I wonder what purpose this serves other than to stir up more garbage during an election year. Does it really matter what McCain did 8 years ago? And why now, is the NYT focusing on this? This is the type of hype that will make me vote for McCain just because the media is trying to put a negative spin on him. Maybe the US citizen will finally realize that the media these days is just tabloid and when they put out a story such as this,it only make them look like fools. Maybe the obama supporters and campaign are getting a charge out of this right now, but the media needs to wake up to the fact the the average U.S. citizen is not stupid and doesn't believe everything the media would like us to believe. There are so many more important issues to pursue, that these stories are just boring and lead to nowhere.

Obama is a great sppech writer even if it means he has to occasionaly borrow from his MA Governor friend. He has no business running for the Presidency and no American has any business considering him for this greates of all offices! His wife has proven her lack of patriotism by suddnely being Proud of America, and he has the naivete to meet with every despicable leader of the world without due process of building up to the point of a meeting by creating certain humanitarian thresholds being met by these despicable leaders.
I cannot fathom Americans can be this gullible and cannot see through this guy. They did it once with George W Bush and they are doing it again with this guy! Americans need to be careful at this historic time of all our lives. The only viable canditates that are left are Sens. Clinton and McCain. Either one would protect America's interests like they need protected. So whether you are a democrat, republican or an independent - please be SMART and ask this media darling guy the tough questions.
Unfortunately, the Media is at it again - they failed to ask the tough questions during the Iraq Crisis because they were scared at being labelled unpatriotic and this time they are failing to whet this candidate adequately because they are afraid of coming off as racially insensitive! Give me a break!

Is he morally corrupt, after all wasn't he married when he got together with his current trophy wife Cindy? Perhaps Old John had tired of Cindy and wanted some new "Young Woman" and why not get one with a good paying client?

  • Posted By: Doughboy57 @ 02/22/2008 4:36:34 PM

Why do we have to make such a media frenzy over an affair no one says actually happened or a letter he may or may not have writen to help a friend / lobbist? I'm not a McCain supporter - Obama actually - but this just smells of the need to create news to sell papers and false excitement. Doughboy57

You are right. The NYT got sell the papers some how.

So in the matter of corruption, the testimony as stated in the article says McCain did not ask the FCC to approve or deny the sale but instead to simply make a decision. Therefore, there is absolutely no evidence of corruption but perhaps evidence that McCain didn't remember accurately all the details that happened 8 years ago. Readers that don't follow the details closely will remember the accusations and not these facts..

    • Posted By: manjoemoe @ 02/22/2008 4:38:42 PM

Its call quid pro quo, this for that, I give you a campaign contribution and free air fare and you lean on the FCC will all the weight of a U.S Senator. Yes, I like most Americans, like to feel that our elected officials are responsive to there constituents needs, If memory serves me, Senator McCain represents the State of Arizona, and Ms Isemans???s client, Florida based Paxson Communications, who wished to purchase a Pittsburg PA television station. It is a bit a stretch to say the good Senator was serving his constituents. You are correct in stating that is how our government runs, but not how it should. The Congress is "supposed" to represent the interests of ALL Americans, not just those with the money to "buy access" the polite way to spin buying a legislator. Unfortunately, this is neither a Republican nor Democratic problem. It is past time that the American people take back control of our government from all the special interest. Then and only then will our elected officials focus on the problems that face our nation not just the problems that face the moneyed and privileged few. The issue isn???t that McCain or any other elected official did or didn???t break the law, rather, that the practice of buying influence is considered ???politics as usual??? is.

This is a classic demonstration of the Selective Criminalization of the Proper Function Of Government. Liberal democrats like Michael Isikoff use innuendo and vague insinuations to create the appearance of impropriety. Which is the standard for republicans, and republicans only. Lobbyists are not "evil." Lobbyists represent YOUR interests. The selective demonization of lobbyists and lobbying is a tool used by political hacks to demonize along partisan lines. A company is paralyzed by a dithering government bureaucracy. Fighting for their life, and the life of their employees, a company hires a lobbyist who tries to break the gridlock. The senator asks the bureaucracy to act. He did not ask them to act in one way or another, but only to act. Isn't it terrible. Allowing the paralysis of government to wreck the company would have been much better. All part of The Big Lie.

If you really believe everything written by the media-Then I have scoop for you- Did you know that Hillary and Bill Clinton are the reincarnation of Evita and Juan Peron? Just think about it.

  • Posted By: southerbee @ 02/22/2008 2:28:23 PM

This is sad! Why does every politician lied about something they've done in the past? And to respond to jj2000 about the comment saying "that we gave the nuclear buttons to a clown these past 8 years", is so beyond false! If you recall Bill Clinton was the one who brought these issues to the forefront at the end of his term and George W. Bush was merely responding to these so called accusations of Iraq "having weapons of mass destruction. Unfortunately this poor guy has been treated like a moron for most of his presidency. But everyone fails to see the faults in past presidents. What about Bill Clinton he wasn't a good president at all but yet no one seems to remember his bad choices. I have a close family member that knows a lot about past presidents by working in the white house and has seen it all. Asking him what president did he think was the worst he said hands down it was Bill Clinton! And he has been a part of presidents Reagen until the year 2006 with Pres. Bush. All Mr. Clinton do was sign a bunch of laws that ended up hurting people that needed assistance or money from the government. I think he spent more time cheating on his wife, I feel bad for him but if we get McCain in office I'm afraid we're just going to get another Bill Clinton. And unfortunately the only good Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, decided to end his run. So now I am fully supporting OBAMA! He is very smart, and seems to be an all aroung decent guy. GO OBAMA!

