Comment: Why would anyone be against the idea of complete eradication of the opium trade?
Afghanistan's narcotics trade is back with a vengeance. Washington's latest antidrug plan is unlikely to curb it.

Comment: Why would anyone be against the idea of complete eradication of the opium trade? I say napalm all of the poppy fields!

Comment: napalm them
Comment: It may be wise if the US government went into Afghanistan and purchases the opium crops from the farmers. That would ensure farmers a revenue source and reduce the flow of opium worldwide. It would also create a financial pinch for the Taliban. What is the value of the crop at the local level? It may be less than what we are spending fighting the opium trade.
Comment: If Afghanistan creates ninety percent of the poppies for the world. You cant tell me they dont create poppies for the united states. Opiate based pain killers have risen in the united states almost 100%. Where does it all come from? The ninety percent thats grown in Afghanistan! So in reality we are paying for the guns that are being used against us in the sapposed war on terror.
Comment: I am English and I'd like to educate Americans on the truth about opium; There is a World shortage of the stuff, for the production of painkilling pharmaceuticals. Therefore what's all this rubbish about fighting the Afghan opium farmers ? The shortage is of such a concern that English farmers are being asked to grow it ! This is absolutely true, even down to the fact that I have personally seen an opium field near Andover, in my home county of Hampshire.My.my,how politicians love to mis-educate the people, simply to harvest votes and better their own ends ! I am not anti-American,have holidayed in your country on 3 occasions and wish I could afford to do so again, but even trades are poorly paid here and we're constantly suffering increases in taxes, which makes it prohibitive. So,we're lied to by politicians as well.Never take anyone's word for anything-find out yourselves !
Comment: OPIUM HAS BEN USED FOR 10.000 YEARS WITHOUT ANY1 COMPLAINING ABOUT ADDICTION-- ITS ALL JUST A REPUBLICAN SCAM TO EVADE THE REAL ISSUES AND PROBLEMS HERE IN AMERICA
Comment: Absolutely spot on Wenzzdae-it's similar to the Margaret Thatcher situation over the Falklands war-she had intelligence info, months before that the Argentinians intended to invade the islands, and did nothing about it.Because she knew that a wave of fanatical patriotism would mask the real issues here in England at that time.Seems to be politicians staple ploy;divert attention overeas to avoid flak about the real home issues !
Comment: i have to ask, why would the taliban be supporting drugs now when they were the ones that banned in during their time in power? I really believe this increase in poppy is because the warlords and northern alliance that the US supports is the ones that are growing it, not the taliban.
Comment: I am having a really difficult time understanding why there was only one coment that even remotely mentioned the deaths in our country caused by heroin, oxycontin and the like. Yeah, as one of you so eliquently put it.." an addict will be an addict "c., etc., etc.,etc. Haven't any of you heaerd that the United States is fighting it's own war on drugs?? The statistics are absolutely astonuding in realtion to the number of people that opiates killin this country every year. Hell, just get on a website for death statistics in the county or state in which you live and you can see it for yourself. What about the lives that these drugs destroy, what about the toll drug abuse takes on families in our own back yards?? Leagalizing HEROIN is certainly NOT the answer. My comment is not to imply that I have a solution for this problem but rather to share my thoughts on how ignorant a belief it is that legalizing drugs is the answer to any of the facts stated in this article. It's all very interesting how Afghanistan is the leading producer of poppy and how the UN wants to erradicate those fields. Personally I am a hell of a lot more concerned about the toll that drug abuse takes on our country, on our economy than I am over whether or not a farmer can find another financially measurable crop to support himself. And just an FYI for the commments implying that some how by legalizing heroin we will thus be taking our US soldiers out of harms way..... that "it would save a lot of military lives". Your damn right it would because guess what? You get our soldiers over there in a poppy field and trust me, a large percentage of them would rapidly develpo and addiction to the very substance they were sent there to erradicate. And lastly I would like to say that if any of youfolks had your life effected by your own addiction or by the addiction of a loved one, you surely wouldnt want to see this drug legalized. How does that saying go??? BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
Comment: The government which can declare opium illegal can also declare Tylenol or Bayer illegal one day as well. Do you want your government to have that kind of power? Do you want the government telling you what you can and cannot put into your body?
Comment: With the huge demand for heroin in the US it would be prudent to deal with this demand rather than finance a military in Afghanistan. A start would be to legalize drugs and then there would be no profitt in a poppy crop. It would save a lot of military deaths.
Comment: Wouldn't it be simlpler if the US would deal with the domestic demand for heroin. With no demand in the US, the poppy crop would have no value. Legalizing drugs would go a long way to getting US soldiers out of danger

