It is clear to me that we continue to rail against only some politicians and not all. Evidence clearly exists that Americans will tolerate and revere a politician who lied under oath about his behavior but now we are in a "lather" about this story? Perhaps the journalists could finish their investigations with actual facts and evidence beforepublication? Where is the same standard used during the Clinton years ?

  • Posted By: sickof hypocrisy @ 02/23/2008 10:27:37 AM

Clearly our nation is "comfortable" with Democratic politians who stretch the truth in recollections of indiscrete behavior. Evidence exists to support the claim that wives of such politicians tacitly approve of the behavior. I fail to see why media people are in a lather about other potential indiscrete behavior, especially when the journalism is completed in a shoddy manner. What does this say about our society when a President can lie under oath and later be revered by many as a wonderful leader? Why are these same people now upset about another perceived instance of corruption? If one can accept lying under oath , what is the big deal now? Especially whenthe "now" is so unclear that it actually happened?

If McCain did succumb to the temptation of this lobbyist - perhaps he can be punished as was Bill Clinton - who earns a fine income retreading his claptrap of change.

Obviously McCain is desperate to conceal his fatal relapses and blunders. Even faced with such compelling depositions of himself, the senator still shamelessly disavows the fact.

Comments like Jaydee2's detract from the facts as stated by Wolff's article. Why does the media concentrate on the unproveable and miss the fact that McCain took favors!!! Simple!! Maybe legal but undeniable. Thanks for cutting through all the wrong logic that's on tv and radio.

"A Hole", cause of Mccain's defense ! Now that's the headline. sure John we believe ya, just as we always have.......we never suspected anything of the backroom dealings you were involved in...How dare the media accuse you of not being "upright", (no pun intended), and (straight forward).! I am appauled at heir attitude.....Accusing you of being a traitor and a communist sympothizer is one thing but this is obsurd.

Please come back Mitt Romney !!!

  • Posted By: mullinjf @ 02/23/2008 4:28:22 AM

Come on, bottom line he listened and action only taken was letter saying make a decision in a reasonable time and no influence. This is the problem with the press and why more honorable people like McCain do not get into politics. He wants to reform the process and he is hit by republicans and wants to listen to everyone and is hit by democrates. Let the man do his job for all our best interest and stop the negativity. Look at your selves, have you ever misspoke or balanced two evils to accomplish a good. Wonder why our goverment is in the shape it is.

Thank you Newsweek for good solid reporting on McCains documented evidence of contrary remarks he has made regarding his direct communication with the corporate rats he claims to fight against. These lies, that are documented will catch up with him during the election. Especially after his nomination. I applaud your exposing all political figures. This kind of politician is what is so bad for America.

  • Posted By: pduncan2000 @ 02/23/2008 1:13:33 AM

This is a good story Newsweek. Thank you and the New York Times for great reporting of the misrepresentation of all politicians. The right wing extremist are already fuming over their only real and last choice for a presidential candidate. Now McCain is going to spontaneously combust in the polls after he reaches the nomination stage. I expect this to be the most lopsided victory for Democrats in my lifetime. Please

It is still the Far Far West around here: You shoot first and you talk after. Come on, "my friend" the barbaric times are long over, let's talk first or one day it is not only the "mohammeds" who gonna come after you but the entire world. By the way are you afraid of anything? Or are you paranoid?

re Civics Lesson from the uniformed person who Saw Your Mommy - yopu too Druid: The bicameral Legislature (2 Houses of Congress) had nothing to do with schools of thought regarding our gov't doing what it wants ... and the rest of your uninformed drivel. It was a debate over (1) the relative power of the States (many considered themselves to be sovereign, issued their own money and postage and even had trade barriers) and (2) the need to represent individuals. The Senate gives equal voice to each State, and the House of Representatives represent the people based on population. Think about certain responsibilities of each; ALL money matters/legislation must originate in the House (representating the populace) whereas the Senate has "Advice and Consent" on Treaties and certain appointments. It seems many need to go back to school - I suggest you start with the Articles of Confederatrion and then actually read the Constitution paying attention to the Preamble "In order to form a more perfect Union ...".

