His Cheating Brain

Why do powerful men risk everything for sex? It has to do with brain chemistry, evolution and, yes, testosterone.

Comment: Anyone interested in this topic is encouraged to also see the works of Dr. Patrick Carnes on Sexual Addiction and Pia Mellody on Intamacy and Co-Dependence. A powerful person living in such extreme conflict with their public self may be highly functional in their chosen field, but mentally and spiritually ill.

Comment: Thinking that what is natural is good is a fallacy. Resorting to violent actions when upset is a natural course to take, complete with physiological responses and brain waves. We need to think about the people we hurt with out behavior. In my example of violent behavior we hurt people physically, and in the case of infidelity we hurt people emotionally.

Comment: Well, it is the year 2008, a black man could be a president and you are writing about why a power man have extra sex. Are you serious?

Why do you think we are in this world for? To be a good sexless governor? a good sexless president?

Having extra sex is a natural thing to do until those who cannot get extra sex tell us it is politically incorrect to screw around. People like you.

Comment: That male sexual response is able to so dictate its demands to the most powerful of men, not to mention Jo Bloke as well, makes this response more aptly described as a corruption within human nature. Men rarely mention that sexual response knows no fidelity. And wifes delude themselve in thinking otherwise. I think the Bard will have the last laugh on everyone: From his poem Venus and Adonis:

Call it not love, for Love to heaven is fled
Since sweating lust on earth usurp'd His name.
Under whose simple semblance man hath fed
upon fresh beauty blotting it with blame,
Which the hot tyranny stains and soon bereaves
As caterpillers do the tender leaves.

Love comforteth like sunshine after rain
but lusts effect is tempest after sun,
Love's gentle spring doth always fresh remain
Lust's winter comes ere summer half be done.
Love surfeits not love like a glutton dies,
Love ins all truth, lust full of forged lies.

Comment: It has nothing to do with position in society or power or job it has everything to do with sex.It is completely natural for both men and women to want sex with others after they have been with one person for a while. They do it for the sex with different people plain and simple......completely biological and natural.

The brain/mind operates in such a way...it has a natural inclination to dull, so no matter how much stimulation from the outside, this brain/mind is dulled by sensitivities, so they need more and more. Would I call someone who can't control or even know himself powerful? no...he's the furthest from power...that's the beauty of it... American society is taught to believe that these folks should be put in positions of power/wealth/priviledge, when these folks are just chemically inbalanced in the head, and all they need is some sort of "adjustment." These are the "messiahs" of this society? It reflects more on the society that puts up with these "leaders" than the leader themself.

Comment: Hurtful impulses? Must be a christian!. Let me ask you all, if you hear a good joke even if it might be mean, is it less stressfull on our bodies to laugh or keep a stern face. Studies have shown that it takes more energy to not laugh than just open up. The same applies to sex my friends. If you see a good looking woman it take too much energy to hold back than just to "release" your self.

Comment: Evolutionary explanations are not meant to be justifications. Having a natural inclination does not on any way lessen the individual's responsibility for his or her actions. Knowing about such inclinations is useful, because it allows us to know what we're up against and tighten our defenses against our own hurtful impulses. I agree that this guy is horrible, but I don't think the aritcle is meant to excuse that.

Comment: i dont buy all the psychobabble spewed in this article. the guy, the prostitute, and other damaged persons like them, are sociopaths. plain and simple. all that alphamale garbage is precisely that: garbage. a man is no more inclined to cheat than a woman UNLESS he chooses to do so. people whom justify and rationalize a grown man or woman's failure to apply restraint upon themself are part of the problem, too. only a child functions, should, function at a purely emotional level. adults are supposed to have developed mental faculties which enable us to determine right from wrong.

Comment: I am tired of head-lines that down-grade the hiring of a prostitute to a simple act of cheating. People cheat, relationships crumble, but hiring a prostitute is NOT just on issue of infedality.

It is insulting to men to say testosterone makes you more likely to be a cheater. Hiring a prostitute is not the same as having an affair on your spouse, it is the act of renting someone's sexual organs. I wish the media would stop equating this CRIMINAL ACT as a biological need for a testosterone driven competative man to cheat. It is disgusting and petty to say that cheating and hiring a prostitute are both the same time. One can involve the other, but not all cheating is an act of hiring a protitute. Neither are morally correct, but one is much more criminal a derogatory then the other.

