Comment: Wright's rantings are anti-Christian. His church is outside the realm of Bible-based teachings. But this should come as no surprise given the fact that he had an openly-gay choir director -Donlad Young - for more than a decade. However, Young was murdered in December 2007.

Obama has shown incredibly bad judgement over 20 long years. Why would his judgement as president be any better?
Comment: I am disappointed that yet again the media does not tell the full story of the sermons of Rev. Wright. You're happy to quote the hype, but still refuse to go further. I have listened to two of the full sermons and there is nothing hateful about them. In "The Day Jerusalem Fell" given after 9/11, Rev. Wright quoted former Amb. to Iraq Richard Peck who had stated on the previous day on Fox News "America's chickens have come home to roost." Rev. Wright called the attack a tragedy and told his congregation they should tell their loved one that they love them and that "violence begets violence," "hate begets hate" and "revenge begets revenge" and before we walk off that precipace we should consider that following that path would lead to the death of innocents. Pretty prophetic. In the sermon "Governments Are Not God," Wright stated God never changes, that God is always good, however, governments are not God and are not always good. And like, Rome, God damns governments when they are bad. But when governments are not bad, they should not be damned. Come on Newsweek - be responsible, print the full sermons so people can learn the truth and decide for themselves instead of perpetuating the lies.
Comment: I believe that we cannot chose our family, but we sure can chose friends, mentors AND ministers. When I - as a middle aged white woman - hears hate about my race spouted and that my race is totally responsible for the plight of another race...I am disturbed. I understand that only a small portion of Wright's sermons were heard, but what I heard makes me question why any educated and moral AMERICAN would want to sit and listen to more.
Comment: I don't know if I have ever read anything so vile as what the army ranger guy and the"Raven" have written here.I am also surprised that such language is allowed. These are definitely two people I would not want to EVER encounter on the street. Not only do they make untrue generalizations about people simply based on race, but they use filthy language to do so. I doubt the "raven" has even seen the inside of a church because lightning might strike her dead. Her hatred is scary and I doubt she has many loving relationships with that kind of meaness inside of her. As to the authors she has listed, I have read a number of them. I have some of their books on my shelves. I have even met Maya Angelou, who ,by the way, would never even think of speaking in such a vulgar and hateful manner. The Raven needs to read her Bible or meditate or pray to rid herself of her anger. This country does not need the kind of human beings that say such disgusting things about one another. I think army ranger guy and the raven could have some serious passion going on if they turned onto peace instead of hate. By the way, Maya Angelou has endorsed Hillary Clinton. That's because she is an intelligent woman who knows who the best candidate is for our nation's children. ALL of them.
Comment: We have to elect a President based on what he or she stands for. How do we know what that is? If they've been in political office for some time, we can look at their record. If, as in the case of Obama, there is little political history to look at, we look at his non-political life. Obama has stated that he turned to Rev. Wright for spirtual guidance for the last 20 years. Rev. Wright says "God damn America." Obama is not responsible for what Reverend Wright said. He is responsible for not taking the opportunity to totally distance himself from this devisive rhetoric. In not doing so, Obama does not represent change, but rather a return to the past. How sad.
Comment: And this preacher also preached about being kind and welcoming to others. He married interracial couples in his church. Yes, there are white members at Trinity, who love it there.
Comment: By the time a person is six years of age, 90% of their personality is set. Now, that's scientifically true.
So at 27, Obama would have already been a spiritual person before joining that particular church 20 years ago. Otherwise it would not have been possible. And this church is very popular and use to having important people there.
Comment: Personalities yes but not their beliefs. There is a big difference.
Comment: People are shaped my what the hear and see in the world. From the time we see our mothers face until the time we see God face we are being formed. Some where in the coarse of our lives we learn to be against people IE-If we have a older sibling -we are taught to share. Why are we taught to share? Because we do not want to see this person( our sibling ) being as worthy as us to have it. We -at that time- think our older sibling is mean to us. They(the older sibling ) takes away our toys,hits us and runs, makes fun of us ect...in other words -will not play with us. As we continue to grow we begin to see our siblings differently. We start by not hating them for being mean and we start liking them for being nice.

