It Was Always Headed Here

Obama invited some serious thinking, an invitation that's been extended many times in the past.

Comment: True conservatives are not attacking Obama. True conservatives are flocking to Obama. I know a 54 year old conservative republican that thinks Obama is better than the invention of the napkin. That 54 yo is now - get ready for this - is now a democrat that will be voting for Obama in the Pa primary. I know a bunch of conservative republicans that are in fact voting for Obama after switching parties this year. The power elite in the republican party are in for a shock - the conservatives that once followed the republican party did so because they believed in them - now they have no basis for belief in them. The in your face comments about no tolerance for religious conservativism is just what conservative needed to get off their backsides and look for a party that will listen to their views- they don't have to agree with us - but if they will listen to us we will come over in droves. Laugh if you like - but let me tell you... it won't take much to get a ton of conservatives to follow leaders like Obama.

Comment: SueWinks-what kind of a person are you? Who's berating whom? Look at your own words of you want berating. Have you walked a mile in Joe Boroski's shoes? Ms. Rice should apologize for her choice of words. They are hurtful and derogatory. She clearly didn't intend them that way, but she needs to amend them. You missed his point. He said black voters, not *black America* or *the blacks*. Loaded prejudice? What's "your ilk"? And where did he say he wasn't voting for Obama?

I am embarrassed as a young black man that my fellow Obama supporters want to attack people on their tolerance. By doing so, you display your on. I learned a great deal from both of their essays. I heard Ms. Rice's comments as a black man and not as a loving father of a special needs child. She never should have used the term "birth defect". It was and will always be wrong. Imagine what would be happening if Sen Clinton said them?

Comment: There are many Conservatives who think they are forcing Obama to face his demons based on the influence of Reverend Wright. Obama must be the only person who has no free will to reject what he sees or hears. The thinking of the Conservatives who attack Obama on a daily bases is, if you hear racism, then it makes you a racist, if you hear anti American rhetoric, then it makes you anti American. No free will. Obama has become so brainwashed by Reverend Wright, he doesn't know he's brainwashed. We are to believe this is how good Reverend Wright is on training his students to go out and spread his teachings of racism and anti American rhetoric. Obama was going to have to make a speech had the Reverends tapes came out or not. There had to be some reason other then experience and issues to explain why the worlds smartest woman was not favored in the race for the Presidency and a black man was. Obama was provoked to make the speech on race, so it could be latter proved that Obama had racial issues as a result of being influenced by Reverend Wright.

    Comment: Joe Boroski:

You are really too much loaded with prejudice that don't even know it.

You berate Ellis Cose for referring to "the whites" and "white America," and you cannot even see the contradiction in your referring to ???black voters.???

You willfully forfeited the opportunity to think through valuable issues raised in the article, such as how come a man who is 50% white and 50% black is defined as black. Why is he not white? Please, try to think through this question, and please share your thoughts with us. Without confronting a fundamental question as this one, it is impossible for us even to begin to understand what is going on.

I suspect that your ilk would never vote Obama anyway, seeing as you will come up with all kinds of lame excuses not to do so. There are more than enough open-minded white people in this country to elect Obama as president.

    Comment: Dear Mr Cose,

    Thank you for your words.

I resent being referred to as "the whites" or "white America". How is that any different or less racist? You are lumping me into a demographic because of the color of my skin.

Do you not see the inherent bigotry in your own words?

You have no idea how I live my life or my views. I have never used the N word and I hear powerful black leaders using it: Rev. Wright, Rev Meeks and superdelegate, mayor of Detroit, Mr. Kwame Kilpatrick. How is this okay?

Who keeps making this a race issue? Sen Obama's camp. Early on what did the polls say? There was no evidence of racism. Obama was in the lead. He is still in the lead. What has happened? Black voters have backed him because of his continued use of race. How is this any different?

Look at the posts. The hate being spewed. Why must you continue to incite? How are you uniting?

I become angry every time I read stories that segregate me into "white America". That is racist. Period.

Sen Obama made a speech. In it he brought attention to the racial divide that still exists in this country. It was meant to move forward, and has it? No, the insults and racial comments keep coming at "white America".

Can Senator Obama win the presidency without the "white vote"? No, he cannot. I have found all the racially oriented comments extremely offensive, as I would have before this presidential race and certainly before the speech. But saying "white America" is wrong.

Ms Condelezzi Rice's statements were the most despicable I have ever heard. Comparing the color of skin to birth defects? This is outright disgusting. I have a child with a "birth defect". She cannot say, "I love you Mommy, I love you Daddy."

Ms Rice's statements were flat out ignorant. How is she uniting equating her skin color to my Angel???s inability to recognize me as her daddy?

