Excerpts from a new picture book for the children of women who have cosmetic surgery.

Tapping into what may be a growing market, a plastic surgeon has written and published a book for the children of women who have cosmetic surgery procedures like breast implants, tummy tucks and nose jobs. 'My Beautiful Mommy' (Big Tent Books, May 2008) by Dr. Michael Salzhauer aims to reassure kids that Mom's bruises and bandages are just temporary, and that the new, improved mommy won't be different, just 'prettier.' This is just sad and pathetic. What have we come to as a society? I try to teach my daughters that they are beautiful. What are the mother's who need to buy a book like this going to say when their 12 or 13 year old daughter comes and asks them for breast implants? How are they going to make their own daughters have excellent self images when they needed surgery to have their own. We are such a ridiculous and shallow country. My advice to mother's who opt for surgery...keep it under wraps. Let dad take care of the kids while your recover.

Although I haven't read it, this book tries to fill a void that I have noticed. Most mothers who want to go through plastic surgery really don't know how to discuss it with their children. Even though this book may not be the ideal answer, it is at least a starting point for a discussion.