OBAMA IS A TRUE MUSLIM. A TRUE MUSLIM IS GOING TO PUSH ALL THE NUKE BUTTONS AT ONCE. They send their retarded already draped with C-4. WATCH OUT AMERICA IF YOU FALL FOR THIS ONE.

Once again we are expected to accept a story from The New York Times, from an ANON. SOURCE, that the allegations again McCain are true. What a CROCK. The ultra-leftist Times has been caught before using sources and stories that were later proven false. Then trying, unsuccesfully, in my mind, to slide out of responsibility by suggesting the reporter on the story was at fault. Come on people, we, and McCain, could bring up lots of allegations about Hilary and Barack that would prove just as false. Although I doubt we would see them in the Times.

I wonder if we can get the 3 goofy people to stop campaning and do nothing untill November. The media would have nothing to do, that can not happen. Nice thought.

tboone - John McCain's arms were seriously damaged as a POW in the Viet Nam war, so think about what this guy did for us befor you open your snarky mouth again. I quote the king of Spain, "Porque no te callas?"
In case an ignorant idiot like you doens't know Spanish, it means, why don't you just shut up?

    • Posted By: magicmann @ 02/22/2008 4:32:34 PM

Yeah well maybe you should ask some of the other residents of the Hanoi Hilton if John was so upstanding. Do a search on the "songbird chronicles" and learn how impressive this guy really is!!! He called the family members of POW's and POW's themselves whiny cry babies. He isn't who you think he is!!!

    • Posted By: tboone @ 02/22/2008 4:27:36 PM

I am perfectly aware of how McCain was injured. That does not make my statement any less accurate. And what???s the deal with letting ???Youcannottrickme??? off the hook? It was his post in the first place. I was not aware, however, of anything the Vietnam War did for ???us??? or how McCain???s service in that war contributed to my well-being. In fact, I defy anyone to show how that war, or the most recent debacles, contributed to our ???freedom??? as the neo-cons are so quick to recite. If anything, our country is less free than ever before.

And this one will really get your blood boiling, but how is McCain a war hero? I thought the idea was NOT to get shot down and NOT get tortured. He even admits that he broke under some minor torturing. Well, perhaps it was not so minor. But that torturing must not have been too bad since he failed to stand his ground when Bush successfully made torture legal in the U.S. a couple of years ago. Moreover, his own incompetence contributed to one of the worst self-inflicted military disasters in U.S. history on the U.S. Forrestal. Sounds to me like the guy is jinxed, bad shoulders and all.

to Rubensr, It could certainly get worse. Much worse. We don't need a neo-phyte getting his on the job training in the highest office of the land in the most powerful country in the world.

    • Posted By: tboone @ 02/22/2008 4:29:59 PM

What you mean Bush is running again?

  • Posted By: Andyb1964 @ 02/22/2008 12:22:52 PM

This is totally unfair. Why hasn't the New York Times or any mainstream media do a story on Obama and his alleged lover Larry Sinclair ? Just because he is a black man and nobody can criticize him without being labeled as racist?

    • Posted By: mouseinboots @ 02/22/2008 1:12:33 PM

I agree Andyb1964 not ONE media source other than "youtube" have yet to have the courage to even attempt to investigate Larry Sinclair's statement concrerning Obama using drugs in 2006 and having sex with a homosexual all while he was a U.S. Senator. If the media is going to report fairly then investigate this allegations since it appears all that is needed these days are allegations without proof.

      • Posted By: alltaken @ 02/22/2008 4:29:55 PM

Media report fairly? Now I am laughing.

And remember the Democrat rallying cry, "it is the seriousness of the charge". Of course if you are Democrat found with $90,000 wraped in foil hidden in your freeze, they you are free to remain in the Senate and hold all of your committee chairs. Of course if you are a Republican and tell an off color joke at a Birthday Party, you are through. And if a Republican is seen wiht a woman as opposed to have *** stained dresses floating around and dozens of similar sex stories, you are done.

WE are used to it. The left are lies and as corrupt as they come.

    • Posted By: Bullwinkle @ 02/22/2008 2:44:23 PM

The two of you seem confused on how this stuff works. Anybody (and I do mean anybody) can claim to have done something with anybody else. Unless there are witnesses, it's just one person's word against another -- which counts for absolutely NOTHING. In fact, even a lie detector test won't help since they're fallible (ESPECIALLY with a socio- or psychopath), that's why the results are not permissible in court. Contrast the ramblings of some lunatic wanting attention with a man who was already involved in a related court case and now provide testimony that is in contradiction to one he provided earlier. Hey, I wasn't there, but evidently SOMEBODY has some facts! The most effective way to clear your guy's name is to focus on defending him through your chats. Try to divert attention to someone else only makes your guy look MORE guilty!

