Newsweek had three sources to choose from for the estimated Iraqi civilian deaths: a peer-reviewed study published in one of the oldest and most respected research journals in the world, a survey conducted by a respected British independent polling agency, and some web site. Newsweek chose the web site.

I have a very difficult time believing the audacity of GWB as represented by the things he unconscionably offers for people to accept. We should never forget that the War in Iraq (as with so many other things they present) was falsely justified (obviously intentionally, again as with so much else, for the sole benefit of a few) and it has cost us so greatly (in lives, dollars, neglected other things - not the least of being the pursuit of Osama bin Laden and more) else the subterfuge offered begins to sound valid and we are then open to further manipulation.

Why don't America elect Barack Hussein Obama as President so he and his anti American friends can have a real party. Then the terriost can come over to America and destroy us more than they did on 9/11.
Especially since Obama and His pastor thanks that it is ok to say G D America. I am sure all of them can just around together, Rezdo, farranhkan, Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, Rev. Meeks and obama in the oval office and say G D America all the time.

It's time we stop telling the world, you can believe in who you please, as long as it's within our standards, and rebuild our country!!! History!
Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency program to arm the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, 1979 to 1989.[1]. The Program relied heavily on using the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as an intermediary for funds distribution. Along with funding from similar programs from Britain's MI6 and SAS, Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of China[citation needed], the ISI armed and trained over 100,000 insurgents between 1978 and 1992. Somewhere between $3???$20 billion in US funds were funneled into the country to train and equip troops with weapons, including Stinger man-portable air-defense systems.

26 Aug 1988 SA-7On July 3, 1979, U.S. President Carter signed a presidential finding authorizing funding for anticommunist guerrillas in Afghanistan.[2] Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and installation of a more pro-Soviet president, Babrak Karmal, Carter announced "The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is the greatest threat to peace since the Second World War".[3] American funding started with 20-30 million dollars per year in 1980 and rose to $630 million a year in 1987.[4]

The US government has been criticized for allowing Pakistan to channel a disproportionate amount of its funding to controversial Afghan resistance leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar,[5] who Pakistani officials believed was "their man".[6] Hekmatyar has been criticized for killing other mujahideen and attacking civilian populations, including shelling Kabul with American-supplied weapons, causing 2,000 casualties. Hekmatyar was said to be friendly with Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda, who was running an operation for assisting "Afghan Arab" volunteers fighting in Afghanistan, called Maktab al-Khadamat (MAK). Alarmed by his behavior Pakistan leader General Zia warned Hekmatyar that "It was Pakistan that made him an Afghan leader and it is Pakistan who can equally destroy him if he continues to misbehave".[7] According to a Newsweek article, in the late 1980s, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, concerned of the growing strength of the Islamist movement, told President George H. W. Bush, "You are creating a Frankenstein". Author Gilles Kepel reports that American funding of Hekmatyar and his Hezbi Islami party was cut off immediately following the withdrawal of the Soviets.[8]

The U.S. says all of its funds went to native Afghan rebels and denies that any of its funds were used to supply Osama bin Laden or foreign Arab mujahideen. It is estimated that 35,000 foreign Muslims from 43 Islamic countries participated in the war.[9][10][11][12]

Sale of non-US arms to Pakistan for destination to Afghanistan was facilitated by Israel.

Your magazine has taken enough looks at the "deadly toll" Why don't you write an article about how Iraq is beginning to turn around and all the progress being made there. Pay special attention to the fact that their economy is improving, schools, hospital and markets are opening agian and people walk the streets without fear again for the first time in years because the terrorists have been pushed out. Talk about how the oil wells are running again and soon will begin paying to rebuild their infrastructure. Whether you want to believe it or not, Iraq is getting better everyday thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the American military and countless Iraqi's. Write an article about that for a change, OK?? Give your magazine some balance because most of us are sick of the "deadly toll" articles and would like some truth for a change.

