Comment: Looks like Fineman is desperate to criticize McCain for something, but doesn' really know what.
In running for president, John McCain loses his voice.

My sources HAVE assured me that HILLARy WILL WIN By MORE THAN FIVE POINTS IN TEXAS AND By DOuBLE DIGITS IN OHIO. SHE will also take Rhode ISLAND but lose Vermont by seven points. HILLARy's door to door camPaign was very successful in both states.
FOR SOME REASON THE HUSSEIN NAME HAS SCARED THE TEXAS FOLK. AND OHIO WAS ALWAyS A SURE VICTORy FOR HILLARy.

Comment: This article reflects the average excuse from reporters regarding why McCain gets a free ride.
"Those of us on the Straight Talk Express eight years ago got a breathtaking journalistic opportunity: to be inside the lively mind and heart of a leading contender for president. McCain was as joyously combative as Popeye and as earnestly confessional as Oprah. Now, in the wake of the Times story, the old bus has, in effect, been put up on cinder blocks..."
I voted for McCain in 2000. But the straight talk has been on cinder blocks for a long time. His unreflective support for the war in 2002-2003, and his insistence that it would be short. His failure to call for more troops when it became obvious they were required in 2003, but his very public accolades for Bush in 2004.
Now he runs around claiming he was a long-time critic of the way the war was waged. Pfui.
He endorses making the Bush tax cuts permanent, while also endorsing a war that, according to a Nobel laureate economist, has already indebted the US for $3 trillion. And he claims he is a fiscal conservative.
A straight talker who held those positions would make iut clear that almost every other program except the war would have to be decimated to support the war at an average cost of $2000 per capita for every US resident per year. (Try dividing $3trillion by 300 million people and 5 years --oh, yes, I forgot --reporters don't DO arithmetic.)
So feel sorry for mCCain all you want. From any dispassionate point of view, he is just another serial liar occassionally overwhelmed by remorse.
Good for him. Shame on the media.
Comment: You bet,At that time on Iraq vote Hillary voted with the majority of the people and with 77 senators who voted for it assuming that stupid Bush will not go for a preemptive war. Now majority is against the war and so does she. WHAT IS A BIG DEAL? I think majority of young people are stupid any where in the world and more in the USA. They say experience is not required. Let me tell you if we have professors in the college without any experience how good they can teach you? Same way a leader has to be stable and experienced person to lead the nation. I agree that some times experienced person makes mistakes too. But it is always better to have experienced person than in experienced when they are alike on 95% of the issues.
So many blacks are voting for Obama blindly, So when he becomes president he will be compelled to do good for them. And it may go till whites feel it is unfair. Also criminals will be flying high hoping he will not punish them. What would you do? Impeach Obama? No one thinks on the long term effects. And many politicians are just jealous of Clinton they are not looking into the interest of the USA, period.
The best solution is to have Obama as VP and Hillary as president. This way he will gain good experience and may be both will be president having Democratic ruling for next 16 years. It will be a WIN-WIN situation. The John McCain???s feet will be trembling!!!

Comment: Good, insightful article. Lobbyist get what they want because they have the money clout. Where do they get that money? From the people ... the ordinary citizen-taxpayer-voter. So the money and the votes really come from the ordinary citizen-taxpayer-voter and politicians are elected by the ordinary citizen-taxpayer-voter. But the ordinary citizen-taxpayer-voter gets the hollow shibboleth "lip-service" while only the Lobbyists get the results. What's the lesson? The ordinary citizen-taxpayer-voter needs to develop a learning curve for recognizing these relatively obvious tell-tale signs (circumstance that don't pass the smell test) and start voting for someone else.
Comment: As a long time viewer of Countdown, I agree with Marty63. I am very disappointed.
Comment: Howard I am in no way a supporter of McCain, but I think that if the press, Written & TV took an honest look at itself they would see that it is they way the press has changed as much as McCain. Clearly this election season anyone who has bothered to read or listen can tell that the press is not writing about the campaigns but are actually campaigning for a certian candidate. When we reach the point that the press is actually out there campaigning for one candidate the freedom of the press becomes void, and I truly believe that when reporters (and magazines such as newsweek) should be upfront and tell the public upfront that their candidate is Barack Obama before each article they write.
