    GREAT article!

Comment: Great article, worthy point of view. Needed to be said. A righteous man is embarrassed and brought low by... paying for sex. Paying for sex. Oh, and breaking a law because his partner crossed a state line. A law against crossing a state line for sex. Wow, let's take up alot of our public time and attention on this case.
Let's not. He violated public trust and a couple minor laws against society. Now can we focus on all the real ills that plague us? Such as rising oceans due to global warming, millions of high school dropouts each year, nuclear proliferation among countries that are just a little unstable internally, our dependence on oil, and about a dozen others our elected representatives have not focused on successfully. Apparently it's all because a few of them are leaving the office early to go pay for sex. Yeah, that's the cause of all our problems.

Does anybody know if Elliot is in treatment for Sexual Addiction? How about Silda and their children? Are they seeing someone who can help them heal, that understands Sexual Addiction, from betrayal and humiliation? Does anyone at "Wag the Dog Newsweek" know, or remotely care?

For us regular folks out here who work bloody hard to stow away and invest every last cent, after college loan repayments and whatever else, and are financially impacted by the indiscretions and discriminations on Wall St., your article represents our views.

Comment: An attorney General need not walk at the level trodden by the crowd but to the extent that Spintzer destroyed also innocent human lives - the families of the people involved- was not only inappropriate but inhuman in the court of decency. That was his flaw of character. That he went after the sex houses and not the girls or the Johns' simply reveals the way he ubderstood the nature of that businees. It was not the sex that was immoral as much as the bordellos which were living the avails of prostitution. They were trading in human flesh, in human decency. Let us not rejoice the fall of this man because we would be no better.

    DEMOCRATS, DON'T LET SPITZER RESIGN!!!

    Comment: Part 1/3

The Letter below was originally sent to MSNBC and Newsweek with the request, ???Please give the people of New York a voice and publish this immediately!!! The Media is not giving the governor a fair trial in the court of public opinion!!!??? The article above and this discussion section appeared yesterday afternoon.

I thank Newsweek very much for publishing the article above and for providing this discussion section where I can post this letter. I also thank Daniel Gross for writing the article. Well done. I???d tell you to do another and take it further.

The full letter that I sent starts below and continues, due to size limitations, with parts 2 and 3. I have no idea what role it played in the posting of the above article, if any. At least this discussion section does, technically, ???give the people a voice???.

I am posting this letter because I believe that the Democrats should be defending Spitzer against the Republicans and refuse his resignation. I am not a Republican or a Democrat, but the Republicans of New York, by cheering the downfall of Spitzer, as they cheer the downfall of a man that has stood up to defend the people against corruption on Wall Street and in government, have revealed themselves to be in favor of corruption. New York, remember those who cheered today... remember who is be happy that they may no longer have to fear getting caught!

    ---

    ATTENTION NEW YORK!!!

STOP AND THINK BEFORE YOU LYNCH!!!

THIS ATTACK ON THE GOVERNOR IS A POLITICAL TRICK!!!

Yes, Eliot Spitzer is an unforgiving hypocritical fool. He has been accused of doing that crime which he had previously pursued relentlessly. Granted.

However, let us examine, for just a second, who it is we're attacking and who it is that???s now attacking him.

OK. I???m like most of you. I didn???t know either. I had to use the Internet to find out.

Eliot Spitzer has taken on cases that other Attorney Generals wouldn???t touch. If you mess with those in power and slip up, you risk your life being demolished??? and that???s what???s happening. He looks stupid and those who are afraid of him have the opportunity to demolish him.

He rescued $50 million owed to musicians from record labels??? remember??? the guys who went after your kids for stealing from them. Talk about hypocrisy!

He also stopped the practice of allowing those record companies to control what songs were played on the radio and how often they were played, a practice known as ???payola???.

He went after computer chip manufacturers for the illegal act of price fixing. No competition means potentially higher prices for you, the consumer. As for those Republicans out there reading this, that would likely have meant higher prices on computers for you guys also.

He went after companies for inflating the price of their stocks. Ten firms, all well known firms, paid fines to settle the case. This eventually led to changes, among which would includes rules that protect brokerage firms against pressur

  • Posted By: PoliticalResponder @ 03/14/2008 4:19:50 AM

    Comment: Part 2/3

He stopped the practice of ???late trading???, where hedge funds were allowed to make trades after hours that you, the average investor, couldn???t do. He prevented privileged investors from ???market timing???, where they could trade more often than allowed under fund rules.

An insurance investigation that he started led to similar investigations in other states. One of these other investigations, against firms based in Chicago, may have been the practice of "steering". Apparently, clients of insurance companies were being ???steered??? into buying policies that would be more beneficial for the brokerage firms due to higher commissions.