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/23/2008 12:30:51 AM

No, it does not start with the Constitution. It ends with the Constitution. It starts with various of the Federalist papers written by and among those who disagreed. You're right on the general representative natures of the two chambers, but that's a superficial conclusion that doesn't explain the tension among the founders.

Comment: This election season has nothing to do with platforms and politics it's merely a case study in generational ideologies. It seems to me a lot people can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that younger generations do not put up with ignorant obsolete sanctimonious old people because we don't have to. You guys (i.e. ignorant, prejudiced, scared of everyone that isn't white and speaks english fogeys)...(republicans) do nothing but get in the way of progress, oh and by the way in case you didn't realize it yet it isn't your country anymore, it's ours now. You guys (you know who you are, see above if you are confused) have, since day one made decisions based on fears and prejudices that your parents believed in or maybe a preacher taught you or perhaps were generally accepted in the time period when you grew up, I'm sorry but we just don't do that anymore you guys are done and if you don't think so you will have your pompous high and mighty name run through the mud until you understand that you are nothing more than a regular flawed person just like the rest of us. Most people in their 20's and 30's and 40's are not going to vote for McCain for one simple reason, fear tactics don't work on us, sorry Mac. You guys will never get it and you need to, you see pious right wing evangelical fear mongering is over with now. It was like communism, sure it had its heyday, and it worked when people were poor and ignorant, but had no staying power because its success was dependent on keeping people stupid and afraid. Consider swallowing that big bitter pill of reality and recognize (as soon as possible) that hating, killing, prejudice, and bigotry was a defining characteristics of YOUR generation not ours. Your time has passed.

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/22/2008 10:18:08 PM

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm part of this buffoon's generation. Apparently, his part of (unfortunately) our generation did not learn to spell or construct sentences. Even more unfortunate is that he or she appears to be exactly what he or she despites. What a sanctimonious position to take: this is our world and not yours? Is that what you tell your parents or your grandparents? Do you call them "fogeys" when you do it? And what makes it yours? Have you somehow managed to amend the Constitution, with no one being the wiser, to terminate the right to vote at 49? What a crapball - you are both stupid and the reason that political discourse in this country has fallen so far.

      • Posted By: bigbrewhaha @ 02/22/2008 11:15:49 PM

Sorry to have offended you, boo hoo.

        • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/23/2008 12:23:54 AM

You didn't offend me. You embarrassed me, and the rest of us who have to share a generation with you.

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/22/2008 10:20:34 PM

And I forgot. Communism? It worked when people were young and ignorant? Actually, outside Sweden, it never worked at all. So, you should think of moving to Sweden: I don't know if you're poor, but you are most certainly ignorant.

      • Posted By: bigbrewhaha @ 02/22/2008 11:16:31 PM

Doesn't Sweden have a great health care system?

        • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/23/2008 12:22:43 AM

And a tax rate north of 50%, yes. But again, Sweden stands alone as a success in the communist endeavor.

    • Posted By: Oldcrank @ 02/22/2008 10:03:29 PM

Apparently the time of writing concise and grammatically correct sentences is also past. My generation is handing over our culture to a generation of ill-educated louts.

Grumble, how can i make a call with this thing if its not connected to the wall... new fangled.... grumble, grumble

  • Posted By: eabg_22 @ 02/22/2008 6:47:51 PM

I love how people write " as an independent" or "Im an independent" and then go on to write the most partisan crazy opinions, and think we count them with higher esteem because...look...it says right there....im an independent

    • Posted By: indepent2008 @ 02/22/2008 8:03:59 PM

You got a problem with Independents, you should want to make friends with us after all it may be some us that wind up voting for your sorry a** candidate whether you are a democrat or a republican. Have a mind of your own and quit looking for coattails to ride. Its about loving America as an adult, not like a kid loves their mother. Being an independent sets us apart from people like you and the rocket scientist who agreed with you. Have fun in the sand box.

      • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/22/2008 8:17:02 PM

And just who are "people like [me]"? You apparently missed the point. I don't care whether you're red, blue or independent. If you have a valid point, make it. You don't need to say you're an independent if you point is valid. Too often, comments begin "I'm an independent" and then continue with inanity.

