How to make the most of your 'stimulus' check.
Comment: In retrospect, I think it's a stupid way for the "GUMMINT" to act. Free money?

Comment: I'll use mine to pay down debt. Takes the pressure off of my disposable income.
Isn't much, but every little bit helps!
Comment: My Daughter did her taxes with tax act online and had dd, She paid for her tax filing fee with her debit card and she is getting her tax stimulas dd May 9.
Comment: My daughter did hers with tax act and paid the fees online with her debit card and she is getting hers dd may 9th. They are sending checks to people who had money taken out of refund to pay for your filing fee.
Comment: My husband and I had the understanding that we would be getting the stimulus check deposited by May9th, then that changed to May 5th which is great. We both work full time, have 3 children and we do NOT live about our means. We have no credit cards (cut them up 8 yrs ago), we have two vechiles but one payment, we have a child with braces which is a monthly payment, and many normal household bills and I know there are a lot of people out there much worse off than we are, we planned on stocking up on the more expensive things with groceries because the prices of everything are going up and probably are not going to get better any time soon. So I had not bought any groceries in about 3 weeks to pay extra on some bills. I just found out this morning after having to call the IRS because of conflicting reports that I will not be getting a direct deposit although we filed and received our 2007 taxes back by Feb15th by direct deposit but because we filed though Taxcut, now it will be mailed on June 27th, now I am sitting here trying to figure out how at anytime in the next two weeks that I will be able to by groceries to feed my family because I mistakenly trusted what the IRS gov website said and added normal grocery money to pay extra on bills depending on this money, now it is another 7 weeks away so anyone who filed with TAXCUT, turbotax, etc....don't plan on a direct deposit check, look at the paper mail schedule for your return. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for the money but the IRS needed to much more clear on how the money was coming for everyone and just not in general. Very frustrated mom here!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment: Yea I filed with Tax Act and had my tax refund Direct Deposit too, and found out the I will get my check mailed around June 6th.. The IRS Agent said it was because the banks that write the checks to you do not reconize the rebate checks.. I was so mad.. See I did the same thing you did, we took money away from other things to pay other stuff off thinking we were going to get our money tomorrow May 9th, and now wer are just deeper then we were. They should have put that on their website that if you use these Tax places that you will not get Direct Deposit and stop miss leading people.. Boy are they going to busy tomorrow when a whole lot of people don't get their checks they have been waiting for... I too am very frustrated, and so upset at the Gov. and how they did this.
Comment: I thought the stimulus checks would be a good idea but now I have found that the banks are holding the checks before posting them to direct deposit accounts. The banks, in this case Sun Trust, is making a fortune on $35 NSF fees and $35 Extended NSF fees. I know of one bank customer that has over $700 and climbing in NSF fees while he and his family wait for their check to post. His SSN last two numbers are 02 and as of today, May 3rd, nothing has posted.
Comment: I thought it is great that American government willing to give-away some money to american people. The least american people can do is to be grateful and thankful that they can see some money back to them whether is little or much. Afterall, little is better than nothing so enjoy it and be thankful!

Comment: I think people should be grateful that at least their government is willing to contribute some back to help out American household. Whether is little or much is still better than nothing right? What do you have to lose anyway, just accept it graciously and thankfully.
Comment: From a step father of 4 kids because their own dad wasn't man enough to stick around and raise them, and father to two of my own, I find this stimulus package is something of a joke. My wife and I work our backsides off to provide a decent household for these kids and for the government to think that the $1800 that we are to receive will make a difference? Hardly. And we get to add that income to next years tax bill because we the taxpayers are footing the bill for this stimulus relief. An idea that I came up with is that since the Governement seems to be able to print money at will, why not send each household in America not the $300 per head, but $300,000 per household instead? Can you imagine what kind of economic boost the country would feel after "most people" paid off all of their debt and began to really spend all of that income that would ordinarily go to bills? The high rollers out their can fend for themselves. But then I think that there are people that cannot manage money and would end up back in debt over their heads in less time that it takes for Congress to vote themselves in a pay raise. But for the rest of us, the dream of sitting on the beach in Hawaii would be reality faster than one would normally think possible. For the others, too bad so sad. In the end I am pleasantly surprised to get a check and I am grateful for it, but am I upset because I didn't get more? No. I'm happy I got what I got. Life goes on.
Comment: "Here comes that free money" ???!!!