"HOW MY MENTORS TAUGHT ME"
I am a 50 year old white women . I remember when I was young I heard very negative things about the black race. My sister was older than me and attended high school. I remember my parents where afraid to let her go to school because riots would break out at the high school all the time. My sister graduated by the time I went to school about 6 years latter. Things had changed when I went to high school. I had many friends some white and some African American. The conversations in my home changed also. We learned that all people no matter what their race where was just trying to go to work and feed their family's. Most people not all -have learned to like each other and play well together. How many times have we heard the expression-I have a friend who is black or I have a fiend who is white or gay or ect. Well, some how by all our mentors in our life we were taught to get along.
There are some people who are never taught this and they continue to rage war against the races. White and African American alike. They are called bigots! I would never listen to a bigot.
There are some people who hate the gay community and we all know the the list go on and on.
Anger grows in the souls of some people and it begins when they are young.
If they listen to people like Rev.Wright-Know wonder this is so widespread in the African American people. If I had to sit and listen to my preacher tell me that the land that I live on and the people of my country hate me- I would be angry and stirred up also. When anyone is stirred up and have no outlet for it-it comes out in other ways. It would make my blood boil !!!
With this said-I believe there are wonderful preaches in every race -black white ,yellow ect...
I also believe most people go to church to come in peace with one another and to praise God.

If someone like Colin Powell was running that would be great but someone like Sen.Obama who had a man preach like this to him for 20 years and picked him for a spiritual adviser. We need a leader who wants to lead America and ALL HER RACE'S.

Barack would do himself a favor by disconnecting himself from that church. The business of a church is to preach the Gospel and not spurt out imflammatory remarks that will hurt people. It certainly did not good for the first black man to ever run for president - has instead ruined his chances entirely.

Comment: It has been some time ago, since I attended a black church, but al l these imflamatory remarks of Paster Wright was never spoken in the black churches I attended. I also wonder why Obama didn't attend white church or at least a mixed church since his mother was white. Also, there have been many changes in the U.S. in the past 50 or so years - he is old enough to see this - so why all this hate? I remember when so called black people could only be hired as servants in the motion picture industry , I remember when black were not featured on day time soaps, and when white and black couldn't even hug or kiss in movies, could certainly not do romantic scenes. Remember "Pinky" and others where a woman of color should have had the part but a white actress was cast, just because the scenes called for kissing a white man? Maybe not many of this generation remember, but I being an older person certainly do.
What about winning the Academy Awards - years ago such was not even thought of for a black person. and what about a black woman being Secretary of State? And there are many black mayors and some black governors now too. The blacks have come a long way in America - and those remarks of Paster Wright were uncalled for. There are absoluttely no country in this entire world where everything is perfect - where there is absolutley no race problems - racism is to some extent and always will be because it is part of human nature. As long as there are some people who stand up for just and progress is made - regardly of how slow there is really nothing to worry about. This is the Age of Aquarius remember - even the recent advent of so many mixed marriages - and the growing popularity of mixed race people is a sign that things are changing. Comment: Your article is very helpful during this time when so many of us are trying to understand Rev Wright, his church and how Obama relates to the man whose words have been played over and over during the past week.
Two days ago, while on the internet I stumbled on a video link that gave the entire post 9/11 sermon that contained some of the offensive words. I watched the entire video several times for it seems to convey an entirely different message than the clips offer ~ actually 180 degrees different and much more reassuring.
If you have not seen this fuller version, google "Rev Wright + Obama" ~ it should produce a list that includes a heading with the words "Right Wright" and a link to the video. I tell you as someone who appears frequently on Countdown, one program among many that has not talked at all about the video or the context in which some of the words playing over and over again during the week were said. Having seen the whole, I am much more at ease with his message that day for it was an important one based on the question to God: "How should we respond?". As he led his flock through the subsequent discussion one of the themes was that hate begets hate and that our response should be to search our own hearts.
I would say all this to Keith Olbermann but can't find his email address. Since you, happily for me appear as his guest fairly often, I burden you with the question and perhaps even a response. My email address is on file as one of Newsweek's members and subscribers.

