Comment: When is Newsweek going to retract this article?
Chile's disaffected 'Pokemones' don't care much about politics. They're too busy having sex.

Comment: I am trying to get in touch with Ashley Steinberg, and I would really appreciate it if the editors of Newsweek or Ashley herself (should she read this), contact me as soon as possible. I am involved in a project that was in fact inspired by this article, namely a documentary, and so it would be of great help to have a more direct contact with the writer of this article.
That being said, I can be reached on my e-mail address - kelyla.mastropiero@gmail.com

Comment: Do you people even read the comments on you articles? Newsweek, as a respected magazine, should at least read SOME of the comments...read just a few, ANY few, and you'll see that all the comments are against the article! Every comment feels this article is false, it generalizes more than ANYTHING I've ever seen....it almost feels like a fictional piece of writing! the worst thing is, it is a dystopian fictional piece of writing. Not only that, it is hurtful to not only one person (like a pokemon), no only a small, yes SMALL group of people (pokemons) , not only to a great number of people (teenagers becasue the writer is generalizing), but to a WHOLE NATION!!!! If you want to criticize, write about, exagerate, then please please ggget your facts right! A prestigious magazine like Newsweek has just made a horrible mark to a country that is just NOt like that! ANybody who doesn't know chile will be prejudiced, but not only that , will be influenced by it, they will see our country as a sex jungle when it is actually so far from that!! Newsweek should definitely talk to this journalist. More importanly, Newsweek sohuld atleast try to do something to make up, create a solution, for the greatest mistake it has done in a lomng time
Comment: Mrs Steinberg...
don't you have anything more morbid to write about someone else??
Comment: I, as a 16 year old chilean girl, must say this to be an absolutely exxagerated and morbid idea.
I would first like to know who was this reporter...doesn't he have anything else to write about instead of making up stupid things that -honestly- nobody who reads this cares about it?
i mean come on! they are already worsening the image of a country that is not known by everyone and may end up with a wrong perception!
Besides, pokemones and all that ponceo is only a trend followed by what's that? 0.01% of Chiles' population?
i cant believe you are proposing a connection with pinochet's government...this is hilarious...

Comment: I partly agree on what you are saying. As CLEMENTE DN said, most Chilean teenagers are not POKEMONES. But we have Punks, Neonazis, Xenofobics, Gothics, etc. I would say that more than 50% of the teenagers belong to a urban tribe.
Not more than a 10% remain virgin over 18. Those are the Catholics. The ones that are consistent with their ideas.
I think it is a reaction to Pinochet repressive government and to the hypocresy of the stablished religious institutions, mainly the Catholic religion. Recently it has been forbidden that the "pildora del día después" be distributed for free in public hospitals for poor people. But it can still be available for a good sum of money in drugstores. That means that clandestine abortions will increase and more poor people will be born. Sure it will be good for the owners of big enterprises to have more poor workers to be exploited...
The Catholic University used to have a lab where they treated animals in a horrible way and the "pildora del día despues" was tested there..(few people in Chile know this) And in public they are against it..
What is happening in Chile is something that ocurred in Spain after Franco`s departure. And it is also the product of a so - called "liberación" in the wrong sense, I think. In Chile, particularly in Santiago , mental health is extremely bad. And sorry to tell you but we are taking the worst part of the American and European Culture, not the good things.
It is also true that most Chilean youth are not interested in politics, they are interested in sex quite a lot.. Because Chilean sexual culture is not good,. The best sexual education we get -particularly poor people that do not have access to cable tv- is watching feminine buttocks and *** in the open tv. And in that sense it is true that it is poor people that are pockemones. Gothics, for example, usually belong to higher classes, since a long black coat is about $50.0000 (about 50 kilos of ordinary bread -"marraquetas"). It is also true that many poor people arrive in rugs to the shoe shops to buy trainers that are over $100.000.!!!!
I am really sad about my country. I wish we ´d have a king of estate like in Sweeden where the government is in charge of about 50% of people´s salary and they give them first class education and health insurance (at least that is what i have heard) so that they make sure to manage the expenditure in a good way, that is, first things first. Well. that is my opinion-

