Give up civil liberties is a hoax. If your not calling Aukmed for bomb parts, or planning the next 9/11 what are
you afraid of? The ostrich mentality, is a poor substitute for addressing fears or concerns of terrorism. The
people that seek to kill Americans, don't respond to logic or reason any more than a Kamikazi pilot would
in WWII. Calls in & out of the U.S. should be open to review. Was 9/11 a scare tactic?

9/11 was an attack by terrorists, but it is being used as a scare tactic by the Neocons. As for an ostrich mentality, most people are just concerned citizens who are acutely aware of the slippery slope that comes with giving government too much power.

Telecoms should not cooperate with eavesdropping requests not contained in a FISA court warrant. Now, lil George and his gang cannot bully them into "being Patriotic", without adult (court) supervision. "Rule of Law" cuts both ways.

Bravo!! Im sure Im not alone in wanting the new president to empanel special investigators regarding violation of FISA and pre war intelligence so that justice may be done for 4000 dead soldiers

The Bush administration for years was listening to domestic electronic communications witjout a warrant, in direct violation of the FISA law. Bush now wants to extend yet another immunity to telecom companies like he did for hmself and his administration.

The recently expired law allowed them to continue to violate American traditions while being techically and legally correct. That's ended. I applaud that. We need a new "Protect America" law that that ehlps scure the country while keeping our constitutional protections intact. Also, Im sure Im not alone in wanting the next President to empanel special investigators into this affair as well as the prewar intelligence. 4000 dead soldiers demand justice.

If it was so important to keep the spying on Americans going - the Terrorist-in-Chief should not have put the country at risk by refusing to extend the current law while the decisions about something so important continued.

    Whine, Whine Whine
McConnell and Mukasey need to go to the FISA Court and get WARRANTS like they should have for the last 6 years before snooping in my affairs.

I agree. The law was what it was when W and Darth Cheney decided to take end runs around it. No one, not even the Emperor OR the Dark Lotd of the Birdshot, should be able to break it with impunity. That little *** voice in the back of the telecom's lawyers' heads. Think way, way back guys - thatt's called a conscience, and you are probably overdue for a hearing aid.

political correct, earth worship, abortion, state run business equals Liberal Fascism.

  • Posted By: oledog65 @ 02/22/2008 7:28:51 PM

no one is above the law somebody tell that to this imposter in the white house

  • Posted By: faminchin @ 02/22/2008 7:28:13 PM

What a country! Our congress critizes the newly formed Iraqi government for not getting anything done, while they allow a law that have saved countless American lives to lapse. We would have leaned about the Mall Bombers, after they killed who knows how many innocent people without this law. We would have learned about the group in Miami, after they had killed who knows how many people without this law. The two tons of explosives intercepted at the Canadian border would now be somewhere in our country without this law.......................and all anybody seems to care about is making sure Bush doesn't get what he wants............and all the telecom companies care about is not getting sued.

It's as if we want to pretend that their aren't Islamic Extremist trying to kill us again, the same way we did for 20 years leading up to 9/11. It's as if we want to pretend 9/11 never happened.

    spying, secret prisons, fear.............fascism

  • Posted By: Robert----55 @ 02/22/2008 7:25:22 PM

Cherrib I agree. Theirs more fervor for drumming up hat for W. than protecting our country
from the aclu's next group of clients. Maybe we can sue the terrorists to death. terrorism
must be some right wing conspiracy to the rights are us crowd.

Ozark, in answer to your question, apparently not; and if the commentary posted here is any indication, folks would rather blame-lay than take time to get real facts. Looks like a lot of folks prefer ertainment fodder.

I can't believe U.S. News believes anything the Bush Administration says! What did you expect?

  • Posted By: Ozark @ 02/22/2008 7:13:22 PM

We have a three tiered regulatory structured Constitution of the United States of America. We are a nation of checks and balances.

The executive branch, symbolized by the office of the president of the United States, enforces the law. The legislative branch, symbolized by the U.S. Congress, makes the laws. And the judicial branch, symbolized by the Supreme Court, interprets these laws and decides whether they are compatible with the Constitution.

I learned this in 1974. Is the Constitution of the United States of America still a subject in classrooms?

BOO! ...... Ha Ha Ha.... Works every time!..... Silly Democrats...

  • Posted By: JS99 @ 02/22/2008 7:11:52 PM

This is ludicrous. Bush is being a nice guy and asking the telecoms to help? BS. If he wants to he can get a warrant (or not!) and get whatever the F he wants. He's done it for 7 years, so why would Bush start asking now?

  • Posted By: zolijen @ 02/22/2008 7:05:59 PM

Give up your civil liberties or the terrorists will get you! In related news, the Easter Bunny has been put on the watch list for possible terrorist activity for planning to hide egg shaped objects around America this spring.

I feel bad for the people that fall for these scare tactics.