Comment: RAVEN i did attack you first. I too would like a truce. Only twice in my life have I felt a hatred for blacks.And if you hear me out , you might understand. In 1962 I was a 6 year old boy. My family was dirt poor. One day my 8 year old broyher and I earnd a dollar apeice for helping a neighbor pull weeds from her garden.This was the first time in my life I had ever had a dollar bill. After we were paid, we decided to ride our bikes to the store to buy candy. We lived in Hopewell Virginia at the time, in what would now be considered ghetto. As we rode to the store, 4 black kids between 10-12 years old cornered us. They wanted to know if we had money. We said no, they didn't beleiive us and overpowered us. I was a shrimp and a knock on the was all it took to take care of me. My brother decided to fight for his money, a knife was pulled and the next thing I know I was looking at my big brother laying on the ground with his guts spilled out on the ground. He was sliced from just above his belly button down to his testicles. 28 months, 6 surgeries, and 4 blood transfusions later he got out of the hospital.One testicle had to be removed. For the first time in my life, I heard the N word. Fom My Mother? Dad? No it was from our black neighbor! Couple months later, mainly out of fear of losing my brother I thought I could use a few of the words I had learned to "get back" at the kids that put him there. My Dad NEVER beat my asz as hard as he did that day. Him and Mom ingrained it in my head after that, that KIDS had almost killed my brother, not BLACK kids. That they just happen to be black. That kids do dumb sh*t when they are young. I saw some of the civil rights struggles of the time and my mom and dad always felt they would have to talk about it. We were taught that a man is a man is a man. Thanks to their teaching, we both grew up with many friends of many races. Now fast forward 46 years, All Grandparents are gone. My mom and dad are gone. The only one left is My brother. In Febuary of this year, after a couple months of feeling sick my brother had bloodwork to try and figure it out. On March 1st, he was diagnosed with acute hepititus C from those transfusions long ago. His liver is gone. Before someone says it, My brother, because of his injuries never had sex. Never touched drugs, and was not a "dirty" person (because of his wounds he couldn't be.) The Doctors agreed it was from the tranfusions. So now, he is put on a list and wait to see which comes next-liver or death. I know BooHooHoo. But for this old man it's gonna be a lonly life. And then a couple weeks later I heard this preacher spewing hate and I went ballistic on Blacks. I spewed my hate to you and others on what a MAN said. Man I cracked... I was no better than the preacher. I am ashamed and I have shamed my parents. You have my sincere Apology RAVEN and anyone else I've slandered. Thanks for hearing me out...
Comment: I am truely sorry for your brother's health problems ( I have a brother, too, and I am sincerely empathetic), and I completely understand why you would feel this way about black people--even for this long.

What happened to you and your brother is not ANCIENT history! You are still fairly a young man. My grandfather died less than ten years ago, and his family was chased out of Columbus, GA. by the klan. He had accidently run over a little white boy when he was a young man, but you know regardless of the circumstances--he was going to be lynched.
My mother and father are still alive and they remember having to sit in the back of the bus, attend blacks-only schools, segregated this and segregated that. But they are not bitter--but they won't forget. They were young and so were many of the racists at that time, so they know that these people and their warp since of thinking did not just VANISH! SO I hope you understand why some of us will not simply forget, as though nothing ever happened.
We also don't dwell on it as we are accused of doing. Whites wish to sweep it under the rug of history.
I know I sound harsh, cruel, insulting and down-right dirty at times(but ONLY if I have dirt thrown at me), but I find it laughable that a white person will tell me how racist I am, but pass over the racist remarks of their own people. They say Obama's race is not the issue, but do you really believe that? At the first chance these white people get, they are all over his skin color. Wright is just an excuse to prolong the race issue.
I accept your apology, and would like to offer my own. Our people are not perfect, but as I said earlier, there is a quiet brotherhood between us that does not have to be spoken of. And though we will not always agree on everything, the word HATE will never be used to decribe our feelings toward one another.

