I think Hillary 2012 is a crock, do you think she'll get an easier ride from pundits. That in 4 years misogyny will disappear. Do you think she'll ever be allowed to defend herself withouy being called shrill. The political landscape may change in terms of faces, but will the environment really shift? Will Maureen Dowd and others acknowledge that misogyny shouldn't be acceptable in political discourse, let alone aided and abbetted.

I like Hillary, disappointed she's been so villified, but if she is truly divisive, will say and do anything, (or all the other names she's been called) or if Americans are suffering from Clinton fatigue, do you think Clinton should run for re-election in the Senate?

My advice, if you don't win Ohio/Texas, retire, enjoy your life, you've earned it, I'm not sure America has earned more years of your service.

As for grace and class, and for that matter change, forget Hillary for a moment, will it ever apply to the media?

    Mr, Jonathan Alter,
It looks like that you are the one who should get out. If you want to stay shut up and watch. No body needs your BS.

Comment: Why should Hillary quit, Mr. Alter? Quit and make self-serving, biased folks in the media like youself get more sadistic pleasures about derailing a genuinely-deserving candidates Presidential hopes. For Christ's sake, don't give us this sort of lousy BS anymore!

By the way, there is nothing graceful about slimy politics that much of media and Obama's campaign have been serving us. The most graceful thing that could and should happen (I pray to God) is for Hillary to prevail in spite of the doom-sayers and disgraceful circumstances. Go Hillary.....there definitely is hope!!

The media has run this campaign all the way. They are so biased it's pathetic. They treat Obama like the second coming of Christ and act like he can do no wrong in their eyes. They scrutinize Hillary's every step and do nothing but berate her. I feel sorry for those so mezmerized by Obama's speeches that they failed to listen and only heard what they wanted to hear. The people at his rallies look at him with starry eyes like a bunch of teenage girls swooning over a young rock star. Hope the voters wake up before it's too late and see him for what he is.....a slick talking car salesman making a bunch of promises he will never keep. His "details" on how to pay for all of his promises does not even come close to the actual tab.
I'm a lifelong Democrat, but I will not vote for Obama. If Hillary does not get the nomination, I will gag on my vote for John McCain. Hillary is the only one with a feasible way to pay for health care, and has not made a bunch of hollow unfunded promises.
Shame on you Alter! How dare you, a simpleton writer, think you have the right to tell a presidential candidate when to quit!
Go Hillary! I'm with you all the way!

They said the words Martin Luther King, Ghandi and Nelson Mandela was rhetoric also...think bout it...the change that happened from those words they spoke....make you want to go get some education don't it. A mind...terrible thing to waste...please stop wasting it! God Bless you.

      • Posted By: Wa Dem @ 02/25/2008 11:51:03 PM

Do you mean to compare Obama to MLK, and Ghandi, really? What actions (which speak louder then words) warrant this comparison? His voting record? Present just means I'm here, not that I have an opinion or am willing to take a stand. His performance as Senator for Illinois? From what I hear lots of talk and little positive result. I agree that words can be powerful but without action and commitment they are nothing more then "just words"

    • Posted By: Gemstone @ 02/25/2008 11:05:31 PM

Why gag and vote or McCain when you have the right to a write in vote. Hillary for President and John for Vice President!

  • Posted By: rpritchard27 @ 02/25/2008 11:50:58 PM

What ever happened to honoring the process? After all, we are a nation of laws, and therefore, procedure. Why don't we see the same editorial comments about Mike Huckabee. Is it because Hillary Clinton still has a chance to win the nomination and you don't like it? This is still a horse race AND it is offensive to those of us who vote for you to use your influence to sway our votes.

Jonathan Alter is so full of himself. Is he by any chance friends with Oprah! She's really buying America for Obama isn't she! So, get real Mr. Alter! Now why don't you quit or even better write something that makes sense!

    Hillary Should Get Out Now

GOOD Article. Thank you Jonathan Alter for having the guts to speak the truth. I read your article a couple of times and I caught your interview this evening with Dan Abrams. I understand your point that Senator Clinton
might want to step aside now or perhaps in the very near future in an effort to gracefully save face and to unite the democratic party. oh and by the way, don't worry about the critics, they won't stop reading NEWSWEEK and so what if they do.
One thing is for certain I will continue reading your fine articles and have ordered a subscription of NEWSWEEK for my parents.

Mr. Alter: I wish Dan Abrams had stopped talking long enough to listen to what you had to say. Why did he invite you on the show? He could have blasted you without having you there while he ranted. Think you should stick to appearances on Countdown. While the whole exchange annoyed me, at least I was motivated to find your article. You are not alone in your opinion. See: http://aptremarks.com/blog/archives/16/ Watching Hillary devolve publically is sad to watch. Hope she takes your advice.

Hillary should not give up! She needs to stay in (1) in order to get many of her planks into the platform at the convention and (2) if necessary, swallow her pride and accept the VP spot on the ticket. It would be an unbeatable ticket!

