The article failed to mention that these sre "best" of class fuel efficient cars - not all fuel efficient cars looped together. When you also factor in reliability - Japanese made cars are 9 of the 10 best. The fact is American made cars are well behind the competition - and will never catch up. Ford actually sells a Feista model in Europe that looks exceptional and gets very good gas milage. Unfortunately - they're to stupid to bring it to the states.

Hondapower06 - Chevrolet Cobalt #1 in fuel economy in its class. Chevrolet Malibu #1 in fuel economy mid-size sedan market (the largest market in the industry. Chevrolet Silverado #1 in fuel economy full size truck segment. Get your facts straight before you spout off about American made vehicles.

Once again the VW Jetta TDI [turbo diesel injection] is missing from the list. I know it woun't be available again till 2009 probably but our 2003 Wagon still gets 50+ mpg on the highway at 75 mph with 33 mpg being the very least we've experienced. Our 2000 Jetta still gets an average of 40 min mixed driving. I've been warning people for years about gas becoming more expensive and have to laugh when people brag about 30 mpg on the highway. From the Milwaukee area to Sunset Beach NC (aver 800 miles) it took 1-1/4 tanks (16 gal tank). When Detroit learns to listen to people and learn to be more nimble maybe they'll get it. In the meantime, if they want a bailout EVERY TOP EXEC (not just Lee Iacocca) should be accept only $1 salary per year with NO BONUSES, NO EXPENSE PACKAGES, NADA.

Once again you missed the Jetta Diesel. My 2003 wagon took 2 gallons to get about 105 miles. (It was rated at 50 mpg when I bought it). It has never got less than 33 mpg in stop and go traffic. These are substantial cars that doesn't feel small in any way. The 2009 model due out soon which will meet all 50 states' emissions standards is set to get even better mileage.

to state68147 - missing my point. I???m not winning just pointing out that auto and oil giants have profited from keeping technology hidden, and putting up a mirage with these great gas savors and hybrids. 30 - 40mpg is a joke and scam! Your right it is an apple oranges comparison from the 70???s, I get that and agree. You've got to admit that it's a travesty that we're not much better 30+ years later? let's talk about a car or SUV getting 75 - 100mpg - or how about not using gas at all? now that's something to get excited about! they should have been on market many years ago.

To: daweezyone-wake up. 30 years ago Honda was new to the US and did not sell many cars. How could there be many left? There are plenty of old Hondas still on the road, just open your eyes. A 1968 Ford with 400k miles is great! Really something to brag about. But that is a rare occurance for any brand. To: toddEby -pay attention! Cars are rated differently now than the 70's. It's an apple and oranges comparison. In the 70's they were much less safe at enormously dirty with emissions! The cars today (from everybody) are enormously better made! If you want a Jetta Diesel, go buy one! Enjoy! Competition really is great for the economy as long as there really is a downside...going out of business if you get it wrong. THAT is one of the differences today. Today all the American car companies are going to get a $25 billion bailout. It's a sad day when auto execs will get their big bonuses paid for by you and me. BTW...my cars get 28-50 mpg REAL WORLD ( I keep a log). I have hated paying for gas for 40 years, so I have ALWAYS owned good (relatively) mpg cars. I could go on about stuff like buying a pickup so I could haul air, owning a Corvette so I could feel younger and more like a real man, gigantic 6-9 passenger cars or SUVs so I could pad the dysfunctional operations of Detroit (or Toyota or Nissan, etc) income statements. But I won't go there. Quit whining about the 'good old days' and make a decision to do something to improve things today.

Come on this is a joke Newsweek! Car manufacturers are pushing a car getting 25 to 30mpg sounding great? We all know that cars built back in the 70's were getting 30 - 40 mpg. A Jetta Diesel can get 50mpg!!! give us all a break and do something to expose this atrocity!!! we all know there is technology that was bought out by the big oil companies to keep us dependent.

O.k. I'm a big fan of Ford. What I just saw was not the greatest artical in the world. Having nothing to show but Japanise based cars is very sickening. Fords have the hybrid Escape which is a good start on fords end for "green cars" but GM is coming out with a great assortment of hybrids like the Tahoe, Silverodo, and the Volt which uses almost no gas at all. Alot of GM front wheel drive car like the F body's (like the Grand Prix, Commaro, and most Buicks) git well in to the 30 MPG range (these are good sized viehicals) without loseing the reliabitity of a good American car (ever since the 70's jap cars were always considered throw-a-way cars ).

    • Posted By: Babylonandon @ 08/29/2008 3:35:03 PM

Reliability?? American cars??? LOL. I'll laugh about that one all the way to my '95 Maxima with 191,000 miles on it. It replaced a '91 Integra that had 189,000 miles on it 4 years ago.

I'll bet my wife's Accord LX is still running strong when those Buicks and Grand Prix's have been bought for scrap and sent to China.

      • Posted By: daweezyone@hotmail.com @ 09/16/2008 6:37:26 PM

Old US cars are still around while those Hondas you speak of have since been recycled into your new cars dash, Hondas have been around for the better part of 30 years and how many of their first cars are still on the road? Not as many as older american cars....
My father ( retired now) still has his 1968 ford with over 400K miles on the org engine.. It still runs!!

