Why is so little said about the Hyundai autos? We have a Hyundai Elantra 4 cylinder that regularly gets 38 MPG on the highway. This is the third one we have had, and they have all done better than a lot of hybrids.

Why is the Ford Focus not mentioned in this article it gets 30 city and 33 highway which is better then some of the cars mentioned like the Chevy which is not only not as efficent but in my opinion ugly.

Why is the Ford Focus not in your list it gets 30 city and 33 highway better then some of the cars in your list.

Funny. Didn't see the Mercedes E320 CDI or the new Medcedes C250 CDI. Never heard much of the E300 Turbodiesel that I drive either. Wonder why... My 1999 gets over 30mpg on the highway and easily 26mpg in the city. The new C250 CDI is rated at 45mpg but in a recent UK highway test got over 70mpg. When is our national IQ going to match the Europeans' and open the door to the next level of technology? Wake me up when the US automakers put either a TDI diesel hybrid on the road or really push the envelope and use a micro-gas turbine hybrid electric package. 100mpg is not hard. P.S. All of the vehicles I mentioned above seat 5, have been and are still available, and easily run 200,000 miles without a hiccup. And if they were built here in numbers, they wouldn't sport their German luxo-price tags either.

You don't mention anything for those with larger families. We drive a Kia Rondo, which gets as least the same mileage as a Honda Fit, yet holds up to seven passengers.

I am surprised you didn't mention the Kia Rondo. Know one ever reviews gas efficient cars for larger families. The Rondo gets at the same mileage as the Honda Fit, yet it has room for up to seven passengers - necessary for families with more than three children..

What vehicles are the suits going to let us buy today? There are a lot of cars to use for that daily commute to work every day. They are just not deemed safe enought for American drivers. The Geo Metro-XFI or the Honda CRX-HF would be bloted over priced plastic cars today if they were brought up to todays goverment production specs. Just go to the japonize or europe internet and check out there cars. Where's the Ford Fiesta at? Ford said that by the time it adds all the US goverment production mods to it ,it will cost $26,000 not $12,000. Get the goverment do gooders out of the car business and see what happens. If old cars are so unsafe how we get out of the 1960s.

They totally left off the Mazda 3i - My 2006 gets 34 - 36 on the Highway and 28 - 31 in the city depending on how I drive.

I live in Sierra Vista, AZ and drive a 2000 Buick Park Avenue. When going up to Tucson or Phoenix I average almost 34 MPG driving at the legal interstate limit of 75 mph. This car handles beautifully and rides very nice and quiet, plus we have ample leg and elbow room--not squashed in like driving an import. I would never buy a new car in Arizona--taxes are too high--so it'll be a used car.

I currently have a 2000 Buick Park Avenue, and when I drive up to Phoenix or Tucson I can average 34 MPG at hiway speed (75) Around town it gets almost 20 mpg. It is a car that has a beautiful ride and PLENTY of elbow space. CSM Bill

I disagee with your statement about the cooper's handling. I own a mini cooper and the handling is superb. It's a fun car to drive and a great vaule

While I care about the enviroment,I also interested in practicality. I truthly don't think that new always means better. As an examlpe I daily drive a'93 Ford Explorer at about 75-80 mph to an from work ,with about 200 to 250 lbs. of tools as well a the spare full sized tire. I still get about 22-27 mpg in city\27-32 hwy. The only things I do specail is maintance and premium gas. It can seat 5 people and pull a trailer comfortly and not worry about being crushed!

To those complaining about cars not meeting their ratings, those numbers are not set by the manufacturer. The EPA tests and determines those numbers. They have changed the way they test over the years to make them more realistic, but many cars from all makers beat those numbers. Toyota is no more or less affected by the ratings than anyone else. I know several Corolla owners that get over 40 mpg with automatics on the highway. I also have a friend with a Camry hybrid who beats the ratings often. The driver is the biggest factor. The numbers are for comparison, and they do a pretty good job of comparing models against one another. You can go to the EPA's website, and there is a section where owners report their actual mileage. You can look up any model and see what the real world numbers are. The averages there can give you a very good idea what they will actually do. (I currently own 2 GM's, 1 Chrysler, and 1 Toyota, so I am not biased)

This list has 2 vehicles with a 1 mpg higher city rating than the Chevy Malibu/Saturn Aura hybrids but those 2 cars have a 1 mpg lower highway rating than the Malibu and Aura. This list also doesnt have on it the Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G3 which is 25city 37 highway. Those 4 GM cars should have made this list over the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa.

