Comment: The statement about requiring fiber-optics to the desktop is inaccurate. Internet2's DCN, via the DRAGON control plane software, is capable of manipulating many different types of network hardware and systems--from wave division multiplexing optical hardware to standard managed Ethernet switches. The control of these circuits is extendable to most any current, manageable network hardware, and thus, type of connectivity.

(How come he's not mentioned anywhere in this article?)

Comment: Previous post regarding http://www.airadvantage.net is accurate. Check out the franchise website at http://www.a2fg.com - they are looking to expand upon their success in Michigan in other rural areas across the United States.

Comment: i agree with you debvoltolina. I have had dial up for years then I called my well known telephone company and (we all know who that is) to make changes in my telephone service I was told DSL was available in my area. I signed up for it and had it for about 3 weeks. It was shut off on Feb 22, 2008 and the company said I could go back to Dial up for twice the amount I paid before they told me there was DSL in my area.

Comment: For you rural folks, fixed point wireless Internet is taking a foothold in the rural communites. example - http://www.airadvantage.net - which is now a franchised company.
The internet towers run off Silos, Graineries, Co-ops, anything that can ge above the treeline.
A local small business owner in your community can start up one of these fanchises very quickly to provide fast internet at a very good price.

Comment: It would be really nice if people in rural areas could get caught up first with high speed internet. It is hard when all you can get is dail up or expensive satelliette.

Comment: It would be nice if people in rural areas could even catch up to the regular high speed internet first.

Comment: Of course, how many people have a fiber optic connection directly to their residence? And how would Comcast or Verizon or whoever profit from installing such wiring so that we could enjoy the faster speeds?

This extra speed would be a boon to me, I could do multiple things at once, and all of them much faster. As it stands, the connection I have, Verizon FIOS, some things I'd like to do online, I can't, because of speed limitations and bottlenecks and peak traffic ect.

As the speed of the internet increases, so do the potential things we can do with it.