Comment: Hi Howard, please do me a favor and tell Keith O. at Countdown next time you see him that now more than ever I think he "LE ACARREA EL AGUA A MR OBAMA" and that I thought that he was a fair man, and he has used his program to discredit Mrs Clinton; next time he has the urge to bash Fox Noise for being the propaganda machine for the GOP he might just wanna take a quick look at the mirror himself.
Comment: If McCain's hands are tied, it's because McCain tied the knot himself. The reaction to McCain now by the media, is the same reaction McCain got by the Republicans when he was labeled a Maverick. As you can see there are many parts of McCain. If some think McCain is too liberal, it's OK to say so. If some think McCain is too Conservative, it's also OK to say so. You can't please everyone, especially the critics. Everything must be brought out in the open. The positive and the negative. No one is perfect. Especially McCain, Hillary, or Obama.
Comment: You Media people are all so pathetic. I am embarrassed and ashamed of everyone. I am 54 years old and have never seen anything like this. There are no good articles to read anymore and certainly not one thing to watch on TV to get news that isn't so over the top in favor of Obama that is makes you want to scream.
Let's turn on the news and watch the talking heads show the people fainting, the people applauding because Obama blew his nose, oh look lets ask the Senator why he endorsed Obama - what does he satnd for - what are his accomplishments???? Gee, I don't know - I can't name one!!!!! WAKE UP.
Comment: Give it up Fineman. This is turning into the boy who cried wolf. I always thought you were above the partisan garbage but I should have known better. Just so you know, Howard, the NYT didn't lay off those workers a month ago so they could make room to hire you, quit applying for a job with them by stroking their lost, legless story.
Fineman - Isikoff '08
Comment: A pathetic comment. No wonder Aristotle disapproved of democracy. --Too many idiots.
Comment: LATINO'S ARE Loyal VOTERS. THEy WILL SAVE HILLARy . THERE IS GOING TO BE AN uproar because of the power and influence of the LATINO VOTE. THERE IS NO DOUBT HILLARy WILL WIN TEXAS AND OHIO.
WHEN I THINK OF HILLARy I THINK OF My MOTHER. ROCK SOLID on my side no matter what. SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT IS "GOING ON" AND ALWAyS HAS My BEST INTEREST AT HEART. I IDOLIZE MICHAEL JORDON. HOWEVER I WOULD VOTE FOR My MOM OVER MICHAEL JORDON. WHy I KNOW HER. MOST AMERICANS WOULD CHOOSE THEIR MOM OVER JORDON FOR president
Comment: It's pretty simple Howard: The NYT ran a *** piece based on third hand unnamed sources and it fell flat. The only thing accomplished is you made the right more simpathetic to McCain. Something only you hacks could have accomplished. McCain 1, MSM 0. Next storie, please.
Comment: I am supporting ralph nader since he announced he was running for presidency today on meet the press the the change rhetoric of obama and the experience rhetoric of hillary are bolonie!!! Ralph Nader is the only one whoo can make change and has experiece to do it. Ralph will take young vote away from obama I have a feeling about this, and he wiull take senoirs away from hillary, he is the future and the only one who cares about working class, is this astory about Obama really true like blogerrs on internet are saying. please let me know someone
Comment: ** Man files Federal Lawsuit against Obama regarding GAY sexual act and drug use claims **
A man named Larry Sinclair posted a video to YouTube claiming to have used cocaine and engaged in a gay sexual act with Obama when Obama was a state legislator in 1999.
In the video, Sinclair claims he and Obama met on two separate occasions, that Obama used crack cocaine and that Sinclair performed an oral sexual act on Obama both evenings.