How is this moving forward the discussion? The need for tolerance? The need for kindness? Yes, I do think much less of her as a person. Does it has anything to do with the color of her skin? Absolutely not - it has to do with the color of her soul. Anyone, no matter what race, ethnicity, religion, country of origin, gender who has those words inside her soul cannot be considered kind or tolerant.

I will never forget those words. Forgive, yes. She needs to apologize for those statements to America. To all parents of special needs children. That hateful term birth defect" have gone the way of "Mongoloid" "retard" and many other I will not name.

What I am looking to Sen Obama to tell me is how he will save my job, my house and insure that my little Angel will be cared for after God brings me home.

On "The View" Sen Obama was asked his top three priorities. The economy was not listed. That is what concerns me as an American - not as a "white American". And it should concern all Americans.

    Thank y

Comment: Obama cannot be both hanged as a Muslim, which he's not. Not that that should make any difference. And at the same time lynched for having a controversial Christian minister. Seriously people. If this is your version of logic, no wonder we've had George Bush for 7 years.

And all of those stupid sound bytes were taken out of context. Otherwise Rev. Wright gives the shortest sermons ever. (And we should therefor all praise him for long sermons sucketh !)

And he hasn't even been the preacher at that church for the last three years, he's RETIRED, and he didn't just do it this week or something. He's been retired for a while, like say, three years. And Obama is still going to the same church, so maybe it's the church and not the guy anyway.

Obama's speech more than answered the pressing questions that I had after I first heard the clips of Reverend Wright's incendiary sermons. Obama spoke well, not only about himself and his relation to Wright, but about where we are in America today as we continue to heal from our early sin of slavery. Sorry to all the non-religious people reading this, but in my view slavery is a sin, and we as a nation committed it. We also have worked hard to redeem ourselves and have made great progress, but our task is as yet unfinished.

I'm a middle-aged white Christian conservative Republican, and I feel that Obama has appropriately answered the uproar surrounding the Wright controversy.

Other than listening to Obama's speech, I took the trouble to find several sermons by Rev. Wright on line. Although he is definitely too Afro-centric for me, I have to say that the clip about 9/11 was taken out of context. Directly before the "America, your chickens have come home to roost!" remark he was quoting scripture about soldiers who murder innocent non-combatants, and directly after his angry remarks he was talking about how everyone, including himself, has to open themselves to god and ask for healing from anger. He actually said that he felt his own anger was out of place and sinful. They didn't show that on TV.

I deeply resent the way the media is irresponsibly manipulating our nation with intentional misleading mis-information. This is all about their ratings and profits, and has nothing to do with the candidates themselves, or the serious issues facing our nation at a time of economic decline.

You owe it to yourself to read the books and visit the websites of ALL of the candidates. I did this, and now when I watch the news I have a better idea of when I'm being misled. I have a much deeper understanding of the candidates, which is important, since one of them is going to be our next president.

Comment: response to Ganpat.....seems you are very concerned about Obama sitting in his church ...how often do you even go? What about all the members of the Catholic churchs that went to and continue to attend their church services after all of their problems..how many of them stopped going knowing that even one of their member had done the things that this church covered up for so many years..
Then too consider the tails that have been told so far by the Clintons..many over the years ..and are still being told by either one or the other... this shows their character to me..I guess to you it is ok... Not good for a public though in my mind to have poor charter and be at the same time someone that has been shown to lie about anything to stay in office as has been done in the past by too many politicans.

Comment: "It is telling that in our uniquely American taxonomy, Obama is almost always described as a black man with a white mother and never as a white man with a black father." I found that comment enlightening. We hear so much about ethnic sensitivity -- as if it were a wimpy trait. What we fail to realize is that our speech and thoughts are so wrought with stereotyping we don't realize the intricacies and their effects. I found Sen. Obama's speech a timely reminder that, despite all the other problems we face as a result of administrations' policies, we still have one that looms over us which is of our own individual making. Until we truly believe that we are all God's children (however we define God), we will always be confronting this same issue. In the end, it can't be legislated, but only changed because it's the right thing to do.

Your bragging guy with his "beautifully crafted" speeches is going to be slaughtered by McCain come November.

What was Obama doing sitting 23 years in a church, 17 of those years listening to a pastor who made racial incitement his speciality? What was Obama doing making that hate-spewing fellow his personal "spiritual adviser" and the pastor of his CHILDREN?

Do you suppose all Americans are idiots, Cose? That they can't spot a smooth-talking racial huckster when they see him?