Yes, he is a dirty cheating jerk, but how can a man that hires a protitute be put in the same group as a person that has marital issues that has a lover. One usually incudes a more emotional, a more human, attachment. I find these articles sickening, when did all mistresses become prostitutes and all people that cheat become Jons. Can we cover what would drive a person to turn to prostitution instead of delving into the "biological" need of successfull men to be "untrue" to their spouses?

Comment: Answer to your question: How can a man that hires a prostitute be put in the same group as a person that has marital issues that has a lover"

A man hiring a prostitute (and in this case he hired this particular prostitute for more than one occasion) is no different than a man with a lover if that man with the lover is also providing for that lover. What's the difference between giving a prostitute $4300 and a man buying his lover a diamond necklace or paying some of the utilities of her housing? Its seems in these occasions he's trying to buy her love

Comment: What really scares me is that no man will ever admit he has cheated unless he is confronted with the question, either by their spouse, or another loved one. I have cheated, but have not, since 1984, when I was 19.
That does not mean that I am a better man, than most. I just got tired of all the 'What happens if' scenario, and such. I know it did give me a mean rush cheating then, and when that night ended, whether or not she was my steady , I was looking for the next 'hitch in my belt''. I also noted that when the tables were turned, it hurt me beyond belief. I did not want to ever hurt another woman like I was hurt. Give this guy a break. He resigned, told the truth to his wife, and hopefully he is going to try and get some help, somewhere...

If you want to know why well here it is! It???s because he wanted too! Big shocker there right? At the time it felt damn good but now not so much. Now he's got to deal with it. The hurt that he has caused his "loved one??? is now with he has to deal with it. This is not a product of evolution no this is the product of devolution the process of becoming less than that which you were! Before he cheated he was a Man now he is lower than an amoeba.
And why is it when someone cast an ounce of their belief or faith out in the open they are immediately casted as a ZEALOT???. J.T. WTF is that about, man? Are the Crusades and Inquisition still going on here? The one thing I dislike more than OVER-religious windbags is intolerant hate-mongers that attack people of any faith.
It???s true if he was truly as devout as his pious persona portrays himself then he would not have done what he did. DUH! But you know what he did it and in his faith he CAN find forgiveness, if he really wants to. But for his wife and kids that will take more time heck, maybe never
Instead of mocking the foolishness let at least we should grow wiser from it and check ourselves. Let???s learn from the hurt and toll that this mess has caused his family. It so easy to point fingers but it more worthwhile to learn from what he???s going thought instead of treading that same lowly path ourselves all the while pointing fingers at other short comings and not facing our vices and traps lying in wait to ensnare us. People don???t cheat because it a product of their DNA they do it to fulfill a need not meet by their spouse. These needs are often an infantile excuses too meant to justify inexcusable behavior.
So protect yourself fulfill the needs of your spouse talk about this kind of stuff openly and freely and maybe just maybe your connection will grow past temporal gratification if you make them feel more than loved I???m certain it will curb any latent desire to cheat because you will fill more gratification in the love they give you back. Marriages don???t ruin themselves people ruin them when they care more about themselves then there spouse???s well-being.

Comment: Why do politicians get married? Because the public does not view them as worthy political material if these guys are not settled down w/ children. Most of these politicians have trophy wives & children to win elections when truthfully the don't really want to be married & be monogamous. If they stayed single their political careers would never take off the way they have. Bachelor politicians are never seen as acceptable by the voting public who find marriage and family more endearing. No one would vote for the honest guy who runs for office who admits to not wanting to be married and admits to not wanting children even if he is tuff on crime and would have a positive impact on society. He would have to be married to make a difference. Or so the voting public thinks. Single men can't possibly make a positive impact on society.. oh no. (sarcasm) (This opinion is coming from a woman who find fault in hypocrisy but no fault in testosterone filled men who want to be politicians and want and like sex)

Comment: 1. Look it???s very simple, the more drive a man has in life and by that I mean a drive to succeed, the higher his sex drive will be.

    2. Basic animal instincts. We observe in the animal kingdom that the fittest and biggest males have more females to mate with. So what makes it so much different with humans? Nothing!

    3. Passion, passion in relationships eventually dies; as a result, most romantic relationship eventually becomes plutonic. Sex to men is more than a means of pleasure; it???s one of the few ways for us to express ourselves emotionally. A woman???s bond to her mate is based on the EMOTIONAL connection, while a man???s bond to his mate is PHYSICAL.

