    I've got nothing to hide either, but that doesn't mean that I want some government yahoo nosing around on a whim. Desiring and expecting personal privacy is not surreptitious behavior and does not equate to having something to hide.

    Well, unless you're a democratic government. Refusing to discuss the program with the elected representatives, refusing any attempts at oversight, ignoring established procedures and laws, and attempting to retroactively legalize activities are behaviors of a group of people with either something to hide or a complete contempt for the rule of law

    paulcjeff, are you saying that Thousands of Americans have died (and many more to come) and Tens of Thousands have been crippled due to the need to protect Israel and the fact that Hussein tried to but FAILED to assassinate President George H.W. Bush? This does not seem a very strong argument for going to war and destroying the US creditability around the world.
    We went into this war to protect Israel and to gain control of oil in the Mid-East.. Sad state this country has been through the last 7 yrs. Since we have been bouged down in Iraq the true terrorists have had a free ride in Pakistan due to Bush mishandling of events since 9/11.

      I'm not even sure what you are saying, but if "none have ever recovered", once again, I ask, why did we have inspections from 1991-2003? Surely, we should have been able, in 12 years, to determine there weren't any WMDs. And why were we being told that the inspections were working until the invasion? Surely, you can't have forgotten what was said a mere 5 years ago!

    I truly belive as most Americans, The war is most likey a farse .It is so obvious who ever wrote the the previous comments were to paronoid to young to yuppy. Wake up people! Even if the war on terror is a farse. We have for shorly pissed em off over there in the middle east now. I dislike Bush like most and my Democratic choices are a bit vague.....slim pickens.....This election too and this time around in 08. But this Spy: network will be a needed and should not be allowed to just collapse because of some lack of funding or payoff or some BS chages. It is for the good of the American Folks, and as the old saying goes if your not doing anything wrong then do not worry.
    I do not think the US care about you weird e-mails or coversations or chats or the TV programs you are watching over the net. The counrty just wants to know if your going to blow up some Post office through some profiling software.
    Yeah for shure mistakes will be made that happens with all new companies and new technologies and so forth.
    As they say.... S$%'".... happens. So if your right or left does not matter just do not do anything wrong. Pay taxes go vote and start working togather and get our Buts ingear. It is time for Americans to start to work togather no matter who you are what color you are If you hold an American Social and a Passport just work togather let by gones be bye gones and and lets start giving China a run for the money. econmic rescue Money makes all problems go away well most 99.9%

      This is the exact same thing the Germans were saying when Hitler started killing the Jews and innocent people because they did NOT agree with what he was doing.

      We have laws in this country that say a person is innocent until proven guilty not guilty until proven innocent as GWB and his minions want everyone to believe.

      Those who give up freedom for safety deserve neither and will lose both!

      They have intimidated you to the point that you're afraid of your own shadow. How pitiful are you willing to give up what millions of brave men fought for and died for. I really potty you for how scared the fear mongers have you. They have you so scared that what millions of men have fought for mean absolutely nothing to you, the right to be secure in person and possessions and yes that includes communications.

      FISA was created for a reason and that reason was to protect the citizens of the US which you so freely want to give away. Please seek medical help so that you can learn to live with the fears that GWB and his minions have instilled in you!

    So why doesn't our government just work with in the law to do these wiretaps. they can wire tap for two weeks with out the appropriate approval from FISA . While these two weeks are going on they get the appropriate approval.

      Because working within the FISA court system and having to obey a law, or meet a minimal standard of proof could prevent the very abuses that caused Congress to enact FISA after Dick Nixon and his gang. The common thread is the pursuit of unbridled, unchecked power to act in any way they choose, without recourse. FISA works. This is about rule of law, not left v right. Of course, to those at the fringe, it makes a great political hammer to attack the opposition with, and trash basic freedoms at the same time.

    I believe their claims as much as them denying that they didn't know about the immanent attack on the US(9/11). This constant fear mongering is just not cutting it any more and they know it. So now there plan is to try and show that the telecoms will not cooperate if they don't receive immunity for spying on the people of the US.

    The government only needs to use a letter as the FBI has been doing when they were caught abusing the system which is still in place, that has not changed.

    This is all about not having to get a warrant in the 72 hour period required by law nothing more nothing less. It's about accountability that this administration has been trying to avoid since day one. They don't want to have to prove anything and everyone is guilty until proven innocent in their minds.

    Well it just doesn't work that way in the US everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

    Hopefully our nation can survive this dictatorship until the end of the year.

    I find it pitiful to say the least that so many are willing to give up what so many have fought and died for on the words of a habitual liar that refuses to be accountable for anything and everything that he has done.

    In GWB's 7 years and 2 month I have never heard him admit to his failings or stand up for his accountability to all of the laws he has broken like a drunken sailer.

    One has to wonder what all of those that have died to protect our constitution and freedoms would have to say about all of those that wish to give those freedoms and the constitution away to some habitual liar on his word that things will not work without breaking the law!

    The Bush administration has forfeited all claims to credibility with it's lies and fabrications. They have long ago given up any semblance of honor and truthfulness.Fabrications and distortions of the truth are only political tactics to this administration which has proven it self morally bankrupt time after time.I would say shame on them if I thought they still had the capacity to feel Shame.

In case you forgot, it was about leftists, liberals, socialists and communists trying to take away our freedoms, like mandating government health insurance, mandatory government schooling, anti-smoking laws (to protect us from ourselves, because we???re too stupid) on private property, mandatory helmet laws (to protect us from ourselves, because we???re too stupid), mandatory seatbelt laws (to protect us from ourselves, because we???re too stupid), mandatory retirement plans, aka Social(ist) Security and Medicare (to protect us from ourselves, because we???re too stupid) (and of course, we can???t be allowed to invest our own Social(ist) Security money, because we???re too stupid), mandatory heterosexuality laws . . . Oops, we haven???t done that yet. But, just wait, the liberals and the Dummynazis will. Maybe, they can even call for videocameras in everyone???s bedroom to make sure we???re not engaging in ???unsafe??? sex and therefore, driving up our healthcare costs (again, to protect us from ourselves).

    I've got nothing to hide. They can and probably have tapped my phone. They aren't interested in my personal conversation. They aren't even interested in whether I've commited a non violent crime. They are just looking for the big things and as far as I'm concerned, they are welcome to my phone line.