Comment: Here's an interesting fact from irs.gov
Even though April 15 has passed, there is still time for retirees, disabled veterans and others who normally do not file a tax return to submit a 2007 form to receive an economic stimulus payment.
Just so everyone knows..

Comment: As americans we have to start teaching our youngsters to live in their means. We try to give them what we didn't have, but we also have to teach them to be responsible. I'm amazed to see all these teenagers with gucci, calvin klein bags, & etcc.. They all have a cellphone. We don't live in our means. We want it now & think we will be able to pay it later. We live in a great country, but we better watch ourselves or we the taxpayers will be paying taxes for these high rolling free spending people. I'm a teacher & I live in California (one of the most expensive state), but I live nicely & still have money to save. I recommend to all my students to take 1 business class to understand how to handle their $$$$$$!!!! I just hope that we don't have to pay more taxes to pull these speculative businesses & people out of their conundrum!!

Comment: I agree with "working american". It's everyone's fault the economy continues to deteriorate for continuously voting these idiots into office. We are slowly reverting back to 80-90 years ago ( i think 1920 era ) where we have no middle class. Your either rich or poor. Sad. At least McCain doesn't partake in the pork spending...as far as we know ;-)

Comment: I completely agree with what "working american" just said. It's everyone's fault the economy sucks so bad right now for continuously voting these idiots into office! Our economy is slowly being reverted back to the earlier part of the 1900's where we have No middle class. Either your rich or your poor. How sad. At least McCain doesn't partake in the pork spending.
Comment: Well, if this is like the last rebate check, and serves as an advance on next years taxes, I guess I will be giving it back to the Feds in about a year, with my blood pressure being the only thing stimulated...
Comment: I am a working american age 70. We are going to spend our rebate on a trip to see our grand daughters in May. I blame all woes in our country on the people we elected and sent to DC. They all have forgotten the folks back home. They spend too much time and our money on fact finding trips and other perks that they dont need. I am talking about both parties .

Comment: Although they say the rebates are being deposit early into accounts, I only know 1 perosn in the 1st group SSN ending 00 - 20 to actually get it ahead of schedule. WE have been watching our account SSN endind with 10, 17 and 01 and still nothing, hopelfully it will arrive as scheudled on 5/2. Then I can fill up my tank and get some milk and egges.
Comment: Thank you for the rebate, it will help pay off some bills and do some shopping for my kids. I have a two year old boy who turns 3 on May and a 4 year old girl. I am about to turn 23 on May as well. I started a family at a young age. My husband and I moved in together when I was 18. Now we are legally married and are happy because we have our priorities straight. I work for an attorney, I have been working in the same field for over 4yrs now. I do plan and have started taking action on going back to school to better myself and education. Unlike many teen girls that get on welfare and food stamps, my husband and I never took any government help because we both believed that we could work hard and support our children. OUR..that's right we all put ourselves where we want to be, I started a family at a young but that is not an excuse to get "help" from the government and just relax. Maybe this is out of the topic but I read some of the comments and several ppl keep mentioning the government help. I will use my money as I think it's best I think we should all do the same anyway we are the ones paying the bills later. I pay my bills, so I don't worry about that. For those that make too much and do not qualify, why are you complaining. Ppl and I include myself, the more we make the more we want. If I was making too much to even qualify, my life would be much easier. I do intend on changing that one day but for now I will take it step by step and get myself through school.
Comment: I know what I am going to do with my $$. $300 on bills, $100 in savings & I am blowing $200 on whatever i want. I haven't bought anything new in a long time!

Comment: I'm not getting one as I make just a little too much. I don't make enough to qualify for the tax cuts Bush wants to make permanent. If I did get one I'd send it to the Ron Paul campaign as he seems to be the only true conservative left.
Comment: It's funny how Dr. Paul isn't offering a bribe for a vote.
People are voting for him for free, and for Freedom.

Comment: What rebate check?? By actually working hard, getting an education, and earning a lot, I'm forced to not only pay a higher rate, but also get no rebate check. Go socialism!!!!
Comment: It could be worse, you could have worked hard, got a college education and still only be making 30 thousand a year. It happens all to often. If your still upset about the 600 dollars I could always switch places with you.