It should also be mentioned that the Big 3 dont expect you to drive a car the size of a golfcart to get fuel efficiecy. They give you 30 MPGs while giving you a vehicle you can put your family in (Chevy Imapala, Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura).

How safe are you when driving a Smart ForTwo? Hit on the freeway by someone doing 40 or more youre dead. My life is worth a lot more than $12,000 to risk driving that tiny hunk of junk.

American made, American owned is still the best on the planet.

The Honda Fit and Nissan Versa listed above have automatic transmissions and get 27 mpg city / 33 mpg highway. The Chevy Cobalt that you mention gets 25 mpg city / 37 mpg highway only with a manual transmission. If you get an automatic transmission on the Chevy Cobalt like the Honda Fit or Nissan Versa, then fuel economy drops to 24 mpg city / 33 mpg highway. Thus the Chevy Cobalt does not belong on the list here.

I can see Honda Accord....but I do not see Nissan Altima inspite of the fact that Altima gives better mileage than Camry or Accord. Surprising indeed.

Can't help but notice only one of the 20 is American (Big Three) made.

Whatever happened to the 50 mpg plus cars (My old Sprint Plus (3 cylindar gasoline car by Suauki) got 52 and another model was rated at 56 mpg)?

The use of the hemp to the car is economical, and environmental.

It went to a state-of-the-art factory of the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing that had operated in 97. The half of the product of above-mentioned BaFa is the car parts of Benz. Food and where do you use it?
Why do you use it?It is not a still famous topic as the voice is heard at once.

In Benz, a necessary material for next generation's car has a clear vision of natural fabric while doing the project where the car parts are made from the Cocoyashi fiber in Brazil 90 year. And, even the target to turn on the market has the car that uses the natural fabric for 95% or more of the body body by 2015.

Hanf used for the car actually increases every year. It is a natural fabric according to
the material of the Nova laboratory used for the car usage.

    Hanf(hemp)
    1996?98 0 tons

    1999 300 tons 2000 2001 1200 ton 2002 1600 ton 2200 tons

Anyway, the natural fabric of the car usage increases rapidly.
The advantage that uses the natural fabric : for the car.

1)The body lightens, and fuel cost improves if it uses it a lot because
    the specific gravity is 0.3?0.4.
???It is a supremacy proposition that lightens the body for the car.
    Lightening of 8kg per one

2)Use as substitution of glass fiber
???The glass fiber mixed with the resin stuck in the body when colliding, and was not good on safety.
3)Because the environmental control is cleared, the material that pursuit ??? glass fiber of the easiness of recycling enters is unsuitable for recycling. When it is a natural fabric, the thermal recycle is easy.
As for the use of the natural fabric, use by the automobile engineering is especially advanced. Automaker..natural fabric..raw material..more than before..introduce.Because the contradiction of CO2 (carbon dioxide) reduction and recycling rate improvement is canceled as a result. The recycling rate worsens for the clearness of the CO2 problem when plastic is used for that though lightening the body is necessary. When lightening is possible, and it grows it, CO2 is absorbed if it is a natural fabric though the body becomes heavy by being use a lot of metallic materials to achieve a high recycling rate oppositely. Moreover, the natural fabric is said that not only respect of ecology but also the following advantages exist about mechanical strength and the produce cost compared with usual plastic.

The weight of 10?30% can reduce.
It excels in the mechanical property and the effect of the sound.
It is advantageous in excelling in the processing technology
characteristic as the friction of the metal mold is a little etc. and
prices. (Do not change to the oil price. )

I'm surprised to not see the Honda Civic (Gas) on the list. It's mileage is up to 35 MPG and its 5 year operating cost (including gas) is far lower than any Hybrid.

  • Posted By: americanfan @ 12/25/2008 3:33:55 PM

How about including something from America? How about the new Malibu or Malibu hybrid both of which get better mileage than their Japanese competitors. At least include the Chevy Aveo or something marketed through an american company. How about the new Ford Fusion hybrid which blows all vehicles in its class away in mileage. Too bad reporting is so biased towords the foreign competition. It is uniformed reporters such as yourself that would have americans think we don't build nice fuel efficient vehicles in this country. The reality is that we are leaders in fuel economy in almost every class from pick ups and suvs to sub compacts. I think with Toyota posting a 1.6 billion dollar loss and quality slipping Americans are finally getting tired of your biased inaccurate reporting.
