Comment: Younger voters will reosnate with Obama because we can identify with him, and in some way he understand that the major part of the problem in this country is Older folks. They are to be blamed for taking us down the road we are presently on. They lack vision and so they are now dampening our dream of a brighter future and a more unified America.
They fail to understand that if our future continues to be as bleak as they lay it out for us, then, their social security will be limited in scope and we will force them back into the stone age. Let's see how they like bread and water. As young people we will take back this country and prove to the rest of the world that we can unite and become masters of our own destiny.
Those old folks who are championing for the Clintons can forever continue to hold on to fading dreams. All this garbage about black and white is but a stench in a drifting wind that will eventually fade away. Obama gives hope to both Black and white, in that the presidency is now open to any child regardless of his family background. If we should look at Hilary we can see that everyone cannot identify with her, however every child, black white or brown can identify with Obama.
The future is ours to take and decide what direction we so choose to follow. Young people wake up and follow your dream, a dream for a better future, if the old fargies fail to see vision then I guarantee you it will be their loss.
Where there is no vision the people perish.
These are the days when young men will dream dreams and old men will see visions.

As young people we must refuse to carry the burden and anxiety that is attributed to racism a legacy from our forefathers. Let it go my people and you will experience tremendous growth.

Comment: younger voters will worship obama with all of their hearts.
younger voters will root out the evils of the elderly. can't have their experience screwing it up for the unseasoned amongst us.
younger voters will favor a new law that prohibits anyone from ataining age 31.
younger voters will live in a bubble and not realize that there is another world outside of their city of "hope"
younger voters will be thwarted by the one man who didn't buy into their idea of utopia.
      LOGAN.
      Run Logan, Run!

(these obama worshipers scare me. seriously.)

Comment: The facts are difficult things to ignore, but the Clintonistas and the Republicans keep on trying:

    FACT 1: the math is simple, Clinton has to win by huge margins in ALL remaining primaries to pass Obama in the pledged delegates and popular vote, something she cannot do (example North Carolina and Oregon);

    FACT 2: FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN DO NOT COUNT!!! it's the ultimate in Clinton arrogance for her to claim she won those states when the rest of the Democratic field followed the rules and did not run;

    FACT 3: the GOP wants Clinton to keep on fighting and eventually win. Why? because the bloodier the battle the more negative sound bites they can get against each Dem candidate for the fall. Also Clinton as the Dem candidate is the only thing that would energize the Republican base and get them out to vote (it certainly is not their candidate); that's why Rush Limbaugh is urging his listeners to switch and vote for Clinton in the primaries (those right-wing Conservatives just can't help using Nixonian tactics, it's in their genes);

FACT 4: The polls show that the Pastor Wright issue and "bitter" comments did not hurt Obama.

    FACT 5: Clinton is running out of money; yes she got a good bump from her latest win, but that will not be enough for her to cover Indiana, North Carolina and Oregon, all which she has to win, and which she cannot cover because of not enough money; Obama has $40 million and counting, to cover all 3 comfortably (and yes the money did matter in Penn., it cut Clinton's lead from 20 points, to a final margin of 9.2, that is a significant gain);

FACT 6: The mismanaged wars in Iraq/Afghanistan, the bad Economy, Bush's 28% approval rate, the Republican governing incompetence of the last 8 years, McCain's age, continuing gaffes and uninspiring personality, NO WAY, NO HOW, ARE THE REPUBLICANS GOING TO WIN IN 2008, you can take that to the bank. Americans were suckered in the last 2 elections, they have had enough, they want HOPE, they want COMPETENCE, they want CHANGE, they want OBAMA!

    POST TURTLE

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher,

whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor

struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our

    President.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a'post turtle'.'

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a

    'post turtle' was.

The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road

and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top,

    that's a 'post turtle'.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he

continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by

himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do

while he is up there, and you just want to help the dumb a$$ get down.'

    Comment:

As much as I can't stomach Ed Rendell (I think that he is racist and a slippery opportunist), I do have to stand up for his comments about the Nation of Islam in Philadelphia. Remember, he made his comments in 1997, before 9/11 (which was 2001), and in 1997 the average American wasn't threatened by the Islamic faith. Even more importantly, I lived in Philly until 1998, and I can tell you that the Nation of Islam did GREAT things for the Afro-Americans in Philly, helping them to get off drugs, leading them into stable families, and decreasing crime/increasing safety in the black neighborhoods, which were some of the poorest in America. There were parts of Philly that looked like a city that had been bombed. Zombie children were in the streets, selling drugs. It was horrible, and the Muslim churches stepped in and helped these neighborhoods. Rendell was right to praise them for that.

