We CANT increase supply by that much - there are no new huge discoveries that we don't already know about and produce from ... This is as much a story about SUPPLY as it is DEMAND - demand is rising, supply is peaking, and we will be seeing prices skyrocket very quickly in the next 10 years. After which, there will be damn little oil left to deplete. We will see the global economy collapse, and we'll end up using horses and burning coal and living much like we did in the 19th Century - HYBRID 19th Century Era - the end of the OIL ERA is just beginning. Chaos is nigh. I'm not kidding.
barosso stfu u republican jack off and i suppose were the ones that started a war lied about it ruined the dollar that has sent oil higher and are now feeding us americans with the notion that iran is a threat also lets not forget drilling in alaska that most energie specialist have said will solve nothing but 1 percent of what we need your an idiot u need to speak fact not bi partisium bickering if your gonna blame, blame your gop friends
I drive a 1997 Nissan Altima and my car gets better gas mileage than most of the non hybrid cars listed!!

I have read a lot of these posts and I could not disagree with any of them. So I recommend that not only post your comment here but also fill up Newsweeks mailbox and ask them to reply. Newsweeks e-mail address is WebEditors@newsweek.com and Customer.Care@newsweek.com. Let them know that they are biased and that you would never subscibe to their Japanese controlled magazine.
exactly. i encourage everyone to cancel subscrtiptions to newsweek immediately. such bullcrap, and people wonder why they dont have jobs in the big three!!! its partially because the liberal media wants to keep people outa work and poor so they buy into the democrats model of america===big governement and big taxes which equals no middle class.
where are the american cars or has newsweek sold out to the japanese. perhaps they japanese manufacturers put them up this article in the first place. perhaps they sponsored this article. i drive a 97 saturn wagon and get better mpg than most of those cars. last week i drove to sandiego and kept it at 60mph and a total trip mpg of 45.7 mpg. and thats going over the mountains for half of the way.......
Driving a 2008 Impala LT loaded with all the luxury you could want....25 MPG in town, 35 MPG on the Hwy. Thank you to the General for a great car.....
Another typical magazine that's in bed with the import companies. You list a Miata that gets 22 city/27 HWY yet neglect the comfortably mid-sized vehicles produced in North America that regularly get mid-20's city and low-30's on the highway (WITH a V6 and AUTOMATIC) while being safe and *actually* roomy (not the impression that it's roomy). The Accord is no longer a fuel efficient car either!! Stick with the facts, not your favorites.
Your right about this... my best friend has a 2005 Impala that gets about 35 mpg on the highway and it's a full size car with lots of power.
You do have a point my sister in-law averages 24 mpg city and around 26 hwy and she drives a Ford Expidition. If a smaller vehicle gets that kind of mileage you might as well go for a large SUV and get more bang for your buck!
Why is Newsweek the only post that edits comments? The last time I saw editing like this it was done to manipulate the message.
where is the aptera? at 300 mpg it would put all the automakes in the ground. Probably why you will see congress, yes that democrat controlled one, legislating it out of reach of the American consumer.
A Ford Expedition that gets 24-26 mpg? You either work for Ford or you have been deluded from inhaling all the fumes coming from the tailpipe.
Where's the Toyota Matrix? We've got an '08 model with a manual and a 1.6 4 cylinder engine...we get 30 in the city and close to 40 on the highway.
Typical crap from the media. Not one of the big three on there. Yes people they do make several models that achieve over 30mpg some well over that. It is getting sickening how hard the media works for Japan. Not to mention that a Jetta TDI will kick any hybrids ass in a real world MPG competition.
Dodge Calibur....cute, sporty...I test drove one it has a very smooth ride! It also has more interior room than you might think. At around 40 mpg city and 45 hwy which is what a friend of mine is averaging in hers, I cannot believe it is not on this list. You might want to test drive the Dodge Calibur and revise your top ten list, mile per mile and at around $20,000 it puts alot of your top ten to shame.
I am surprised that the New Dodge Calibur is not on this list. It actually gets better gas mileage city and highway than some of the Top Ten you have listed. You might want to check it out and revise your list. I have test drove it and the ride is smooth and it has more room than you might think.
What happened to kits that would convert gas, etc., into fumes before combustion??? It seems like a small safe unit would do. Thes items need to be attempted by an engineer to be successful. EPA has not rated any with any major potential. I can't believe no one is working is seriously working on this this concept!
Lawrence
Has there ever been any success in efforts of a propane gas converter unit to force fumes into combustion chemberr of our cars, especially the big ones! I have to wonder if fumes have sufficient combustion to do the job? Wouldn't that be great! Anyone knows this is talked about periodically, but never passes EPA tests, Why can't Propane fumes and Gasoline Fumes be Retrofited our current fleet of cars and truck with safe but ecomomical kits would put this crises on it's ear,, giving us breathing room. The Entry of liqud fuel furned to combustion fuels, will make room untll alternate ideas to take hold.!! Acutally I would hunt down my old BRG 1989 Jag V-12, Convrtible two seater., What a car.
Any Engneers out there.? How Soon Lawrence
Volkswagen TDI's got any where from 45-55 mpg! Yes, diesel cost more than gas. But, in the long run it's cheaper per mile.
the list sucks. obviously Honda and Toyota paid Newsweek some bucks in compiling the list. My 2006 Ford Focus automatic gets about 24mpg city 32+mpg highway. a very zippy 4-banger sedan with 4 doors.
