What is happening here? I have a VW 2002 Jetta TDI Diesel and I get 47 MPG.

    The car is NOT e4lectric!

I've asked Prius owners and they do NOT get the mileage I get!

Just can't wait to merge with LA freeway traffic in a mini hybrid-40mph to 70 mph is of more concern that 0-60.. This article is a piece of pure BS. No wonder I quit your mag 30 years ago. John willis, Kingsport, TN

The manufactures listed MPG is wrong for the Yaris. Head on over to http://www.yarisworld.com and you'll see plenty of owners reporting 40+ MPG. Apparently your test driver sucks, I can take 25 MPH corners at 50+ in my stock suspention hatchback, and I know of others that have lowered thiers and added aftermarket stabilization bars who can boast even better performance. Don't believe me ? I'll tell ya what send your crew over and I'll show you a driving demonstration you won't soon forget.

Not only that, but the Ford Escape's city mileage is better than all but the top two cars listed here!

    Whoops!

Wow, you guys wanted to make a point so badly about only small cars getting good mileage and your "don't believe that larger vehicle hybrids can get good mileage" rant that you actually delved into bad reporting, calling two of the cars on your list two of the top ten most fuel efficient cars in America, when both of them get worse city and highway mileage than that Ford Escape SUV hybrid.

Actually, if you read they "why can't cars get 50 mpg" article here http://www.newsweek.com/id/130439 ... it'll better answer those comments and questions you two both have about where mpg is going to nowadays, compared to the relative death traps of the 70, 80 and 90's cars.

Too bad the new VW clean diesel Jetta TDI that just came out wasn't available when this was put together.
it gets 29 city/ 40 highway says EPA but 38/44 mpg says an independet test lab. Long before there were hybrids, diesels were the fuel economy choice of many going back two plus decades-- there weren't many choices and like all cars they had their own "issues". But now, the new generation diesels have had a makeover to be clean, quiet and fun to drive-- and next year i bet are on this list. To see a list of all diesels coming soon including from Honda/Acura, Nissan, and GM and BMW, visit www.dieselforum.org

No one seems to know that diesel engines have pumps and injectors that do have to be kept clean and if you have a problem with your diesel pump,...it's almost cheaper to just go buy a new car !

      • Posted By: megaman49 @ 09/23/2008 12:56:51 PM

new gasoline engines have injectors and pumps too

  • Posted By: megaman49 @ 09/23/2008 12:48:30 PM

The car manufacturers are killing us with not offering truly economic choices. Yes, hybrids have very low emissions and are better for the environment than most conventional cars, but there are cars that were built in the 70s, 80s, and 90s that have been getting better fuel economy with conventional drivetrains for years. The 70s and 80s volkswagon rabbit diesel gets roughly 60 mpg with the manual transmission. I owned a '93 Geo Metro 3-cylinder with a 5-spd that got 50 - 55 mpg under poor conditions. These cars were dirt cheap to build, sell and own. If the car companies would build new versions of these cars with the same fuel economy, I would buy one in a heartbeat. In the meantime, I guess I will have to wait for a good plug-in hybrid to come out.

I don't know why we can't get better gas mileage out of these cars. I owned a 1993 Geo Metro with a 3-cylinder TBI engine (1980's technology), a 5-Spd Manual and 125k miles on the odemeter and I routinely got 50+ MPG under less than ideal conditions. The car was bigger than the Smart for 2 but smaller than the new hybrids. America just needs to bite the bullet and sacrifice some performance for efficiency.

Where's the progress? I have a '98 Saturn 4 dr SL w/ 1.9 L engine and 5 spd manual that gets 30+ in the city and 40-50+ on the highway, depending on wind conditions, load, and how carefully I'm driving. Not a luxury car, but not uncomfortable, either. If it had a CVT, I'm sure you could add a few more mpg. Hybrids as now implemented do not appear to be worth the additional cost and the maintenance they're sure to require.

What type of research is this list based on? The comment by reggmc below is spot on. I own a Pontiac G6 GT and get 28-30 mpg. The G6 also provides the style, comfort, performance and safety features the matchbox cars on this list do not come close to.

I'm getting 39 to 40 mpg with my Yaris hatchback. And that's at highway speed of 70 mph.

I am tired of hearing about these select lists of top rated fuel efficient cars, I mean who exactly comes up with these? I would challenge anyone to find a gaser that would beat the factory VW TDI. And what is good gas mileage now, cars have been getting well into the 30's for decades (anyone remember the geo metro???). I would have no problem adding my car to the list: stock Audi A3 (200hp/207lbs.ft.), it gets 33-35 hwy and will smoke any car on that list........

  • Posted By: lvspalms @ 09/19/2008 12:09:50 PM

Someone forgot the mention the Ford Focus in there. I own one and get 28 MPG city. That is way better than the Honda Accord that made your list...................

  • Posted By: lvspalms @ 09/19/2008 12:08:41 PM

Where is the Ford Focus? I own one and get 28 MPG city. That is certainly better than the Honda Accord.

Reggmc: Oh yah, the Foreign Car Bias in this story is sooooo apparent. Retard. If American companies wont build fuel efficient cars, they will not make the list. You talk about the entire range of GM cars getting 30+ MPG you conveniently?, leave out that they are highway miles. Your comparison of the Miata convertible to some Chevy hunk of junk is a Big Joke! I notice you didn't compare the Chevy to a Mini or any other car similar to its type. This so-called-reporting will stop once American companies can build fuel efficient vehicles. Until then stop gnashing your teeth and get back to work you company shill.

  • Posted By: reggmc @ 09/19/2008 9:47:32 AM

The foreign car bias in this story is awful and so misleading. Nearly the entire range of GM mid sized vehicles, Saturn Aura, Chevy Maliby and Pontiac G6 have models that have 30+ mpg, not even counting the hybrid versions. And there is a Chevy Cobalt XFE (Extra Fuel Efficient) model that gets 37 mpg. And, including the Miata is a big joke, with Chevy Cobalt SS models (2 and 4 door) that get 30mpg highway, beating the Miata easily, with much more content and more zoom, zoom, zoom. This sort of so-called reporting is why American's falsely believe that foreign badged vehicles are superior to US, union assembled vehicles. Thanks a lot Newsweek.

Again, the professionals know everything like not one AMERICAN MADE CAR made their list. Did you know that the Jeep Compass beat the HONDA CR-V in everything. Yes an American made car BEAT OUT A HONDA.. WOO HOO. You go Jeep Compass and you professionals, start reporting professionally.

  • Posted By: tsbugg @ 09/18/2008 4:29:34 PM

Scooteroo--they dont count any diesel engines in the group. Kinda like they just want to count only Hybrids. Count this--You would have to own a Prius 9 years to make up the difference in cost versus the malibu hybrid.