So then why not just remain single and live the life of a bachelor? Well many answers there and I want to keep this short. But one reason is work. A married man is seen as being more grounded. How many single politicians do you see today? This is not to say that it???s the only reason why the Governor got married.

Last note, why use a high priced escort. Simple, anonymity! I???m certain the governor loves his wife. This might sound bad but if he didn???t he would have been much more blatant about cheating. I???m certain that he cares more about what his wife thinks of him than anybody else.

Comment: Oh yeah...let's pull out the old Evolutionary "alpha male" bit of bunk to explain why Spitzer was writing checks for chics. Surely, you say, Spitzer went spastic with all that governatorial power. He could snap his fingers and an erotic genie-in-a-bottle would pop out to eagerly grant his every carnal wish. Give me a break! We don't need to dig up Darwin or consult a list of psychologists with books to sell to figure this out. Spitzer had a powerful drive, not to express his "manhood," but to have his manhood affirmed. It's one thing to have a corner office and a catered lunch everyday. It's quite another to feel, to know, that you're an attractive, viable man...in the bedroom. What gets us men into trouble is the accompanied need for pleasure and release...a woman's blessing, if you will, on our masculinity. Sorry, but a hug and a kiss at bedtime don't cut the mustard for very long. I could almost guarantee you that Spitzer's wife hadn't "affirmed" his manhood in a genuine manner for a long time when he first paid for it. His "lady of the night" likely initiated their first encounter by acting flirtatious, and what man wouldn't enjoy the attentions of a beautiful, young woman who is pretending to like him...a lot? Spitzer should have communicated with his wife, worked at bringing the romance back, even gotten counseling. No, he wasn't hoping to get caught. He would've chosen a secretary or baby sitter for that. The fact is, men need accountability, friends to give them advice and help them work out their personal issues before it comes to dangerous behavior. Unfortunately, Spitzer tried to pay for anonymity instead.

Comment: I love that comment about female politicians not getting caught in sex scandals because of being limited in the number of children they can have. That is classic.

Most female politicians you can think of off the top of your head are well past menopause anyway...I don't think children are the issue, nor do I think most people understand the female sex drive. Women are far more sexualized than men, we are just more limited in the avenues socially acceptable for expressing it. It gets restricted, even becomes transactional in some relationships...which is a shame.

I think most female politicians would be able to assess that risk pretty well and pass on it if they were so inclined, mostly because of maturity (hence more impulse control and ability to retain the big picture even while under the addictive influence of power) and the fact that if you are in a role of power not usually held by one of your class/race/gender, you tend to be less reckless with that so you don't screw it up for everyone following you.

Incidentally, the whole "men programmed to have many partners while women stay monogamous" thing doesn't suit the times anymore; we needed to procreate explosively in the eras of harems and polygamy, but now we are overpopulated. It actually makes more sense for women to have multiple partners now, with many men faithful to just one woman--who is, as mentioned, limited in the number of children she can have, so explosive breeding would be physically impossible. Put ten men to every woman, you'll achieve population zero within the century. It will also give a whole new meaning to a "woman's right to choose"...

These gals will get pagers and when duty calls...the big man in office can take his MWG (minimum wage girl) to the govt subsidized motel 6 . This will save the tax payers boatloads of money that seems to be wasted anyways yearly by some of our <cough> law abiding leaders <chortle>
.....All silliness aside....why aren't both of these lawbreakers arrested by now? (hooker and ex-gov?)

Why try to justify the man's obviously callous, stupid, lascivious, and selfish behavior with "scientific" rhetoric? Just call a joker, a joker!!! He didn't just find "multiple partners because he wanted to "spread his genes"/procreate, as the writer strangely suggests, he sought out prostitutes, "upper-class"-pricey, albeit . How abou applying a term that can subsume all the journalistic gibberish and pandering : try immoral. (He could have tried sky-diving, right??? Or, how about crab fishing???? Comment: I've spent a few minutes reading the comments and all the back and forth. The journalist set out to answer the question, "Why do powerful men risk everything for sex?" She spoke with people she believed were experts in the field and the resulting article is what she came up with. I don't think she's trying to justify Spitzer's behavior.

