Every time I hear Jonathan Alter's name mentioned, I remember the night of the 2000 elections, when he told Tim Russert that Bush should concede the election. He thought Bush would lose. Alter...Always wrong. Newsweek deserves better.
Are you kidding me - There are a thousand reasons why your article is absurd! You are actually saying that she should just drop out 'nicely' - Sorry but that is the same sexist crap that girls are told all of the time. You need to back down or people won't think you are 'nice'. I want a president who is a strong fighter for me and for the ideals of our country. Someone who has the experience and the compassion to be angry when they see injustices . It is HARD for her to put herself out there and I am honored to have voted for her and hope that my Michigan vote WILL count! As you see - I am a member of party and an American and I should not be denied my voice and at the same Hillary should be supported in her quest to make history!
I'm with you. Does this guy think it would be better to be a "quitter" than to lose a hard fought race?? Hasn't he ever heard a "quitter never wins, and a winner never quits"?
Driley, why does Hillary think that she has to make derogatory comments about other candidates? She needs to cut the negative crap and boasting that being First Lady of Arkansas and the USA make her EXPERIENCED. For an experienced politician, she has certain made a mess of her campaign. She only has herself to blame. Dirty politics which has worked for her and Slick Willy in the past aren't going to work for her now. I definitely DON'T want that womanizer in the White House as First Husband or whatever his title would be playing with the staff.
To live and fight another day is the better part of Valor
Hillary is best woman, I have seen her old photos on http://www.blackgirlsconnect.com/. I hope more persons support her in this discussion.
The level of this discussion, the horrendous grammar, and the inability of so many to compose a coherent sentence all seem to prove what I just read: the average American reads, writes, and speaks on a fifth grade level. Disgraceful. Looks like the real issue for all campaigns should be education!

I do hope that they are wrong about HIllary! On the other hand, Obama can for sure beat McCain. The real question is...Is this country ready for this type of change? I sure hope so!
The only reason Hillary is with Bill is for her candidacy. Hilliary will dump Willie as soon as she loses the primary and marry Janet Reno.
You sound like a Bush Backslapper probably still upset that Bill Clinton beat his father. Get real and open your mind to the fact that we have serious problems in this country. Of all the candidates Hillary is the person most qualified to lead us out of this mess Bush created.
Mr. Alter,
Seeing all the comments regarding your article just have one question; When will you be resigning with class and dignity?

There's an even better reason for Hillary to get out of the race: she is less--perhaps much less--electable in a race against John McCain.
Example: the LA Times story ( www.latimes.com/.../la-na-gopobama25feb25,0,4658669.story ) this week on Republicans for Obama. In it, one of Obama's GOP campaign workers said that, as strongly as he feels that a change of political direction is needed, he'd nevertheless vote for McCain over Clinton if she were to become the nominee.
What struck me about the remark was the frequency with which I've heard it myself: nearly all the Republicans and independents I know are disgusted with Bush and set to vote for a Democrat--but not if that Democrat is Hillary. (A vehement "I CAN'T STAND HER" usually follows this declaration.)
Now, this probably only proves how effectively conservatives have demonized the woman over the past decade and a half. Still, when people are punching their ballot cards in November, the whys will not be important.
This country CANNOT survive another 4-8 years of conservatives' self-serving ideological nonsense. A Democratic victory in November is essential, and having Hillary as our candidate may well put that outcome critically at risk. Vote Obama.
You my want to rethink using the LA Times for reasons to support Sen. Obama as they endorsed him and Hillary kicked Obama's ass in California. This is just another example of Media bias towards Obama. National Polls show Hillary still ahead of Obama, which the media time and time again fails to mention in the same light as Obama's primary victories. If she's ahead nationally and polls show that Obama would beat Mccain, doesn't it make sense that Hillary would beat Mccain to? Keep doing what the Republicans want us all to do, support Obama. That's the best way they can be assured of victory in November, for when it comes to the national election, the Republican evil machine will crush Obama.
Mr. Alter has been part of the lynch mob that have literally ran Ms. Clinton out of town. Granted Barack can make a pretty speech, but make no mistake, it is the male dominated press that has made Obama "big man on campus" The tone of this affair is all too similar. A few weeks ago, I said I would vote for whoever won the nomination. But Obama's tactics, his apparent lack of respect for a woman that has fought for change her entire life and the heavy handiness of the press has me thinking otherwise. What is so fresh and new about Obama? By casting his opponent in a negative light and misrepresenting her struggle to bring about change, he is using tactics as old as politics and worthy of Trent Lott, Newt Gingrich, Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Bringing folks together? He is alienating half of the Democratic party. I don't call that change.
My wife and I accuse Jonathan Alter of listening in our dinner conversation of 4 or 5 nights ago. In 50 years of marriage, we have never discussed politics as much as in the past few months. But we both came out exactly where Mr. Alter did re Hillary......including his conclusion that her pride and stubborness will not allow her take this strategically wise decision....., and we both believe she is the most intelligent candidate running in either party! Emotion and pride will be her downfall....now, isn't that interesting. Fore-shadow, fore-shadow!
Maybe you should consider not discusiing politics for another 50 years and instead vacationing with Mr. Alter as a suitable replacement to this activity.
If Hillary goes, we're going, too. Won't vote for McCain but won't vote for Obama either. He's not qualified, he's too young, too inexperienced. He won't carry the South, men, seniors, etc. He can't and won't win against McCain. He'll get thrashed.
Spiting one's self....this is NOT the time to throw a tantrum.
Didn't sound like a tantrum to me ... sounded like someone using their thinking powers and giving good reason for their decision.
Dick Morris knows the family pretty well and he even said you don't want her in there running the FBI or CIA. There are some people that are always gong to love her no matter what she does ( my sister in law) but I am personally sad Edwards dropped out. The way she managed her campaign funds, do you want her running the countries. The people she picked for her campaign, do you really want her picking cabinet positions and supreme court justices? I don't. I don't see good choices here, and you can't blame this on Bill.

