THE LAST WORD

George F. Will

‘Your Brain on Cubs’

It is said there are no atheists in foxholes. There should be lots of them in Wrigley Field in the Cubs' 10th decade of rebuilding.

Comment: The New Yorker also once had a cartoon:
First Person: "I have a funny story to tell you"
Second person: "You mean 'funny' funny or 'New Yorker' funny?

Comment: Opening day at Wrigley Field this year was a great highlight of why I have been and always will be a Cubs fan. Sure the Cubs lost in extra innings. But Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, was honored with a statue in front of Wrigley Field. At 77 Ernie still wears that infectious smile that overflows from his undying "let's play two" spirit that is typically absent from the high dollar players and the world series winners. Their happiness is fleeting, crushed by next season's victor. Its not about big bucks and winning The Series. Its about the joy of the game. Would't the world be a better place if we could all wire our brains like that?

Comment: Even if they won their last Series when the Titanic existed only on a blueprint, if rooting isn't heart based instead of brain based...what's the point?