Comment: same ole war different day~Qan Bush qontrol the narco Devil? do enough narco and you can see god or devil. maybe grow some carrots or tobacco
Comment: We've seen this before. Prohibition caused a black market allowing organized crime to flourish. When prohibition ended so did the majority of the organized crime lords. We are seeing this again today. We've tried cutting demand and cutting supply. Neither work. We spend billions fighting the Taliban, Al Queda and FARC. The only way to cut off their funds is to legalize drugs thus making profits in the black market absolete. It's a win-win. Stop spending billions fighting organized crime and allow our tax revenue base to increase with the tax on drugs. Yes, there will probably be more druggies on the street but that is their personal choice. I much prefer a few extra drug addicts than to allow terrorist groups to flourish.
Comment: What did we do before drugs like Heroin, Cocaine, and Crystal Meth were illegal? We Taught our children to stay away from these drugs. Drug addicts will be drug addicts, Alcoholics will be Alcoholics, and criminals will be criminals. Stop this stupid, wasteful war on drugs, and legalize it. I know not to be a crack head, I see crack heads, I see the life they live in, and I don't want to be part of that world. We need to start allowing people to be responsible for themselves.
Comment: We've tried to cut the supply, we've tried to cut the demand. Face it, you CANNOT win. I thought maybe we'd have learned a lesson from prohibition. The same thing happened. We made alcohol illegal and we created organized crime. We made it legal again and it did not pay to do business, the organized crime vanished. The Taliban, Al Quaeda and the FARC all get money from illegal drugs. Why not just make drugs legal? We can tax it, control it and then these groups will have to find other ways to finance their organizations. Collect money from taxes, stop speding money from fighting drugs and these organizations. A win-win.
Comment: wait, is that a joke? Just buy it from them for 1 billion? Who do you think the farmers are? Do you think they have bank accounts? These are Taliban members, and peasant farmers who live under Taliban rule. Simple minds.
Comment: This is a joke. We allow Afghans to grow opium, if we aren't getting our cut, or if a group of farmers are skipping the middle man, we crack down on them. The all mighty dollar. If opium were considered a weapon of mass destruction, we'd cracked down on it, and completely eradicate it in Afghanistan. What a shameful photo, a mother and her kids doing heroin. This is a poison to all of mankind. All of your heroin death, and oxycotin death can be trace right back to Afghanistan. All a terrorist has to do to get a nuke into America, is simply hide it underneath the import of Heroin. Hypocrisy, look it up.
Comment: Just pay the farmers the 1 billion dollars that the opiumn crop is worth and use it for for making opiate based medications .
Comment: We should just buy the opiumn from the afgans at a cost of 1 billion dollars.
Comment: The Drugs bring BIG MONEY. The same Taliban that sneered at drugs. took to drugs for money and revenge against the users in the West. Only a few years ago the US Govt. said that a medium size poppy growing scheme by the Afghans was ok as it helped their economy. The Pakistanis are also involved in drug trading. Their economy also needs a bit of support as the billions given to Pakistan and Afghanistan by the U S are not enough.
We always manage to get strange bed-fellows.
Comment: why dont the drug companies buy the opium from the farmers, then use it for medicine and then the people have money too! building an economy there seems not to be working. these famers are atleast working, right?