I am a supporter of The Honorable Hillary Roadam Clinton. She has to stay in and fight for her votes in Ohio and Texas then, We can count her out if she loose her ground. However, Senator Obama can not go to the Nomination Process if he does not have 2025 in My personal opinion. I do not vote for Senator Clinton as a Woman candidate. I vote for her as my Common Sense tells me, She is the MOSAT qualify candidate that we have. Ryladie99
HONORABLE and CL.IT.ON are two words that do not go together - you are as delusional as any other feminist who think CL.IT.ON has the balls to be President..!
That is the most rediculous, sexest comment. Read a book and get some facts. Any one with common sense can tell the only reason you are not a Hillary supporter is because she's a woman. Men are so threatend and so are the women who think only a man can lead a country. They have done a bang of job so far.
AND she's not a mohammedess. Nuff for me.

Who was it that defined neurosis as repeating the same mistake again and again, and expecting a better outcome each time? That is really what the Clinton campaign is doing in its post-Chesapeake primary strategy. Now Hillary defines Obama as the candidate who makes speeches, while she is the one who provides answers and solutions.
Why is Hillary embracing this new line? Its not that she has any great record of solutions or answers of which to boast, but rather that she wants to highlight Obama's lack of a legislative record. Once again, she and her campaign geniuses are making the same mistake they made when they decided to use the experience as their defining difference with Obama. Its not that she had much, but they sensed an opportunity to highlight that he had even less.
Of course experience not only didn't work. It backfired massively. By co-opting the experience tag, Hillary bought into the status quo and left Obama to be the agent of change. A candidacy that could have excited tens of millions of women, the first serious prospect of a female president, became merely a boring part of the status quo, shorn of its novelty.
Hillary's claim to be the solution-person won't work either for the same simple reason: She hasn't passed any...she hasn't walked the walk so now she cannot talk the talk.
As a first lady, Hillary's sole important legislative involvement came during the first two years of her husband's presidency when she sought to pass her ill-conceived health care reform, an effort that failed so miserably that it cost her party control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. Between 1995 to 1997, she was largely absent from the White House, traveling the world, promoting her best selling book and helping to raise funds. She never attended strategy meetings and her only intervention in the singular legislative achievements of Bill's administration welfare reform and the balanced budget deal was privately to urge a veto of the former and to oppose the latter because it provided for a cut in the capital gains tax. Hillary returned to the White House in 1998 to oversee the defense to the Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment attempt, but the Clinton administration essentially folded its legislative efforts during those years and hung on for dear life. No portfolio of accomplishments there...
Her only actual legislation included one bill to increase nurse recruitment, another to aid respite time for Alzheimer's care givers and another to expand veteran's health benefits, a paltry output for six years service.
In her second term, she has spent full-time campaigning for president and has the worst attendance record of the three senators now still in the presidential race.

Excuse me, do you mind if we go ahead and vote down here in Texas? I'd sorta like the opportunity to cast my vote for Hillary and her healthcare plan and her experience and brains. Has the mindless mob decided the rest of us don't even get a say in this thing? Is that the Obama bandwagon's "thinking" now? Reminds me of the Borg on StarTrek, and win, lose, or draw, I don't think I'll join. As long as I still have a right to vote, I'll exercise it, and I'll do my own thinking, if you don't mind. And before you go disenfranchising the Hillary supporters down here in Texas, you Obamites might remember that we still have the right to vote in November and we've retained our brains.
Tonight's the night for Hillary. It's either kill or be killed.

I think you are so wrong. You are a man. You new people don't know crap. Just because she is a woman, you have to dog her. I have never vote in my life. I am 55 years old, and this is my 1st time voteing. I am not rich and I am not poor. I am Native American and you people have treated us with no respect. I think you as a man should mine your business and leave Hillary alone. As a woman, I feel you men are afraid a woman in the white house , could do a better job.
Thank you

The only thing to fear more than Hillary Clinton are the people who support her. Obviously, you have not educated yourself as to the real Hillary Clinton. You should take time to learn just what a mean *** Hillary Clinton is. If any of us had done the things she has done, we would be in prison. There are books that will inform you of the real lying, cheating, criminal dealings of Hillary Clinton. Yeah! We sure want her.
Better the devil you know than the one you don't.
You make a good point.
How is choosing the future President of my country not my business? And because I am a man, do you mean to implyy that I am not permitted to have an opinion or a vote as to who that person might be? I live in an area where my interaction with Native Americans is zero, so I have not disrespected you. Why don't you try to put together a cogent thought?
This comment is for Jonathan Alter. Are you him? I don't care who you vote for president? You can vote for who ever.