Anyway, pokemones do not constitute the majority of Chilean teenagers
Comment: Im 15 and as my whole school IM NOT POKEMON. Pokemones are only the emergent class, they are poor unprincipled people that is earning more money. Im not narrow minded and i accept them, they can do whatever they want but i will not accept that they put all the young chileans as promiscuis persons. Why dont you show also the good side?Young people as me who waste their vacations helping poor people and that are virgin.
Comment: As a chilean young boy,im 15, and like my whole school IM NOT POKEMON,i can swear you that not all the young chileans are pokemones, only the emergent class, poor people unprincipled that is earning more money and having access to more things than their parents. There are a lot of normal guys, of course! if you go ñuñoa or maipu as this journalist you wil find pokemones but they are one urban tribe in the whole country.wholecountry,
Comment: I hear about this on tv, and now I have to read it in Newsweek? Gosh.
I apologize in behalf of all chilean youths who are shown as latin-trash. We're not all like this, I swear. It's only the young-and-confused that gather in the same spot every wednesday and friday.
They don't have sex in public (just this girl who was recorded on camera having oral sex in a park -maybe there's more, but as a stroller you don't see them doing anything else than taking pictures and acting stupid, hugging, drinking and smoking pot.)
This article makes all teenagers look bad; from the title to the last line.
It's true they're promiscous and loud; they look funny and stole jap-pop-culture away from us (another urban tribe -visual-); but they were pushed to be like this by their unsupportive parents who work all day.
Comment: sd
Comment: This is disgusting... they're almost acting like Americans!
Comment: @ eliseoncoke The fact you haven't seen them having sex in a public place...well, doesn't mean they're not more likely to do so (privately) due to engagin in ponceo. Still, just kissing stangers is quite sad I'd say. They're still an idiot group with absolutely no stance on life.
Comment: By the way, "poncear" means kissing a lot of people in one night/day. NOT SLEEPING WITH THEM.
This article is embarrasing and whoever wrote it should go back to journalism school, because the first thing you should do when writing an article is CHECK YOUR SOURCES.
The information contained here is absolutely false, and I never thought I'd find this kind of article in a serious magazine such as Newsweek.
I'm not a huge fan of pokemones, because I believe they don't add anything of value to our society, but not liking them is no excuse for difamation.
Comment: Whoever wrote this is definitely unprofessional because they forgot the most important thing to do when writing an article: CHECK THE SOURCES.
Us chileans are surrounded by all these urban tribes, and most kids belong to this pokemones thing, but I've NEVER seen them have sex in a public place. In fact, the term "poncear" means kissing different people in one night, NOT having sex with them.
Comment: .... this article is far from the reality that occurs in chile with the pokemones. Am Chilean, I've seen them in the parks, and seriously, the author of this article has absolutely no clue what he/she is writing about. Please stop making up articles without real information. Thanks

In general. The fact that years ago chilean youth was more conscious is undeniable. The ???pokemones??? and in general, all urban tribus are the reflect of a consumer society.
The first thing that really shocked me was the fact that an international magazine actually cares about something so insignificant as ???pokemones???, there are many problems and interesting things to write about and a ???journalist??? (I???m not sure if who wrote this was a professional) made this article with wrong information and generalizing about Chilean youth.
The article says that Chilean youth is consumer and their parents (who actually belonged to the conscious generation that fought for a better country) are conservative, attributing them the responsibility of their sons behaviour. What do these teenagers consider really important? I think that the answer is just one: call the attention, and here media plays a really important role. That???s why we find TV programs that are just dedicated to pokemones and other urban tribus.
Finally, what a shame the tittle! It make people think that we (Chilean youth) are kind of sexual maniacs that can???t see the real problems and that totally false. Why can???t you write an article about ???revolución pingüina??? and how it affected Chilean education? That???s something that only you can answer.

Comment: I'm chilean and I don´t know a lot about "pokemones", I don´t even like them but I can't stand those kind of lies; maybe they`re not interested in politics and they just want to have fun, but..."having sex in a public place???" What a lie! I can´t believe this...If you really want to write about something, you have to inform youserlves first...I thought you took your job seriously...but now I can realize that I was wrong.

Comment: I have to say that this is far from being true. I'm chilean too, and I dislike these 'urban tribes' like pokemones, but... they don't have sex in public places or stuff like that. Please, if you're going to write something like this, try to inform yourselves first. Have you ever been here? have you ever seen in person the stuff you're writing about? Shame on you, people. This is disgusting. What's the point?.
Comment: how dare you to lie about pokemosns in chile , I am not a pokemon , and IO'm a chilean and I can give you my word that such thing has never taklen place here !!
Comment: how dare you say such lie about pokemones in chile you should feel ashamed!!
Comment: I AM CHILEAN, I am young and POKEMONA but I don´t go just having sex in public places. This is bullsh*t and is far from the reality!
America is the one who has all this sex health problems because they are used to inter exchange sexual partners every day.
Comment: well, it is true, pokemos are everywhere doing everything but they have limits, for example they "poncean" thats means that they have differents partners to kiss and do something extra but not always in public places, they kiss each other everywhere but they do not have sex everywhere unless now because once a girl had oral sex in a public park, this video went to YouTube and the girl was expulsed of the school and now has no friends, so they are carefull about this.
about the relation with the political thing.... it is not a revolution because of the politics they are against the society thay want to have the attention of people next to them, because normally they are boys and girls that grown alone and their parents never give the attention that they need.
Comment: To be a pokemon is just a reflect of our society. How do you expect a
combatient, concious or naturalist youth if we have a consumist society
who don´t concern anymore about figthing against the materialim or the
power...
Ponceo, raggaeton, big hairs, expensive cell phones and empty minds
are real. It´s just that and is smthg impossible to stop so get
use to, because probably the new fashion can be better.

