Comment: For example, traditional Tibetan festivals, including the Tibetan New Year and the Shoton Festival, are legal holidays in the autonomous region.

People in Tibet work 35 hours a week, five hours less than the national legal working hours.

Xerab Nyi'ma said, during the March 14 riot, the government showed restraint, provided free medical treatment to the injured, and paid compensation to the victims. All of these showed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to human rights.

Comment: The per capita net income of farmers and herdsmen in Tibet posted double-digit growth for a fifth consecutive year and reached 2,788 yuan in 2007, up 83.8 percent over 2002.

A total of 8.22 billion yuan was allocated for education in Tibet in past five years. More than 95 percent of school-age children now have access to primary education, in sharp contrast with the figure that 95 percent of Tibetans were illiterate before the Democratic Reform of Tibet in 1959.

According to the provincial health department, 100 percent of farmers and herders, who account for 80 percent of the region's population, are covered by the medicare system and receive free medical care.

Xerab Nyi'ma said that the implementation of the system of regional ethnic autonomy in Tibet also helped protect human rights.

Comment: A document in the Tibet Autonomous Region Archives, written in 1949, states that three monks, who were slaves for upper-class monks, escaped from Sera Monastery due to oppression. They were caught and thrown into prison with their eyes being gouged and noses cut off.

Another document recorded that in the past, goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths and butchers were considered lower-class people, who were not allowed to work for the government or marry upper-class people.

According to statistics, about 90 percent people in Tibet didn't have their own houses in 1950.

In 2006, the regional government launched a program to build homes for local farming and herding households. More than 570,000people have since moved into new residences and regional government spending has totaled 1.3 billion yuan.

Comment: Xerab Nyi'ma, the vice president of the Central University for Nationalities and himself a Tibetan, said that as recently as the first half of the 20th century, Tibet remained a society of feudal serfdom under theocracy, one even darker and more backward than medieval Europe.

The ecclesiastical and secular serf owners, though accounting for less than 5 percent of the population of Tibet, controlled the personal freedom of the serfs and slaves who made up more than 95 percent of the population of Tibet. Owners sold, mortgaged and bartered serfs as just one more kind of property, he said.

Comment: Why is the Dalai Lama given so much importance , particularly in the USA ?
He is always received as a head of State , visiting the White House and the US Congress . Why ?
Actually he is a very minor figure in the world scene . He only represent a very small minority of Tibetans monks who are mainly in exile . He is certainly not the ??? Pope ??? of Buddhist . -

Why is Nancy Pelosi went out of her way into the back country of India , to meet the Dalai Lama ? What did she has to gain by it , and who is the lobby behind it ?

It's time you wondered why after 49 years of communist occupation of their land, you have not gained their 'gratitude' or their allegiance. Comment: Dear Spengler,
An ungrateful group of Buddhist monks are rebelling in a distant province of my country. I have done my best to deal with the matter quietly, but they have managed to get the leaders of Western countries involved. What should I do?
    Bothered in Beijing

    Dear Bothered,
You might apply Spengler's Iron Law of History: stick around long enough, and you turn into a theme park. The province in question has an ancient and colorful culture with a devoted Western following among spiritual tourists, including a number of prominent Hollywood actors. It appeals to Western nostalgia for a non-existent past far from the anxieties of modern life. You can't afford to allow a province to secede, of course. Why not change the name of the provincial capital to "Shangri-La" and say that it isn't a province at all, but only a theme park? No one cares about a rebel theme park. Let the monks run the place, and give them the gate receipts as well as the food and beverage concession. They can spin their prayer wheels all day and get paid for it.

It's all about money, after all. As Abraham Lustgarten wrote of your rebels in the Washington Post on March 23, "Their culture has been packaged for tourism. Business is booming. But they aren't getting any of the bounty. This, more than violations of human rights and religious freedom, is what fueled the riots."

It may seem outrageous to turn a substantial chunk of territory over to an amusement park, but the idea has been floated before, of all places in the United States. New York Times columnist Nicholas D Kristof proposed to turn part of 10 American states into a theme park called "Buffalo Commons", thus "rescuing the rural Great Plains by returning much of it to a vast Buffalo Commons. The result would be the world's largest nature park, drawing tourists from all over the world to see parts of 10 states alive again with buffalo, elk, grizzlies and wolves" (October 29, 2003). That was before the boom in wheat prices, of course. Farming pays better than tourism these days. Still, if Americans can take seriously the idea of turning North Dakota into a Wild West theme park, they hardly can object to the same treatment for the province in question.