The fact that the presumptive Republican nominee apparently doesn't have a clue what's going on in the Middle East would seem to be a big story. But not to the mainstream media. As soon as they heard the Straight Talk Express had run off the road, they sprang into action to get the wreckage out of view -- excusing McCain's Iran/al Qaeda confusion as a "gaffe." But it was the opposite of a gaffe. It was evidence -- evidence we should not ignore. We already know what it's like to have a president who just assumes that whichever way he wants things to be "common knowledge." It turns out it's not just Bush's war that McCain wants to continue; it's Bush's approach.

McCain said it because he believes it, WOW ! ! ! ! !

Comment: The headline states It was Always Headed Here and every one is trying to make this about race, yet the most telling statement of the whole article is this ....... since no man could run largely on the basis of credentials garnered by being the spouse of a former president (at least not until same sex-marriage is more acceptable than it is now).
What this author is saying, and the a majority of people are proving, is that just as many people in this country have a prejudice against women as they do about race. Many people will not vote for Hillary because she is a woman and the author backs that up by his statement. We will never have a woman president in this country because it is by far more acceptable to be prejudiced against a woman than it is against someone of a different race. So according to this author, a gay MAN would be able to run on the creditials of his husband before a woman would be accepted as president.

Comment: I get so tired of all of this, not only the hatred, anger and resentment on both sides, but also the waste of time and energy. I could hear the "blame game" in the Watterson responses - It's not OUR fault; it's YOUR fault! - How high school! I wonder how much we could accomplish if we used that time and energy in productive ways. I wish we were all beige! It is in the interests of those who are the most powerful to have the rest of us going at each other - keeps us distracted from how much more we have in common.
As for those who keep asking for SenatorObama to present a plan to address this mess - Are you KIDDING me? How could such a plan exist? These issues start with the individual. What shall we do, legislate that everyone must feel "right", do "right"? Issues of hatred, anger, and resentment can best be addressed by speaking honestly, recognizing the reality of the situation and engaging others to do the same. Senator Obama's speech was a breath of fresh air - an acknowlegement of reality.

    Comment: Mr. Cose,
I ask you what you propose as a solution or first step. This crucial piece was left out by Senator Obama. It is easy enough for someone to make a speech asking for a dialogue, but what specific actions are Senator Obama and you calling for?

Perhaps so few white politicians bring up race because they are immediately attacked as racist and insensitive for their comments?

Also, I believe that you should have called Reverend Wright's comments "racist" and not just "arguable anti-American". The more important question is, "What do the 6000 members of the congregation believe? Do they believe their Reverend's statements?" The only two answers are both negative: either 'yes' they believe what he says or 'no' they don't but don't care enough to leave the congregation in protest. Either answer is unacceptable for someone of any race to profess.

    Mr. Cose,
It is black america that imposes this "taxonomy", not whites, because of the ridiculous "one drop" theory. White people would welcome the ability to call these kids "biracial" or "mixed race" or (God forbid!) "white". I know many white women who have had a biracial child and were shocked to find out (after the child was born) that the father, his family, and the whole black community considers the child "black". This is true even if the black father is biracial, and hence, the child is only 25% black. Bring this up to your black colleagues and see what they say.

Comment: I posted the one below, to raise the old question: how forthcoming Obama's camp has been about Obama's background. His supporters want us to forget all of about this issue. With Hillary atleast we know who she is. Now we are reading through each second of her life. How about Obama? How in the world, a guy who was born to a Muslim dad and atheistic mother , who compulsively kept marrying Muslims , raised as a Mulsim in Muslim country, and changed to Christianity when he got active in politics, associated with a radical church with Muslim sympathies, claim that he has never been a Muslim. WHO IS SENDING $250 EACH TO HIS CAMPAIGN FUND? . isn't he the only one who collects money from outside USA? He needs to show where his money is coming from. Let me add a point. For Muslims, who are unable to send money to outside countries after 911 regulations, this will be a good way to spend on the 10% sakkath (tithe). We see Islamic centers growing all over the country , exactly for that reason. I am not saying this is not legitimate, but people need to know. What is their stake in this election?. Can any reporter investigate on that? That will be my only blog for today.

Comment: The Obama campaign just released this statement regarding today's LA Times report that Obama was registered as a Muslim at the schools in Indonesia he attended as a child:

"Senator Obama believes that having lived in Indonesia was a valuable experience and has respect for all faiths. But the facts are clear:

"Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ. Accounts in the L.A. Times that suggest otherwise are simply not true. Today???s report is based on 40-year old memories and paperwork that, as reported by the Times, 'bugs have eaten.'

"This is unfortunately yet another piece from this paper in which the reporter on the ground did not take into account the people who knew Barack Obama best."

