Comment: I had a patient who used (gargled) Listerine mouth wash at least 3 times daily for over 20 years, and he developed tongue base squamous cell carcinoma. He had no other risk factors (ie smoking or alcohol). In my opinion, this cancer was definitely caused by the mouthwash. Too much of a good thing can sometimes be bad. He is doing well after surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Comment: I just returned from China where dentists recommend rinsing with salt water to combat periodontal disease. As a biology teacher I realize that bacteria that flourish in our mouth cannot be cultured in saline media and regularly rinse with salt water (cheaper than Listerine or Crest Pro-Health). Perhaps a great laboratory experiment for a microbiology class would be to attempt a culture from bacteria in their mouth and compare saline media with the commerical alternatives.....

Comment: Moso bamboo leaf extract is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-microbial. A mouthwash made from this bamboo leaf extract has anecdotally confirmed its ability to cure halitosis - at least temporarily, as well as cure periodontal disease. Why use alcohol and chemicals when there are natural substances that do a much better job?

Comment: You can't really say that mouthwash is a perfume agent. In reality, mouthwash will get the bacteria that brushing misses. Can you honestly say that when you brush you get every exposed part of your mouth and tongue? I know most people, like myself, do not brush their tongue (mainly for me because of the gag factor). So, really, mouthwash is a good addition to brushing, as if helps to clean out the rest of your mouth to prevent alot of bacteria from spreading and making even more smell.

Comment: As I get older, I'm very conscious of my mouth, my teeth and my breath! I try to brush at least 3 times a day. I know I should floss more, but don't! So, after reading this article, I still don't know which is best, alcohol-free or mouthwashes with alcohol. I've actually used ACT before and it is good, and good-tasing, although more expensive. Perhaps I'll just stick with that.

Comment: I try to keep mouthwash use to a minimum, because sweet-smelling breath should come from good oral hygiene and good health, rather than a perfume agent to cover something up. I think a lot of coffee drinkers don't realize how foul their breath is after their cup of joe. Wish they'd use mints or mouthwash or something.

Comment: Sweet-smelling breath can also come from my c*m on your tonsils.

...But then again, you already know that.
