Why do folks continue to flash a 5 star crash test rating for a subcompact as a definition for a safe subcompact car. The majority of crashes on American roads will not occur between a subcompact and a car of similar mass.

Crash tests only simulate a crash between two vehicles of similar mass traveling at opposite directions. A collision with a vehicle with greater mass will make the crash test results completely irrelevant. Subcompacts are simply not safe for America`s roads. The rest is simply smoke and mirrors to get people to buy these death traps. Remember folks, fuel economy comes at a price. Nothing is free in this world and something must be sacrificed for something to be gained.

I had a Chevy Sprint (Geo Metro) that got 35ish in the city and more that 50mpg on the highway. In 1986. What's wrong with this picture? I'd gladly pay $12,000 for another one of those.

      What about the air car?

      What ever happened to it?

I own a 2008 Ford Focus..4 door, manual transmission. 41MPG which certainly even beats out the Smart Car and Mini Cooper and has a hell of a lot more room! Why isn't this on the list?????

    • Posted By: stinkygeez18 @ 08/07/2009 3:10:38 PM

Because according to EPA numbers, the Focus doesn't get 41MPG. Real world mpg is much better than the EPA numbers for pretty much every vehicle. I'm sure the Smart and Mini Cooper get better mileage than the Focus.

The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid needs to be on this list. It is on the market now.

One car not on the list is the Honda Civic GX which has the lowest gasoline (or diesel) consumption of any car on the market except the Telsa. Yet it is never discussed.
The Honda Civic GX is a Natrual Gas vehicle which when paired with the Phil station results in a vehicle that costs about $1 a Gasoline Gallon Equivilient (GGE) and it is environmentally cleaner than most of ther vehicles on the road.
I get about 35-40 miles per GGE.
If more people knew about the value of a NGV vehicle then perhaps more support for natural gas at filling stations would become a reality.
As it is now, lack of filling stations and the short range (only a 8 GGE tank) hurts this otherwise awesome car.

The 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid, on sale now, has fuel economy ratings of 41 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, beating most of the cars in this list.

I regularly get 42 MPG mixed driving with my manual Yaris. I love my little car, and can't figure out why people still drive SUVs.

Where's the Ford Fusion on this list? It should be there.

Where's the Ford Fusion? I know for a fact it should be on this list.

I have rented three Ford Focus automobiles in the last year, total mileage of the rentals about 4,000 miles.
I ALWAYS, repeat, ALWAYS got better than 34 miles to the gallon, real and mixed driving. Trust me, I am no light weight when it comes to either speed or acceleration. On the long highway stretches, ALWAYS 35 to 37 MPG, and always at speed limit or above.

I have owned many Volkswagens, Mazdas, Mercedes, and Fords. The Focus nears the efficiency of the Smart car and it uses regular 87 octane fuel, not premium as required by the Smart car. And costs substantially less.

The Chevy Aveo is an old style noisy US fuel sipper that no one really enjoys driving.

The Focus not only deserves to be in this list , but near the top of it. The bent of the author shows. Author, you go rent one just like I did and drive it to and from Vermont. You will sing a different tune, one cannot help being favourably impressed. It is not flashy, but it is good, really good..

This list is grossly incorrect and foregets some of the fuel efficient vehicles the American cimpanies make. The Camry hybrid is on here but the more fuel efficient Malibu and Aura hybrids are not? How is this possible?

Also to the people that just want to look at specs the Japanese companies (Toyota mostly) have several THOUSAND lawsuits currently in court over fuel efficiency ratings. Remember the Prius not long ago was 60 mpg? No changes have been made since then and its not rated at 60 mpg anymore? How about Motortrend saying they couldnt get the Camry, Camry Hybrid, or Prius to even come close to the EPA rated fuel efficiency specs (2008 Motortrend car of the year voting issue if you want to look it up) ? The closest to getting its actual EPA specs was 6 MPG off! They rate their cars at the best they will ever get with almost no weight in the cars (this goes for options as well) at optimum temperature and height in the US. GM I know for a fact underrates their cars. My 1998 Sunfire rated at 31 MPG highway when the epa figures used 55 mph as the highway spec gets 31 MPG highway in michigan during the winter at 65 MPH. At 55 MPH my 31 MPG rated car got over 40 MPG WITH A PASSENGER! The 1998 Lumina I had was rated at 28 highway (55 mph EPA specs) and it got 30 highway in Michigan driving at 70 MPH. My 1999 Trans Am is rated at 24 MPG highway (55 mph epa specs) and it got 25 coming back from Indiana doing 70 the whole way.

Prius owners routinely exceed the EPA rating. I don't know what Motor Trend did, but they did it wrong. Also, you cannot over-rate or under-rate a car. It is a standardized test, and the number that comes out is the number that comes out. It accounts for load and many other factors. (Note that the test was redesigned for MY2008, so any discussion of past numbers is moot)

heres an explaination to good gas mileage!! Ive been driving my geo metro for 15 years and lets just say it made me a rich man!! This car gets me 44 miles per gallon in the city and even though its very small this car was made for the city and thats it!! the geo metro is one of the greAtest machines ever made its a 3 cylinder 50 horsepower car and thats where you get the gas mileage at!! you would think that someone would bring back this car primarily for people who do city driving anyways this is my rant cause i feel the GEO METRO is one of the greatest cars ever made.

If we could get over the notion that we look silly in these cars, we'd be better off.

Ford Focus 2007 (2.0 L engine, auto transmission) in the city (without traffic jam) gets 40 mpg on 92 octane and 65 mpg on 95 octane gasoline on Ukrainian roands. Long live Ford!

What about us families who have four kids. We already have to spend alot on our families for food. We need to save gas to. I haven't seen many family vehicles. People buy alot of tahoes and suburbans why not make them more affordable and hybrid. Plus, who want's a ugly little car that looks like a space ship. We want the most popular, good looking cars to be hybrids. The auto makers would make more money if they were smarter about what people really want. I really like the Honda civic. It looks like it is the most fuel efficiant also. Problem is it's not even American made. I know there is tons of talent here in america. It needs put to use.

we own a buick lucerne that get's over 30 mpg hwy , plus is a full size nice riding car. Why are all the articles these day's so biased against american car's .i will put it up against any foreign car in it's class for ride comfort.

  • Posted By: MTNGREGGS @ 02/21/2009 11:00:32 PM

I think this article is somewhat biased towards the american auto mfg's,chevrolet by its self makes 30 models that get 30 mpg.The chevy cobalt gets better fuel mleage than the non hybrid honda civic and toyota corolla, also the chevy malibu comes as a hybrid with comparable mpg numbers to honda accord and toyota camry, the non hybrid version gets 33 mpg which beats the camry and accord. Also you left out the nissan altima which is actuall better than the camry & accord!!

  • Posted By: MTNGREGGS @ 02/21/2009 10:48:38 PM

Why did you leave out the chevy cobalt ,it gets better fuel mileage than honda civic And toyota corola and evan though the ford focus is not very good looking it did better than afew of the cars listed!

Why is so little said about the Hyundai autos? We have a Hyundai Elantra 4 cylinder that regularly gets 38 MPG on the highway. This is the third one we have had, and they have all done better than a lot of hybrids.