Comment: You want to hear the truth. I raised my children to be color blind. No hatred for the races...we are all the same. One of my children became a nurses aide. She worked in nursing homes where there were plenty of grandmothers (I referring to the person who chided Barack for throwing his grandmother "under the bus") and I'm truly sad to report that on many, many occasions she called me from the nursing home in tears because some "beloved grandmothers" didn't want her to touch them because she was black. Or, to use their terms "colored." How do you combat those types of attitudes when you tried to teach your children that all men are equal. I totally understood what Barack was saying because it happened to my family many times. Many, many times.

Comment: The Wright issue. What is this really about? You want Barack to disown him? Why? The sound bytes you heard are inflammatory, but, listen to the whole sermon. At least one of you, please, listen to the whole sermon. There has to be another side of Rev. Wright. Has anyone ever thought that that Barack loves this man as a substitute father that he never had. He has called this man family. Have any of you an adopted family member. Do you love them? Perhaps Barack has never really acknowledged how deep his feelings are for this man. Not even to himself. I watched him take the heat from four sides last week with great dignity...from Hill/Bill, the McCain campaign although not McCain himself and every self anointed prophetic hypocritical newsmedia lazy journalist out there who couldn't follow a real story if you paid them. I was proud of him, Barack Obama. The self centered hypocrites showed their true colors with only a few sound bytes. How sad. Every time I look at posts for an adult conversation or race relations I read nonsense. Wow.

Comment: I have listened to two of the sermons (complete) - still trying to find the others - they are very moving and not anything like the media has protrayed them. The "chickens coming home to roost" was not Wright's - he quoted the former Ambassador to Iraq, Richard Peck who had stated it on Fox News the previous day. The whole point of the sermon was that after the attack we would seek revenge and revenge begets revenge and hatred begets hatred and in the end innocents would suffer. Pretty prophetic I think. The media has so distorted (and is still doing so) these sermons that it's pathetic. More and more and listening to them, though, so there is some hope that the word is getting out. I wish the newspapers would transcribe them and publish them. In the second where he said "God Damn America" the title of the sermon was "Governments Are Not God" and he discussed how governments fail their citizens and like Rome, God damned the Roman government. He said America has failed its people many times, but not always and the times she has failed her people she should be damned and when she does not fail them she should not be damned. It is so sad that this man probably has had his life put in danger because of the media's failure to properly discuss these sermons. Did they do it for ratings? Did they do it because they wanted to bring him down or to see if he was man enough to recover? Or were they protecing the butts of their rich white owners who want to keep they tax breaks if John McCain is elected? We will never know, but I do know that I have completely lost trust in anything the media reports. They failed us with Bush and now they are failing us again. Unfortunately, without a honest broker of the media, we have now truly lost our Republic.

I thought long and hard and did my homework before I made my decision. Edwards was too populous (and angry) - I knew he would never make it. The others just made no impression on me. If by some miracle the Dems take this election, I'd like to see Biden as Sec of State. Edwards would make a great AG. With all that fire and energy, he could put it to good use there.

Comment: CIBBMA - Exactly. As a woman, I have always taken an ethical stand. If the cashier gave me to much back, I called it to their attention. If my co-worker assisted or had the best idea, they got the credit. If I was worng, I admitted it. It's called ethics. And when the end of the game means you have to throw your ethics overboard to achieve that end, then you really have won nothing. it's very sad to see a woman who is as smart as she is - and even though I support Obama - I know that she is. She has (after all) a 3 point plan for everything! But that, too, is troublesome. As President you can't delve in the minutia - you have to see the big picture and direct others to handle the minutia. The shame of it that so many of us knew the Clintons were polarizing and rather than polarize the Republicans to vote against her, these tactics have polarized the Democratic electorate so badly that Obama people won't vote for her and Clinton people won't vote for him. I would have held my nose and voted for her until she threw Obama under the bus by saying she and McCain were better than he would be. How she can face herself in the morning is beyond me. By making that statement, she proved that everyone who said she would do anything to win were right. Her ambition has outweighed her judgment and that is not acceptable. If she does somehow "win" the nomination, I will write in Obama's name, 'cause I sure as h*** will not vote for McCain. What's so odd is my best friend, who is the most ethical woman I know, still cannot see Clinton's faults. Amazing. And Obama has his faults, too. Certainly he is ambitious (you would have to be to do something as crazy as running for President), but I have never heard him state or even infer that Clinton is not qualified. And as far as that Wright stuff, I listened to the full sermons of two of them (that I have found so far) and neither of them are disturbing when heard in full. In fact the "Chickens coming home to roost" was not Wright. He was quoting former Ambassador of Iraq, Richard Peck, who had said it the day before on Fox News. The media has manipulated this story without providing the full truth. Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that McCain will be the next President. I can see no way that this party is going to come together under these circumstances.