However, Rendell praised not just the Muslims of Philadelphia, but also praised Louis Farrakhan, which was a mistake. Rendell is a two-faced liar when he acts like it is a sin that Farakkhan made a statement supporting Obama, when in fact Rendell himself supported Farrakhan. Obama did not support Farrakhan and did not ask for his support. In fact, Obama publicly spoke out against Farrakhan.

Just because SOME Muslims are jihadists doesn't mean that Islam isn't a real religion with strong values and the desire to do good in the world. Read some of the poems by the Muslim prophet Rumi, who not only talks about his amazing relationship with God, but also praises Christ frequently. Most Muslims are prayerful, good hearted people who live clean lives.

ANY religion can be manipulated into something ugly. Remember the Spanish Inquisition? Or take a listen to the hateful bigotry of HolyRoller, blogging on this website. He's a Christian too, but not one I would want to worship with.

Let us not forget to praise what is good in other religions, even as we keep our eyes open to watch the activities of the bad elements. Although Farrkhan has to some extent redeemed himself since the 1960s, I would never fully trust him. However, I can distrust him without condemning all Muslims.

The difference between Bush's War and most other wars is that it was started by a LIE!
Also, Liberals are FAR more likely to listen to a Conservative than vice-versa. Conservatives never listen because they think they already know everything. Hence your opinion of Gore who was right on Climate Change and Kerry who was right on Iraq. Why don't you volunteer again? The Marines need YOU!

    • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 04/22/2008 15:16:02

Comment: Climate changes have been going on from the beginning of time. WWII we entered to fight after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. The Germans did nothing to us, yet we fought them as well. As for this war, several countries intelligence agencies reported the same thing. The consensus was to invade. Now to justify your own cowardice you have to make claims that it was a lie. Maybe you are privy to some inside intelligence that the rest of us aren't? If so, share, if not maybe you can use some common sense (not too common these days) and not make accusations for something you have only conjecture on without proof to substantiate the claims. As for conservatives and liberals..... Liberals won't listen because they have no tolerance with anyone who does not share their views. Rather than engage in an intelligent debate, a liberal needs to verbally attack the other person instead of addressing the issue.

It is not just him -- lots of people are like that. Alas.

      • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 04/22/2008 14:51:04

Comment: No, it is just that those of us who actually have bled for our country hate to see brainwashed ignorant armchair quarterbacks try to turn our country into a socialistic society. As for Aldous21.... please prove to us all that Gore is correct on global warming. He used computer generated graphics from the opening scenes of movie "Day after tomorrow" to establish his version of "fact" of the glaciers falling.... even made comments about "how majestic it looked from a helicopter". Also used false images of polar bears in his fiction. So, according to you, he is a genious who is "right on", yet has to use make believe to create hysteria. And someone out there made a comment that I can't think on my own. Hmm, once again you far left liberals show your true colors and ignorance.... Just for the record, as far as party politics, I could care less and pledge allegience to none. I want an America as it was intended by our founding fathers, but I am sure you have never referred back to the federation papers, constitution and other writings of the time to get an idea of what they meant. Maybe you should do some brushing up on history and some studying of real educational material rather than the fantasy pieces of fiction created by lunatics such as Al Gore and Michael Moore....

We have become a society of political parrots ready and eager to hear and repeat any of the sound bites the party leaders spit out. If we do not agree with the other side we result to insults and discount them. We need to discuss and even argue the issues and be prepared to listen to the other side even if what we are hearing makes our blood boil, if we do not we become the people of the government and not a government of the people.

Obama has bragged about JFK helped to fly his late father to US from Kenya which is totally untrue, but the media in general (except WP) seldom mentioned this serious distortion of history. Also, it is the Dem party which needs more argument to scrutinize her own candidates carefully before nomination, especially on Obama whose Chicago connections really bothers people.

Comment: Mjno writes that he thinks that if the Democrats do not nominate Clinton, that the Democratic party will "cease to exist, implode." I have to disagree with that assessment of the situation, since I think that the opposite is true. If the Democrats nominate Hillary against the will of the people (the popular voters), then the Democratic party may indeed implode. Considering that Obama has brought in and REGISTERED over five million new voters as Democrats (Afro Americans and the youth vote), I can't see how the Democratic party can afford to let Obama walk away. Do you think that all those college students who registered for the first time in their lives are going to vote for Hillary if she's nominated despite losing the popular vote.? And since the party needs their votes as they age and evolve, I really don't think that Howard Dean, et al, will let this happen. Not to mention all the people like me, who are Republicans voting for Obama. I'm not fond of McCain, but if it was a contest between McCain and Hillary, I would trot right back to the GOP faster than you can say "Lewinsky."