There is no shame in running a theme park. Some of my favorite cities have been theme parks for quite some time, for example Venice, the Las Vegas of the 17th century, or Vienna, where instead of Mickey and Goofy, you meet Mozart and Maria Theresa. That appears to be the main function of the British monarchy after the Diana business.

The monks do not practice a religion so much as a sort of folkloric animism that is out of place in the modern world. That is what makes them appear so charming to the spiritual tourists of the West. Attractions of this sort aren't rational, and there is no point arguing about it. Give the tourists and the monks what they want, and promote the exchange of currency for a spiritual frisson.

Comment: The Olympic torch was lit today in China, but it isn't the torch the Chinese people wanted. Their torch was held aloft by their Statue of Liberty, the one that they built. That torch was torn down, and the people were attacked and killed or jailed by the "People's" army in Tiananmen square in 1989. Young adults in China today know nothing of this, because the Chinese government propaganda machine has vilified the patriots who demonstrated for freedom that day, and dismissed them as a few anti-social hooligans. This process is, of course, taking place today in China, only it is currently directed against the Tibetan demonstrators. If the Tiananmen Square demonstrators had been successful in reforming the Chinese government, I doubt if there would have been the demonstrations in Tibet, because the people of Tibet would probably have had far fewer grievances.

  • Posted By: marvinhan @ 03/30/2008 2:14:55 PM

Comment: Dalai Lama is the ringleader of all riots in Tibet. He claims to be a peacemaker but he is a pure troublemaker. If he practices Buddism, does he know what Budha used to push for? non-violence and restraint!!! But behold, watch what this man did. What he says and what he does simply dont' agree at all!!!He is nothing but a liar. He is always portrayed as the spiritual leader but he never does anything for the Tibetans. Do you know what he used to do before he fled to India? The unhumane and barbatic serfdom. Did serfs have any access to human rights? Surely not. But now go to Lhasa and take a look with your own eyes. So many Tibetans are enjoying a peaceful and free life there. Do people have abosolute religious freedom? It may vary from country to country. After all, Tibet has undergone tens of millions of changes after its return to the Communist leadership.
Tibtans can have as many children as possible but may not pay the penalty for breaking the tight birthcontroal policy. But it's not the case with ethnic Chinese people. They have to pay a heavey penalty as a result.
I am not a fan of Chinese government but I know I have to make a conclusion based on the facts not on my illusions.

If I were Chinese leader, I would tell them to shove it. Take Olympics away and see whether China will perish.

Comment: C-span showed the video of the rioters' deadly rampage. I could not believe my eyes to see a Tibetan doctor's left eye was gauged out by the rioter and his left ear cut off too. Are these the acts of a peaceful religious people? Yet there is no condemnation whatsoever for this grusome barbarity. Instead the police who tried to stop this rampage of killing is being condemned by the western media. What would Pelosi do if the natives in American go on a rampage of killing like the one carried out by the Tibetan rioters? Just allow them do whatever they want and let the innocent people get killed?

Comment: It is really strange that the world would condemn China for cracking down on criminals mutilating, setting fire and killing ordinary people including Tibetans themselves in a mad rampage. What would Americans do if the natives run around burning and killing? The video shown on c-span is just horrifying. The rioters burned people to death, cut off ear and gauge out eyes with knives. Would Pelosi condemn American police for stopping them?

Comment: I don't understand why the Chinese police don't open fire on those so called peaceful protesters, they run out on the streets beating up innocent people, burning and killing. Today I saw on TV a man got beat up on a street, he fell on the ground and died, that's enough. I'm a Chinese, I strongly urge the Chinese government has to shoot those criminals if necessary, McCain and other Americans go to hell, we don't care.

    1. they don't believe Jesus Christ

    5. They have affinity to Hollywood retards and pot-smoking new-age crowd
    6. They don't need bathing and showering
    7. They do badly in school anywhere on earth
    8. They are living fossil of medieval time

Comment: "If freedom loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China and the Chinese in Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak out on human rights," Pelosi said before a crowd of thousands of cheering Tibetans, including monks and schoolchildren.