Sad but true. The first minority and first woman to get this far are very deeply flawed candidates. Those of you who could not see that from day one are living a fantasy. I am sure you were also big on Kerry too, not thinking for a minute during the primaries of 2004 that many other Americans might be turned off by his Vietnam War protester history and his haughty attitude. This time around, the Democratic voters should have not paid attention to the media hype on both Obama and Clinton. Alas, the 'intelligent' Democrats seem to live such an insulated life. They do not understand the country as a whole, or even their neighbors down the street. As such, they suffer from crippling group-think, and are genuinely surprised and outraged when their radical candidates are rejected by the middle of the American electorate. Too bad. They should have paid more attention to either Edwards, Biden, or Dodd. Either one of those guys could have united the party and ran away with the general election. The stupidity of Democratic voters in their inability to identify candidates who are true to the party's core values and are also acceptable to the middle of America will result in the deaths of thousands of more American and Arab lives and add trillions of dollars to the debt our children and grandchildren will have to pay.

No fault there, but she's chosen to rip her party to shreds and trash the other guy just so that she can put her fists in the air Rocky-style and claim victory. I'm convinced that no one matters to Hillary but Hillary. Why else have she and Bill tossed so many beloved friends under the bus when it came to their own ambitions? She's being outspent 4 to 1 because she hasn't raised as much money as her opponent!! And meanwhile, spending $100,000 on dinners for her team...that's no one's fault but her own campaigns. Hillary has spent years as the wingman and wants the front seat, and no one can blame her for that. But the way she's gone about getting it is largely disgusting. I've lost so much respect for her in the past 4 months, and she had FAR to fall with me. I never thought I would and could dislike the Clintons as much as I do now. And as for Hillary not needing soundbytes...what do you call "change you can Xerox" and "..maybe Barack needs a pillow"? Soundbytes. That went over horribly. No one doubts that Hillary Clinton is brilliant, strong and accomplished. What I do doubt is whether or not she has the heart to be president. If she's so obsessed with winning and so wrapped up in strategy and politics, where is her heart? It looks to me like she will always take the most politically-advantageous route as a means to an end; I don't trust that she can take advice and I don't trust that she will make decisions with the type of candor and forthrightness that I, as a woman, would hope and pray for from a female commander-in-chief--because THAT is our strength.

HIllary's campaign has been riddled with infighting and problems from jump, mainly, I believe, because so few people at the top of it genuinely care anymore about what they're trying to achieve; they just want a win. And so the biggest question now is: with a campaign run so shoddily, who really wants these people running the country?

Comment: Let me get this straight. Vote for the war - can't admit a mistake, Jesse Jackson - if someone misunderstood, then I apologize - nice qualification, bullets were flying and we had to duck and race to the cars - oh, I made a mistake (now we get that one). But let's not forget about the NAFTA lie. (I was for it before I was against it, rather than I was ALWAYS against it.) Pardon me, but don't we have a leader like that in office now? Someone who won't admit mistakes, doesn't apologize and thinks it's my way or the highway. Someone with no moral authority whatsoever. Bush, McBush, Hilbush. All cut from the same cloth.

Comment: Richardson should stop complaining that no one besides Clinton is given a chance. He had his chance. No one stopped him from running. He was in those debates and he had his chance to convince voters that he should be the choice of our party. But guess what, he didn't convince anyone. Instead of talking about the issues, he rambled on about himself. From the first debate until the last, it was very clear who had a command of the issues (and that was Clinton, Biden and Kucinich). Clinton is where she is because she knows these issues like the back of her hand. She lives and breathes policy. She doesn't try to stuff sound-bites into her responses - she doesn't need them. She isn't a prepackaged American Idol contestant riding off the backs of other people's work. Clinton is where she is because of her own intelligence, accomplishments and strength. She is being outspent 4 to 1. She is being ambushed by negativity from both the press and the Obama camp. But guess what? She gets up every morning and goes knocking door-to-door asking for people's help. And guess what? Despite all the vitriol thrown at her from the right-wing and the left, she continues to gain momentum with voters on the ground. She stands at the front doors of factories and automotive plants at 5:00 am. That's not a woman demanding to be crowned queen. She is where she's at not because of her campaign organization, not because of her husband, not because of the press, but despite of it all. She is where she's at because she's just that good.

Comment: Why did Obama THROW GRANNY UNDER THE BUS????

    1) Granny said she was afraid of black men.
    2) Obama said her comments made him cringe.
    3) 2005 - 37,460 Black on white rapes (about 100 per day) - ZERO white-on-black rapes
See Department of Justice link: http:///www.ojp.usdo.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cvus0502.pdf
    4) Granny is no fool as she walks down the street. Just ask Jessie Jackson.

