Comment: One little-discussed reason for the homeless pet crisis is the common practice of landlords who either don't allow pets. For landlords who do allow pets to live with their human companions, they often charge exorbitant and nonrefundable pet fees or an rent surcharge to cover the pet's rent. Either way, this amounts to a legalized form of housing discrimination against pet parents. This practice of discrimination on the basis of pet ownership should be put to an end and outlawed so most of these pets who are being abandoned or given up to shelters can remain with their beloved humans.
