What do you guys think lobbyists do? thats their job and senators work with them this isnt some underhanded scheme its called american politics. as for the romantic angle aids thought he was getting a little to close to someone he worked with and stepped in. Does that not take place everyday in the real world. You work long hours with a beautiful woman or a powerful man or just the coffee girl and one of your friends says hey mac its not looking good with all the time your spending with cindy. You get the message and you break it off. I dont particularly care for Mccain one way or another but for god sakes leave the man alone unless you have some evidence he is a serial philanderer or he does something that could endanger this nation this is an obvious smear campaign.

We should find a way to ban all lobbyist access to candidates. The whole system is corrupt.

Good Gosh. I have read and followed John McCain's life and read the testimonials of those in captivity with him in Hanoi. The man really is incredible. The sacrifices he made for his fellow POW's and the huge sacrifices he made for our country are overwhelming. The media needs to GET OVER IT!!!

    • Posted By: douglassoileau @ 02/22/2008 2:48:26 PM

Sacrifices ??? Yea, he really has sacrificed his service in the Senate, Divorced his wife after an automobile accident and yes he has sacrificed, republican values for Ted Kennedy, Russ Fiengold, Joe Liberman and Nancy Polosie, the question is who did he sacrifice for and what did he sacrifice.......His sacrifices sure hasn't hurt him........

STOP in the name of us voters. STOP wasting trees. The Times has no creditability with me. Why don't they investigate Obama who claims he gets his spiritual leadership from a church and Pastor, who promotes Ferikan who hates white people. Obama and his Pastor must laugh watching all these stupid white folks
"come to Obama"...in a daze as if they are "coming t Jesus".

This is ignorant and ridiculous. I have personally been to this church on more than one occasion and what you are saying is an outright lie. This is a Christian church on the southside of Chicago off of 95th Street and it has nothing to do with Louis Farrakhan, whose name you mispelled. There is nothing wrong with a church telling its members, largely poor and black, and who have not had a lot of opportunities, that there is nothing wrong with you being black and that we will help uplift you. That is different than supremacy that calls for people to not be able to progress and that has lynched and killed thousands of people based on race. A lot of these youngsters have internalized a sense of self hatred that manifests itself in a lot of ways. This church does not hate white people; it seeks to let disadvantaged blacks know that they should also have a reason to be proud and confident. You need to get your facts straight. The only thing laughable on here is how ignorant this post is.

Give McCain a break. He's 71 years old! He probably just had a "senior moment".

    • Posted By: abe4600 @ 02/22/2008 2:44:48 PM

Instead of "I did not have lobbying relations with that woman.", I think he should be proud of it. I would if I am in tha position at 72years old.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/22/2008 2:48:00 PM

Yeah. Next we'll find out that he did favors for the makers of Viagra.

Hillary can you please console Mccain's wife and explain to her how to pick up the peices. I'm sure she is devestated.

McCain Did clear it up. Let's take a look at the blogs for a second. First off, he stated that he talked to Paxon. I do not ever recall hearing him say that he never talked to Paxon. The question the reporter asked was whether or not he talked to the Lobbyist about it. Secondly, the letter that he sent didn't strong arm the FCC to make a favorable decision, but only to make a decision.
What are you people complaining about? The man has a right to talk to a campaign contributor. He has a right to ensure that the Beauracracy functions. He has an obligation as a Congressional Member to provide Congressional OVersight to an organization that clearly was resting on its laurals.
I mean really people, there is no impropriety here accept possibly that the man could not recall last night a conversation that he had 8 years ago. Jesus, could any of you? This matter of Congressional oversight is about as routine a matter for a Senior Senator as you all deciding what to have for lunch. So I ask you, what did you have for lunch, 8 years ago today?

Can we please just elect Obama today and get started with the great American recovery already.

  • Posted By: ara9557 @ 02/22/2008 2:31:43 PM

Its not so much the lobbyist thing that bothered me. Politicians have to deal with lobbyist all the time even John McCain. Its the smutty part of inferring that he had an affair with the lobbyist. If you don't have proof, why even mention it. Bringing people down to enrich circulation or I hate to think to persuade voters without proof is just wrong. Shame on you New York Times.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/22/2008 2:45:29 PM

They didn't say he had an affair. They simply stated the corroborated fact that his handlers were worried that their relationship went beyond normal politician/lobbyist.

I think it's funny when people call people delusional or over the top in their support for Obama. People are excited about Obama because he's not taking money from Lobbyists and PACs and they know that there's not one of these stories always lurking around the corner. When you're not declaring lobbyists and PAC's off limits like Obama, then you're on the take. When you're on the take, it's only a matter of time until it comes out.

Obama took money from Exelon while familes that were being poisoned by tritium from one of their plants were thinking HE WAS HELPING THEM. Oh he helped out alright... made reporting leaks VOLUNTARY for nuclear power plants. What a humanitarian. I gues Exelong got their $200+K worth! Hypocrites all of you!

