I enjoy reading the pros and cons of why voters support Obama or Clinton. The more I read, the more I understand why Obama attracts educated voters. As a current doctorate student, I have been taught to think critically and to evaluate each candidate on his or her own merits, whether that candidate is Obama, Clinton, or McCain. It is truly disheartening to read comments based on passion and not rational thinking. When voters from one side of the aisle or the other say they will vote for the candidate of the opposite party if their preferred candidate is not nominated, these voters not only have abandoned the values each party stands for, but they have also abandoned their own beliefs. Candidates should be decided on what each of us believes will be the best for our country not out of anger or passion or frustration because our candidate did not make it into the end zone.
I am an Independent voter. The first election I was able to take part in was when John F. Kennedy became president. No nominee excited me more then Kennedy did; no nominee has excited me since until Obama came on the scene. It is not my aim to discredit Clinton or McCain; both candidates have their positive and negative attributes that they would contribute to their presidencies. However, I believe that a strong case can be made for Obama.
This country has had presidents with ???experience??? before. NAFTA came in under Bill Clinton and resulted in the loss of millions of jobs for Americans; the second election of Bush brought about more erosion of our personal freedoms and ???fair??? trade agreements that made me afraid to send out perfectly innocent emails and letters and compounded job losses even further. ???Experience??? has brought us trillions of dollars of debt that my great-great-great grandchildren will be paying for.
Obama may not offer ???experience,??? but in my ride through political journeys since the Kennedy era, experience has brought this country lethargic leadership, plunged us into a war that has taken away the futures of thousands of bright, educated young people, marred our image around the world, and slowly destroyed our educational and infrastructural systems. Currently, there is no candidate on the political front that can fix these monumental problems with the sweep of a magical wand, but Obama gives us one thing that the other candidates do not: hope.
I have witnessed the passing of the presidency from ???same old, same old,??? to ???same old, same old??? for far too many decades. What our country desperately needs is a leader who can bring our country new hope, vision, inspiration, diplomacy, dignity, intelligence, and strong leadership that can unite us all under one umbrella. I believe Obama posses these qualities.
Enter Your CommentYour comments is at the heart of where we are in this - there are those who appreciate oratory - the Kennedys' are exactly that, both John and Ted Kennedy are great orators. But oratory by itself is not the answer. You have absolutely no idea of what an Obama presidency would be like - this mumbo jumbo of "bring us together", clear vision, etc. is very dangerous. Why do you not want specifics? Why are you willing to accept so much on "faith". You are not accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior - you are giving this man power. You are old enough to know better. How disappointing that you are a doctoral candidate and you cannot see any further than this. Unfortunately, education is NOT always the answer to everything.
I believe it was George Will that said it about a month ago, that IFthe Democrats did not screw up ( he added and we all know if there is a party that can do it they are the party ) that they will take back the White House. He was not referring to a Clinton White House with that remark.
Hilary sit down shut up and watch the Democrats take back the White House!
It realy is time for
In response to post by HolyRoller. You sound like a fear-mongering racist. Get over your hatred, you'll live a better life. As for the article- I think Hillary staffers want to keep getting paid as long as possible, so they want to drag this out. They already know that the Hillary campaign is a goner. They don't really care about her reputation- they already killed it. Hillary can go back to working hard in the Senate making solutions. That's a good place for her. If she thought staying married to Bill would make her prez someday, she was wrong. No wonder she is so bitter. She could have dumped him a long time ago and married someone faithful to her.
Even if she stayed in the race neither have enough delegates to win. Obamma, pun intended, is hoping the super delegates on her side will desert her. Now ehen the press who adores him starts to dig they will find he once in those terrorist schools. his mother married twice to militant black muslims, and Obamma is mostly a militant muslim parading as a Christian.
some advice...knowledge is power. If only you knew how utterly stupid and wrong that comment was. OOps! I suppose you do.