Comment: Hey!!! come on! what's that? Pokemones don't always have sex in public places , they just "poncean". I'm 22 yaers old and I'm not pokemona or something like that, I mean, I don't belong any "urban tribus", but I don't have nothing against this kind of teens, I think they are teens who wants to prove to society that they are part of this. It's time to react and fight for what they want. Now with this kind of rebelion they are hear by their families and the society.
On one hand society discriminate these teens in the way they look and the new words that they're invented. On the other hand, most of people, specifically, the media has profited of pokemones, I could see this in summer when all channels of television showed urban tribus in their programs. I think pokemones have the right to do what they want but without excess.
Comment: Even though i agree that the article is a bit exegerated, i don't think that this new trend and the related sex behavior is nothing to be worry about or, that it is a possitive response to pinochet's tyrannical gorverntment.
I think it's a shame that after all the struggle and suffer chilian people had to go through, the fallowing generation shows itself to be unpolitical, materialistic and shalow. It's normal, but it's a shame.
On the other hand, i think the article is exegerated because the "pokemones" trend has been blown out of proportions by the media and not because of the "public orgies" the article mentions. "These "orgies" are mostly about kissing and making out, just like all past generations have done since biblical times.
I think these kids have been taken adventage of by the media and teenage brands.
Comment: time ago, young people were more conciuos about the problems the country had, in chile this trend is being exterminated.. the thing i don´t like about this tribe is that the just care about superficial and fleeting stuff. in chile there are many problems and most of youn people are not engaged with it. for example, the public transport has been having a lot of fails, years ago youth protest and had opinion about important things, but now, with all that hair they cannot even see the bus when it´s coming.
i don´t care if the like to have sex with everybody, it´s their life...
but i would like that youth were more concious and i wouldn´t like that this superficial trend continue, because they have to be worried about having a better future.
Comment: pokemon is like a sickness and it is spreading so fast that we aren't going to be ready to stop this in the future. i think one of the main problems we can see is that parents can't control their own children.
And this is not related with augusto pinochet, why is his name always used by the international news?