An investigation that he started ended the Gambino Family???s control of the trucking and garment industry.

He went after a police department in the Town of Walkill for petty corruption, civil liberties violations and harassment. Who do you think they were probably harassing, dogs and cats?

Now, who???s threatening to impeach him? The Republicans! They need the Democratic party???s support to impeach him and they???ll probably get it because you, the people, are ignorant of the facts and if the Democrats don???t go along, you???ll get angry at them for protecting this hypocrite.

I don???t know the governor personally. Actually, I kept forgetting the name of the guy who became governor of New York after Pataki, though I remember Spitzer???s name well from his campaigns.

However, it seems to me that the Republicans are trying to replace a guy that you, the people of New York, overwhelmingly supported in the previous election so that they can face a weaker guy the next time around. Don???t fall for it!!!

This is not coming from a Democrat. This is not coming from a Republican.

This is coming from someone who is simply tired of watching the public react to what the media says without first doing their own analysis of the issues. This morning, I heard two people laughing at Spitzer???s hypocrisy, but completely not understanding the ???hypocritical part??? of this whole mess.

Eliot Spitzer went after 2 prostitution rings when he was Attorney General. Now, he has been caught hiring a prostitute. That is why he is a hypocrite.

This morning, he apologized to his family and said that this was a private matter, in accordance with the typical ???script??? that anyone in his situation would state. See MSNBC???s article about this ???script???.

However, Eliot Spitzer does not owe you, the people, an apology. He does not owe the government an apology. What does his having sex have anything to do with you? Statistics seem to indicate that you, the people, are just as bad when it comes to such matters. Talk about hypocrites!

However, he owes the prostitution rings that he went after an apology... not because they were right and he was wrong??? prostitution is not the issue??? he owes them an apology simply for holding them to a higher standard than he holds himself.

    NEW YORK??? BACK OFF!!!

    Comment: Part 3/3

Whether or not Governor Eliot Spitzer is prosecuted for this crime is in the hands of the current Attorney General. Eliot Spitzer may be a hypocritical fool, but he???s foolish enough to challenge those in power that you likely couldn???t without someone like him. A deal may involve his resignation in exchange for no further prosecution.

Let the government know that you want neither??? not because Spitzer deserves a pardon, but because trying him for this crime would be a hypocritical act on the part of New York, as such crimes are rarely prosecuted in this state, and because this is someone who is fighting for YOU.

Impeaching him would send a message to future Attorney Generals that they should not prosecute because it may later come back at them. Every Attorney General is at risk of being considered ???self righteous??? at some point in the future. Yes, we all feel more comfortable with defense Attorneys, but it???s the prosecutors who are protecting your lives and your wealth from criminals, whether they happen to be blue collar or white collar. It is the Attorney General that upholds the law in this state.

The accusations are that it is now impossible for him to fulfill his role as governor. However, that wouldn???t be his fault. That would only be true as long as the government we elected refuse to work with the governor we elected. It would be their fault.

Yes, he may lose himself on those days when he feels power hungry. Yes, he may be self righteous. As I keep saying, he???s a hypocritical fool.

However, he???s a power hungry self righteous fool that???s fighting against the other power hungry self righteous fools in government for you, the people of New York!

(I thank Wikipedia for much of this information. However, Wikipedia lacks sufficient citation for some of these ???facts???. Since Wikipedia claims to have more accurate information on heavily trafficked articles and it is clear that the current scandal has already been added to the page and the scandal???s popularity in the last 24 hours has been significant, the page???s information is likely to be heavily trafficked and sufficiently updated. However, since my whole point is that you people should at least take a second to do your own research anyway before destroying this man???s life, feel free to do your own research to get the facts straight. I???m acting in favor of Spitzer only because I feel that the people of New York are being blindly led by the powerful entities that fear him. It???s not a conspiracy. It???s simply political opportunism??? in so many ways. This is not about Spitzer. It???s about political power. There???s a power struggle going on here and all the people see is a sex scandal.)

Comment: What's sickening is that Spitzer was having sex with girls just a few years older than his eldest daughter. That is sick. That is not normal. There is something psychologically wrong with this man and I'm nervous that we even had him in power in the first place.

Please pray for Sildad and her daughters. Their lives are shattered forever and they will probably never trust a man - how can they trust their father? - ever again.

Not so Hillary's husband, the perpetually red-faced oaf the ethically challenged wing of the Democratic Party wants to return to the White House.