(This is the kind of garbage that comes up when you want to use your typical white granny to cover your fanny. Don't just call me a racist for this post. Look up the facts about black-on-white crime. The numbers are dramatic. It doesn't matter why things are the way they are to an old woman; she is just wise to protect herself. She is not necessarily being a racist, narrow-minded, ignorant, or exhibiting racist behavior by being afraid of a particular group. She is being human, and he grandson equating her private comments about her real and valid fears shed further light on where his deepeset loyalities reside.)

I feel sure you were one of the many reactionaries that jumped to the conclusion that the Duke Lacrosse team was guilty. You were cheering on the media lynching, even though white on black rape is rare. If you had been in possession of facts and had some acquaintance with the truth, rather than your own deep prejudices, you would have know better in the case of the Duke students from the start. You see, what likely happened in Durham, was the likely the same thing that happened to Obama in the case of the Wright exposure. There was some racial name calling and the black person felt justified in an irrational overreaction. In the case of the stripper, she attempted to ruin the lives of three young men. In the case of the Obama being smoke out for going to a race hating un-American church, he felt justified in ruining the reputation of his granny when he THREW GRANNY UNDER THE BUS. He also felt justified in starting a conversation about race in America. So now, I'm talking facts in my previous post and you are talking pee in your. Great conversation.

Comment: Ellis, White Christians are accusing other whites, like me, of operating on guilt. I try to operate on a whole accounting: add up the negatives and a postives. I do that in lots of things: buying a stock, deciding where to live, etc. As a Dad, I try to look at the whole story of the interaction with my kids, not just certain facets. White Christians reduce my attempts to be reasonable with the race question, as I try to be with many mattes in my life, as just guilt.

To live by the Golden Rule, do unto others as you would have them do to you, requires thinking through how it would be to encounter the circumstances that others encounter.

For supposed Christians to reduce the golden rule to a criticism of saying that I am somehow weak of spirit, and seeking to assuage my guilt, is unChristian. The Golden Rule is based on the ability to empathize, to see things from anothers perspective. If you can't do it, fine. But don't think you are Christian. Far from it.

MEEKS: The N-word is not in the African-American community a bad word. Its a term of endearment. And I don't see it as derogatory or defensive, offensive.

But they are still the same white people who are presiding over systems where black people are not able to be educated. You got some preachers that are house n-ggers. You got some elected officials that are house n-ggers. Rather than them try and break this up, they're gonna fight you to protect that white man. END

    http://essence.typepad.com/news/2008/03/listen-to-rev-j.html

Now let's talk about race. Do you know your family's history? I've been tracking mine for several years. My ancestors owned slaves. I had nothing to do with it. Don't blame me.

Researching your family is a great history lesson; you???ll find things never taught in schools. There's an old saying-history is written by the victors.

On a trip to FL in the late 50's - wanna know what I saw? Shanty houses with dirt yards - no grass, black kids sitting on porches. Abject poverty.

It's not just blacks who were mistreated, it was American Indians - Read "That Dark & Bloody River" ???the Chinese-do a Google search on Chinese immigrants who helped build the railroads. As I recall Chinese weren't given rights until 1945. Many others.

Humans are not kind to one another. It's power & greed. & we haven't changed much.

My mother told me her father would get mad & beat her with a horse whip. If the sob had still been living, I would have gone after him. Your parents tell you their history. You learn from it. & your parents??? history is their parents??? history, from generation to generation. Fortunately, my mother was not a bigot. My father was. It was how he was raised & he never learned better.

My aunt told me one winter a black man came to grandmother's door asking to sleep in the barn. She refused. The next morning he was dead in the snow. She had no remorse, he was "nothing." This was 1930-50.

But I was not to blame.

I, too, have been victim of "reverse discrimination." I lost a promotion & when I complained I lost that promotion for 3 more years. I was angry.

One thing Rev. Wright has right-"governments fail" & therein is the problem we should be angry at the government. If you don???t know black history, look it up.

On a layover in Houston overheard a woman complaining about New Orleans-she was "so TIRED of taking CARE of THOSE people."

I'm not responsible (neither was she) & shouldn't be blamed, but our government should. I've helped elect some of these idiots & not always with all the facts at hand. But not again. We must get past this & pull together. There are damn serious problems a war, debt, our veterans, jobs, economy, energy. We have a stupid government & stupid people who can't get along to solve problems. You want to be mad...then be mad at them. There's no point blaming each other. We didn't cause the problem, our ancestors did. Now

Comment: Comment: Beyound race politics again. Bill richardson from CNN:
"Bill Richardson criticized a Clinton campaign adviser Friday for suggesting his endorsement of Barack Obama is insignificant.
"I resent the fact that the Clinton people are now saying that my endorsement is too late because I only can help with Texans ??? with Texas and Hispanics, implying that that's my only value," the New Mexico governor told CNN's John King.
"That's typical of some of his advisers that kind of turned me off."Earlier Friday, Clinton campaign senior strategist Mark Penn said he thought Richardson's endorsement came too late to make an impact."