Comment: why do I appear as migueloso?
i am Leslie :P
Comment: I dont agree with all this , i mean yes there are pokemones and they do "poncean" but the are not having sex in streets i think .. it is justo kissing eachother ; i dont like those kids i think they are empty minded they have a long way to grow up but i think who wrote this is overreacting.
Also, they use to be at parties with reggeton music and not in streets what i believe it is ridiculous is the way they dress i mean they look like punk rockers lol with tinted hairs and piercings but they have nothing to do with the way they are , think or live .. so empty !!! so vany and so lost and confused but well, i hope they have a chance to realise and grow up :) but far away from me i can´t stand them lol :P
Comment: Oh my...this is too much. Yes there are pokemones in chile... yes they do ponceo.. but IT's just kissing around with a bunch of people, it's not like there're having sex on the streets. the author is completely overreacting. I'm chilean, i'm not pokemon and i have nothing agains them 'cause they're just a bunch of kids looking for attention like any other trend, they're like emos a few time ago. And as i see it, it has nothing to do with politics or religion or anything this lame article says... it's just a way to dress up and wear makeup.
I think this shows to the world a bad image of chilean youth that not applies to most of us (i'm 17) ...at least i've never seen that at the parks and i live here so.. make your own conclusions.
Comment: "... i have nothing *against* ..."
sorry =]
Comment: my english is really bad .. xD
Comment: i´m chilean too, i´m 16 and i´m not pokemon.. not all the youth of chile is pokemona, i think this article sucks, you should investigate a little bit more before speake bad about a country, because you show us like wild people who do whatever he wants in the streets, oral sex on a park?? i´ve never seen that. Beside, you say that pokemones dress like that to show rebelliousness, a contrast whit the militar period and they have no idea about all that.. they look like that because they want to.. they want to be deferent.. and they like that style.. NOT ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN CHILE IS LIKE THAT , so next time you want to write something about us please take a look around.. and investigate more.
Comment: I'm a young women from Chile and although i have nothing against pokemones in a personal level, because i haven't met any of them individually, i do think it's really sad how they portray an image about chilean youth which doesn't aply to must of us. Pokemones are mostly teenagers between 13 and 19 years old, with no convictions about religion, politics or any other important matter, as they say, they are only having fun, most of them only following a common trend to be accepted among friends. I dont believe they're trying to make any political statement, i doubt they even know how long Pinochet was "president". They only represent a part of our youth, defined by certains factors such as education and social and economic status; they intend to pass as a social movement, but they're nothing more than a mob following a trend, and i know it will pass soon, as it often happens in our country, where everytime something knew appears a lot of young people tend to feel atracted and sallowed by it, which only proves how little conviction they have and how they are in need of belonging to some group, even thogh it has nothing meaningful to offer. They surely can't be compared to hippies or punks, who actually had a cause behind all their styles and actions. I just hope people won't label chileans based on a group such as pokemones, and i certainly hope they disappear soon, for the sake of my country and future generations who might see them as a role model.
Comment: Well I'm chilean also, I KNOW that my country is totally label for this new urban tribe, IT SUCKS really.. it's a total degreement of being a human been.. although there's still normal people (teenager like me) who really hate pokemones, you should add that in there we PUNCH'EM IN DA FACE and some other urban tribes anti-pokemones mess with them for cry and make out in the streets and public places and rip off their piercings, it's all awful.
They also are now mostly in the capital, into the MANOSEO which means touching and grabbing female sexual parts and ... well dunno what females do.. but it's worst than ponceo.
Pokemones usually DON'T HAVE THE SLIGHEST IDEA of what pokemon means, IT MEAN "Hi, I dress with emo style, I use hairspray and get ready to go out for an hour, I get pierced and I wear skater sportshoes when I've never been on a skateboard, BUT THEY ARE COOL NOW, so I do everything my other pokemons friends do, because my too damn hormons want me to, also I don't even care that I dress like emo (the music style) and I only dance reggaetton because It leads to manoseo and ponceo, I've never been with a girl or a boy more than 3 hours in a afternoon"
I think it's really ok the information you got, I just wanted to add this. I know you know there's still normal people or even better people here that are totally against them, not only gown ups, but people like me, I personal think that being pokemon is just an excuse or if you preffer a disguss to make out with a total stranger without even care and dress like you know anything about style or fashion. xD
Lov ya. xD
Konstanza
Comment: What the hell is wrong with you? I'm a chilean youth, and proud of it , but...CHILE IS MORE THAN POKEMONES AND PONCEO! and i don't feel iddentificated with pokemones at all.. so don't globalize . I know the mostly part of teenagers are pokemones. But i'm "normal" also my friends. i just know a few people who is "pokemon" but not all pokemon people usually practise ponceo.. It's ok, but ... NOT ALL TEENAGERS ARE POKEMONES!! I know my city. There is NO ORGIES. So.. get informed before you want suck a country..
{I'm 12, that's why my english sucks as your journal ;D}
Comment: Comment: really... "ponceo" it's about making out, and it's not even that common on "pokemones", some of them do it, and it's not even that "weel seen" by their pairs. I think this is a very bad investigated report, "pokemones" are just like the emo kids on u.s.a who based their lives on myspace and panic at the disco, in chile those kids care too much about their fotologs and reggaeton, it's kind of a promiscuise music but they don't dance like the "boricuas" it's pretty much a robotic dance... it kind of sucks, but it's not that big of a deal, and i think every teenagers in the world do things like making out and drinking, mostly at lease, it's part of growing up... i mean... Degrassi? As if? 90210? They are only tv hows, but tv is a reflection of reality... newsweek... why don't you write about "pelo lais" thay are like neo nazis but whit a sense of fashion.