    Comment:

I lived in Philly for years, and my friends there (we are all Republicans) have crossed over and are voting for Obama. I visited Chestnut Hill last month, and everyone in this very conservative part of Philadelphia was talking about how Obama is the best candidate. It doesn't surprise me at all that he's pulling ahead of Clinton. She's looking increasingly desperate and shrewish. And Obama has gotten 90 superdelgates since February, while she has only gotten 5. Some of Obama's superdelegate endorsements include long-time Clinton supporters like Gov. Richardson and Robert Reich, a Clinton cabinet member. Hillary keeps saying that if she takes this all the way to the convention, the superdelegates will be on her side and give her the nomination. It has become obvious that this is not going to happen, since the superdelgates are deserting her in droves and even the ones who were her close allies are jumping ship. Even if she wins Pennsylvania, she really doesn't have a chance. It is way past time for her to hang up her boxing gloves. She's starting to look delusionally self-obsessed.

And as for McCain, I would like to like him, but I just don't have it in me, when the only two candidates with good Christian morals are Huckabee and Obama. Not to mention that McCain, by his own admission, knows nothing about the economy, which is currently our number one problem in America, a problem caused, I might add, by G.W. Bush knowing nothing about the economy. Ahem.

I'm a Republican, but I'm not suicidal. And I love my country much more than I love my party.

    • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 04/21/2008 17:29:51

Comment: What politician ever has known anything about economics except for Reagan? Most times they don'e know diddly about squat. Politics is what most politicians are good at, yet we are sold on the fact that they are somehow experts on everything. Wake the hell up. OK, McCain at least admits that he isn't strong on economy, so what would be his solution? Logically it would be to surround himself with people who are strong in that area. Makes more sense than to go with someone who thinks he/she is knowledgeable about economics yet their solutions are the type that will bankrupt the country and drive us into a socialistic type of government. I love my country and could care less about party. But any party who wants to take our freedoms and drive us towards a socialistic regime is an "ENEMY party" in my book.

It is simply time. A vote for Hillary will mean that we've had either a BUSH or a CLINTON in the white house for a minimum of 32 years, maximum of 36. You are watching the birth of the Imperial Presidency..a monarchy in the making. That is not how American politics is supposed to work.

Comment: well, why don't we go ahead and blame EVERY president that ever lived for ANY military death whether in combat or training..... pull your head out and get real. Maybe we should outlaw automobiles as well since more people died in one month on our highways than military members who died during the entire war. Bet that must be Bush's fault too by your standards

Comment: There was a lot of talk a few months ago, about the easy ride Obama was getting from the press. As a way of compensating, much of the media focused on issues that, while they made good television, did nothing to address people's concerns about the direction the country is going in.

On the other hand, the coverage of John McCain still leaves a lot to be desired. It feels like the love affair with the Senator from Arizona, is still in the honeymoon phase, and he personally is very much mythologized. While McCain is more reasonable and approachable than many Republicans, he has vast areas of questionable policy decisions and statements that have been more or less ignored or glossed over by the media.

If one can imagine what this country would be like had the media, not focused on Al Gore's personal awkwardness but instead on his policy ideas for the country, the mind reels. No war in Iraq, a "lock box" for Social Security, fewer, if any tax cuts for the super rich, and a much lower deficit, for starters. Plus, we would be on the cutting edge of dealing with climate change, instead of lagging behind other industrialized nations. We might even have a more reasonable health care system.

A healthy argument about our country's future is called for. But the media is notice; such questions as: "Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?" have no relevance to the American people, in 2008. Those media outlets that live by such inanities, will find a mob with pitchforks outside their headquarters; the voting public is that concerned.

Comment: Dear Madame Degarge, Thank you so much for your intelligent and thoughtful comments. And thank you for bringing some real issues back into the discussion.

Comment: it's easy to imagine what the country would be like. There are so many fine examples out there such as cuba, former soviet union, liberia..... anywhere where the government takes care of everything. Maybe you would like our government to come in and cook your dinner too, or clean you up after you use the restroom. Democracies are lost not by invading countries, but by their own stupid citizens voting to give the government more power and authority than it was intended to have.

Comment: there was a lot of talk a few months ago about the easy ride, Obama was getting from the press. while the media went too far in the other direction for a while, they seem to have found a fairly good balance, neither hyper critical nor overly praising.

However the coverage of John McCain leaves a lot to be desired. It's still very much in the honeymoon phase, and very much mythologized. While he is more reasonable and approachable than many Republicans, he has vast areas of weaknesses and flaws that have been more or less ignored by the media.

