Comment: So whats every ones take on ultimate fighting and the MMA. Will we be coming after them next? As far as Im concerned people can fight chickens and roosters all day long I mean after all we do eat those animals dont we? And why would someone care about somebody elses animal? its time for america to stop crying.
Comment: Bullfighting, cockfighting, dogfighting, hunting, trapping, slaughterhouses and all forms of animal abuse are monstrous atrocities that verify that too many humans are rife with inhumane cruelty, violence and irreverence for life.
Comment: Having been to cockfights and know people that have farms. It???s a sad story all around. What used to be bright beautiful farms full of exotic birds are now vacant areas with broken homes and auctioned land.
Here is how I see it. First off it???s not a human, it???s a chicken. Do not put human values on a chicken. Anyway these are not henny penny white breeds of chickens, they kill each other. There can be only one male in the area. Three brothers raised by the same mother will live together for about two months then if not separated one will kill the other two. This is natural, as most like many other the dominate male kills all rivals. Its how evolution works. This trait has been breed out of domesticated chickens, as well as most produce chicken males are killed two days after birth.
Is it cruel to let these birds attack each other for sport and fund? It???s all a matter of your perspective. People seem to think these chickens are people, so let???s go ahead and put some human values on these birds. Unlike wild or farm chickens, a gamebird gets the best care and environment possible for two years. It really is a golden life for them, free from natural predators, safe from their male counterparts (who would have killed them), the best food and veterinary possible.
Then they get a fighting chance to live on. A good gamebird will fight four or five times and then be retired, more often than not to be a brood ***. As his bloodline is important. Winners get a chance to live.
I find it ironic when farms get raided and authorities then euphonize the birds. Personally if I was a chicken, I would like to live my golden life and have a fighting chance as opposed to being killed by the Humane Society.
I personally never enjoyed the actual bloodspot, but did enjoy the people and seeing the birds and engaging conversations about history of bloodlines, animal husbandry, and most importantly the birds themselves ??? they are beautiful, lively and fascinating. If you live within 200 yards of your neighbor I don???t expect you to understand any of this. The world is different to those that see more green than concrete.
For the most part farms have been shut down, flocks killed, and new birds will not be born. I find it strange that we are condemning these breeds of birds to a fate worse than the chicken fights. There is no longer a fighting chance for these birds, they will just be killed and future flocks never born. Doesn???t it seem cruel to commit gamecocks to death and a fate worst than death ??? non-existence By being ???Humane??? we are denying entire generations ???from ever being born, and executing the ones now around. I can???t see how this is good for the chicken. People should look at what???s best for the chicken for if they had then we would have not outlawed this activity.
Personally, I???d rather be born, live a good life and then have a fighting chance.

Comment: Hey bro.. :) Good job on the freelancin.. ;)
Comment: The animal rights people who worry about such unimportant things as cockfighting are the same pu**y's that cant put their own dog down when sick or injured and cant kill a rabbit or deer to eat. Put it in a package so we cant see what really happens. Make mine medium well, please.
Comment: It's alive and well on U.S. soil............. U.S. Territory that is. Cockfights thrive on Guam.
Comment: You know what else has historical aspects? Crucifixion. It's even in the Bible! I think since it's so historic and all we should do it now.
Fox would probably be the channel to approach with this.
Comment: Ross' story tells both sides of the cocking "tradition" commendably, but my heart implodes when i hear about such atrocities. It is important to note the historical aspect of the sport, but cockfighting's current link to the drug trade and ease of disease spread is incorrigible, not to mention the obvious harboring of animal cruelty. As for Guillory's notion that a fighting chicken has an upbringing of "freedom" prior to being put into fights and killed? That's just like saying we should bring our children to Disneyworld and make them gruesomely fight one another when they get to the end of the to end of the "Small World" ride.
Better luck next time, Sitka spruce.
Comment: I fully disagree with animal abuse and fighting animals for profit. HOWEVER, the points that are made against it by other people are ridiculous. I'm against it because I love animals. To say that there is a difference between eating chickens and raising them to fight is crazy. There is no difference. Either a human kills the animal, or the animal kills the animal. Either way, its the same. visit a website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com just to see how a "humanely" killed chicken lives its short life. And thats just one example. And for someone else to say that people choose to fight, whereas animals don't, that's crazy too. There are plenty of animals out there that aggressively fight other animals of the same species when in their territory. I took a trip to Hawaii and saw a natural cockfight between 2 wild roosters, where no one put them together, or fed them hormones to make them more aggressive, it happened because its in their blood, thats what they do. Again, I'm against animal fighting because I love animals, but the other points on these comments make NO sense. Law enforcement has a lot of bigger issues, involving humans, that they could be focusing their efforts on as a priority, instead of animals 1st.