Comment: VIVA PIÑERA, QUE SALGA BASEHELET Q ESTO NO ES CHACRA XD.
Comment: God, it always has to do with Pinochet for the international media, doesn't it? I don't believe I've read more than 3 Chile-related articles authored by foreign reporters that don't mention the militar dictatorship somewhere along the text. Despite what foreign countries may believe, Chilean public opinion is torn with regards to this topic (as in, not everybody believes it to have been Chile's "Dark Age" or something of the sort) and there's is more definitely not a "specter" of the "autoritarian regime" hovering over every single matter in this country. Yes, human rights were disrespected, and yes, some people were murdered, but this also happened in plenty of other countries during that period of time. It was called the Cold War.
Regardless, not everything Chilean has to do with Pinochet.
Comment: Beyond that, I do believe this article was catchy and well-informed. Though in my experience (I'm eighteen years old and most "pokemones" are my contemporaries) this trend has a lot to do with the search for a feeling of belonging. Teenagers these days want to be unique and special-- while some choose to reflect and develop their ideas in order to do so, some content themselves with expressing their "uniqueness" outwards. Now there's nothing wrong with having a separate style of clothing or hair-styling, but it is somehow upsetting when such physical demonstrations aren't accompanied by any kind of opinion or thought process. This is the case of "pokemones".
Kids my age are used to having their thinking made by others (may those be their parents, their teachers, etc) and when they rebel, they don't adopt any kind of alternative thinking but rather simply go in the exact opposite direction of what they're told. They many times jump right into the arms of the media and popular trends, without realizing that these are mentality-shapers too.
Generally, following a urban tribe such as the "pokemones" is a reflection of teenager's unwillingness to fend for themselves in a world in which they must begin to take responsibility after their own image and opinions. It's easier and more comfortable to adopt a cultural trend that's already carved itself a place in the world, than to carve your own.
Comment: aaand it doesn't have anything to do with liberalism
Comment: i'm chilean, and i think this article is way too shallow
pokemones doesn't have anything to do with politics, religion or wathever...there's just this bunch of moron who start doing something onto a disco, then they'll be imitated by the others, finally this thing spreads like a
virus, and that's how ponceo was born...that and the fact of having such a brain-rotting television which just shows this "style" as the coolest thing to young boys and girls who are looking for an identity or some way to fit with the others...
if you seek well in youtube, you'll se that there's no person who can be pokemon and smart at the same time
and if a small group likes the idea of sticking bottles themselves into their...(use your imagination)
have for sure that the rest of them will be doing it soon
and please, stop showing this thing into international media...that'll make them more atractive to the kids who are just to beginning their "style" decisions
Comment: "Ponceo" means "Kissing with anyone, even if you don't know them". Although I'm against it, if you call kissing strangers "public sex and orgies" then you're overreacting. What happens here in Chile is not any different from any western country, where youth doesn't care about politics and just having fun. If you don't think so, then you're living in a bubble. And ain't a political based. It's like saying that agnosticism is another religion... If you keep on writing biased opinions, then newsweek's journalist are good for nothing.
Comment: I agree that this Newsweek article is newsWEAK. This report is certainly exaggerating and not thoroughly researched (although it is well written and obviously and effectively persuasive) reducing itself to tabloid headlines and not totally accurate phrasing; however, having looked over all the comments posted I have to also denounce you people that are trying to defend Chile as a nation (with your variety of excuses) and trying to say that it has nothing to do with politics or Pinochet. And although this is indeed related to the parenting of these kids, it is most certainly a political issue and it ALWAYS has to do with Pinochet and the influence he (and his ties) had on Chile.
Again, (as I tried to say in my previous posting) my point is that these kids are to be held accountable for their truancy and for their wasting of precious time, regardless of what it is or not that they do while sitting at the park taking pictures of themselves to post on Fotolog.
If they lived only miles away in one of their neighboring and struggling countries for a day or two they'd be surprised at how spoiled they actually are even though this entire society, even themselves, stereotypes Chile to be another not-so-well-off country...
Still, I feel Chile was much richer BEFORE. During a time Chile considers to be low.. low and poor. But in that time, that lowly lowly time, what you would see in that same park in front of the museum of fine arts was a gathering of young street performers and young enthusiasts of performance art, installation design, music, drama, etc....... kids who wanted to change the world and did. Through protests, and civil demonstrations, soapbox lectures and flier distribution: the good word was spread. Art and learning was propagated and change was motivated. That is what made Chile a very rich nation, and sometimes you can still see a little bit of that when you walk past the park even in the midst of these losers wasting their precious time- you can still see it and know that it will emerge again and take over again and show why Chile is STILL and ALWAYS will be a very RICH nation

