The governing coalition has chosen a candidate for prime minister, just days after electing the first woman speaker of the lower house of parliament.

Comment: If Musharraf was wrong and Nawaz Sharif and Bhutto were the only genuine democratic leaders than the US, claiming to introduce genuine democracy in Pakistan, should play its role by putting its weight behind new candidate, Gilani. Remember Musharraf was catapulted by the US for changing "sham democracy" in Pakistan into a true and genuine one and must own its fault to correct it.
Although under highly trying and unfortunate circumstances, Pakistan has been propelled into a unique situation after the gruesome killing of Bhutto, where two parties which have the credit of holding the only elected democratic and civilian governments, twice each, have joined hands to move forward. It is definitely a great achievement of the people and death of Bhutto has worked as a catalyst of unity, which was unimaginable before.
Present situation will also be a litmus test for the reality in concerns being shown by the international community and a rare opportunity for it to make its positive contribution. If the incoming elected government takes-off successfully, conducts its business in peace and performs its functions with acceptable fairness and honesty, it will allow a long defied sanity to return to this perpetually bedeviled country. For Musharraf, it should be a face-saving opportunity because, he was already on a deal to facilitate the return of Bhutto as a moderate modern and practical politician having deep rooted bases in all regions of the country. He should now reinforce his struggle to fight terrorism with a moderate and modern religious approach, giving all out support to the new incoming administration.
