Why cant a woman be the president? gender is not the most important for being president. Someone said on http://www.blackgirlsconnect.com/ there someone would change the rules of this campaign.

goatherd: I see you haven't been reading either. I hope there aren't many people reading your comments and agreeing as ridculous as they are. He was born with the name and is not a practiing Muslim. Please read a little more. He a Christian, who shouldn't have to denounce his name to satisfy the paranoya from war, in which he was against in the first place. Talk to GW and Co.

Even if Barack Obama were muslim, what difference should it make? None. But the sad part is that it would make a difference, a huge difference, which just goes to show that we still have a long road ahead towards eliminating senseless bigotry from our society. We would be a lot better off with a few less "Christians" and a few more practitioners of whatever faith that could abide by one overarching principle: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It really is that simple.

May be he was against going to a war with another Hussein, in the first place.

    • Posted By: angie_nc @ 02/26/2008 8:04:40 PM

I agree with you on this --- and the problem is people keep saying "muslim" when maybe they mean "Arabic" -- his name is arabic -- and it shouldn't be an issue. But, Rove is going to use it to play into American's craven fears.

It is disappointing to see in the posted comments that for some, Obama or anyone defeating Hillary Clinton could never do so by their own merits. That no one can be better or more deserving than the Clintons is just as ridiculous as claiming that the media or the author of this article is incompetent. The inconvenient truth is that it is Obama who commands attention and inspiration because he is black, intelligent and surprisingly compelling and successful. This surprise is unexpected and unforgivable for the 'all-for-the-clintons-and-nothing-for-the-rest' group. Barack Obama success is just as surprising as the poor campaign by the clintons who have had the media on their side for a long time. Obama has not been without scrutiny. I remember the slander, the mockery on Obama at the beginning of his race. Plus, thanks to the media I know where Obama went to school as he was growing up and I also know his grand-mother is alive in Kenya. Do I know the same information about Hillary? you might, but I don't. More can be discovered on Obama. It will come with time just as it was the case with the Clintons. Let's not forget to celebrate what we are witnessing. Could it be that the rest of the world has more appreciation for this surprise. In this so imperfect world, there will always be an imperfect winner and an imperfect looser.

Interesting analysis. McCain androgynous? Kind of a political version of Marilyn Manson? That might be a stretch.

Obama has certainly outmaneuvered Clinton. I do believe that Clinton has exhibited that Bushesque trait of not being able to change course when it's obviously not working. It's strange because her husband seemed to know this as he often would quote the definition of stupid: "....doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Maybe he's too close to her to effectively remind her of this truism.

    • Posted By: frjiles1 @ 02/26/2008 3:21:57 PM

Please allow me to pleasantly disagree. Obama HAS NOT outmaneuvered Clinton. Clinton did not underestimate Obama. She underestimated how much the Media DISLIKE her and her husband! The Media has given Obama an absolute free pass with everything and disected and heavily critizing every single thing she does. Whenever Clinton tried to defend herself or as some of you would state, Attack Obama, the Media shielded him and outcasted her. Their tactics turned people away from Clinton and towards Obama--but this is the plan!

Well let me state this, if/when he get the nomination, the Media will no longer shield him they ALONG WITH the Republicans will crucify him. The Media has only uplifted and shielded Obama so that he will take away Clinton votes and become the Democratic nominee. If this happens, you will see a SWIFT change in how Obama is treated by the Media.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 02/26/2008 3:29:36 PM

It's a sore loser that blames everyone but themselves. Tracy Flick, aka Hillary, thought her nomination was inevitable. Barack surprised her. She hasn't compensated and thus her chances are going down in flames. It wouldn't be the first time, nor the last time, that America says no to the establishment candidate and strikes out for new territory.

        • Posted By: frjiles1 @ 02/26/2008 8:41:27 PM

I can respect your position but I totally disagree. However, let's continue to watch the news coverage and have this discussion a couple of months from now especially if Obama is the nominee. I think you will see that there is ALOT of validity with what I am saying in this post and previous posts! Have a great day and thank you for disagreeing respectfully!