I want a professional looking, well educated, well spoken, mild mannered, level headed and understanding person to run this country....sure-its a tall order, BUT, Hillary is NOT what we need now, someone more like Dianne Fienstein (D-CA) would be oh so much better....Mrs Clinton cant even dress right, can you see her hostinga State Dinner in her famous pant suits? Can you see her yelling out loud so she is the center of attention and is noticed? Can you see Bill as First Man? This is something right now that we as U S citizens just cant afford to have, we need to rethink the economy and education as well as all the international (can you say IRAQ?) issues that need the new Presidents attention-as well as the new Cabinet. I ask you, who is qualified? We have the "Final Four"...I say for steady, secure leadership, it is McCain, for favored reduction of taxes, Huckabee, for clean new leadership, Obama, and for more years of Clintonism, Hillary. I dont know who the h*** to vote for honestly, but I do know, HRC is not the way to go!
If Hillary loses the nomination, I will have to vote Republican for the first time in my life. Barack Obama does not have the experience to manage a candy store. For all those people swept up in the Obama histeria ask yourself the following question: If General Motors was in need of a new CEO, would they hire someone with a documented history of experience or would they look for a new college graduate with little to no experience, but who offered "hope". The Untied States needs a leader that can offer sound solutions, not pretty talk and lots of hope. Mc Cain and Clinton are the only two candidates that have the knowledge and experience to lead this country forward. All Obama can do is promise he will try and offer us "hope". Well hope is not a commodity that puts food on the table and money in your pocket. Oh yeah, by only offering "hope" he can't fail either, because he didn't say what or how he would accomplish anything.
IF GM had a competent CEO we would all be able to afford an environmentally sound motor
vehicle and not be reliant upon foteign oil. Unfortunately engineer Bob probably works in the auto
industry and they may lobby for him but not me. Yes We Can and We are $10.00 at a time WE will
buy back America for the oil and automobile industies. I take the bus.
Stop it..Hillary has 20+ years as a FIRST LADY, all of her HEALTHCARE REFORM bills have FAILED to pass..she has only managed to pass 2 1/2 bills per year, compared to Obama's 4 per year!
Hillary had to take the bar 2X, Obama passed the 1st time, plus was the PRESIDENT of the HARVARD LAW REVIEW!
Hillary has backstabbed many of her business partners, so if we want another CROOK in OFFICE, then she would fit that bill...
However we want OBAMA in office, so she got to GO!
Waste your vote on bomb, bomb, bomb IRAN (MCCAIN) if you want to...his wife is going to SNORT up your TAX DOLLARS!
I ended my subscription this morning. I had been a subscriber for over 10 years, but this kind of ridiculous sexist piece made me sick. Let the people vote. You assume Hillary's supporters are going to close ranks around Obama IF he wins the nomination, but I believe that there are many Republicans (myself and wife included) that will never vote for Obama. END YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS and send Newsweek a message.
Even though I don't like Hillary and I'm not a democrat by any means, I still think she should remain in the race. I like to watch the debates and learn a little more about each candidates views on the issues.
CSM2547-I'm a young person who certainly has lost faith in the government since Bush took office again in 04. But I don't like big government which is why I'm not a democrat. All they want to do is increase government size and spending and make a Nanny state. Of course, I don't like big corporations being subsidized either which is why I'm not a republican. They are basically the same thing except they're for the police state. So, that's why I decided to screw them both and follow libertarian ideals.

She should not stop now. The media is finally and faintly starting to really examine who Barack Obama is and we are finding out little. The reason he is so high and mighty is he really has nothing to look back on. He has been running for the Presidency since his first year of office. This isn't American Idol, folks. I heard tonight that people "want a clean slate". Of course it is clean-and empty. My Mayor in small town Minnesota has more experience than Senator Obama.
Well why ain't he running if he's that darn smart? Did you read that before you sent it? Sound ignorant huh?
