This is just sad and pathetic. What have we come to as a society? I try to teach my daughters that they are beautiful. What are the mother's who need to buy a book like this going to say when their 12 or 13 year old daughter comes and asks them for breast implants? How are they going to make their own daughters have excellent self images when they needed surgery to have their own. We are such a ridiculous and shallow country. My advice to mother's who opt for surgery...keep it under wraps. Let dad take care of the kids while your recover.

Although I haven't read it, this book tries to fill a void that I have noticed. Most mothers who want to go through plastic surgery really don't know how to discuss it with their children. Even though this book may not be the ideal answer, it is at least a starting point for a discussion.

What a stupid book. I guess the intent is to help kids cope with the fact that their parents are having surgery? I don't think it's a successful endeavor. Why not have the mother go through a necessary surgery?

The book should be called "Mommy's Having Surgery," or "Mommy Goes to the Hospital," or something like that. "My Beautiful Mommy" hints that the child would tell the reader how amazing her mother is. Maybe "My Beautiful Mommy (but only after her nose job and tummy tuck because before she was just 'sort of' pretty)" would be more fitting.

Anyone else notice the beauty pagent pictures in the "Dr's" office!?? This book just makes me sad and afraid for any little girls growing up.

this is HORRIBLE. every mother is beautiful and should never show kids at such a young age that it's wrong to not look like a super model. i can understand children's books that help kids get through the tough times of when their parents are going under surgery...but plastic surgery should not count.

This is so lame. Now "mommy" doesn't have to talk to her child, instead she will just hand her this book. Personally, I think plastic surgery for the sake of "beauty" is disgusting. It always looks fake and people always know if you've had work done. Anyway, the writing is on par with the illustrations; awful. Maybe the women who get themselves cut and pasted back together could buy their children a better education with the money, or travel (and I don't mean Disney World).

As if young girls don't have enough issues with their own bodies to now have this type of discontent programmed into them when they are little.

yes, but what next? a book on penis enlargement perhaps?

Everyone should notice that it was "written" by an MD. No doubt, a plastic surgeon.

    NOTE TO DOCTORS...

The tobacco industry thought it was a good idea to covertly market to children with campaigns that centered around cartoon characters like Joe Camel. $300 BILLION later in settlements and litigation costs, they decided that "indirect marketing" to children was a BAD idea. Then again... I'm a just a lawyer. What do I know...

He's not "marketing to children" he's offering an option to women who've already chosen augmentation to help them discuss THEIR choice with their kid. Quite responsible of him.

I think it's great. So what if the mom wants to get some plastic surgery done. She'll look like hell for a week, and this could scare the kid, but a book like this may prepare the kid for any glimpse of her mom while she's recouping. The mom should prolly stay away from her kid while she looks banged up after the surgery, but if a person wants to have plastic surgery done, they can evaluate the risks and do it.

It's just like people that evaluate the risks and eat at McDonalds or evaluate the risks to go snow skiing or fly in a car or a motorcycle. Who is to say its society making them conform? What if they like that look, so what? There is no reason to get self rightous. I bet some people that made those comments feed their kids fast food, fried foods, sodas, and drive them to games in SUVs that get 12 miles to the gallon. But you know what? So what? Although I may not agree with decissions like that they have the right to choose the way they want to live. Although I haven't had anything done, I don't think people who do are bad. I've seen some bad surgerys and I've seen alot of people that had something done that look a lot better for doing it. Although I disagree with the book and the way the Doc presented the subject matter, I think some patients would at least liek the option to use it if it meshes with their perspective.

Here here! I'm so tired of women being disparaged for getting plastic surgery! It's a choice, like any other and frankley I'm glad we live in a society with so many options....

  • Posted By: MegsSB @ 04/23/2008 3:53:22 PM

Plastic surgery is not disgusting! It is an option for women which help to boost their self esteem and body image. It empowers us. Women who choose not to partake are making their own choices. I respect their decision, as well as the choices made by women to do opt for an elective proceedure. Bottom line, ladies....we only undercut ourselves when we undercut the choices other women make. It's responisble of Dr Salzhauer to offer a comfortable way of discussing a mother's transition and choice with her child.

this is sickening. so i guess the mommies who DONT get plastic surgery or who cant afford it are just going to remain "unbeautiful" mommies. psh...this is just to promote his (the doctors) image so he can get more business. doctors will do ANYTHING to get more money in their pockets, ESPECIALLY plastic surgeons. so be wary of this book people