Comment: tis article provides a lot of suggestions bt fails to address the purpose of the stimulus plan. the point is to spend the money not save it or invest it and prefferably on american made goods ,the production of which supports american jobs. which in turn supports the growth of the AMERICAN economy. so to all of you who intend to pay more than lip service to the term patriot remember your part in this stimulaus plan and spend like your job depends on it because it most likely does
Comment: We could all take a cue from some of the european countries, work hard, spend less on firvolous things and enjoy life. Do we all really need super huge houses and luxury cars? no a honda works just as well as a land rover and just as safe-it even gets better mpg. If we all live within our means and quit trying to keep up with the hiltons we wouldnt have to work so hard to enjoy life. my husband and i live in the SF Bay Area, one of the most expensive place in the US, combined we make approx 60K a year. but we have time to spend with our kid and families and take some time off b/c we're happy with our old honda and living in a small house that fits our needs. Yes sometimes it would be nice to hae a little bigger space, but part of being a responsible is being resourceful and able to do with what we have, I cant imagine anyone making 100K+ and being a slave to make money to eat-even in Marin County-where the median house price is 1mil-people who make 100K are lving just fine and arent struggling-so i cant imagine that in Austin where the average homeprice is around 200K that you are really living within your means. Yes we're in the working class but we all choose to make purchases that are out of our means. I would rather save to take a nice vacation to spend time with my family then on a brand new luxery car.
just my food for thought

Comment: How will I spend our "windfall"? Maybe I'll invest it in the $200 water bill, or the $400 electric bill. If I have to see one more article on the president blaming Congress for this mess, right next to the articles on the oil companies posting record profits, I'll scream.

They put them selves above the rest of the country. Most of them are spoiled rich thugs. They will do any thing for money and to get votes. Comment: If the tax rebate becomes a stimulus to the economy it will pay for itself many times in increased taxes paid in and decreased services paid out. Maybe the reason why none of the candidates are talking about it -- is because it really isn't an issue.

Tax rebates are great on the surface, however, if they are borrowed money, then the hole is just getting bigger. It is also being all but ignored, particularly by the three candidates running for office.

I'm on SSI and so don't qualify, my live-in care attendant makes $160 a MONTH, so HE doesn't qualify (<$3K/yr), but we LIVE WELL and are extremely grateful. We both pay our credit cards inside the grace period and don't have any finance fees. Every bite I take, every mouthful of water I drink, I thank God for and ask Him to bless all who've brought it to me (your tax dollars aren't wasted, you get a blessing several times a day), and He's reciprocated by giving us shrimp, scallops, lamb, crab and steak to eat and bounty-ous quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables, all for $90 a month in food stamps for BOTH of us.
My income is $573/mo after tithing (I wouldn't DREAM of not showing Him how grateful I am that He takes such good care of us), but always have everything paid for and plenty to spare. The car of my dreams, computer, EVERYTHING.. paid in full; rent, etc is paid early. I have enough craft materials and toys to last THREE lifetimes, 500+ videos and dvd's in my 'library', enough potterphernalia to start a website, everything I've always wanted (well, except a llama..yet) and how did I get it all ? ... by THANKING GOD SEVERAL TIMES A DAY.
We've both been homeless, so we're grateful for a dry, clean bed to sleep in and not only a toilet and running water now, but HOT water and electricity and TV's and stuff. If we get cold, all we have to do is turn a little knob instead of scrounging up wood and trying to dry out before the cops get there. We have HOT FOOD and don't have to sneak it into jiffymart's microwave to get it that way..
When you show Him how grateful you are, God SHOWERS YOU with little 'thank you gifts', but most of all, I'm grateful to be grateful. Even when I was homeless, He took care of me, and it was those experiences that make me grateful NOW.. grateful for a roof over my head, grateful for my snuggly kitties and ESPECIALLY grateful that I don't even miss not getting a stimulus check. THANK YOU GOD ! (you are SO magnificent ! <3)

