Maybe. Every couple of years, it seems, there's a new study of whether purple coneflower, or echinacea, prevents the common cold. The most recent assessment, reported in the British journal Lancet in July, concluded that one of America's favorite herbal remedies both prevents and shortens colds. When scientists at the University of Connecticut combined the results of 14 previous studies, (all clinical trials with human beings) they found that taking echinacea reduces the chances of getting a cold by 31 percent. And if you've already come down with one, the herb will make you feel better a day and a half earlier, they said.

A caveat: more than 200 viruses are known to cause the symptoms of the common cold. So echinacea's effectiveness may depend on which virus you're exposed to. In most of the studies volunteers were exposed to colds naturally in their ordinary environment. When the data was limited to three studies in which volunteers were directly inoculated with a single virus, echinacea still upped their chances of avoiding symptoms, but only by 18.5 percent. One such study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005, found that echinacea did no better than a placebo.

It's also important to know that not all store brands of echinacea are reliable. In a 2004 evaulation of 19 brands, Consumer Reports found that the amount of echinacea actually present in the supplement varied considerably from brand to brand and even from bottle to bottle. The magazine's best picks for all-around value: Spring Valley, Origin and Sundown.
One more note: echinacea can cause allergic reactions, may interact badly with some common medications and should be avoided by anyone with an autoimmune disease and a handful of other illnesses. Check with your doctor before taking it.

Comment: Echinacea is SUPER effective.. and it's one of the best things that ever happened to me. For MANY years I was plagued with repeat and severe sinus infections. My primary care physician had PAGES of notes on me about this, as I kept returning to him every few months. Each time he prescribed a new round of antibiotics.. and it would get temporarily better.. then return with a vengeance ! One day it got so bad, that I left work and rushed to the emergency room with extreme rattling in my chest.. I was sure I had pneumonia. Again, another round of antibiotics. In desperation, I went to my local health food store and asked if they could suggest anything for severe sinus infections. The owner said " Don't you take echinacea ? " I said no and I'd never heard of it. So I bought some and started taking it as suggested. In a fairly short time, the condition cleared up.. AND I"VE NEVER HAD A SINUS INFECTION SINCE !!! That was about 10 years ago. Later I asked my Dr if he was familiar with Echinacea.. and he didn't have a clue. Now I buy most of my food there, alot of supplements, and I NEVER get sick and I'm 63 ! Other than that one episode, I don't think I've ever missed a day of work in 13 years straight. Find a good health store and a knowledgeable person there and get advice about this and other conditions. Much about the trypical American diet is the root of our chronic illnesses.. and drugs are not the answer. Take responsability for your health and seek alternative answers.. and you'll be amazed at the results !!!