Now Obama and company are quickly trying to quiet this man, but Sinclair has filed a federal lawsuit. Sinclair filed suit against Obama and his campaign guru David Axelrod in Minnesota district court for allegedly attempting to abridge Sinclair's right to free speech, and for waging an intimidation campaign against him.
check out the video on youtube for yourself:
Both MSNBC and the New York Post have verified the authenticity of the facts... will the American public have to wait until Obama gets the nomination to finally have this become public...1st on FOX News??? it will be too late for the Democratic Party... Obama needs to be fully vetted... seems like at the age of 40 someone was getting busy in the back of a limosine. Crack and gay sex... what a mess....
Comment: NYT stole it
Comment: Same comments show up no matter what the article or venue-boring and highly unproductive in moving the discussion forward.
Comment: ONE CAT, ONE VOTE, ONE BEER! A bipartisan Congress, the very Congress that has allowed George W. Bush and his criminals to get away with treason and insurrection against the Constitution of the United States and the American electorate, is the very Congress of two parties that has given us Clinton and McCain. Obama is an innocent bystander.
ONE CAT, ONE VOTE, ONE BEER! Remove Bush and Cheney from office before November 2008.
Elected Nader for President.
Take by Congress from K Street! ONE CAT, ONE VOTE, ONE BEER. Stop the war waged agaisnt the American electorate via Iraq via Republican support of Bush and Congressional BIPARTISAN Allegiance to obstruciton of justice in the Executive Branch and THREE Offices of the Attorney General of the United States. GOT WAR IF YOU WANT IT!!!!!!
Comment: What Mr. Fineman glosses over is, at least McCain has a voice to lose. Obama has never had voice 'to lose'. Pretty words do not constitute a 'voice'.
Comment: Gentelelmen: we the people want to end this congress,s & this adminastrations war for oil. we want carbon neutral homes so we dont pay our enemys to take our tax $$$ this congress is so crupt they vote for there profilio. & most hold stocks in the oil companys& the pharmasutals. soi we the people get screwed. we want and end. so we will vote for obama. i and about 7 million want DR. ron paul. you the media should look up my web site at care2.com. it fight big oil. i my self will run for GOV. of

NOT THE JUSTISE DEPT. THAT IS SO CRUPPT HALF THE COPS ARE ON THE TAKE. THEY HAVE BANK ACCOUTS OFF SHORE. ASK THE RET, OFFICER FROM LEAP.COM THEY WILL TELL YOU.
Comment: From where did McCain get all the money for his spectacular back-from -the-dead comeback after his disastrous Amnesty fiasco last summer? Who are the biggest supporters of amnesty? Not the little guy, not the small businesses who play by the rules and who contribute the paltry sums allowed by Senator McClean. No. The media never told us the real story of McAmnesty's amazing comeback, because it was financed by K Street.
Comment: Yea your right. This lobbyist story is right up there with this Sinclair and Obama story about crack rock, homo bj's, and lie detector tests.
Won't they ever learn.
NOBAMA!!!
Comment: I love this. McCain, the media darling, suddenly becomes the corrupt insider hack. The political cartoons suddenly all show him in bed with lobbyists. Ha ha. He deserves it. He made the media all-powerful with McCain -Feingold. He has a sordid past that until now the media has buried. Decades of insider dealings that we were never permitted to know about - because of the deal between McCain and the media, the deal that now the ever-relioiable are now reneging on. Poetic justice
Comment: No one respected the media more than McCain. As Fomeeman admits, no politician in our time gave thge media better aceess. So what does McCain get for his openess and trust: Slancer, Innuendo and Tabloid Gutter Journalism. No wonder McCain is not availabie.
Comment: Can anyone blame McCain for now being more careful with the media? McCain treated the press with more respect than any politician living today, perhaps ever. And this is what he gets: Slander, Innuendo an gutter tabloid journalism.
Comment: This is an open invitation for Howard Fineman to come on to my show. I see him on the T.V. all the time, so I'm sure that he'll come on. By the way, Howard, it's been brought to my attention, by an anonymous source(I know you understand) that you had your face on the genitalia of a certain person, in a backroom booth, at a gay bar in D.C. So, can I put you down for a "YES" for my show?
Comment: This article is a perfect example of why some people think Mr. Fineman is a barometer of the MSM. He ignores the widespread journalistic and public revulsion to the Times article. Even other organs of the MSM like the New Republic have taken the Times article apart. Two or three behind the curve of the story, one can only see this article as microscopic and agenda-driven.