Bill is trying to incite racial feelings again just like Obama camp played on African Americans (twisting words of Clintons) . He says he decided only a week ago. Please.

Comment: Obama's color is not the issue and no Barack cannot transcend race. His personal sniping , Reverend Wright and sniping from his surrogates demonstrates clearly its all about Obama winning at all costs. Uses the race card to gain sympathy for him and raise his plateau but his progress regressed with his typical politicians antics. Obama is lucky the media gave him a free ride early on in the primary race versus Hillary Clinton.
Barack Hussein Obama belongs to a Black Liberation theology congregation that does not even preach Christianity the way its meant to be preached. Barack's 'religious' faith is not even recognized by the Vatican as a Christian church. These congregations that are rife with the likes of Louis Farrakhan , Reverend Wright, those involved with 'Black Power' etc and this is totally unacceptable as content of character in a candidate for the President of the USA and leader of the western free world. The Democratic party will come to the realization Barack is too much a controversial and divisive figure outside the States and they will deny him the nomination. If not, it will be a terrible political miscalculation on the USA's part.
Furthermore , Senator Bill Richardson endorsed Obama for his own personal gain. Good possibility he cut a deal with Obama to reign support in from the Hispanic population in turn for a Vice-President position. Smacks right in the face of hyprocrisy and opportunism on the part of Senator Bill Richardson's part.

Comment: Thank you. Finally a writer that gives the proper credit where it has always been due. I have been amazed with the high comparisons of the speech with the truely great of the past. Mr. Obama has much to improve if he wishes to be included in the ranks of MLK and Frederick Douglas. I also appreciated the inclusion of LBJ in the process of directing a discussion about race in this country.
If there is to be an honest discussion it will never be started with people calling every statement racist or for that matter McCarthy like. I could not believe that a man who cliams to be as intelligent as Obama could allow himself to stand there and listen to the comment by former president Clinton being described in that way. I listened to the comment and it really sounded like he was stating that it would be nice if the candidates could actually discuss the issues rather than having their campaigns making all these really incendiary comments. If Obama was to be honest he would have called that comment out for what it was, garbage and nothing but. It becomes difficult to believe that he is not in full approval to these mudslinging techniques. Yes, he did have to address what was said and the controversy about what Reverend Wright has said, but he did not approach the level of oratory of the men he has aspired to be compared with in this speech.

Obama could have moved more nimbly, more deftly and more pre-emptively to distance himself from the jarring???and, arguably, anti-American???remarks of his outspoken former pastor, Jeremiah Wright Jr.'

There it is Bingo!!! The bottom line can be found at the very top of Ellis Cose's article. Obama has lost this election for the Democrats. In addition, he has set race relations back to 1960's levels of animosity because he could not stand up, be a man, and take responsibility for his actions. If Obama wants to be honest about race and have society chart a course to make amends, let him guide the way by distancing himself from Wright. To do so, would not the be the same as distancing Obama himself from the Black community. No one man is a community, especially from a discipled wolf of hate dressed in the sheepish frock of a minister of Jesus Christ. It is a false analogy to say it is so. Sophistry in sublime tones and rhythms does not change the devious message to truth. It is just the same racial snake oil rattled and peddled about by Farrahkan or Wright with some essence of Ivy League mixed in to make the potion easier to ingest.

Comment: Don't cry Marsha, don't cry.
Please seek advice from your mullah Greg and Alice.
          You seem outraged. Don't be.

Last week you chose 'your black people' and Liberaton Party to scare the undecided right. This week, your 'Mullah Obama'.
Yeah stupid girl, people who don't like that are racist. You're right.

Keep up the good work kid.
On the bright side, all the anger will burn off the cellulite forming under your chins.

Comment: Alvy, I honestly apologize for using Mullah Obama. It was uncalled for, but still not racial. O the burger is burnt. What the..

Comment: don't get frustrated.. where is your spirit? Use one your Guru's (cannot use Mullah any more - banned) uplifting words. "be the change you want to see" (well, stolen from Gandhi), Hey an idea for you writers: compile all of Obama's speeches and try to find out where he lifted those great sounding verses.

Comment: Obama is a great man and will be the next president of the United States. You right wing hate mongers can write all you want, you don't matter one bit.