        • Posted By: indepent2008 @ 02/22/2008 8:37:20 PM

Let the master speak, you have been cutting people down all bleeping evening. People can state their party its their right you know. Last I checked the First Amendment still applies. You have been cutting every person who said something negative about McCain down like their opinion dont count because its not Neo Con approved. You want to have an intelligent conversation fine, but how about leading by example?

          • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/23/2008 12:16:20 AM

First of all, the First Amendment is a restriction on government, and I'm not the government. Second, you need to read my comments closer. I'm no McCain fan and you'll see that if you pay attention. But again, you're missing the point: the validity of any single comment has nothing to do with the political affiliation or lack thereof of the person making it; it lies instead in the comment itself.

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/22/2008 6:58:20 PM

I love that, too. So many idiots. They're so stupid that they think I'm going to fall for it. It's as if they can say, "So, I'm a stupid independent," and then everything they say after that must be treated as coming from the heavens.

Pottymouth? What are you, my mother? And not one of my comments has been censored for language.

    • Posted By: ISawYourMommy @ 02/22/2008 8:52:09 PM

I think Cindy McCain is hotter than Vicky Iseman. But then again, I've never seen either in person, or in the buff, so maybe I should hold my tongue.

  • Posted By: ishia1 @ 02/22/2008 11:59:03 PM

New York TImes and Newsweek have showed us the people what John McCain as become.thanks job well done

  • Posted By: mitchflorida @ 02/22/2008 11:57:45 PM

    Who cares about this ***?

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 02/22/2008 11:55:57 PM

"Curiouser and curiouser/" Actually according to Air America, McCain's so called "dealings" with lobbyist Vicki Iseman is not new news. A report appeared on the Drudge Internet Report last December. The right wing crew did not choose to go on attack mode against Matt Drudge. McCain's lobbying activites were first reported in the Boston Globe about 8 years ago. Why did all the right wing pundits decide to stage their crusade now?

Even stranger is the article I just read on Earthlink.net.In that article, McCain is actually defending his lobbying activities. Isn't this an example of the same sot of flip-floping that McCain accused Kerry of doing? This all sounds like one more example of GOP hypocrisy.

"There's only "a dime's worth of difference" between the Republican and Democratic parties, and they're fighting over that dime! "
    Obama, Clinton, McCain, Huckabee --
    1. All voted to continue funding the Iraq War.
    2. All support "comprehensive immigration reform" -- Washington speak for Amnesty for illegal aliens. They want their big corporation buddies to be happy now don't they with their cheap labor. Meanwhile we pay higher taxes to offset the burden that would put on Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare. If you subsidize something you get more of it, the more we subsidize illegal immigration the more we will get of it, and the more illegal alien families will be affected and hurt.
    3. All wish to enact some socialist program or another for the "greater good" -- Translation, we want you to pay higher taxes so we (the federal government) can spend it in the way that benefits our special interest group. Obama (Health care insurance companies), Clinton ( Pharmaceuticals), McCain (Military industrial complex including all military corporations), Huckabee (Military industrial complex).
    4. All are for reforming Washington and ridding it of government and lobbyist control (well so they say).
    5. All support the Patriot Act (a direct violation of our civil liberties)

    • Posted By: bitterblogger @ 02/22/2008 11:09:32 PM

J Druid--long on opinion, short on facts. Obama has consistently been against the war. Both Clinton and Obama are against most of the Patriot Act. Too bad for you your guy Duncan Hunter is out--Mr. One Percent (and that's just hard-right Republicans). So sad!

      • Posted By: J Druid @ 02/22/2008 11:43:16 PM

Check your facts.... Obama and Clinton both Voted FOR the Patriot Act.
It's the actual voting record that matters, not the retoric.

        • Posted By: J Druid @ 02/22/2008 11:46:59 PM

Obama Voted FOR the continued funding of the unconstitutional Iraq War that he is morally against -- That's hypocritical.

  • Posted By: toulsongroup @ 02/22/2008 11:09:02 PM

Are you going to let Mr. McCain and his staff off the hook? It's clear he and his staff are lying. What will Newsweek do about it or is Newsweek afraid of the right-wing of the Republican party. G. Toulson @2/22/2008.