Comment: Unfortunately the article tries to describe a snapshot of the reality of the well known continuous video of our youth???s life. This phenomenon is not new at all, and cannot be described neither explained as an isolated fact. If you take a minute and look for ???EMO??? on Google or Wikipedia, you may quickly find in this hardcore punk music???s fashion stereotype a tremendous similarity with Pokemones. So, sorry dudes, but you are not unique. (And sorry to the reporter, you have discovered nothing new).
I think it has nothing to do with sex. History has shown up many times groups of people around dress codes, hair style, music and ???sex-behavior??? like Punks, Rappers, Hip-Hoppers, Hippies, etc. and we cannot simplify their existence to sex-drive. In fact, I didn???t consider myself as a part of any of those groups but of course I had opinion, dress likes, music likes and had a time where I discovered sexuality with behaviors I may regret or at least not been so proud of.
We have to give kids more opportunities, channels to express and activities to do after school. They are screaming a loud silence??? because if you put a microphone on them, unfortunately, they have nothing to say.
Why they are so popular? Easy. Remember that Global not only comes for Global Warming. We do have Internet ??? with their blogs, chats and forums and now is easy to get to know each other and adhere to the groups. And definitely in their minds there is no other chance to get known. Is our task to give them the chance to achieve goals and get acknowledgement in other fields. (Sports, arts, culture, etc).
And finally, fellow bloggers, please, we are in the 21th century. It has nothing to do with Pinochet.
Comment: what are these kids going to see in themselves when they're 25... 30? still living with their parents because they were too preoccupied with their "fashion" in their teens? they're going to say, "what happened? I'm a loser now" and they'll realize they were ALWAYS losers hanging at the park outside the museum never even entering to maybe learn something, thinking at the time that what they are doing is some sort of status- some perverse sense of popularity or even belonging- but what else will they have to show for it except a bunch of holes and markings on their body they'll wish they never had... they're just wasting away not even looking into their own parents who were a part of a REAL revolution in their time and spent THEIR energy on something PRODUCTIVE!!! viva chile!! and don't worry, nation, this ephemeral generation of losers will pass through like a bowel movement
Comment: Its not about politic, nor about sex. Its about family, or lack of family ties... We are living an age where the people, the goverment and all the cultural movement are always able to talk about rights and freedoms more not about responsabilties. As Viktor Frankl said many years ago: we need two greats statues in each coast, the Liberty Lady in the east, but another too in the west, to the Responsabilty.
Today, that absence of balance is killing our roots, and our new generations.
The parental authority is day by day getting weak, and all those kids are considered like adults. and just a consumers. If you say something different you would be considered a pre modern person, a contracultural creature...a conservative. But, somebody can be so surprised with this kind of behavi ours if many of those kids goes to parties from 12 y/o, until 3 or 4 am many days during the week, consumig alcohol without contol, or going back to their homes quite alone and drunked, doing auto stop in our streets? Where are those fathers and mothers? Too busy maybe.
All of us have watched this kind of scene. We can be so cinic to claim now to the heaven for the "ponceo".
I another hand you have the terryble lack of values in the formal education provided for the schools, even the privates ones. No ideals, no goals, no heroes, no dreams, no limits. Its awful, but the stupidity and ignorance is elevated as something cool everywhere. A symbol of this if UCTV, the tv channel of the chilean catholic church. The most important shows talk about beautiful people swinging couple almost everyday, stimulating the morbo and the lack of compromise for nationwide chain.
Finally, I think that the "ponceo" and all the phenomenon associated is just a sympton of our decadence like society. Is possible to get a change in that path? definetely yes. But we need to find a north more encouraging that just get money and to accumulate things. Chile has forgotten the sense of greatness, the meaning of "republica", denying this way all the best dreams for the youngest people, those who prefer just having a selfdestructive fun to believe and to compromise with a better world.
Comment: Oh come on, trying to blame neoliberal system, or the politics that Augusto Pinochet took during his dictatorship is ridicolous. There are many more problems that are really that importants with this topic, for example the conservator moral that's today ruling Chile and the rebellion of young people who dont wan't to accept terms being imposed almost by religious holy-holydivine force. and to Mister Pablo Gonzalez, And to mister Pablo Gonzales, how can you blame Piñera for bringing the credits cards to Chile? There is a very complex cultural context in wich they were inserted, and saying that just because of them there are pokemons and with the neoliberal system they are increasing it's just REALLY missing the point. There is, like it or not, a serious problem in the identity of young chileans and pointing to economics wont solve that, it's just an excuse to critizice politics that we dont "seem" to like.
Comment: jajajajaja wake up, cuicos!!!!!!!!
Comment: i think everyone is all missing the topic here, why dont nobody talk about the consumerism?? so if its called ponceo o sobajeo, the problem is that this happens, and more often than you wealthy chileans want to admit!! and it is connect to the wealth situation and the fact that we are in bad debt. ... did you only read the first page of the article?? there are 3!!! why we arent talking about piñera and what he does? and if you re-read pablo's comment, he said that we chileans are smart enough to accept that sometimes things happen in our country even if we personally dont witness them! that we can defend chile without saying its a perfect country. all of the argument now is not about the important things like sexual diseases, and that is what our country needs to be talking about, we need to repair our education to make sure teenager know about sexual diseases, and for those ones who say this doesnt happen, try going outside las condes or where ever you live to some neighborhoods you dont go, and then talk about this. and this is on the chile news all the time, why is some people saying that it dont exist?? it makes our country look bad if we there is an article in a gringa revista and we deny its true when we all know its true, make us look like we cant accept things and that we dont want to develop our country and improve the situation...
Comment: I absolutely agree with Paulo specially, because as I already said in another comment Pokemones don't have orgies, and PONCEO it's JUST KISSING, SOBAJEO it's the new fashion between them and it's about having sex with their clothes put on and they do it in public places, it's embarassing but it's true, so Ashly it's just misundertading and exaggerating the facts, Do you really think that police would let them have orgies in public places? With children walking by the streets and things like that? Come on!
An about "The teens call their public orgies ponceo" This is a mistake because it's not Ponceo and they don't have orgies it's Sobajeo, (and it's suppose is a kind of sex with clothes) so if she doesn't know about what we are talking about, Why instead of give us an wrong article don't she investigate better about this tribe? Specially about a foreing country.
And as Pablo said we are quiet people and we are aware of what happens in our country, so thank you very much to all the chileanv and people who defend chile and support us.

