Wow there are some really weird ideas out there. Conspiracies everywhere. Why don't we just admit that we are not going to give up our big, fast powerful cars until we have to make a choice between eating and driving. Too many people feel like giving up their big SUV or performance car is admitting that their standard of living is taking a hit. We all need to realize that the world is changing, and we need to start preparing for the change. If everyone would get on board, the transition to more fuel efficient cars would be easier. Right now there are not of attractive options for small fuel efficient cars, but a bigger demand would force the automakers to design more and better choices.

As for all the talk about great gas mileage in the UK and Europe don't forget that the UK gallon is about 20% bigger than the US gallon. So a car getting 55mpg in the UK would be getting 45mpg in the US. We have plenty of gas cars that will get 45mpg in the US (some diesel models do even better)

Doesn't anyone remember the Chevy Sprint? I bought one in the late 1980s and it got 55 MPG on the highway and 50 in city driving (Chicago!). It had a peppy 3-cylinder engine. It seated four adults more comfortably than most compact cars of its day. Its maneuverability was excellent, and I could park it in the smallest spaces. Some big-car -loving folks claimed it looked "unsafe," but when there was a California earthquake that crushed cars under a highway, the only survivor was a man driving a Chevy Sprint!

There is hope....however, it is sad because this is being withheld from the public. Right now there is a company that is selling a device called the Hydro Assisted Fuel Cell available right now for current vehicles. The device is promised to guarantee at least 50% increase in MPG or money back. The company is also working on getting approval from the EPA on the Pre Ignition Catalytic Converter which once intalled in conjuction with Hydro Assisted Fuel Cell you will be getting over 100 MPG even on SUV's and Trucks. The biggest downfall right now is the governement is not taking too much interest. The sooner we realize that some technology that benefits consumers is being suppressed then the sooner we can demand more from those elected in office....and the gov't is not so innocent because they are interested in tax revenue from gas sales. Anyway log on to www.picctv.com to find out more.

Charlie1936 - You must still be living in 1936. Show me one new car built in the last ten years that has a carburator... none. They have developed something new, its called fuel injection.

  • Posted By: GustoMaybe @ 04/28/2008 3:42:02 PM

@charlie1936: you are showing your age and your ignorance. cars in the US haven't used a carburetor since the early 90s.

  • Posted By: charlie1936 @ 04/28/2008 3:14:44 PM

Why is everyone so stupid? With todays technology the cars could easily get 100 mpg. The gov. does not make that mandatory because of the huge influence that would have on the economy. [lost taxes mainly.] If you look at the carburator it is basicly the same as the model A. I would think that a more efficent system could have be developed by the men that put a man on the moon and set rocket ships to the planets...

I used to live in the UK and I had a a car that would easily do more than 50mpg. It was a renault clio diesel. Yes it,s not small but it is safe, comfortable and relatively quick. It did 0-60 in 10 seconds (not supercar acceleration but good enough) and it would easily cruise at 100 mph on the motorway (doing about 45 mpg then!). If you stuck to the 70 mph speed limit 55mpg was easily within your reach. It'd had AC and lots of comfort features so i don't think you need to make a comprimise there. I had it because it was ecconomical in a country with $9/gallon gas. What do i drive here - a mustang GT which gets 10-15 mpg. Why? Because there is no incentive to have an fuel efficient car. Put gas prices up to a level like the rest of the western world and people would be forced to use smaller more fuel effiecent cars. With a demand from consumers the Auto makers would be there in a flash.

Why doesn't anybody talk about tax penalties for gas hogs - ie: a Hummer would cost you say $10K extra in taxes to purchase. Since their over use of gas not only costs them money but also drives up my gasoline price - I say make them pay

    • Posted By: cleoj @ 04/28/2008 2:27:46 PM

I tend to agree with you. However, people who can afford big cars like a Hummer probably can afford the additional tax. This will not stop them from purchasing them. However, it will help our economy.

    • Posted By: misterharban @ 04/04/2008 6:07:52 PM

No problem with a penalty for gas hogs. How about a penalty for driving too much. It really doesn't matter whether you waste gas by burning it in a too big vehicle or by unnecessary driving. As a point of fact, the increases in our consumption of gasoline due to increased per capita driving since 1980 are nearly four times the increase due to increasing the size of our vehicles. The fact is them is us.

I am totally fine with sacrificing the gas mileage for the added safety of most American cars. The 2.5 times more likely to die in an auto accident in a small car stat should be chilling.

This is not Europe or Japan with it mostly urban, windy roads driven at slow speeds in gridlock traffic. The semi truck barreling down I-95 at 80 MPH is always a scary thought to me. I feel much safer in a car that might actually offer some protection.

    • Posted By: cleoj @ 04/28/2008 2:23:25 PM

I agree with you jdusaf. I think sosebee is an idiot. I'd like to see him in his car versus me in my car. We'll see who gets wiped off the concrete in the end.

"Report immediately to a termination unit!"

I read comments like this and I am even more convinced that Americans are a braindead culture.

  • Posted By: getzel @ 04/27/2008 2:53:54 PM

Why automakers don't sell a car that gets 50mpg?

The public does not want them. The American driver does not care about MPG. He races to red lights to get one car ahead; he jack rabbit starts to get one car ahead at the next light. What does he care about MPG.

The American driver does not correlate funding terrorism with buying gasoline at the gas station, even as he reads, he does not correlate gas sales with funding terror.

