Not to nitpick, but Bill Clinton was not even president in 1988, the year this blog's author claims Toni Morrison called Clinton the "first black president." Blogging is a wonderful communication device, but the lack of editing process is clearly a weakness. Another problem with the article is that the characterization, however tongue-in-cheek, of Barack Obama as the first female president is based on his characteristics of inclusiveness, willingness to identify his own errors, and fess up to his own shortcomings and past mistakes. Only someone with supreme self confidence would be able to handle such personal openness, not exactly a trait women in our society are trained to exhibit (to everyone's detriment). Perhaps, there is much more variation to gender roles than the author can fathom, and maybe, just maybe, both Obama and Hillary fall somewhere unpredictably along that wide spectrum of gender, because of innate personality traits, just like all the rest of us.

    This article is stupid.

    Dumb and stupid.

Your take on what's happening is cheap and simple minded, Can you see that Americans have moved beyond this kind of nonsense? Write what you know instead of what your publishers want to put out. That can pay off for you.

The way I see Obama is that he isn't interested in changing old, dead, rules that are no longer working. He's embracing new ways that have lots of potential to work. He's a person for the times right now.

An interesting article and discussion of such a taboo subject. That someone can have the same strengths as someone else, especially if that someone else is an injured party, is clearly a hard pill to swallow. I for one am more interested in bridging the gap than protecting our "sacred" differences.

    Well Done.

I'm sorry Martin is it? I'm afraid you don't speak for women, or rather, I should say I'm glad YOU don't speak for women, because you have no idea what you're talking about. What a lame attempt to persuade women to Obama's camp.

Your take on what's happenig is cheap, simple minded, and out-dated. Can you understand that Americans don't buy into this type of thinking like they used to? Stop trying to please your publishers and start thinking for yourself.. It will pay off.

The way I see Obama is that he isn't interested in changing old, dead rules that no longer work. He's simply embracing "new" ways that can work. (There's really nothing new here, except for willingness).

Fasher: You're right about her not kicking him to the curb because of her own ambition. The other side is forgiveness ( in the real world, which the Clintons and others in there position haven't been previed to for decades) but think about it this way, how could she ever run for President as a single woman? (In my most sarcastic voice) It's unamerican!

  • Posted By: coastal2 @ 02/26/2008 7:15:34 PM

The story is silly in it's premise, but the photo will be legendary.

I'm fascinated by the dialog, seriously. I think it's healthy.

Angie _NC, Just stop and think for a second. Hillary comes in with HISTORY. The Clintons and Bushs are like the HATFIELDS and MCCOYS. That has nothing to do with Obama. He has stated in every debate and I have watched them all, that their policy differences are not far apart. Hillary is so pissed at Obama, but her anger is pointed in the wrong direction. She needs to be pissed at Bill, her campaign manager(s), etc. She choose to go down some destructive roads with her campaign tactics and now it's Obama's fault? It would seem she's the one lacking experience.

I'm not denying the whole Hatfield and McCoy thing between the Bushes and Clintons. But that doesn't explain why the media has played into that and it doesn't explain why they gave Obama a free ride. (btw -- I'm not saying I hate Obama, I'm saying the media hasn't given him the scrutiny they should have, and which it is their job to do!) All this campaigning and we still aren't sure what we are getting with Obama and what kind of attacks Rove has in his bag of tricks. (and hate her all you want, you have to admit we already know everything "bad" there is to know about Hillary). After Obama gets the nom (if he does), then it will be too late. And for all the Obama supporters who are crying foul about Hillary's attacks, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Although I don't agree with the characterzation of Obama being the first woman President, I can't hold Obama and his accomplishments responsible for this authors shallow attempts to inject this woman vs. man poison into the debate. Now I don't understand why women are so angered by Obama's success in this campaign. Does his presence and what's looking to be like his race to win, threaten any prior or future accomplishments of women? The more people divide the two the less likely they will be on the same ticket regardless of the outcome. Why don't we embrace the accomplishments of both up to this point, if the Democratica process is what's really important? At the end of the day, it comes down to, who has the best chance to beat McCain?
    Think about it!!