Comment: Fineman's columns are geared for one thing and one thing only ....he must absolutely must get on Hard Ball and Kieths show. This guy is addicted and I mean addictef to seeing his face on TV. Whay has Journalism wrought oh my. We should all chip in and send him to rehab....and then think of all the stories we would be getting and how others would follow. Headlines Barbara Walters entered celebrity rehab today at HOWARD FINEMAN CLINIC.
Comment: I think you missed the real story here, Mr. Fineman. The NY Times has faced an equal amount of scrutiny for printing a "thinly sourced" story against perpetual nemesis: the Republican presidential presidential candidate. For an article dated Saturday, I'm at a loss why your piece doesn't even acknowledge the criticism the Times was forced to endure by many in the mainstream press including its own ombudsman.

Comment: Straight Talk Express or the BS Beltway Shuttle? Washington DC's favorite candidate is an embarassment to the Republican party and the thrumping he is going to take at the hands of Barack Obama in November may mark the end of my party. Actually it serves us right- the all time lower voter turnout in our primaries allows the crooks to rule.
Comment: With the help of the press Obama will beat McCain, however I do not think that Obama will be there on the part of Ordinary citizen unless he can get some press from it. As a constituent of Mr Obama's I have contacted his office on 2 occasions about a public official in our local government that lied under oath, and committed perjury, trying to cover up the fact that he intentionally failed to do his job. If Mr Obama had requested the evidence that I had and after looking at it felt there was no reason for the U,S, attorneys office in Central Illinios to investigate I could accept his decision. But as my Senator(and a candidate that is always bringing up conversations he has had with the "people" he nor his senate office has even bothered to let me know that they recieved my fax or e-mail. So there is no way that I can believe that he is interested in representing the american people in the future anymore than he represents the citizens of Illinois now.
Comment: We have a candidate whose campaign is --in point of fact --staffed by lobbyists at the highest level. Black, who keeps telling us how McCain is not beholden to lobbyists, is himself a power lobbyist.
Maybe McCain has never betrayed the public trust. However, it's probable OK to be a little skeptical of the judgment of a man who thinks that we can continue a war indefinitely (despite the fact that Nobel Prize winning economist Stiglitz already estimates the overall cost at $3 trillion) while still preserving huge tax cuts for the wealthy. He even thinks he gets to call himself a fiscal conservative.
I didn't know that living on IOUs was fiscally conservative.
It should be noted, by the way, that the last time we had "stagflation" it was triggered by Johnson's decision to fund the Vietnam war with deficits. The was done for the same reason it is being done now --the public at large didn't see the value and didn't want to pay for it.
So if McCain expects me to believe in this press mirage of his extreme integrity, he better either drop the no new tax nonsense, and come up for a funding mechanism for his little war, or give up the war (unlikely), or quit claiming that he's a fiscal conservative. As things stands, he's just another guy who wants to give tax cuts to his rich pals, while leaving my kids to pay for this war he claims is so important.
Maybe it is. If so, show some integrity. Fund it with something besides IOUs on my kids' future.
So don't tell me he ha never sold out the public interest. His whole campaign is a sell-out.
Comment: Thanks very much for telling the truth that needs to be told. Straight talk or not, does any one honestly believe that the Republican party, the party of the haves, really cares anything about the vast majority of this nationl's and this world's have nots? Look at the record. Look at who's giving donations to McCain and why. Look at who's supporting McCain, and why. Rheotic aside, we're getting the same old, same old. In a Kafkaesque world where all things are possible, this election is like pitting Martin Luther King with Brezhnev. McCain, obviously jealous of all the publicity Obama is gettting, is starting the same old hate and smear routine.(Ever hear the slogan, Don't hate, appreciate? Incidentally, the New York Times article was really old new. Matt Drudge revealed McCain's so-called "affair" last December. The Boston Globe printed the Paxson connection about 8 years ago. Why is the right wing getting upset now> (Source of information: Rachel Maddow, Air America, and a recent article in the Los Angeles Times.)