Ms Pelosi's blatant racism towards people of China is mind boggling. People's Republic of China offers freedom to her citizens to recide in any part of the country. Ms Pelosi, as House Speaker of the USA, comes to Asia with the mindset of her own country where native Americans were rounded up and relocated to the reservations. Ms Pelosi seems to have a hardtime understanding a nation where ethnic groups are not bound by provinces. Freedom of movement has been and will be the cornerstone of the nation.

Ms Pelosi also seems to not understand, people of China have never and and will never go to Tibet under the slogan of "The Only Good Tibetan is a Dead Tibetan". People of all ethnicities live side by side in Tibet for better lives. Ms Pelosi can move out of the shadow casted by her own colonist or Italina immigrat forefathers and take a better view of the world with new understanding.

Comment: We Chinese love peace and harmony. what if this riot happened in US, or In Britain? should your police do nothing to maintain the social security and stopped the unrestness? Chinese government had stated its position clearly that willing to have a talk with Dala Lama as long as he admits tibet is part of China. Chinese Permier Wen Jiabao said"As to your second question, we have reiterated in a very serious manner that as long as the Dalai Lama abandons his independence agenda, recognizes that Tibet is an inalienable part of China's territory and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and stops separatist and sabotage activities, our door for dialogue with him will be wide open. This is what we proposed and this position has remained unchanged. However, what has happened recently has exposed Dalai's hypocrisy. Even so, I would like to use this occasion to reiterate that our original position remains unchanged and we mean what we say. What is important now is what steps Dalai takes. Comment: Banning Olympic Games is the abusing of the human rights of all the athletes sweating years to prepare for the events and it may be just a 1-time-1-life matter.

IT'S a SHAME of you all to even think about that.

Comment: The Chinese government is guilty of countless crimes against humanity and human rights. If you wish to know more, simply google "chinese concetration camps" and you will find numerous articles from various news sources, including the BBC, and CNN, documenting the Chinese practice of torture, and yes, even illegal organ harvesting from its victims. The oppression and torture of Tibetans is yet another crime to add to China's growing list. I personally have a brother-in-law from Tibet who was a prisoner in a Chinese labor camp for two years before he managed to escape and make his way to the U.S. I for one am all for boycotting anything that has to do with China, including the olympics. We have educated our children for years about the holocaust in order to prevent the same thing from happening again. Well, guess what folks. It's happening again.

Comment: The United States of America, together with other evil western countries, are committing all the sins you mentioned everyday, and what's worse, they are also lying everyday, which causes you to thiink like that. Poor you! Ask your brother-in-law about his detention, ok? Nobody in China will be be beaten up by cops in broad daylight on city streets just because of his colored skin, or suddenly be shot dead for no reason while studying in classroom . And try googling "US camp, rape", ok? I thiink you will sure have fresher discoveries about "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" . Hehe. Visit China, if you dare and care, you will find a quite different view from what you are brainwashed with everyday by BBC and CNN, or whatever other financier funded media. Good luck to you

Comment: Banning products made in China is indeed a responsible act; sanctions are used by the UN all the time in cases of human rights' abuse such as this.
A boycott of the Olympics is also fair game; all countries of the world should boycott the games.

  • Posted By: Juliancillo @ 03/17/2008 4:43:46 AM

Comment: Come on we're talking about international poltics! How much do human rights weigh before natural resources and country interests? And what does Tibet have to do with products made in China??? To ban Chinese products would be as inappropriate as the Chinese did with the Japanese products -- it's an act of ignorance, not bravery.

  • Posted By: tucanofulano @ 03/16/2008 9:19:08 PM

Comment: Millions of people world-wide (not governments, officially) have started an effort to curtail or at least reduce purchases of anything "Made In China" till at least 3 months after Tibet has joined the United Nations as a free, independent , sovereign nation (not a puppet of ANY other nation). This worthy, non-confrontational, "grass-roots" pacific and non-violent political and economic action reflecting the wishes of free peoples everywhere will have an enormous impact. Do the math: 5 Billion people spending about $10 LESS each month on "Made In China" products equals ??? (a lot each month). My family has decided to support this movement as best we can. How about you and yours? Help get and keep Tibet free by taking this political/economic action by cutting down or eliminating purchases of "Made In China" products and services.