The mindset of some commentes used to frustrate me when I was a journalist. No matter how hard I tried to write a story based on facts I gathered. I was villified by someone who didn't like the that the facts didn't fit their beliefs. Some people are simply closed-minded. The article is what it is, to use the cliche'. Get over it.

There is no such thing as Evil anymore. People are not Evil, they are just misunderstood, victims of their own circumstances.

If he would have been reading the Bible and learning Godly principals every morning, instead of thinking of getting his mojo working, he would not be in the predicament that his is now in.
In a world that pushes Homosexuality, Homosexual Marriage and Anal Sex as a normal life style, what do you expect? Half of the Senators and Congressmen are perverts and deviants. No Wisdom, ungodly people, makes for ungodly decisions. The Liberal Socialist Left News Media and the socialist plants in our government are undermining this Country one brick at a time. You turn your back on the Ten Commandments and Godly Principal, you take prayer out of the schools, no, you ban Prayer and Bibles from the schools. You teach that everyone has their own morality and there is no right or wrong. You say there is no difference between Man and Woman. You completely turn your backs on God???s plan for our lives, what the Hell do you think it???s going to produce?

School killings, mass murders and perverts and the ungodly running the country!

Comment: Ksize is exactly right. Women of today have to realize that if they don't satisfy there spouse/boyfriend then they will cheat. Society has to realize that our lives are on a short hr glass and we as humans don't have time to waste in relationships that don't hold water. I happen to work in a field of racing and i talk to alot of men from across the country. The stories are always the same, wife ain't putting out so i'm gonna go chase some tail. On the reverse side to this story though men can't expect to get anything from their wives if the are being emotionally or physically abused. This is a global epidemic. We as males have a duty to protect our women and children not abuse them. This cause and effect sinerio is causing women to reserve their sexual desire's. Women it's simple If your man takes care of you, take care of your man. It's only sex. There are moments that will be more intimate than others.

As for the media, man oh man are ya'll totally F-ing up the nation or what. All these media organizations across the country praise negitivity. All the media discusses is negitive behavior. Doesn't everyone realize that we live in a world that is driven by TV and radio. Everything every one knows about the world is learned for TV and Radio. So if the nations media portrays negitivity, that keeps people in a negitive state of thought. It doesn't take a genious to figure that out. For example: Gang violence, people join gangs to feel exceptence. They need attention from their peers. So what happens when you display their crime on TV. You acknowledged them. Now they feel good, so their gonna do it some more. We all know you have to BS america to keep your jobs but at least use your BEAN and think about cause and effect cause its destroying this once fine nation.

Comment: Don't you think it's time to stop making excuses for wrong behavior? It's funny how both science and God were managed to be placed in the same article. Science gives the explanation why it's ok, and then there is an appeal to God, "What do these people think, the rules don't apply to them?". Look, maybe there is some sort of hormonal problem, but that's not an excuse. What if this so-called thrill seeker got his kicks from killing women instead of having sex with them?? Would there still be this underlying argument about why it's ok?? Please. The more power one has, the more responsibility they have as well. It's time for people to stop blurring the lines of what's socially acceptible and what isn't. That's it...plain and simple.

I'm guessing that the murder victims in your scenario, unlike the prostitute, would not be willing participants...?

Also, the article supplied reasons, not excuses. You would do well to learn the difference.

Comment: Umm ever heard of Ted Bundy? He seduced women and then killed them...but that's not my point. My point was referring the the "thrill-seeker" persona. Different people have different scenarios that give them a thrill. Furthermore, the reasons are excuses...plain and simple. If someone has a disorder, they should get it treated. It doesn't give them free range to go and do whatever they feel like doing. God help us if we live in a society where everyone just does what they feel like and then pulls up some weak scientific argument to back it up. As far as my learning curve, why don't you discuss the topic like an adult instead of a teenager who's trying to pick fights on the internet.

        • Posted By: Dave in NM @ 03/17/2008 18:09:59

Comment: You still don't get the difference between a reason and an excuse. The article didn't make excuses for any behavior, period. If individuals want to USE the data cited in the article to make their OWN excuses, that's their prerogative (and utterly irrelevant here). Understanding why men are inclined to cheat is hardly a step toward the free-for-all society you're afraid of. The alternative is ignorance, which seems to be what you would prefer. Of course, you're going around posing baseless straw-man hypotheticals like a teenager picking fights on the Internet, then defending them with analogies even you admit don't hold water, so I guess your learning curve IS the issue. I didn't raise your idiotic argument about scientific evidence being "excuses," you did. If calling you on it makes me a teenager, well, then s0 B 1t, d00d.