We were in Germany for nearly 60 years after the fall of the Nazi party. The end of WWII was the start of the Cold War and led to engagements in Korea and Veitnam. Positioning troops in accordance with our Nato Allies and our interests are part and parcel to the Global Political works of this planet. It does not phase the Islamo-facist movement to send Arabs to the Phillipines, or to send Syrians to Afghanistan.
Our troops will have a presence and should have a presence in the Middle-East as long as we have a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia. Which, by the way, is the reason why both Persian Gulf wars occurred. The Democratic Party seems to have a problem with actually accomplishing something. They have candidates that want to talk about change yet espouse how much experience they have in National Politics. Those of thier candidates that have little experience in National Politics seem to be getting their political war cry of change from the children's television show "Bob the builder."

Though I personally would have liked to have seen Romney as the candidate, I must admit that any Republican candidate is better qualified, and more competent a leader than either of the Democratic Candidates.

Considering the Democratic Parties utter disdain for our soldiers and thier mission. Having called them, Stupid--John Kerry, ineffective -- Hillary Clinton, baby-killers--Barack Obama, I do not see any good coming from putting any Democratic Candidate into public office at any level, let alone the National Level.

Someone from Germany should recognize the seeds of American fascism represented by the current Republican party.

I'd sooner vote for a honest and competent cross dressing HIV positive transgendered deat mute amputee lesbian quadrapalepalegic cross-eyed liberal with a sickening southern accent than Hillary Clinton.

    • Posted By: divad @ 02/22/2008 2:44:07 PM

      I agree...so vote for Obama.

  • Posted By: amiblue @ 02/22/2008 2:42:44 PM

Having taken money from the lobbyist's client, and having ridden in their corporate jet (whether or not he paid is not indicated, but it is certain he was not charged the true cost of the flights), McCain should have recused himself from the matter and passed it on to another Senator--preferably the one whose constitutent was involved--apparantly Florida. McCain has been a consistend advocate for business interests, and has used his committee assignments as a magnet for business campaign contributions, and he has returned the favor in his service of business interests in the Senate.. This may have been perfectly legal, but it is a myth that McCain is some kind of left-wing independent Republican.

I love how republicans continue to make claims like Dems just want to turn the country into the USSR and that they are all "idiots". First, I point out that Bush's USA looks a lot more like the USSR than any prior time in American history (e.g. gulags and torture, suspicious elections, rampant cronyism, illegal wire-tapping, resource plundering (I could go on for pages)). And second, all you have to do is look at the prevailing educational background of Dems vs. Republicans to see who the real idiots are. Heck, you don't even have to do that. Just look at the parts of the country that keep these shameless tyrants in power - its like a scene from Deliverance!

You guys wonder why we make personal attacks? Take a look at my post. Now take a look at the comments. Which part prompted the responses? Was it the candid description of the deterioration of our country? Nope, it was the subtle implication that the rural areas of this country are the one's responsible for propping up this regime and the subsequent degradation of this country. Also, as could probably have surmised - but intentionally did not - I was responding to several prior posts; all replete with personal attacks. So I find your 'wounded psyche' arguments all the more entertaining when you get a little of your own medicine. Go cuddle a gun.

    • Posted By: Cal_Culus @ 02/22/2008 1:34:39 PM

tboone, it is certainly a pleasure to see that you have 'risen' above these judgemental attacks that you speak of. No judgemental or elitism in your comments . . . are there? Education has something to do with whether a person is an idiot or not? You have gone far to show that a Democrat can be open minded, nonjudgemental, and above the 'political' stuff. You know it might just be that a 'legitimate' liberal minded Democrat simply has a different view of approaching the issues in life than a 'legitimate' conservative minded Republican. It's really stinko how people such as yourself and others 'in either party' make this a personal attack instead of a legitimate discussion on how to approach the problems of the world. I hear so often that if someone has a different opinion . . . that he/she has their character attacked instead of putting forth a sincere and legitimate argument for their view . . . I suppose it just means that these particular people don't have any depth in their views or opinions. But then, maybe you're right . . . I need an education in order to transform myself into a more 'perfect' person such as yourself.

Excuse me...as a Michigander who now lives in Mississippi, I take exception to this comment. The majority of residents are highly intelligent. The only difference from you obviously is a high moral character, which you certainly don't exhibit here with those inflamitory statements. YOUR ignorance is showing little man.

SHAME-SHAME-SHAME. REMEMBER TED KENNEDY LEFT A WOMAN TO DIE BY DROWING TIME DI NOT PRINT ANYTHING AGAINST HIM AT HIS NEXT ELECTION. THE CLINTONS NO BAD REMARKS AGAINST THEM AND THE THINGS THEY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN, WHAT A STORY THAT WOULD MAKE. As to McBush, he favors staying in Iraq for 100 more years, McBush tax cuts for those making over $250 K and chases lobbyist skirts. He has a combination of bad qualities of the past two Presidents that we can do without. My Friends, he???s cooked!