  • Posted By: Mr. Man @ 09/12/2008 1:25:41 PM

I have to agree with everyone. I own a Cobalt and get way better milage than those listed in the lower half of the list. I can't help but feel that this is more "hate America/ we should hate ourselves for success" attitude. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

    • Posted By: daweezyone@hotmail.com @ 09/16/2008 6:27:02 PM

My old toyota tercel (ugly as it was) got fantastic gas mileage..Much better than most lsited on this survey! Even my old Le'Car got 30+ and was a actualy fun to drive despite its ugliness too!!

  • Posted By: Wench @ 09/16/2008 10:50:53 AM

I'm sorry, but my 2005 Chevy Cobalt gets much better mileage than all but two of the vehicles you've listed.

How can you leave off the complete line of Volkswagons TDI Diesel Models?
    My wifes Jetta averages 41mgp!

I love all those articles about doesels,...Just for the record, diesel engines must be kept very clean, especially the fuel as the car has injectors and a fuel pump that cost an arm and a leg to fix if they get gummed up or a speck of dirt in them. The whole idea of clean cars with great fuel milage is to save money and have a comfortable and practical car. Just don't let your diesel pump get a bit gummed up or dirty because it will be cheaper to buy a new car than to clean the pump or injectors...

This is obviously a hate America publication. The liberal left wing media will never give the US credit for anything. I don't see anything that reliability was a requirement, although US cars are right up there.

  • Posted By: GWazNew @ 09/10/2008 4:00:21 PM

Volkswagon TDI Diesel ,Ford overseas gets 65mpg.Coal turned into Diesel is the future,we have more Coal in USA to out produce Overseas Oil.All we got to do is produce it.Bush adim does not want this to happen.Diesel will be KING on the road.Pa is on the right track, for Coal to be King all over again. This is why,you don't see Volkswagon TDI Diesel or any other Diesel on the list, they outdo,Hybirds,& other their promoting.

    • Posted By: zegm @ 09/10/2008 4:29:18 PM

So they don't want to promote the Diesel a proven concept with engines that easily get 200k miles. Yet here they are promoting Hybrids that have unkown maintenance cost as well as what do you do with the batteries when they go bad?

  • Posted By: GWazNew @ 09/10/2008 3:48:25 PM

Think about this,Coal mine regulations were lifted by the Bush admin.Well Coal can be turned into a Diesel fuel.Ford has one only sold overseas that gets 65mpg,Volkswagon TDI Diesel here get over 45mpg.We have alotof Coal in USA that will outdo Oil Companys If we start producing it to Diesel.Diesel & Coal will be the future of USA .The Diesel Veh will be KING.

  • Posted By: zegm @ 09/10/2008 2:40:18 PM

I don't see a single Volkswagon TDI Diesel on here??? VW has the large range of vehicles that get outstanding fuel economy beating most of this list. My wifes TDI Jetta averages 41mpg!!!!

  • Posted By: gdett @ 09/04/2008 5:36:40 PM

Where are the american hybrids??? I own a Ford Escape Hybrid that I have recorded 36 city and 32 highway miles. These are actual fill up your tank and do the mileage math not EPA! That is better than over half of these cars. In addition, I can fit myself ,my wife and 3 sons plus all our luggage.

  • Posted By: sactodd @ 06/18/2008 8:00:46 PM

Someone needs to do some homework on supply/demand. China and India are gulping up oil like crazy, with that added global demand prices increase. Parts of the world are just now entering their gas/oil age and will continue to move prices higher until we increase supply.

    • Posted By: Babylonandon @ 08/29/2008 3:48:23 PM

We have got huge fuel reserves in this country. Anyone that tells you otherwise is just some mooonbat liar. There is as much oil in the Green River Shale deposits as there is in all of Saudi Arabia maybe even 3 times as much. Add in ANWAR and the Coasts and we have AT LEAST 150 years worth of oil (if we keep it to ourselves).

Then you add in coal gasification and liquification. Using the same processes the Germans used during WWII, we have enough coal to make sufficent gas, diesel, and natural gas to power our current needs for another 250 years. To say we don't have fuel is stupid. It might not be as cheap as what we've gotten back 5 years ago but we've got plenty.

We are a nation at war... against an enemy whom we financed and enabled to coalesce against us by our purchase of and continued dependence on for their oil. As a Soldier who has served two tours in Iraq, I cannot in good conscience drive a car that burns less than 25 mpg. It is with a certain amount of smugness that I boast of having recently acquired a Honda Civic that averages 30-35 mpg.

We are a nation at war... against an enemy we largely financed through our purchase and continued dependence upon for their oil. I am a Soldier who has served two tours in Iraq. My own conscience and sense of citizenship will not permit me to drive anything that burns less than 28 MPG. It is with a certain amount of smugness that I boast of having recently acquired a Honda Civic averaging 28-35 mpg.

geez ladystar . . . no one says you can't have your Caddy. You just have to pay for your choice to drive it. My wife has a new Lincoln MKZ (great AWD sedan) and I have and old '89 full-size bronco to pull my boat. I also have a 1990 Miata which still gets an average 28 mpg. That is what I drive daily. We understand that when we burn gas the costs are not just related to production. This isn't a supply/demand market issue. When you or I burn gas at 15 mpg we share our choice with society in general. We force the guy burning gas at 30 mpg to breath the same air we choose to polute at twice the rate, etc., etc. We should pay more at the pump and they should be rewarded for choosing to mitigate the damage we cause.

Thinking outside of one's self required here ladystar.
