The Most Fuel Efficient Cars

Ten small and stylish rides that save gas and money

Despite what automakers would have you believe, fuel efficiency just doesn't come in big packages. Sure, they've overrun the market with big, powerful new hybrids that promise to sip rather than guzzle gas. Don't believe the marketing of such "hype-brid" vehicles. The truth: the most fuel-efficient cars are sub-compacts and mid-size vehicles. Here's a look at the 10 most fuel efficient cars for 2009, and a look at 2008's most-efficient list.

Where's the Ford Fusion on this list? It should be there.

Where's the Ford Fusion? I know for a fact it should be on this list.

I have rented three Ford Focus automobiles in the last year, total mileage of the rentals about 4,000 miles.
I ALWAYS, repeat, ALWAYS got better than 34 miles to the gallon, real and mixed driving. Trust me, I am no light weight when it comes to either speed or acceleration. On the long highway stretches, ALWAYS 35 to 37 MPG, and always at speed limit or above.

I have owned many Volkswagens, Mazdas, Mercedes, and Fords. The Focus nears the efficiency of the Smart car and it uses regular 87 octane fuel, not premium as required by the Smart car. And costs substantially less.

The Chevy Aveo is an old style noisy US fuel sipper that no one really enjoys driving.

The Focus not only deserves to be in this list , but near the top of it. The bent of the author shows. Author, you go rent one just like I did and drive it to and from Vermont. You will sing a different tune, one cannot help being favourably impressed. It is not flashy, but it is good, really good..
