This is such classic beltway journaism, and yes, it does reflect the group-think mentatilty of the East Coast New York/D.C. media cabal First we have a non-story by The New York Times. Instead of possibly investigating what might have led The Times (what a remarkable thought!) to do what it did, we now attack McCain on the second day of the news cycle (hole in his defense) with equally shallow and unsubstantial information. Now THAT becomes the story, trying to cast more doubt on McCain, and it conventiently tries to divert attention from the criticism that should be growing for The Times less-than-professional work. The smear and attack tactics to satisfy the agenda of an increasingly partisan press is going to ruin this country. We are regressing to the era or the "yellow" or muckraking press of more than a century ago. The only good thing from that is that the current trends will accelerate the demise of the big national media that has dominated the news agenda of this country for the last 60-70 years. The internet has diminished the gatekeeper role of this media and we now ALL have a voice. Soon our collective voices may make irrelevent the shoddy tactics of partisan journalists. But the challenge will be for each of us to seek and find the truth, not from some hard right or left rant on the internet, but somewhere in the middle. Interesting, but disturbing times.