Comment: I am unclear why Spitzer needed to resign. In an office of public trust, it is irrelevant how he deals with his sexual life. Would a governor have to resign for jumping a red light, which is arguably more serious for the public and puts others at risk? Clinton didnt resign for obviously (in my eyes) lying in court. Spitzer was doing a lot of good and putting fear in the minds of people who thought that they could get away with anything... pity he will no longer be serving

Comment: I like Spitzer...he has done alot of great things. We are losing good ppl because we can't help but to bud into their personal lives. Who the hell cares about his sexual behavior? How does that completely erase the good things he has done as a govenor? I don't get it. Same as Bill Clinton..he was a great President. Look, we push this "ideal" relationshp on our political figures... they have to be married, or they don't fit the criteria. So, what do we expect, of course not all of them want to be married, but they must fit the presidential image. That's not fair...does that mean that a gay man could never be president because he can't be married. That is simply discriminatory...the very thing our constitution stands against.

Would Spitzer have been fine if he just had an affair with a regular girl? No. Look at all the other past political figures who had affairs and were then forced to resign.
Just because the US believes so strongly that sex is only permitted within marraige does not mean everyone else shares that view. I mean...some ppl don;t even believe in the institution of marriage. The reason why ppl are so shocked is because they believe they can stick ppl in these strict roles. They believe everyone must share the same views, beliefs and morals. Some ppl don't place the same value on sex and sexual behavior...so why do we impose our values on others and then act shocked when we discover that they have there own way of thinking.
    I'm mean HELLO.

Also, ppl having been cheating forever...especially rich and powerful men who can afford the best looking ladies...
I bet you have cheated before to..yah...YOU.
But nobody has to know that you also have your own sexual behavior. You present the status quo image of being in a perfect married relationship.
All I am saying is we should not worry about what is going on in the bedroom of our politicians. (AS LONG AS THEY AREN'T USING GOV MONEY).
If they prefer sex outside of marraige, that is their OWN PERSON sexual behavior tendency and know one has to agree with it, but that does not undermine who they are as brilliant, and able politicians. If they prefer to have sex with other men- same thing goes. If they prefer to have sex with their wife and another women...same things goes. It is a persoanl matter. MYOB!
And if you find that you can't help but bud into their business...fine, whatever, but don't even try to say that they are deserving of impeachment because that is simply not the case.

Comment: A blogger named Edson writes "Did the word Democrat really come from democracy?"

Here is a derivation of the words "Democrat" and "Republican."

The United States of America is a republic, that is to say, a Federal government in which the people are represented by elected officials from the various states. Before we were a republic, we were a democracy made up of 13 individual states that were not united. A democracy is a form of government where the individual citizens have the right to speak their minds and influence the political discourse. Democracy was named after Demosthenes, a citizen of ancient Greece with a speech impediment who practiced talking with his mouth full of pebbles to overcome his disability. Demosthenes later became a great political orator. This is where the Democrats derive their name.

The original Republicans were in favor of the states joining to form a republic (which is how that party got it's name). The original Democrats were opposed to this idea, they represented the individual states and were worried that the republic could gain too much power over the states, and through the exercise of tyranny, deny individuals their freedom. Trust me, people were pretty passionate about their liberty in those days, having just fought for independence from England. The Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were all hammered out by serious-minded men who sought to balance the need for individual freedom with our shared common cause, the needs for united strength and social order. Balancing the rights of the individual against the rights of the whole society is what America is all about. This is not only a great achievement for our nation, it is one of the greatest achievements of mankind. And we have, by and large, been true to our ideals over the past 227 years. The system of government we initially established, although needing occasional revisions, has stood the test of time.

Let's not forget where we started from, that impulse towards equality and freedom.

America is, with all it's faults, a meritocracy. Most of our founding fathers would never have had a voice in the 18th century English government they rebelled against, a monarchy where you had to be born into power. In America it was different. If you had intelligence, passion, ambition, drive, talent and a little luck, you could change the world.

This is the real secret to Obama's popularity. This is why a white, conservative middle-aged female Republican like me wants to vote for him. He's got that blend of intelligence, passion, ambition, drive and talent. I'm giving him my vote to proffer him the last ingredient, a little luck, so I can watch our Republican Democracy in action, and once again change the world.

    IN GOD WE TRUST

Comment: Obama has said very little about what he would do as President. He seems to thrive on the appearance of being Black, although he is of mixed parentage. This seems to me to be a very bad way of electing a President to help us undo the insanity of the past two administrations.

Comment: A democracy is ruled by the majority, much like Greece or Rome, the majority can destroy itself. A republic is ruled by laws, and a republic can be a monarchy or a dictatorship. We have a combination because the majority elect those who make the laws.

Comment: very well reasoned comment. ironic is it not that we have yet, as a nation, resolved the states rights v. fed powers fight. the players have changed teams. yet the fight continues. but the continuing disconnect between the people and their reps is troubling. government seems by turn either to small or to big to respond to the most basic of it's duty's.