Comment: This article seems a bit "rebuscada". Steinberg uses the description of one urban tribe, to sketch several aspects of Chilean culture, such as the neoliberal market, the country's catholic backround, the lack of sexual education in Chile compared to in the States. And of course it's almost an obligation to mention Augusto Pinochet in an article about Chile that's written for US readers. Even so, I found it mildly interesting, if only because it???s an article on pokemones for Newsweek. Although she forgot to mention that pokemones like to dance to reggaeton and Naty la wena... Also I read that pokemon was chosen because it's inspired by or akin to the EMO movement and coincidentally Japanime is popular in this same group so the chose to call themselves pokEMOnes. I also have the idea that the movement was kind of started in contrast to the pelolais girls-the thin, blonde-haired, European looking, well-to-do chilean high-schoolers, but maybe this isn't true. But originally these two groups were reported in the Chilean media at the same time, and as contrasting each other with different ideas of beauty as well as different values.
Comment: I d "Sobajeo" they I don't like pokemones so I don't really care what they do, but in spite of this I would like to say something to the ignorant person who wrote all this article and specially for those who believe that Pokemones made orgies, because this is the most ridicouls thing that I've ever read!!!!!!!!!!!! First Pokemones have a stupid thing called "Sobajeo" and this means to all of them "touching with their clothes put on and have a kind of "sex" to avoid the pregnancy in the young women and enjoy the pleasure they got of all this", this is really ridicoulous on my opinion, but still it have a lot of sense because at least they are aware and make something useful avoiding the pregnacy and this "orgies" are just the Sobajeo they made unfortunataly not just in parties they also do it in parks BUT THEY DOESN'T HAVE ORGIES as the exaggerated who wrote that article said and if you don't believe then why you don't look for the real meaning of all this? I'am not defending the Pokemones because on my opinion they are the worst of chilean society, but...
I also understand that they are just kids who haven't grew up and have got a lot of troubles probably with their sexual education or maybe with their families and think in politics issues relationed to this is really stupid, because it doesn't have any relation.
And about the japanase animation, it doesn't have any relation with the pokemones except for name that they got from there and that as an anime fan it's a shame... so please don't mix the things.
And altough Pokemones are one of the negative aspect of my country, Chile, there are many wonderful things that doesn't have any relation with these pokemones that are one of the urban tribe that is here.
Ah! And by the way I would like to remind you that a country is not just formedby an urban tribe, a country is formed by its inhabitants, and in my country there are many people who belong to different tribes, some of them have a very good heart and without mattering their beliefs or how they look like, they are nice people open-mind and they never discriminate, generalize or exaggerate as you have done with this article.
Comment: My friend just got back from Chile and said that he loved it (he did not mention any orgies). I'm sure that now my wife is going to accuse me of planning a vacation to Chile for the orgies.
Kids have always found ways to act wild and have sex (and they always will). I wouldn't worry about this doing any permanent damage to Chile (or the world's perception of Chileans). It will fade pretty soon...then pop up somewhere else in a few years.
Comment: I'm pretty worried about it, because i'm friend of a couple of people who call themselves "pokemones" i think is stupid a lame that boys a girls, threat themselves so bad, they are only 14 to 17 years old, they are ruining their lives doing that stupid things, one day they will regret about it, probably late.. i fell so sorry for them.
and the worst, most all chilean people think that everyone who dressed diferent or act diferrent, had dyed hair and stuff are "pokemones".. they make look bad not enly themselves, they're making look bad other teenagers that look like them but they really have no connection with them.
is too lame that the furute of my country look like this.

Comment: Pokemones arte lost, they nedd help now. The thema is not about the politic or the society but is about them.
Comment: Pokemones are changing the society with their manner of living the life, without worries and looking the positiv side of the life. This is not about the politic.
Comment: I am a chilean female young, and I think that situation is very sad, but I do not believe all the information in this news. and I do not care this topic, Can you do news really importantÖÖ
Comment: there any many things that you can say about this urban tribe call "pokemones" , im from chile and usually when i see a "pokemon" in the street i laugh at him but some of the thing that you present in this article are not entirelly the truth, for example what i understand about ponceo, its not oral sex like you said, its only kisses, maybe the girls give a lot of kisses but you make them seem like they're much worse than they really are otherwise you really think that they would be practising oral sex in the street?
i just think you're are triying to make chilean people look worse than they really are, specially when you try to conect pokemones with political isssues that happen in our country, also you must not mistake pokemones with anime fans, they are two different things. Its ok, i admit it here in chile we have lot of "urban tribes" that are forming sense not so long ago, but that doesn't mean that our teenagers are all ruined and our people only care about buying things, times are changing an people just not to find their identity.