We went thru the stupidity of silly speed limits. Europe has 85mph speed limits and in Germany none on some roads and they pay far more at the pump. While there are many other types of engines none has made it to mass manufacture yet. Aftermarket kits generate more power and more mileage as do overdrive gearing. But the bean counters and government regulators keep a lot of these technologies out of the public's hands Europeans are more used to servicing their cars than Ameicans the experiment with the Corvair proved that. Chrysler's gas turbine car was killed because it would not make enought money for the dealerships on repairs.

It has become apparent to me that the American People do not have the intelligencee to realize that all their empty griping about the price of gas just shows their stupidity in gross form. They have become the product of an attitude of want, want, want, along with immediate gratification which makes them, happy, happy, happy. They are totally ignorant when it comes to sacrifice in order that they might achieve a desirable end restult. They have their heads up their anal cavity when it comes to realizing the obvious fact that if we do not curb our plush, self centered way of living we are not going to have a world in which to live. All of their "gimmie" low level thinking attitudes are indicitive of their low level thinking. It is a trade off, but one in which we are choosing to live or die and not the price of gas. If we keep going at the same rate of consumption of all the natural supplies, we will deliberately kill off the entire human race in a few hundred years, if not before. Americans are are of a short sighted, ignorant, low level thinking, gimmie, mentality. They refuse to give up their high flying materialistic way of life in order to assure that the human race survives, not only in the future, but right now. For instance, the "Ozone Layer" damage, they cannot immediatelly see, feel, nor touch, in their daily lives, or so they think, so "out of sight, out of mine" they have not the mentality to consider preventative measures, but rather just blindly react to problems when they directly have a bearing on their comfort or what "they want"! Their discomfort and wants, are the only things which will make ignorant people stand up and take note of any negative occurances, in their lives, which are killing them slowly and assuring the demise of the human race as we know it. Alas, we live in slumber, while viewing the world through rose colored glasses and are more concerned about what kind of interior our new cars have than we do about the "true" fuel consumption of our contribution to the demise of the human racer not to mention the pain, agony, and obvious lack of any comforts during that demise, which is in the making as I write this. I know, you will attack this as pure folly, but dream on in your ignorant state of bliss. You are the ones who will cry the most in your self inflicted agony..................................scooter400

Drop the pretext. What is needed is more refineries, many more There is plenty of oil enought to allow sane approaches to the energy needs of the future while helping this old sty;e economy going. Get rid of a lot of the excess weight and et some real power slow cars are dangerous. a "Nascar cage" would be as effective and cheaper.

The 3cyl Metro was a horrible joke- I rented one for 2 weeks- it came with a warning sticker to NOT use the air conditioner, unless you were going 50MPH!..It ran like a slug, in fact I had to return 2 of them to the rental company (Alamo) as the car had some problem in transmittion or engine...It barely got 40MPG at 65MPH, but this was the summer and I had to use the air conditioner constantly...Now the Geo Prism was a different story-it ran great, gas milage around 35/36 and no air conditioner warning-they got a bad rep from the 3cyl model, so was not too popular (except at Alamo)-resale value was bad as well, oh well- I drivew a '98 Olds Intrigue andf it easily gets 30MPG, but at 65MPH (27 at 70MPH), shyney

Just like zalobar with his 95 Turcel getting 50mpg if he keeps it under 65mph. I have a 97 Geo Metro 4cyl. if I drive under 65mph I get at least 45mpg on straight Gasoline not the 10% Ethanol blend most people THINK is so great and saving them money at the pump here in Iowa 10 cents a gallon cheaper, I get 5mpg less town and highway driving on 10% Ethanol. There is less ENERGY IN Ethanol than gasoline ,so to get the same amount of power out ouf your engine you will have to burn more of the 90% gas&10%Ethanol , this cant be Poulliting less if your burning more fuel, I feel sorry for those people in States where BIG BROTHER dosent give them a choice of straight Gasoline, to get the best MPG and the 10% Ethanol CRAP and get less MPG, sorry farmers its a lousy fuel for street cars, might be alright for Race Track Engines, ETHANOL is Crossive on Aluminum , most of our Engines Cylinder Heads are made out of Aluminum, ETHANOL eats up rubber fuel line hoses, thats why Car Companys went to Plastic Fuel line hoses, Ethanol makes Steel rust, once again thats why newer cars have Plastic Gas Tanks, I have read in short term tests that the 85% Ethanol is going to make the Engines wear faster. Also Ethanol and Gasoline dont Chemicaly mix they will settle away form each other, at the gas pump you may get less than 10% Ethanol or way more than 10% Ethanol in your Car Or Truck , This Ethanol is just a BIG SCAM on the American people. Back to the Geo Metro, It was made By Suzuki until 2000 also some of them had 3cyl Engines that was rated by the EPA at over 50mpg on the highway , LIKE THE OTHER PERSONS 95 TOYOTA TRUCEL AND GEO METRO,SUZUKI SWIFT WHY IS NO CAR COMPANY MAKING ANTHING LIKE THESE CARS , MOST IF NOT ALL THE 4CYL. ENGINES ARE 4 VALVES PER CYL. HIGH PERFORMANCE EAT MORE GAS 4CYL. ENGINES , I BELIEVE THIS IS A CONSPIARCY TO NOT PRODUCE THESE MORE FUEL EFFICENT CARS.