You are one misguided person. For five years the situation has been improving, according to those who still support the biggest blunder of the US in decades. You are obviously a Republican. I apologize to my Republican brothers and sisters who put country before party. Wake up, the only ones in the world who don't see the truth, are the Americans who think it is unpatriotic to disagree with the path of the current administration in domestic, as well as foreign policy. It is time to focus on the issues at home, and allow the Iraqi people to find their own balance and solutions. We, the American people, have got to stop listening to the media and our politicians, and think for ourselves. We have the ability to create change, but if we are divided as we have been, our fractures will only grow wider.

Ha! Nice to know that schools, hospitals, and markets are opening in Iraq, and that their economy is improving. Meanwhile all of these things are on the downturn in our own country. Homeland Security at its best. What a joke.
Oh and you really think that Iraqis are skipping down the streets, holding hands, unafraid? Please! You can read or watch any major news source on any given day and see that large groups were kidnapped, slaughtered, blown up, or simply shot in the streets. Is that your definition of walking the streets without fear?
Most of us aren't sick of the "deadly toll" articles. Those in that deadly toll are AMERICANS--someone's brother, father, sister, daughter, mother, etc. If your husband or brother got blown up, you'd be singing a different tune. That toll is not just a number. Each of those THOUSANDS killed was a human being. You disgust me.

A current Newsweek article headline states that Obama "Isn't American Enough." Readers should be aware that Senator Obama recently received the endorsement of several Flag Officers from the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard. These Admirals and Generals have served under the last nine Commanders-in-Chief. They are all are backing Obama in the belief that he will best uphold the traditions and strengths of the American military. Between them, they have over 300 years of military experience:

Brigadier General Larry Gillespie (Army), Major General Scott Gration (Air Force), Admiral Don Guter (Navy), Brigadier General David McGinnis (National Guard), General Merrill McPeak (Air Force), Admiral John B. Nathman (Navy), Major General Hugh Robinson, (Army Corps of Engineers) Brigadier General James Smith (Air Force), Admiral Robert Williamson (Navy) and Major General Ralph Wooten (Army).

Navy Admiral Don Guter said "Senator Obama has a profound, even scholarly knowledge of our Constitution and he has the deepest respect for the rule of law. As a career naval officer, I trust his judgment, his temperament, and his ability to analyze complex international situations and relationships and to make military decisions that are in the best long term interests of the United States. It will take the powerful leadership of Senator Obama to forge the consensus we need to right our ship of state, restore our honorable place in the world, and secure the safety of our nation."

Air Force Brigadier General James Smith said "I spent a career involved in coalition warfare, and I am keenly aware of the importance of working with allies. Senator Obama brings a powerful approach to dealing with national security challenges by truly leveraging multinational relationships. He brings a new face of America to the rest of the world."

If Senator Obama wasn't "American enough" do you think these military leaders would support him?

Barack Obama is a GREAT American, and deserves your respect. Read his book The Audacity of Hope and you can only be impressed by his patriotism, his deep thinking on the issues facing our country today.

Whether or not you vote for him is beside the point. I'm a Republican, but I have to stand up and take issue when ignorant people start unfairly smearing the reputation of someone who is so deeply committed to the values of our nation. I would stand up the same for McCain, and have stood up many times in regards to Geo. W. Bush. "W" Bush is obviously not our greatest president, but people who call him "an idiot" (etc.) really don't get it. He's a man who has dedicated his life to our country. So has McCain. So has Obama.

This "issue" is a total non-issue. ALL of the candidates are above reproach in regards to their American patriotism. Let's get on with the real discussion.

Hello, What insanity, and madness. Sure it was worth it for Bush/Cheney, they remain alive, well and rich, while 100,000 Iraqi civilians are dead and a larger number injured and displaced. Think America is 12 times the population of Iraq, meaning 100,000 dead there is equivalent to 1.2 dead in the U.S. Think 9/11 400 times over, or about 2 9/11's in each state for the past 4 years. Imagine that and think of Iraq. LGB