Comment: mmmmm.......it's really sad all this situation in Chile, it's seems like no body cares about her knowledge, or try to do something productive. Pokemones don't do anything by themselves, in fact in chile they aren't considerer, i mean, they are being discriminated by other people.
Comment: You might live here, in Santiago, Rodraga, but let me tell you something. I'm 17 years old... I happen to live with this people. Surely you don't even go on the streets, on your beautiful car and stuff. I walk, and take the bus and all that, and I've NEVER seen "orgies" on the streets. THAT doesn't happen. They are weird, true, but they don't have sex on the streets. If you happen to know everything by the news, then you're lost. It's been long since everyone knows chilean TV is full of crap. So if you're getting all your infromation from there, your opinion's a bit distorted.
Comment: I have to say this. Some guys posting on this article say that this is not happening or that is not accurate. Well im a 26 year old chilean and i've lived my entire life on santiago. And this article is reporting the exact thing that i hear on the news, and see on videos on youtube, or tv. this is not an invention and it disgusts most of the people i know of my age. Witch brings me to my point: My generation witch u could consider as an intermediate one in between pokemones and their parents, is as disgusted as our parents by there behavior. I did participate in some urban tribes myself at some point. grounge, hiphop, punk and others were common when i was their age, but all of those had either a music tendency, or a political point of view, or both. these guys simply dont have a saying on anything, they are screaming to the world (like so many other groups) that they dont agree with the standarts of this society. The difference is that in this case they do it in a way that shocks us more than their predesesors because it involves the greatest taboo of our society, witch is liberal sex. Dont get me wrong im not justifying their doings.
Juts one last thing, that the reporter missed, this urban tribe grows and exists only in the lower and midle lower social classes of this country. nevertheless it affects society as a whole.
P.S.: excuse my spelling, i know it blows
Comment: This article is only garbage. Orgies in parks of Santiago? Do you really think that the carabineros (police) would let that happen? And don't you think if this orgies are really happening in the streets the news wouldn't talk about this? So why i never seen something like that in the newspaper, tv, etc.? (I know...my english is horrible)

Comment: Dude, the reporter describes only ONE public orgy. That's what she witnessed. She does not say this is happening all over Santiago in every park - it's you who's coming to that conclusion. You've admitted your English is horrible. That explains your bad reading of the article. Try reading the piece again. Slowly, this time.
Comment: No, thanks ^^ I understand english very well ^^ My only problem is that i can't express myself very well. You are the one who have to read the article again. She literally say "The teens call their public orgies ponceo" wich is not true at all. Oh! Maybe she's the one that have to learn spanish so she can make a decent article next time.
Comment: "The teens call their public orgies ponceo"
I address that line in depth right here you hotshot English-reader:
http://c.hileno.com/2008/03/chile-pokemon-pinochet-teen-sex-culture.html
Comment: POWER TO THE POKEMON! ORGIES FOR EVERYONE! Maybe that's what this world needs. More blurred lines and more orgasms. Honestly ppl, if you don't like to know about other peoples sexual habits, don't read articals about it. I aplaud these people for being themselves and doing what they like. They know the risks and they are doing it by power of choice. And if I knew the people myself I would probably join in the festivities. Go for it and love life. it don't last long!
Comment: exaclty , I think you got the point, although pokemones don't think themselves as doing
a politcal stament, and they don't care to do it, they are expresing a new way to be,
in a country where having fun has been always kind of a guilty pleasure, they making a
stament saying that just want to have fun, in catholic and tradicional country where
divorce was ilegal only few years ago, they are making a stament with their open mind
related sex beheviour , being gay or being gay or *** now it ust an option , not a sin
as their parents think, I live in santiago and 10 years ago it was still a sad city, the
parks were empty green areas full of signal saying "don`t walk through the green" , now
is full of young kids kissing each other, what a lovely change . Don`t know if is true
but I heard that one of the reason the call their selves "Pokemones" i becosue like the
characteres int japanese cartoon they evolution . Regard other post saying that this
has nothing to do with Pinochet, it definitly does, 20 years ago santiago was a city
where you could get killed if you didn`t agree with the goberment, that cast a horrible
and sad shadow, that sadow pokemoes are scaping from. There consumist, irresponsible with no other preocupation than having fun, great, we need more of that, that is evolution.