This article is a great example of why I view psychology with such a huge amount of skepticism. It is a pseudoscience. I don't doubt that several generations from now we will look back amazed at what currently passes for "scientific" understanding of behavior. Psychology is the eugenics of our day and age. The "big lie" nowadays is that we are born a certain way and that people can't really change. The complete absence of any mention of choice or accountability in explaining this man's actions is frightening. Nonsense like this makes perpetrators into victims. I can't help but wonder, if I had an affair, how far I would get trying to excuse myself to my wife using this line of reasoning. "Gee honey, I'm really sorry but it's not my fault. Spitzer was netted in this scandal because of the domestic espionage that is taking place in this nation. Domestic espionage and a war on terror netted Elltiot Sptizer.

I am suprised George W. Bush has not labled Elltiot Spitzer an enemy combatant because Mr. Spitzer is a crime fighter and George W. Bush represents crime.

I would like someone to analyze the current political candidates to see if they are susceptable to the pull of an alpha male. We know McCain has enjoyed the fruit of a wandering eye (note I didn't say "heart" because infidelity isn't about it). How about Obama? He's quite charmastic, and having reached for lofty heights and succeeding might be too tempting for him. That leave plain, fooled-upon Hillary. The article said that women typically don't pursue dalliances because of biology. If that's the case, why not put a woman in office? She certainly would exhibit the mother-bear protective qualities. Educated very well, she'd have the smarts to make thought-out decisions that wouldn't be testostrones-driven. Recently I read somewhere that the one-child law in China is crumbling because elderly parents are discovering that their single offsprings exhibit self-centered traits. On top of that, elderly parents are beginning to see that daughters are more loyal, loving, and nurturing than male heirs. Chelsea has flown the coop, and now Hillary wants to extend the love, protection, energy to the nation.

She will never ever be accused of philandering as her male counterparts have. Look to the dowty leaders like Maggie Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth, and they are boring as hell as they maintained the front. Maybe she will dissemble HomeLand Security before it dissemble many lives.

Comment: yeah, i know, im a kid. my experience is completely irrelevant to this subject.. i sincerely apologize, i really just miss my best friend, not your problem though. sorry daplane for passing judgement on you, that was horrible

Comment: Now THAT is the kind of understanding and compassion I've come to expect from "committed devoted biblical Christians." Way to represent the Flock.

Comment: i just want to add one question here..is it wrong for a rich woman to have a sugar baby?? it's an absolutely extramarital relationship, but more and more services come out on Internet focusing on this kind of relationship, such as SugarmommaMatch.com. how do you think of such a thing?

    • Posted By: Dave in NM @ 03/14/2008 12:27:10

Comment: Same as for men. If hubby is OK with it, if it's not a breach of her promise to him, then great. Otherwise, it's strictly between those involved and should have NO effect on her professional pursuits, if any.

Comment: its "pikachurepurfekt", sorry for having an opinion, thanks for labeling me "too young" to think for myself, maybe you should come to trial and help put my ex best friend behind bars for three years?

Comment: PIKACHUREPUN forgive me. i can tell by your comments your not mature enough to dialogue. no problem. its my fault i thought u were older. again my apologies

Comment: PIKACHUREPUN facts can be substantiated. show some intelligence and stop making "claims" if u have "facts" post where those "facts" can be found OTHER than your rhetoric. is that too much to ask from an unlearned person?

Comment: Yeah, let's make an excuse for this guy being a ***!

It's not that he's a walking terd...it's his brain, folks!

Yeah, it's the lower levels of monoamine oxidase in my brain that made me spend $80,000 on $4,000 an hookers!

"You forgive me now, right? Sweetheart? You forgive me...right?"

    I LOVE IT!

Comment: PIKACHUREPUN one doesnt have to be a christian to enjoy a marital, monogamous sexual relationship.
dont get foolish. embracing Christ reconciles one back to God and removes the penalty of sin from u.
it may make u appreciate your relationship more but if so its just a residual effect.
Im a committed devoted biblical Christian yet i hate it when ignorant so-called Christians make sex "christian"

Comment: One beholden to a non-humanistic worldview can make excuses for anything.
