Kerry and McPain.

And guess who beat BOTH Vietnam vets to the Presidency, a non-vet Bush without brains. lol

Insane Bush-McCain (mr childish bomb, bomb, bomb Iran) is a senile old man, who should be in the retirement home.
Or we should ship Bush-McPain to his beloved Iraq; so that McCain can retire for another 100 years of Shia-Sunni civil war, which has been going on for 1400 YEARS, and looks to continue for another millennia. lol

No wise President makes final and important decisions without consultations with the nation's experts (including national heroes).

Therefore, any of the present democratic candidates on the Democratic side should worry less about old McCain's hero status; because that has not saved the nation from the failings of Bush-McCain.

Democrats should instead continue to EDUCATE AMERICANS out of fear, even as they move the country forward out of mire created by the Bush-McCains of America.

He never requested a favorable decision , merely a an overdue ruling, but the Media does not tell the whole truth becuse they are biased .
It also seems that The Times considered John McCain an honorable candidate in January despite the fact that the story was being reviewed by straffers for almost 6 months.

Comment: It is clear to me that we continue to rail against only some politicians and not all. Evidence clearly exists that Americans will tolerate and revere a politician who lied under oath about his behavior but now we are in a "lather" about this story? Perhaps the journalists could finish their investigations with actual facts and evidence beforepublication? Where is the same standard used during the Clinton years ?

  • Posted By: sickof hypocrisy @ 02/23/2008 10:27:37 AM

Comment: Clearly our nation is "comfortable" with Democratic politians who stretch the truth in recollections of indiscrete behavior. Evidence exists to support the claim that wives of such politicians tacitly approve of the behavior. I fail to see why media people are in a lather about other potential indiscrete behavior, especially when the journalism is completed in a shoddy manner. What does this say about our society when a President can lie under oath and later be revered by many as a wonderful leader? Why are these same people now upset about another perceived instance of corruption? If one can accept lying under oath , what is the big deal now? Especially whenthe "now" is so unclear that it actually happened?

If McCain did succumb to the temptation of this lobbyist - perhaps he can be punished as was Bill Clinton - who earns a fine income retreading his claptrap of change.

The Jihad-type Muslims despise the Isrealies and despise us for protecting and funding the Isrealies. So (are you with me so far?), for as long as we continue to protect and fund the Isrealis, we will be targeted by the Jihadists. Got it now.

Nothing like a conversative Republican calling someone a bigoted racist.

A report appeared on the Drudge Internet Report last December. The right wing crew did not choose to go on attack mode against Matt Drudge. McCain's lobbying activites were first reported in the Boston Globe about 8 years ago. Why did all the right wing pundits decide to stage their crusade now?

Even stranger is the article I just read on Earthlink.net.In that article, McCain is actually defending his lobbying activities. Isn't this an example of the same sot of flip-floping that McCain accused Kerry of doing? This all sounds like one more example of GOP hypocrisy.

Comment: re Civics Lesson from the uniformed person who Saw Your Mommy - yopu too Druid: The bicameral Legislature (2 Houses of Congress) had nothing to do with schools of thought regarding our gov't doing what it wants ... and the rest of your uninformed drivel. It was a debate over (1) the relative power of the States (many considered themselves to be sovereign, issued their own money and postage and even had trade barriers) and (2) the need to represent individuals. The Senate gives equal voice to each State, and the House of Representatives represent the people based on population. Think about certain responsibilities of each; ALL money matters/legislation must originate in the House (representating the populace) whereas the Senate has "Advice and Consent" on Treaties and certain appointments. It seems many need to go back to school - I suggest you start with the Articles of Confederatrion and then actually read the Constitution paying attention to the Preamble "In order to form a more perfect Union ...".

Comment: No, it does not start with the Constitution. It ends with the Constitution. It starts with various of the Federalist papers written by and among those who disagreed. You're right on the general representative natures of the two chambers, but that's a superficial conclusion that doesn't explain the tension among the founders.

Comment: The leaders of both the Republican and Democratic Parties are moving us closer and closer to Socialism, away from our Constitution (the true Test of American Patriotism). Both major parties pushed through the Patriot Act (a direct violation of our civil liberties) allowing the Federal government (and the lawmakers) greater access in to our personal lives. We have welfare, medicare, and medicaid, all basically federal government subsidies for Americans as a socialist distribution of wealth and commodities. Then, we have the continuation of undeclared War (a direct violation of our Constitution), allowing the President (or socialist leader) the ability to unilaterally decide whether our country (our Americans) go fight in another country using military resources and costing volunteer military lives.
The very core values of America that the founding fathers of our country laid out for us are being destroyed, and our nation is moving in a perilous direction. The American people need to Wake up from their Slumber, and start helping educate their fellow Americans that we are not Socialists, but in fact we are a Nation of Patriots (people who live by and die for civil liberty as well as individual rights).
Our country sorely needs a third party that will rejuvinate and unify the 40% of Americans that usually don't vote, to overcome the two party system of the Socialist Democrats and Socialist Republicans. Individuals always care for other individuals through charity and good deeds, the Federal government steals from individuals to line the pockets of the Corporations and maintain power for itself, leaving whatever remains recycled back to the American people.
Stop sleep walking into Socialism --- Wake up and fight for our Founding Fathers core values of freedom and equality for all! Freedom from the Federal government intervention! Freedom from excessive taxation!

    Obama, Clinton, McCain, Huckabee --
    1. All voted to continue funding the Iraq War.
    2. All support "comprehensive immigration reform" -- Washington speak for Amnesty for illegal aliens. They want their big corporation buddies to be happy now don't they with their cheap labor. Meanwhile we pay higher taxes to offset the burden that would put on Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare. If you subsidize something you get more of it, the more we subsidize illegal immigration the more we will get of it, and the more illegal alien families will be affected and hurt.
    3. All wish to enact some socialist program or another for the "greater good" -- Translation, we want you to pay higher taxes so we (the federal government) can spend it in the way that benefits our special interest group. Obama (Health care insurance companies), Clinton ( Pharmaceuticals), McCain (Military industrial complex including all military corporations), Huckabee (Military industrial complex).
    4. All are for reforming Washington and ridding it of government and lobbyist control (well so they say).
    5. All support the Patriot Act (a direct violation of our civil liberties)

McCain's staff had multiple contacts with Paxson representative on this issue. Certainly the staffers briefed McCain on Paxson's request for his intervention. That's their job. Whether or not McCain entertained overtures directly from Paxson officials, he was cognizant of their desires.

Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. To be quite honest, none of the candidates are worthy of voting for. One is too new, the other is hoping her husband will get her back in the white house, then theres Huckabee I think or Ron Paul whom I dont really know enough about one way or the other and finally McCain, who besides being in the military truly hasnt offered so much either. Mitt Romey quit too soon. If Michael Bloomberg would have ran, no one would even have to ask, he would be our next President. And it would have been great for the country too, I am sick of people with a "D" or "R" behind their name claiming to be bipartisan but yet belong to a left or right group. We need a president who wont serve either side and just do the job, until then, we can scratch bipartisanship off the Xmas list.

Those who may have the qualities would rather not deal with the abuse that will be levied upon them by opponents and the media. That's a loss for our country, and it is directly caused by (a) media that is more interested in profits and in furthering their own political objectives and (b) other crapball politicians who, when they start losing on policy discussions, lower the level of discourse to the personal (e.g., Hillary Clinton now, and I'm sure some Republican in the past).