Comment: I agree that most animal raising and slaughtering practices are horrific. There so few options available for people who choose to eat meat and use animal products but want to guarantee the meat and products they consume are from animals that are treated well, not injected with antiobiotics and hormones (and in the case of cows, fed byproducts of other cows, causing what is commonly known as mad cow disease), have comfortable shelter, remain unmolested, and killed quickly and mercifully. I am very lucky in that I have access to resources that allow me to consume animals that have been treated well and killed quickly and mercifully, but most people don't. In fact, most people don't even know about websites like kentuckyfriedcruelty. Kudos to you for pointing out a great website!
Comment: I think that it is right to stop the people that are doing these things to animals. HOWEVER, I disagree with some of the points made in these comments for a couple of reasons. To say that Humans choose to box, but that animals don't choose to fight is ridiculous. There are plenty of animals that are territorial and fight anytime they are near another animal of the same species. I went to Kuaui, Hawaii and saw a natural cockfight between 2 wild roosters, who weren't put together, nor were they trained in fighting. I don't agree with animal abuse, and I don't associate with people that agree with it. But I do think that there are way bigger issues in the United States, issues that involve humans, that could be addressed by law enforcement as a higher priority than cockfighting and animal abuse.
Comment: @username 86
Thanks for setting us straight. Thank God (oops!) we have you to let us know what the rules are.
Comment: Fantastic that we are putting these abusive criminals out of business. Anyone who defends this type of barbaric torture is a person who has no heart and soul. Let's put some "humanity" back into our dealings with all animals, whether they are food animals, pets, or wildlife.

People no more have to eat chicken than they have to fight them!
And do tell us how it is HUMANE to slaugher something and eat it!\
Do you realize how "silly" that sounds?
If you TRULY cared about "animal" welfare you would eat plants because you can eat part of them without killing them.
No sir you are a HYPOCRITE just like every other person who says that cockfighting is "inhumane" yet thinks eating chicken is "human", simply because you LIKE eating chicken just like some people LIKE fighting chicken!
I repeat - it is ILLOGICAL to have cockfighting illegal while having chicken eating illegal, because neither one is mandatory, but both are choices.
Like I said before, if I were a chicken I would rather have cockfighting legal and chicken eating illegal, than the other way arround!
Comment: So eating part of something without killing it is okay? If you also feel so strongly "about all-things-humane" I am assuming you also refuse to purchase products that are harmful to the environment, and you feel strongly against all things derived from the abuse and neglect of the planets precious fossil fuels.
Look around at the plastic that surronds you in your grass hut and tell me how you feel about the impact.
Animals eat animals, look at nature, read a book, do some research. I completly respect your choice to not eat meat, but before you think that you are so high and mighty take a second to think how many trees were wiped out so that you might get your education. All the books that were wasted on helping develop your scewed sense of self worth.
Don't force your views on others unless you are prepared to help educate them, but also walk into any situation with not only an open mind, but also an open heart.
Comment: Bigamike, you really don't see a difference? Really? People choose to box, animals don't choose to fight. People have to train them and put them together. Worsham, there are laws against animal abuse. You don't have the right to abuse and torture another living thing, whether it be human or animal. If you want to torture yourself by banging your head against a wall, by all means, do so. Go live alone on an island if you want to do whatever you want. Society has rules.
Comment: note to alfa(whatever)... god has nothing to do with cocking. to be taken seriously, leave the subjective religious sentiment out of it. that goes for everyone.
Comment: Asking "everyone" to leave their "subjective" religious sentiment out of it is like asking everyone to bow down and agree with with you. I don't believe in God, but I respect the views of others. I had an opportunity over the Easter weekend to dine with a leader in the Christian community, and was surprised at how open minded he was regarding issues I previously assumed he would fall more toward the right on.
SO, you are saying, to be taken seriously by you, they have to leave God out of it. Does this mean that previous religious leaders such as MLK and the Dalai Lama shouldn't be taken seriously because they don't share your very narrow-minded views.
Comment: I agree with Gamerooster.com when they write: "No sport can be higher than the class of people that support it."
Cockfighting indeed matches the class of people that support it. So does what comes out the back end of a chicken.
Comment: note to alfa-whatever. god has nothing to do with it. focus on the problem. religious sentiment degrades the validity in your comments.
Comment: Note to username86, God has everything to do with everything.
Comment: We should replace them with politician fights.
Comment: Just wondering how many of you people ever watch by a boxing rink and watched 2 grown men try to violently destoy each other and how many have died because of it, or a martial art contest to see 2 people violently hurt each other, funny how we let humans do this and we cry for the animals.