Comment: Read TreeHugger's posting--it is RIGHT ON, well stated, analytically correct!! The Press has tried up until a few weeks ago to paint Obama as the "wonder man" to US politics. Well, he's FAR from it! I don't want a liar who associates with RACIST Bigots, throws his grandmother and white mother under the bus, has no experience, and hangs out with terrorists. Give us all a break. No we are NOT going to get over it as he is quick to say, and NO another of your "change the subject" speeches will NOT take the heat off of the truth about you. SHAME on YOU BH Obama or it is Barry or is it Barack, but never Hussein. Most presidents have no problems using their birth names, pledging the flag, putting their hands over their heart in reverence. Since you do have problems doing this, may I suggest you STEP DOWN NOW. You're a fraud. Voters will not vote for you now. Your campaign is over.

    • Posted By: Alvy @ 03/24/2008 13:30:21

Comment: Spoken like a true typical white woman.
No, I actually think you are an aberration. I also think that a new made up moniker.
Oh. And since you're a liar and racist bigot who hangs out with terrorist; you have no experience or education, does anyone hang out with you?

Tree hugger does at least try to veil his stupidity in something, you just come right out and say "I'm a racist bigot calling someone I don't know a racist bigot, based on racial bigotry."

Next time T-dub W and a third ? behind your name.

Comment: Ah, back to the same tactic again - If you dont like Barack Hussein Obama, then youre are a racist and a bigot, because the guy is so perfect, soooo honest, sooo jesus like, he will be our saviour among hate mongers. YEAH Right. Obama is the racist,, even his children would grow to be racist because they listen to sermons of hate. Stop turning this around. Go back where you came from.

        • Posted By: Alvy @ 03/24/2008 15:40:51

          Comment: Oh! Super stupid.
'Go back where you came from' is ultra-cool too.
There will be one person on the cusp of tolerance that you offended.
          Thank you.

Are you home? Well take a minute and oil the hinges on your munitions trap door and think.
What other old-school super stupid racist remark can I write - or have my cousin/wife write for me?

        • Posted By: Alvy @ 03/24/2008 15:34:04

          Comment: No dum-dum.
If the only candidate that you can disparage is the man of mixed-race while insulting his culture through word and deed, while loudly ignoring the short-comings of the other candidates using the same principles, then you are a racist.
Hey idiot - you're a racist. You're not quite as stupid as Marsha, marsha-but close.

Hey genius, what's 'your Mullah Obama'? Warm and Fuzzy?
Denounce him if you're not a typical racist.
You want other people to denounce right.
          C'mon and start us off.

Comment: Beyound race politics again.

Please.

    • Posted By: Alvy @ 03/24/2008 13:14:20

Comment: What are you trying to incite Marcia?
I don't really think that Obama needs to 'play on African American' Marsha.

But thanks for your expected useless update.

      • Posted By: emmarcee @ 03/24/2008 13:41:42

Comment: It was evident that Obama did not get enough momentum with Hispanics, this will be crucial in November against Mccaine.

      • Posted By: emmarcee @ 03/24/2008 13:40:53

Comment: Why should he cry That "they did not care about my endorsement because I am a Hispanic". He also ended his endorsement with a note in Spanish, just to show that "we are all one". Why do people pretend they don't t see these things?/ Same strategy Obama used among African amercians (twisting Clinton speeches) . This guy is just a splitter of minority votes. If he was a man, he should have stayed on the race. He is trying to get presidency through back door, even if it takes 8 years.

        • Posted By: Alvy @ 03/24/2008 13:57:50

          Comment: Marsha, marshy marsh.
Even it that were true, it's still a backward way of looking at actual words.
I'm pretty sure there is nothing to qualifies you as someone who can discern what words African American believe to twisted.

As far as splitting minority votes. No Marcy, marce. No.
Not a lot that can be done to split those. How many, yes. Split, no.
Please don't talk about race unless you have experience with other races outside of yours.
I'm also pretty sure you're lacking there too Marsh.
          Please don't change, Marsh. Please.

          • Posted By: emmarcee @ 03/24/2008 14:17:17

Comment: one does not need to be african american to see the result of those twists. The whole america watched as drones of african americans came out to vote for Obama. The media was keeping silent untill, people actually started asking about the details. First they reported only that 90 percent aa voted for Obama then thay came out with the actual percentage of voters who were AA. Obama fooled the white elite in Dem party. Do you think I am racial? I don't need to say what you need to do...

            • Posted By: reinadelaz @ 03/24/2008 21:14:24

Comment: Remember, that is the same percentage of suppot Al Gore enjoyed from the African American community.

              • Posted By: emmarcee @ 03/24/2008 21:41:30

Comment: But for Gore or Clinton, the entire community would not turn out to vote. YOu see, same percentage of the people voted but total number could be different. This is exactly why Obama was planted. . to split the minority votes.

              • Posted By: emmarcee @ 03/24/2008 21:38:49

Comment: not onlly Gore, Clintons too.