Comment: you do qualify for the stimulus. If your income is $573 after tithing you qualify. Your care giver also can qualify, the IRS sent out info as to how to factor in cost of living etc. to bring it up to the $3,000 minimum. Good for you - shrimp, computer, charge cards, kittens, and all the rest and bully for you with your homeless tales. I have been there and done that and agree the God is truly awesome and should be praised but this is not the format for it. You DO qualify for a stimulus check and I am sure you know it because the gov. sent out an info package with the proper forms to all those receiving SSI. Read your mail and be honest because God is magnificent but He does not like liers!
Comment: How to spend the tax rebate check is more like asking what kind of fish do I want for a day? $600 doesn't get you far I don't care how well you budget. My cat got a scratch or a bite and it got infected! $300 later and she's been wearing a cone around her neck until its healed. My point is that $600 is just one or two unforeseen bills. I urge people to check out this amazing book called "$500 Startup I Want You to be Happy & Wealthy" . How to start your own online business. It discusses the Recession, the change we are seeing from the old economy to the new economy. It gives you worksheets, evaluation forms and actual step by step guides to starting your own business. It's taking a "fish" ($600 rebate check) and turning it into a fishing pole. Saw the author at the LA Book Fair and everyone was amazed. He would hear what was troubling people (Recession, gas prices, Inflation, mortgage, credit card crisis, student loan crisis etc..) then ask what they liked to do and then telling them exactly what kind of online business they could build around their passion. He's giving his eBook away for free at his website www.500DollarStartup.com for anyone that's interested. He got me thinking and hoping that I can pay my debt off.

Comment: I do not get the help from the government now but they did help me many years ago when I was a single parent in your shoes. But I took that help and made a life for myself and my family like the government intended. I am just tired of US Citizens wanting handouts when they don't work. Don't blame your children for holding you back from working and not qualifying for programs like this. As far as the economy goes I think if the government would put some restrictions on the oil companies for once it would reflect on lower prices for groceries etc. I still don't understand why diesel is so much higher than unleaded gas when all it is a bi-product.

Comment: Thank you Munchkin, Vince and Rapink for what you said. This is the best Country in the World. Spend your tax refund wisely. The government should be fixing problems of debt in this country. BUT save something for an umbrella because rainy days are coming.
Comment: Everyone should remember that this money is reducing your 2008 refund by $600. This money is only an advance on next year's tax refund. Spend it wisely.
Comment: H there. Just dropping in to clarify this point. The rebate will NOT reduce 2008 refunds or raise 2008 taxes. The legislation approving it was worded in such a way that it actually is an extra give-away, not an advance to be paid back next year .
Comment: according to irs.gov, this isn't true.
Comment: This is the greatest country in the world. Can we really blame Bush for the housing mess were in? I mean all the people that bought and speculated over their means. They bought their fancy cars & drove around spending money like there is no tomorrow. Should we save their a_ _???? Anyone who works hard & have the drive has the opportunity to do so much for themselves in this country. I mean other people in other country don't get a rebate check to stimulate their lives! Be smart, work hard, & enjoy this great country you live in!
Comment: Forget the spending. Why should we bail out Bush and the economy....we didn't make it this way. And 600 isn't gonna fix the problem with rising gas and food prices and those who are losing their homes to foreclosures I say save the money for harder times ahead or pay on what we already owe. The government should be trying to fix the problem of debt. We are sinking in it....and if we don't stop we'll never see the light of day again. Forget about a vacation or buying more useless crap we don't really need lets save for a rainy day because very soon we are all gonna need umbrellas
Comment: Not everyone gets a paycheck and other asistance from the government like you BE_Happy. I feel bless everyday but that makes no accuse for the state that the economy is in today.