        • Posted By: SandyJordan @ 02/26/2008 4:31:58 PM

Why do Hillary Clinton's backers always "put down" all the people who have responded to Barack Obama's candidacy and voted for him? It is almost like they are saying: "You are so stupid and gullible, you have been manipulated by the vast pro-Obama media conspiracy, and cannot see what we Hillary-supporters can see, how superior she is."

Do these folks really think they are going to win votes and influence people with this paranoid, condescending drivel?

        • Posted By: jaimehlers @ 02/26/2008 4:31:18 PM

Hear hear. As the saying goes, plans never survive the first engagement. People ignore that at their own peril, much like Clinton did. She's still trying to do things the same way as when she first started, so of course it's not working. If she was adaptable and changed her strategy to compensate, she would still be the front-runner.

First of all, I am an intelligent woman that has been educated. Learn to write a cohernt sentence. The presidency is about checking how someone has done things before you elect him. You may care for color more than your country, but this country needs help and we need someone that can do it. Actions speak greater than words. Check Factcheck.com. Obama is a liar.

Why are racists in love with all-caps? Can we use this tendency to route them out of our society? Perhaps the proper use of the caps-lock key should be requisite for citizenship.

Senator Obama's father was from Kenya this photo was taken in 2006 during a visit. He was given the traditional local garb as a gift. Did you notice that the man in the photo with him is instructing him in how to properly wear it. Beat another dead horse for goodness sake, how many times does it have to be shoved in your face. "SENATOR BARAK H. OBAMA IS NOT A MUSLIM TERRORIST. HE IS NOT PART OF AN AL QUAIDA CONSPIRACY. If you do not agree with his politics, then by all means do not vote for him. But this constant dragging this man through the mud just points out your complete ignorance.

      • Posted By: Tired of Media Spin @ 02/26/2008 8:33:25 PM

This was a personal picture of Obama's. Give me a break, this is just some more of his corrupt Chicago style politics. I heard nothing about his personal picture being stolen from his home. Obama is a sick sick man!

Mlbuie---I am not an angry woman just because I have an opinion. You have a right to back anyone you want and if Obama is your choice so be it. I have been called a racist, a lesbian, a kook, because of my posts so angry is nothing. I have given time to my community and all my children and grandchildren volunteer their time to their community. There is nothing wrong with anger if it builds a fire under someone to enable them to make a positive contribution. By the way, I am a pacifist. If you judge others the way you judged me, I am glad I dont live in your neighborhood.

    • Posted By: mlbuie @ 02/26/2008 4:45:28 PM

Anger blinds others to your position. It makes you sound like a luntaic instead of a person of thought. Try reasoning for a change . :)

What is your goal when you argue? To sway another's opinion ... to at least get them to understand?
Or are you just venting and "to hell with anyone else"?

      Think about it.

Oh .. and you aren't the only one who gives of themselves to their community or others ...

      • Posted By: Tired of Media Spin @ 02/26/2008 8:23:09 PM

She is angry because you are an idiot. I myself am not an emotional buyer. I researched Obama, nuclear leaks, rewriting a bill and being given $200,000 to run for president. Is not my kind of leader. You are a fool!

  • Posted By: ATypical @ 02/26/2008 6:29:10 PM

Wow. I'm not sure which debates or policies Jimmy D has been watching. Here's the deal for those of you who just don't get it. 40 years ago African Americans couldn't even vote! Women had similair struggles.Today America has grown in ways no one could've possibly predicted. Evolution is inevitable and we are witnessing it today. Sure there are differences in debating strategies some good, some bad. Scrutiny is part of politics. Don't think for a second either candidate has not been researched as far back as conception to unearth any unsavory behavior. The bottom line is this: America is ready for change (You can't deny Obama and his campaign their foresight that this messgae would be received well) Change will be the first Black or Female president, no question. But the true change is someone without the history (what Hillary calls experience) It's clearly Obama's time to make a difference.

    • Posted By: Tired of Media Spin @ 02/26/2008 8:20:26 PM

Please check fact check, Obama has a history - research it! It is not nice, nuclear leaks and payoffs

  • Posted By: polisciguy2814 @ 02/26/2008 8:05:39 PM

samson30: Tell me where this article says, at any point, that it thinks you should vote for Obama. Can't do it? That's because the "bias" that you claim is there doesn't exist.