My feelings about the AIDS thing is that I don't believe that it was created to kill black people. I don't think it was created at all. Sounds too outrageous to me.
However...I can see why some black people believe it. Especially those who remember the Tuskegee Experiments. He is a role model, like no other politician in America or anywhere else for that matter that serves as role model for them. To this white woman, it seems to me that the engrained bias of white America, is born by a sense of guilt over a past they wish would just go away without being addressed. Barack Obama is perhaps the most outstanding and courageous American today in the political realm.... Not only does he have sound judgement, he has taught and upholds the constitution of the United States, knows more about his fellowman and America aught to be proud to have someone with his grace and stature running for the highest office in their country. I say shame on those who point fingers of blame without weighing the multitude of wise decisions not motivated by politics that Barack Obama has achieved in his short life. Comment: I have spent the last hours reading voters responses to the racial implications of Barack Obama's spiritual mentor. It appears that a lot of the people who voted for him before feel deceived and really want to vote again. I think is very deceptive to think that you can be a president in the United States without acknowleging the racial devide. This fact should have been obvious after all of the minorities in the south and mid west that voted for the Clintons in the past suddenly voted for Obama this year. They apparently were not looking at his experience, or ability to lead. He says he has no record of his work in the state senate to prove that he can create a positive change. His only claim to fame is "speaking out against the war". There were a lot of people who spoke out against the war, and there were a lot of democratic leaders who voted to give the president power to manage the conflict. With the way Obama responds to the influence of his mentors and political managers, I am sure he would have voted with Hillary if he had been in the senate at that time. After 20 years of being influenced by a racist leader, spending thousands of dollars to support that church, and now trying to separate himself from the principles that his children have been taught, strikes me as being a person who wants the green grass on both sides of the fence. There are a lot of black people (including me) who are very disappointed that we have agreed to support a leader that we really don't know. So while we can't re-vote in the primaries, we will have an opportunity to clear our minds and heal our spirits in the November election.

However, if you are truly an African-American and find Wright's comments to be unfounded based on his personal experiences in this country, you are probably in denial of your own African-American. I also understand where those comments are coming and I do not believe in disembodying the more senior African-American communities whose life experience have paved a way for a brighter experience for younger African-American. My maternal grandmother grew up in Harlem and work as a buyer for Macy "passing." My maternal grandfather was a Black University Professor at Columbia and Yale and was good friends with Thurgood Marshall... this man grew up in different times. My maternal great-great uncle was the first black president of Howard University. On the other hand, on my paternal grandfather was a land owning farmer who could not read or write - he made a mark for his name. My paternal grandmother was a high school educated hair dresser who owned her own salon. Both of my parents broken the chain of the "Slave Mentality" for me and gave me the you can do anything... be anything. However, my family tree ties me to a mixture of races but is classified as "Colored, Creole, Black, African-American" - (whatever label). I know the richness of this tree, truly makes me AMERICAN to the core. I come from GREAT people!! So the FACT the Obama attended a Black Church with a preacher that preaches with vigor and vinegar just tells me that Obama has his finger on the pulse of the racial divide in America. I believe he understands all sides effectively. We all have the SAME basic needs... we want to feel safe on our journeys to provide for ourselves and our families. I DO NOT feel betrayed at all, I like be spoken to like an adult so when an issue comes up let's address it as adults instead of spinning it into oblivion!