Comment: The media and everyone else that thinks this money will help change things are fools. With the economy the way it is, gas, food and housing prices going up, you might want to get gas and buy some food just so you can use your regular paycheck to pay bills. This is not helping to get ahead but just to help you buy gas and get a loaf of bread. They will send money overseas to help other countries but what about helping us at home. When is the real sympathy from our own government when we need it.
Comment: i happen to agree with texasaggie89's point of view to an extent. I feel sorry to the single mom who cannot work. She did make her choices in life and maybe they weren't the best - but she did not ask for a disabled child. Those are the kind of folks that should get help. But, most of the time the ones who really NEED the help do not get it. There are alot of folks that chose to be in the situation they are in. And I do not think anyone else should be penalized for their choices. Plenty of us work VERY hard and make decent money and I do not feel like we should have to give it away to folks who repeatedly make the same bad choices. ANYBODY who WANTS to put forth the effort to go to college can go. There are waaay to make grants, loans, etc for anyone to not be able to go. My uncle worked his way through dental school and nobody helped him. He helped himself! But you have got to want it enough to make the sacrifices it takes to get it. I pay for way too many entitlements for folks who just need to get off their butts and work the rest of their body as hard as they work their mouths about how poor they are. I own a business and I know from first hand experience how sorry some folks are. You just cannot help them enough. I have offered to have my company pay for college and employees just say they do not have the time to do it. Instead they want the company to pay for the tuition and books and then pay them to go to school during business hours.
Comment: To the single mom with a disabled child. I also have a disabled child and I work full time along with my husband. My child is 19 and still in school and we don't qualify for the child credit part since she is over 17. However, I am quite fine with that because the government has helped us in the past with other programs. Their are many federal programs that you should be already getting assistance from like Social Security Disability, food stamps, child support (father should help out) free health insurance including very discounted or free medications. Their are also programs out there to give you respite care so you could get out and work even if it is just a few hours a week it would do you good to get out of the house. If your getting this type of assistance look at it another way....your getting help by the government everyday. Be thankful for what you do have.

OMG I am a mother of 3 children that i have raised all by myself they are great kids and will be great parents themselves one day. I thank the president for giving me a helping hand for God sakes we all need one once in a while... For those people who are whining that have too much money try walking giving some of that money to people that you see around your neighbor hood STARVINg that you turn your blind eye to.. they might thank you for a hot meal...
Comment: Can you still file, I thought you had to do it by the 15th
Comment: She should file a return simply to receive the stimulus. Alot of people who make less than $3000/year did and their check will be in the mail soon.
Comment: how do you find out if your getting 300 dollars or 600
Comment: I still don't quite understand how borrowing a bunch of money from China to send out to everyone is supposed to help the economy, though. I mean it just raises the deficit doesn't it. So later they'll have to raise taxes to pay for it. Meanwhile a bunch of Americans buy big screen TVs made in China.
Am I missing something?
Comment: Oh! No taxes, no rebate. That sucketh.
Hubby and I just bought a house this year, we're putting ours in the bank for just-in-case.
Comment: Texasaggie, so you earn 90K in San Francisco, bfd. I earn 145K in LA and I don't need the stimulus check and am more than happy to pay my fair share of taxes. You are a spoiled brat.
Comment: i think it sucks for the people like me who are a single parent and dont work because my son is disabled who dont file taxes would love to have this money. there are more people like me out there who are in the same boat. if anyone who would need extra money because we struggle day after day its people like me and who are in my situation.we are always the forgotten ones.

Comment: won't you get $300 per kid and $300 for you?
Comment: i think this sucks . im a single mother of two and take care of my son who is disabled,so i dont work, and have very little income should get this check too. it really sucks that everyone else can get it, but the poeple like me, who will put it back into the community by shopping are always in the dark.
Comment: I can understand Texasaggie89's point of view - to an extent. The larger metro areas seem to have more jobs and opportunity for career advancements, but that comes with a hefty cost of living.
I moved to DC for a $10K salary raise a 1.5 yrs ago, but in reality was more like a $10K (or more) pay cut. I am by no means any better off financially than I was prior to moving to DC (monthly expenditures vs income) but think it will pay off eventually.
I feel your pain, Texasaggie89, it is NOT fair to 'penalize' those who have worked hard and made good life choices to get where they're at in life in favor of those who haven't. There is a definite sense of 'entitlement' in this country, unfortunately. Even as a republican, I think the 'stimulus' package was BS though... it's not solving any problems. Not to generalize, but unfortunately many of those who NEED the $$ won't spend it wisely... lucky for many of them that we have a ridiculous amount of social programs as we've become an overly-forgiving and a little-to-no consequence for your actions/decisions society.
Comment: to all those who will be reading this blog:
will those who filed there return for 2007 but didnt get anything back because they owe still getting a stimulus check?\
Big concern . appreciate all the feed back i can get ;)
Comment: TO ALL WHO WILL BE READING THIS BLOG:

