Comment: Georgetown should never become just another academically elite school. As a Jesuit institution, GU has a special responsibility to help its students :

see/discover God in all things,
live the notion of "magis" -- striving for the greater good
experience "cura personalis" (God doesn't care for us anonymously; we need to reflect that same care and concern for the individuals with whom we live and work with on a day to day basis)

Even if an individual professor disagrees with a specific Church teaching, if it is in his or her curriculum, he or she has an obligation to present the Church's position with respect, while also offering other perspectives.

Should Georgetown be open to students from a variety of faiths? Of course! At the same time, any student who selects GU should know that it will provide them with a distinctively Catholic and Jesuit perspective. AMDG

Comment: As a former student at Georgetown I can tell you that the primary reason Georgetown is "not so catholic" is the HUGE number of foreign and non-Christian students there. Georgetown does not "push Catholicism" because it is open and tolerant of Jews, Muslims, Gays, atheists, single parents, etc. I was raised a Protestant but have converted to Judaism and went there because of the exceptional Foreign Affairs and Diplomacy studies. It would be a shame if my Jewish son had to miss out on the same quality education I had because the school implemented a litmus test to exclude non-Catholics or those unwilling to toe the Papal mandates.

Comment: Organizations like the Cardinal Newman Society are nothing more than shills for right-wing Republican political organizations. How else do you explain that they condemn Michelle Obama as being "pro-abortion", yet they have no problem at all with speakers who support the death penalty, torture, preemptive war and the rape of the environment--all of which have been condemned by the Catholic Church?

Comment: As a practicing Catholic and Georgetown graduate student, I couldn't agree more that Georgetown has gone astray. Walking around campus, you would almost think that Georgetown is hiding from its Catholic identity. For instance, the presence of a pro-abortion banner in the school's "quad" presented an inaccurate face of the Catholic faith. While I respect and support the right to free speech/religion/action/whatever, this example does not provide a good example to the youth about the Church's values. It is the Church's/school's responsibility to teach and espouse its values; after that, it's between God and the individual.

Gillis, I think you might want to do some investigation and reading before you base your opinions on media sound bites. If you do, i think you'll discover that the Catholic faith, especially the Jesuit community, welcomes free thought and logical analysis. It is meant to strengthen faith, not brainwash the Church's followers.

Comment: Top-ranked Catholic universities like Georgetown must know that if they are forced into greater religious orthodoxy they risk losing their talented non-Catholic and non-religious students and faculty. Some years ago, when my daughter was in high school, we visited Georgetown on the college application tour although we are certainly not Catholic. We seriously considered the school only because we were solemnly assured on our campus tour that all those crucifixes in the classrooms did not mean anything and that my daughter would not feel uncomfortable at Georgetown as a non-Catholic. As it turned out, she received early acceptances from Harvard and Duke, so Georgetown fell out of the competition anyway, but you can be sure that Georgetown and other high quality Catholic institutions get the point.

Comment: My experience as a graduate theology student was pretty open and spacious. We were encouraged to argue and discuss everything and ask some difficult questions. The corde ecclesiae can be taken too far into choking off ideas.