  • Posted By: mlfn @ 02/26/2008 7:59:24 PM

curryjm, happy to have you absent from comments since yours was without substance. Thanks for this article; it says and expresses what I have felt and thought but been unable to articulate. Hillary, you did not "get hot" in Cincinnati; you got obnoxious and paternalistic, perhaps revealing your true innner self, misty eyes and all.

    • Posted By: curryjm @ 02/26/2008 8:02:40 PM

MLfn: Yeah, I guess it is hard to articulate when you are stoned!

  • Posted By: mlfn @ 02/26/2008 8:02:24 PM

curryjm, go away and don't read since here you added no substance whatsoever. I appreciate this piece because it has expressed what I wanted to but could not articulate. It is a broad, intelligent approach to life and poltics and the business of governance that Obama brings to the table. And that course has been missing from the menu for way too long. A true Christian, also smart, with vision and experience legislating, working in the trenches, negotiating across the aisle, and living in places many in this country will never see but need to understand in order to engage in international policymaking.

  • Posted By: polisciguy2814 @ 02/26/2008 8:02:07 PM

wickham: I'm deeply sorry that you aren't open minded enough to see that electing a minority is just as much of a radical change as electing a woman. Since this country's founding, and even before that the only people of any significant power in this country, that is to say the President, have been white men. Electing Clinton would change one of those two things, just like electing Obama would. I agree with you on Oprah though.

  • Posted By: mkunnecke @ 02/26/2008 7:21:11 PM

As a black woman, I continue to be horrified and deeply saddened by the obvious bias against Hilary Clinton and for Obama in the press. The media is selecting the democratic candidate for us and it sickens me that the whole affair has been turned into a popularity contest. As for Obama's sensitivity to women. I am appalled that his obvious put-downs and slights regarding Mrs. Clinton has been glossed over. He can do no wrong in the eyes of the press. I hope the American people are not so feeble-minded that they can not recognize the rampant sexism that it at play. It is in full force and it is as ugly as any other bigotry that exists and equally as wrong.

    • Posted By: sheba0315 @ 02/26/2008 8:01:08 PM

That's because sexism began in the Garden of Eve when Adam said, "this woman thou gave to be with me...." It's been around far longer than racism and all the other "isms." However, it is not the media bias that's against Hiliary it's her campaign's underestimation of Senator Obama. Hiliary appears to be out-of-touch with mainstream America -- especially young adults. She needs to restructure her campaign before it's too late.

  • Posted By: SE Croft @ 02/26/2008 8:00:32 PM

Dear Special Guest Columnist--- I agree with your take on where Obama and Clinton fall on that male-female range you've cleverly invented. However, I think once you give McCain a thorough examination you'll find John to be more of a man than Hillary is. Too bad you had to duck this part and toss him off like that at the end. Up until then, your article held much credibility. As it stands now, it's just a long political commercial for McCain in which one feels a bit had at the end.

What a load of crap. Now I remember why I stopped reading Newsweek years ago.

  • Posted By: ferrp @ 02/26/2008 7:38:25 PM

How does this even get published? This is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I've read in what has been an outrageously ridiculous campaign. Evidently Barack Obama is the empty vessel that every simple-minded fool can pour their "hopes" into and create their own ideal candidate. Obama the first female president?! Please, somebody do the human race a favor and make sure Martin Linsky never publishes another word.

This past week Fidel Castro stepped down from his presidency - and dictatorship - of Cuba after FIFTY years ... an incredible long period for any nation's leader. But does anyone recall the moment when - after Castro won his revolution - that Cuba could have gone on a pth to democracy? It was 1959, Castro was only a moderate (his younger brother was the ruthless one) who asked to talk to the President of the United sates to discuss assistance for his nation and to develop trade relations. Eisenhower firmly refused to have any discussions with him and instead played golf. That's right. think what would have happened in history if Eisenhower had had the maturity of leadership to give Castro the respect of another nation's leader (who had overthrown Batista - a lackey that has been installed by the American CIA no less) and to simply sit down with him for several days to discuss what could be agreed upon that would benefit the people of Cuba. Now think of what could have happened in all of history if Barack Obama had been President back in 1959 ...