I think your an idiot like the rest of the media. You all know the truth about Obama but, none of you have the guts to print it. That's why you never ask him the hard questions. Even the last debate he deferred to Hillary and then just added to what she said. He's done that all along. Then we have other idiots like the one that said Bush Jr. inherited the country in shambles. Obviously they were comatose for yeaars because he not only had balanced the budget after Bush Sr. but had a surplus. Our economy wasn't suffering like it is now either..When the truth comes out on Obama he'll be delivering his speech relinquishing his campaign.
You need to hit REPLAY, CLINTON was the one using ALL of OBAMA's plans and changing them. She was writing more her behind OFF, because OBAMA told her some things that she DID NOT EVEN KNOW.
The sad part is that the CLINTONS have had the media in their back pocket for DECADES and NOW that they are not getting the AIR TIME they THINK they deserve, they cry..and their supporters cry more!
First, Obama is muslim..disproved..Obama is BLACK..has a white mother..Not experienced (he has managed to get 12 bills passed in his 3 years in the senate, that is 4 bills per year, compared to Hill's 2 1/2 per year in 20 years!
His church affiliation was an issue..when AMERICA has completely forgot that the CATHOLIC CHURCH has molested more white male children than all child molesters locked up in the STATE PEN!
She championed NAFTA, she was the POSTER CHILD for NAFTA and now she states, she was NOT PRESIDENT, so she had nothing to do with it!
The media has nothing to do with OBAMA winning, the PEOPLE are listening to OBAMA and he has created a MOVEMENT that has united EVERYONE, from all races, all socio-economic backgrounds..
But hey, the former PRESIDENT of the HARVARD REVIEW should not be capable of doing this, or passing the BAR on his first try, unlike MRS. CLINTON who had to try 2x's before she passed!
SHUT UP hillary cry babies and get on the OBAMA TRAIN..it CANNOT & WILLNOT be stopped.
Texas and Ohio, will show you!
Another proud example of the hope and peace that Barak Obama and his followers will bring to the country! Listen to yourself, do you even listen to him? He is certainly stirring up enough vitriol in this foolower! I wonder if any of his minions are reading the blogs and seeing the poison coming from the fingers of his loyal believers?
Reaaly have to agree he hass been given a pass. Whatever is the real truth is needs to come out before november. We don't need a muslim wacko in the White house. plenty of you liberals would say we have had a Christian wacko for the last 8 years. Why would he be wanting to get all chummy with Syria(terrorist nation), and all the other ones too! Is he that gullible or are we?
Jonathan Alter thinks the primary has only one purpose: too choose a president candidate. How silly! Without primary, how do we know what issues this country needs to address? If Newsweek follows Jonathan Alter's suggestion, Newsweek should stop publishing NOW, because Time magazine always has more readership.
Back to "pasbair" - Sorry, I disagree. We need only go so far back as Bill Clinton to find one of the biggest liars in our White House. Funny, I'm a Democrat, but I don't agree with only telling the "dirt" on the Republicans. Let's clean our own house before we point fingers at our adversaries. There are lies and deception throughout our political system/government, but only those the media feels like exposing come to light. If you don't believe that, you're more naive than most.
Paladin0110,
You have a lot of hatred in your heart and it's a shame. I beleive you came up with this nice conclusion after carefully deliberating. Smart guy. Maybe you should run for the Presidency.
I woke up and immediately stopped my Newsweek subscription. I've been a subscriber for over 10 years, but this kind of ridiculous bias and sexism needs to stop. LET PEOPLE VOTE! The media needs to respect the voters and Hillary's many supporters. Women this is just another example of rampant sexism in the media.
Hey, what's wrong w/Mr. Bojangles? I bet Sammy would have voted for Clinton!
I am not going to vote McCain! I am not going to vote Obama! I am not going to vote Nadar! Why is because none are the best or right match for what we need as America in 2008 I will ONLY vote for Hillary Clinton! If she does not win the Democratic Party nomination I will take my rights as and American and do a write in vote for Hillary Clinton for President and John Edwards for Vice President.! THE MEDIA IS NOT GOING TO ELECT MY PRESIDENT FOR ME!