Comment: Amen to that.
Comment: It makes me wonder what kind of person would watch *** fights or participate in that "industry." It is too bad the U.S. has not come out the past yet.
Comment: A few things to ponder: Animals were put on this planet for our use, not ABUSE. Chickens for food and chickens for sport are two different issues. There are places to buy chickens and eggs that have been humanely and organically raised and slaughtered, Whole Foods grocery store is an example (remember, use not abuse) while there is no way to humanely fight chickens. And here's the kicker: more and more links are being made that correlate those people who abuse animals and those who abuse their family members as well as murderers and rapists. (Any internet search will show this research.) What's the next step after cockfighting? Dog fighting? Ultimate fighting? Rape? Murder? A note to Christians (and maybe other religions): God gave us dominion over the animals, but I just don't think God meant for us to abuse them, be it with inhuame food conumption or with fighting. All creatures, even roaches and mosquitoes and the very planet we live on, belong to God and we're making a big mess of it. I just don't think He likes what He sees and we'll be paying the price for our disrespect.
Comment: Why doesn't it stop? Because enough people are effete sadists who are excited only by the suffering of helpless animals.
Comment: I think banning cockfighting is just another intrusion by the American government on the citizens. It is an example of peoples" movement away from the rural life and nature. There seems to be an idea to let no one suffer or to shield people from reality. Roosters are animals and animals were put here for our use.
There is blood and violence, especially in nature. Why don't we ban mouse traps and mosquito spray isnt that cruel also??

Comment: Though I am a vegetarian, I don't see how the two can be compared.
Because roosters' spurs can break off during fights (natural selection), cockfighters attach artificial spurs which are stronger and usually longer than nature intended. In the wild, a losing rooster can run away; not an option in the cockfighting ring, where the trainers force the animals to continue their attack.
While the means of raising and sacrificing chickens have changed, humans have been eating chicken for centuries. I don't necessarily agree with the form in which chicken farms function, but have to acknowledge that it is in the best interest of the farmers to have healthy conditions for the chickens to be raised, and that stretching out thier deaths is neither proper or practical. On the other hand, cockfighters test-fight their roosters and look for animals that will cause the proper amount of damage to the competition, too fast a kill and the bets will not pay off well. Which sounds worse?
Comment: I want people to ponder this: in those chicken farms that we've all heard of, do you know what happens to the male chicks when they're separated from the females? They're killed immediately because while the females lay eggs, you only need one or two males for fertilization. I just don't see the difference. If given a chance, I would imagine many roosters would want a fighting chance to live. I guess I'm more in the line of thinking with criticalthinker.

So in a way, I kind of support criticalthinker because the birds want a fighting chance to live.
Comment: if the world practiced indhuisum, which forbid the bad treatment of all species including our own, we would be living in a much better world.
Comment: If you asked a chicken if they would rather be put into a fight and have a chance of living or into a pot and be eaten, which do you think that chicken would choose!
The idea the *** fighting is cruel, while eating chickens is not, has got to be the most STUPIDEST idea ever.
Either you make eating chicken illegal or you make *** fighting legal, but it is ILLOGICAL to have one legal and one not!
Comment: Here in Puerto Rico, we have a major problem with people understanding the important link between how a society tolerates animal cruelty and its tolerance for other forms of violence. There are hundreds of thousands of abandoned animals seen in the streets. When someone mentions they are trying to find homes for puppies, the first thing that is asked is not how many there are, what they look like, etc., but "?Son machos o hembras?" ("Are they male or female?") When people hear they are female, they usually shake their heads and click their tongues. The majority of those females are abandoned to the streets to continue the abandoned animal repopulation. In the same way, cockfighting continues to be an accepted "sport", with a recent newspaper poll showing that the majority of Puertorricans either strongly agreeing that cockfight is a perfectly legitimate sport or at least agreeing that it has been a part of our culture for so long that it should remain so. Education is the key, but unfortunately the public education system here barely has money for the basics, much less really teaching children the importance of caring for our planet.
Comment: You make some awesome points! Your post is very thought-provoking.
Comment: Cockfighting...Thank goodness for the Humane Society of the United States and for those prosecutors who are willing to give their all to take on the cockfighters. I was shocked recently when a famous baseball player from the Dominican Republic or some such island was shown (on youtube) participating and cheering on a cockfight and the American sports people were just fine with that. Would that like to see their own pets suffer like that? The best thing that has happened for the welfare of animals is the new HSUS under Wayne Purcell. I give money to the HSUS now everytime I'm asked, because that is the one organization that has the clout to really help abused animals. Wonderful job on this article! We need more like it to wipe out the human trash who support such cruelty to animals.