    • Posted By: Alexander9bears @ 02/22/2008 12:56:06 PM

To Andyb1964: Don't you think if and when the right wing media in this country get any kind of proof, oh hell they don't need proof, of anything bad about Obama that they won't slather it all over bathroom wall? C'mon, get real!

  • Posted By: SanBar @ 02/22/2008 4:29:39 PM

Why would any qualified man or woman, black or white or hispanic etc, want to be President? Look at what they have to go thru to get there. Does anyone really think that John McCain is a less than honorable man? Look what the Times is trying to do to him.

I'm not sure as well as ALL the American votes can trust anything these polititans will say to get what they want. None of the candidates we have to choose from do not desire to be our President. You can trust any of them...from being liars, back stabbers, manipulators to gain office as well as having a muslin background...we, the american people don't need that problem at all!!

Get over it!! We have more important issues to deal with in this country. Healthcare, the War in Iraq, and immigration reform. I am an independent voter so not necessarily prejudiced in McCain's favor. Still I am very tired of investigative reporting for dirt. I would like to see reporters work toward putting more social issues in the news and helping us solve the problems. It seems to me they propagate these stories and keep them going for commerical reasons. News should inform for the common good of society. Tell the story and get on with it. Let people decide for themselves who has character and who doesn't.

  • Posted By: jokraina @ 02/22/2008 3:21:24 PM

In a presidential election, all is fair when digging into their lives, however, I feel you may have jumped the gun a bit. First, with all of the stalled bills in Congress, it is common for many senators to call and ask what is going on with a bill and to strongly urge that the bill be brought to the floor for an up or down vote. No harm/no foul. The true corruption is not in McCain's calling, if he did, but in Congress "Stalling" legitimate bills that need to go forward. There are almost a hundred judges that COngress is stalling on. It is unconstitutional and totally corrupt to hold these judges because they might be "too" conservative, or to hold them hostage because they want to use this stalling as a bargaining chip. That is dirty, dishonest politicing at its core.
If McCain is guilty of wrongdoing, then you need to investigate, but reporting should be done after thorough examination of the facts, which you didn't do.
I am amazed that you would focus on this rather than on Hillary Clinton's rise to power and the more than 40 people who mysteriously died who were affiliated with the Clinton's ascent to power. This is huge. This is egregious and it amazes me that American's wouldn't demand a full, thorough investigation of the facts surrounding these allegations. She is not fit for the White House.
I also want to know how Hillary pulled off becoming New York Senator when she was a resident of ARkansas, and a temporary resident of D.C. When you run for office, there are strict requirements for residency. Why aren't you investigating these facts and exposing them? I want to know an exact timeline and see the paperwork to prove it.
The public also needs to know the voting records of each candidate. Publish them. Let us see every bill they voted on and how they voted. That is critical information about their character. It will reveal how they will handle their responsibilities in the White House.
We also need to see line by line campaign finance reports. We need to know who is backing these candidates and what will be expected of them in the White House.
If Obama has any ties to any Muslim extremist groups, even peripherally, he would be a danger to America. If there are any ties to Louis Farrakan, then he is not worthy of sitting in the Oval Office.
Go do some real digging, some real investigating and then report the truth and the facts.
Forget what these politicians are saying. It's just rhetoric to get into the most powerful office in the land.
Let's look at their track records and see their true colors.

    • Posted By: damilkman @ 02/22/2008 4:26:49 PM

jokraina, do you seriously think Obama could do more damage to our country than George Bush? What's he gonna do, give Bin Laden the launch codes for all of our nukes. Smuggle in his terrorist bretheren? Convert all Christians to Islam? Use our military to attach white people? Come on, give me your theory...

    • Posted By: ceriman @ 02/22/2008 4:25:49 PM

You really are grasping at straws. The Far Right zealots were doing everything in their power to dethrone the Clintons, following up every little rumor and scandalous lie, and all they could come up with is: Bill had an affair and lied about it. What, you want to blame his long suffering wife for that?
In their rise to power, the Clintons, like every other politician, had thousands of contacts and associates. What would be truly remoarkable is if none had died over the past several decades, but alas, they are all mortal, and some have passed on. If there was any proof of Clinton involvement in those deaths, the right wing Pundits would be all over it - but even Rush hasn't been able to prove diddly-squat.
If Hiliary had been in any way inelegable for her Senatorial run, her Republican opponents would have gleefuly pounced on it and used it. That didn't happen. Sorry, Sentator Hilary Clinton is totally legit.

Most people do not want to take the time or effort to research a candidates voting record to educate themselves. It is public information and easily accessible. I admit that it is not always easy to understand the lawmaking process. However, it is apparent that many people would rather form and opinion based on a headline or the spindoctors version of the "facts" instead of thinking for themselves. Apathy and laziness is alive and well in this country!