This election is too important, to gloss over issues that would become glaring, once a candidate was elected to the presidency. If one can imagine what this country would be like had the media, not focused on Al Gores slips of the tongue and his personal awkwardness but instead on his policy ideas for the country, the mind reels.

A healthy debate about the direction the candidates should take the country in, is vital. But please, spare us from such arguments as: "Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?"

Comment: If the Democrats DO nominate Hillary against the will of the people (the popular vote), then the Democratic party may implode. Considering that Obama has brought in and REGISTERED over three million new voters as Democrats (Afro Americans and the youth vote), I can't see how the Democratic party can afford to let Obama walk away.

Comment: She is finally going after his false image. Why she waited so long, is a mystery. However, if Hussein does gain the nomination, the result will be a complete vetting by the Republicans. Obama's chance of gaining the White House is very near 0%.

Comment: Can you manage to write anything without including your love affair with Obama in it? Please this has gotten embarrassing now, and you are quoting the miniscule poll done by newsweek as proof, now at least that is funny. National polling normally includes more than 1300 people nationwide. The gallup poll released the same news block showed a drastic difference, but that does not fit the tale you want to tell. Look just stop pretending to be a journalist sir, you left that job months ago. The only function you have served is as an advance man for Obama and if this magazine were not on the same bandwagon, you would have been fired for your partisanship. That reminds me, I only subscribed because in the past universities had counted on this as a legitimate news source on politics, I need to cancel my subscription.

Comment: It is sad. Sad to see someone with as many journalistic talents as Fineman, reduced to his present state. Americans in the not so distant past, looked to places like NBC, CBS, ABC, Newsweek, Time, and local newspapers, for a real and true analysis of events. Fineman, Alter, Matthews and others have shown the entire country, that they can no longer be considered, a trusted source of unbiased truthful perspective.

It is no wonder, Rendell saw Fineman after the debates, a stated..."your the guy from the Obama network." Fineman, what happened??? Alter and Matthews, especially are blatant in their adoration of the BarackStar. Vett him??? No, they want to kiss him. Matthew saying he felt electricity run down his leg, when Obama spoke. HEY CRISSYPOO...IT WAS JUST PEE. Alter get salmost violently angry if someone says anything negative about his schoolgirl like crush, object of affection

Guy's, you have thrown away a lot of trust and dignity. You will never re-gain it.

    Comment: Dear Sir,

    This is hokum.

The American white middle class is all big on Cosby: that blacks need to come-to-Jesus as regards personal responsibility. I am an Obama latte elitist type. And I agree with NRA whites. Cosby has it right. Sharpton and Jesse and the rappers are awful for Black Americans.

    That said.

White Americans in the heartland need to accept their own come-to-Jesus lesson, of the exact type that they say (correctly) Blacks need. Why and How so? Middle Americans staunchly defend moderate education and moderate interest in book knowledge, while they moan about rising Asia taking work.

The reason Obama is a good model, is that he, like Condi, like Colin, like Bill Clinton, came up from the hardscrabble on the strength of his education. That commitment is what middle American whites need to do. Increase their education.

But instead, the media encourages them to accuse people like Obama, Gore, and Kerry for being out of touch. The problem is not that these guys are educated and have the fruits of education (from mulitple generations or just from this one), the problem is that middle America doesn't admire these people as examples of what education can bring them.

Hey, if I earn more, I might choose windsurfing and skiing instead of hunting? Is there something wrong with that? No. 9 kids out of 10 would rather move along fast in water or on snow than wait it out in the brush for an animal to come by. We don't need to make value judgments about these things.

It's great that middle Americans are pleased by things they can afford, like hunting and going to Church. But that doesn't mean that master's degrees in engineering, chemistry, business, etc. wouldn't be great to give them more funds and more options -- as well as leave more residual money rolling around for the working class.

    • Posted By: what? @ 04/20/2008 09:32:34

Comment: Obama didn't come from hardscrabble. The prep school he went to back then not costs somewhere about $12k a year. Emotional and physical abandonment yes.

      • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 04/21/2008 17:48:51

Comment: so poor uneducated people are the only ones who enjoy hunting? Get over yourself. I have the higher education, served over 20 yrs as a Marine, enjoy skiing, diving, etc and oh, yeah.... hunting. Your stereotyping here shows a high degree of ignorance.

Gore and Kerry are idiots in my book. It takes more than simple education. It is also important to use good common sense (which isn't very common anymore) and know how to think for yourself. The problem here is intolerance. The Liberal attitude is that if you don't believe exactly as they do, you must be uneducated or even a racist if the title fits their needs. These extreme liberals have no room in their minds for differing opinions and rather than openly debate or exchange ideas, label people (much like you insinuated here in your petty attack of guns - another extremist tactic).
