As more and more Prius's are bought the stereotype of the Prius owners will change, I'd like to think I am helping that to change. I owned an SUV that got 17 mpg. I loved my SUV, it fit me like a glove, it drove so smooth and I had a bird's eye view no matter where I was driving. But we moved 30 minutes from work and I knew 2 years ago that gas would never go back down to where it was so we bought a Prius, good timing to because we were able to take advantage of the $3200 tax credit from the government : ) ! I miss my SUV, I just loved it but truthfully I love my money more and I know I have more of it in my pocket because 17 mpg (at best) compared to 51 mpg (at best) is a no brainer. There will always be a debate over mpg on vehicles especially on hybrids, honestly when the summer is at its hottest and the winter is at its coldest any hybrid will ask more from its fuel engine, and the Prius mpg can drop to about 42 mpg. or lower. When the neither air nor heat is needed yes you can get 50 to 51 mpg regularly, if you drive the Prius to get the optimal mpg. sure you can get closer to 60 mpg, it just depends on how much work you want to put into it. Now, let's talk about the acceleration and speed of a Pruis, short description....I've always had a lead foot and my Pruis does not disappointment me for that matter neither did my SUV. I'm not a environmentalist and I've never hugged a tree but I know what I want and if it fits into my lifestyle then I don't really care for all the debate of owning a hybrid Prius.

Let's change your calculations to the upcoming, Chevy Volt and figure 75% of the 15K miles, it is driven on electricity for an equivalent of $0.75/gallon. In serial hybrid mode on gasoline, figure 50 mpg. That would mean 525 gallons saved annually, roughly $1837/year for gas at $3.5/gallon + $1669/year saved by using electricity instead of gasoline = $3506/year. With a price difference of $10,000 you would have to drive less than 3 years or 45,000 miles to break even!

Hybrid trucks are a good thing. Plug in Hybrid Cars combined with more solar electricity and wind electricity are a good thing. Putting more freight on trains and upgrading the railroads for rapid freight provides jobs for displaced truckers and saves wear and tear on roads and bridges. Trains use way less fuel per ton of goods moved than trucks. Jimmy Carter was correct, "the energy crisis is the moral equivalent of war" !