Comment: well texasaggie89 get over it, maybe you should think about moving out of that rich city you live in if you can't afford to live there, and whats wrong with losing a little tax money to help out all of those people who aren't as fortunate as you and couldn't afford the kind of education that you got after all not everyone was born in a desent crib like you probably were and yes you do get a repayment for all that hard work you do, you get to like in a very nice place and you have the best delicous food and wine at your disposal and get to buy all that fine expensive clothing that you like, is that not true, and by the way in the form of expression that you wrote your comment i gather that if someone who was starving bowed in front of you begging you for food you would probably have better use for all that change rolling around in your pocket like putting it in a piggy bank and saving it then help out someone in need, i just want to comend you, your one of the reasons why so many people just can't make ends meet because all you think of is you, you, you and f--- everybody else your just interested in "whats in it for me".
Comment: Wow Texasaggie89 I did not realize that this country forced people to live in certain cities, and that moving was not allowed!!! I must have been living under a rock this whole time that I was hopping around finding better jobs in places that had lower costs of living! Gee I hope the police don't come and arrest me!
Least you forget it is those "lower" income people (you know the MAJORITY of this country by your under 90k
standard) who prop you up so you can have that cushy 90k a year job in SF. Without them this economic system would crash, and you would have to see what real work is, sweating out side just trying to get enough food to feed yourself!
You think those blue collar guys guys are all just lazy bums? Try walking in the shoes of a plumber someday. He makes less then your 90k and does more work in a week then you do in a month. O and when you do take that walk, take a good wiff, ya that smell? Just like that crap you were just talking about.
Comment: First of all, as someone else previously said, we're all entitled to our opinions. This is a board for comments. Some people feel the need to vent. We're all in different positions in life. One person's problem might be another person's solution and vice versa. In the grand schem of things, think about this. The TRULY wealthy upper class are the ones untouched. They are the ones who truly have nothing to worry about. They're money makes money. Think about the Duponts, the Rockefellers, the Morgans, the Hiltons, and the list goes on.This class makes up about 1% of the population and owns about a third of
private wealth. Unless you are in this top 1% tier, you're never "safe." My husband and I have a combined income of 100k+. We live in Texas. This affords us a decent way of life, but we still have to budget and we can't feely spend. So again, each situation is independent and relative to each individual. My brother is single, living in OC and he makes about 85K/year. This affords him a luxury vehicle and a home, but he has to spend wisely in other areas. So again, unless you're in the top tier of income earning, we're all pretty much in the "same boat." Meaning...we all must work/slave for our money. Our money doesn't make money. If we don't work, we don't eat. We're all working class. Some of us are just lower class and some of us are middle class or upper middle class. But we're all still in the WORKING class. We just have to do what we can with what we have, period.
Comment: Hey texasaggie89,
I guess that goes to show you that you can't manage your money, and hey, that's your fault. While you're sitting there with your 90K a year paying job pointing fingers at the middle and lower class citizens, just remember that three more fingers are pointing right back at you. The first thing you should do is be happy and grateful that you do make that type of income, and next you shouldn't live beyond your means. But no, you're sitting on your high horse being an arrogant, pompous, spoiled brat and whining about why you're not getting a rebate check, and it's the middle and lower class people's fault??? Come off it. How about blaming Bush for putting our economy in this mess to begin with. Oh, I forgot, you're not intelligent enough to figure that out, are you??
Comment: Everyone has the right to there own opinions. I think this rebate could be a good thing or bad thing. Guess we will have to see how it turns out. I believe people should spend it wisely and not blow it. For those who make lots of money or live somewhere cost of living is expensive you need to be proud that you never have to go through financial hardships. Some people dont have the option of going to college. One more thing, if you live somewhere expensive you should move. You choose where you live not the government or the President.
Comment: going out of country to spend your money defeats the purpose of the free money. And for people making to much money yet are baarely getting by because they live in a large city. MOVE.
Comment: Yes!!! Going to CABO. 2 grand,For being married with great kids and a wonderful wife,,,,,I LOVE this country
Comment: It works great for most of us. I'll be enjoying a vacation in the Bahamas soon. Married with kids,,,yep love it!
Comment: Frankly, the stimulus package is a crock. If you earn over