I am a woman, and I will tell you why I do not support Obama. I am an intellegent woman, so I do not listen to rhetoric. I reserch what has Obama given us as a Country. While in the Senate he re-wrote his own bill so the Nuclear power plants are mandated to report nuclear leaks. The bill did not pass, but Obama was given $200,000 for his presdential campaign. Now lets see what else I found, he stopped tarrifs on imports so that other big corporations could get their goods cheaper, at a cost to us tax payers of $12 million dollars. Oh, by the way he has kept the misinformation of him mandated nuclear waste leaks on his website. If the Obama supporters go to fact check instead of acting like silly school children, his health plan is not Universal and I am a professional for 30 years dealing with the insurance companies - your tax dollars will explode. So, you do not know why women are angry, we check things out because we have heard lines and rhetoric all of our lives.

Please stop calling Bill Clinton black! He will never know what it is like to wear the skin I wear for one SECOND! It's an insult! STOP! He's a white male who appealed to the black vote to win! He is far from black! He and WHITE AMERICA knows NOTHING of what it's like! So STOP insulting me and my ancestors! Find another name for him, like UNETHICAL, CHEATER, RACIST & UNSCRUPULOUS! Yes, I said it and I MEAN IT!

Decision08. it precisely what it is. Obama has run a brilliant campaign, period. Don't think for a second that the media would allow any candidate, let alone an African American to acheive this level of success in a Presidential campaign without direct scrutiny, come on people. Let's get real. That's not to say it's not the same with Hillary, they're both minorities. But when you look at the manner in which she has run her campaign, no wonder she's been losing. You talk about arrogance.

Obama didn't skip campaigning in any states.
Obama had a plan after Super Tuesday, Hillary didn't
Obama raised millions, in preparation for a long campaign, Hillary didn't
Obama didn't stoop to typical smear tactics, like the plagerism tactic, Hillary did (Only to use a phrase, clearly she didn't write)

Bottom line is, this country is in desperate need for change. I have read all there policies and plans, watched every debate. Change can't come from the norm, it has to be driven from the new.

    • Posted By: notanObatamot @ 02/26/2008 7:10:41 PM

right, he just skipped the black caucus and is avoiding debates and media questions. saying that he has been subject to the black-american experience is a stretch, saying that he has true emphathy for women and their experience is impossible.

This country is in desperate need for Hillary, not Obama

GTX13: What does that mean? I'm curious

Being a lifelong democrat does not mean that one should vote the party line. Perhaps all Hillary, Dodd, Edwards, Biden supporters should vote for John McCain or for Ralph Nader to teach the party a lesson. Ronald Reagan won with the disillusioned democrats (Reagan Democrats). Oh, some of you are too young to remember, however, this fall you will have a history lesson when McCain wins with the McCain democrats.

To Strong Black Woman -- Let he without sin cast the first stone -- I think keeping your marriage vows and choosing to forgive is the Christian thing to do. Yes, it is the harder thing to do, which it is why so many woman would not forgive.

To me what the author is describing are the principles of collaborative leadership that Obama learned as a community organizer. It is a servant leader or facilitative leader who asks the right questions rather than prescribing positions, who brings people together and trusts in the group's wisdom and the perspectives of those he disagrees with to map our the the win-win negotiating space. This approach works very well to build community at the local level; I'm excited to see if it can work at the national and global levels. The collaborative approach represents a profound sort of change I think the nation is ready for.

Have you had your brains sucked out. Obama is no woman. How many lies do you have to be told before you get you are being used.

  • Posted By: notanObatamot @ 02/26/2008 7:06:30 PM

This is probably the most inane article I've seen yet. Totally ridiculous, so it isn't enough that Obama is a savior of all, he is now transgender? Martin, this is just plain stupid and an embarassment to journalism. Obviously, you have no clue what it means to be a woman. Obama is not even a supporter of womens issues. Further, he has turned a blind eye, if not reinforced the misogynistic anti-hillary support.

  • Posted By: Tired of Media Spin @ 02/26/2008 7:04:33 PM

Good grief, how much propaganda can we take. I want to vomit! I am a woman, he is no woman. We need another source for information and news. Our news sources makes totaliarn contries look good.

  • Posted By: curryjm @ 02/26/2008 7:01:00 PM

Good grief, this Martin Linsky guy must have been smoking dope. Real nice, calling Obama a woman. I guess we can't say he is black; too obvious. But Martin Linsky has the incredible insight to see that Obama is female. Yo, Martin; you're not doing Barack any favors. You should go back to your smoky, ivory tower and rethink what you have said. Ridiculous!