Hilary Clinton is grabbing at straws. The whole campaign is weak. When you cry on TV, politics is not where you belong. Don???t play the "I'm a woman" card: politics don't play that game. She's attacking her opponent by MOCKING him. You know I've heard that was a pretty successful way to intimidate your enemy, in maybe 2nd grade, but a grown woman? American politics for the most part are really screwed up right now; this is what needs to change:

    1. Quit the political back stabbing and the stupid tabloid stories, we are out of high school now, let's act like it, hmm? Cut the crap, it's really stupid & it's not helping anything right now.2. Do what is best for America. Duh3.Fix the economy & get away from dependency on imports 4. Research hydrogen fuel. You know where you can find hydrogen? Water. Guess what 70% of earth is covered with? 5. Figure out what's going on with IRAQ & the so-called war on terrorism? Is it a war on terrorism or a war on Iraq? There is no way to get rid of terrorism; it's basically impossible unless you kill every one which ironically makes you a terrorist.6. Do something about health care. Make it affordable. The poor guy and the rich guy are both Americans 7. Immigration. Unless you have ancestors that walked the trail of tears or something, you are not from here. Is this not the land of opportunity? Think about it. But in retrospect, if you are in the US learn English. There is no reason that we should have to have a translator for a debate. That???s just wrong. 8. What is going on in LA? There are people in New Orleans living in crappy trailers with toxic chemicals in them. Don't you watch the news? They are still living like that. 9. Leave your religion out of it. Quit playing that card. Vote for things based on your values which you think are vital issues, don't vote for someone just because they read the same book as you, they can stab you in the back whenever they want 10. There is not a Black vote, or a Latino vote, or a dumb white guy vote or a radical feminist / hippie vote, there is the AMERICAN vote. 11. If you served in the military, thank you. But, don't remind us every 5 minutes. What does that have to do with health care? 12. Don't steal slogans. Change ... okay? Change what? 13. Say what you mean. Just say it. 14. When you are going to take a side on something, stay there. Don't say you support gay marriage and then sign a bill saying that you think it should be illegal15. Same sex marriage. That's the Big Man upstairs??? job. 16. TELL THE TRUTH. Otherwise you are a liar. 17.Like I said about the Middle East, if we are doing something good there, great. If not, bring the troops home. 18.Should you be elected, note that the 2nd term in office doesn't really work out too well. 19 Believe there is still some good in this world. Not everything sucks...yet 20. Believe America can change. Given there might be a few minor riots or something of that nature... but they say change is good

How dare is that author suggesting such a stupid thing? Everyone in America now is all about Obama, please get a life with your stupid article. No, one can say anything about Obama because baby boy will get his feelings hurt or cry racial remarks. Give me a break people, on 100 occasions Obama voted present on the senate floor instead of voted YES or NO. The guy wanted to play good guy since he never voted for or against anything. What has Obama have done? He was a community leader SOOOOO.

I COMPLETELY AGREE. BUT IT'S ONLY JUST BEGUN AND THE TRUE LIBERALS MUST BE PREPARED TO STARE IGNORANCE IN THE FACE BECAUSE AS I SAID EARLIER, IT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING-

I am just grateful that there are a ton of other people who are seeing what I'm seeing that the media has anointed Obama the president already. The negative stories about McCain have already started hitting -- and I mean that story implying he had an affair with a lobbyist - what a freakin' fabricated cheap shot was that? And what MONEY PEOPLE were behind that piece of garbage.

Somebody who has power in the MEDIA is using that power now to pick the next president of the United States.

What scares me to death is that the money people behind this whole situation aren't Americans -- but, rather, money people of other nations who want to see us floundering under weak leadership so they can destroy us -- economically, politically and socially.

I will NOT stay here if Obama is president. I am too afraid of what will happen to this country when he gets elected and the MONEY PEOPLE who got him elected start calling him to repay his debt to them for getting him elected.

If you honestly can tell me that Obama is some secret undercover terrorist who is plotting to take down the United States, then you are the very "least intelligent, most arrogant and MORONIC person in the world" that you were talking about Obamamama1. The United States has some of the highest undercover security in the world. There is no way in hell that the secret service or the FBI would allow someone like that to command the highest political position in the "Free World". Hillary Clinton is nothing but power hungry, and everybody knows it. How many more times does she need to throw her thirst for power into the faces of her supporters and anti-supporters in order for people to get the picture. If Hillary wins the Dem. nomination, I'm voting Republican, and if she wins the presidency, I'm moving out of this country, because it will slip into a time period worse than ever seen in American history.

I will donate and campaign until Hillary exits the race. The country is swirling around the drain and all the hope and change in the world will not pull us from the edge of disaster. It appears that the media and has decided that Obama will be the DEM nominee, so come November I will hold my nose, vote McCain and hopefully help save our country from this cult of delusion. Go ahead Obamaholics: that's your cue to hysterically scream that I am a racist.
