Comment: We posted a manufacturing job at the going rate. The majority of applicants haven't referenced any of the qualifications in the job ad. Possibilities: 1) Americans have no reading comprehension skills, 2) have no manufacturing skills or 3) are applying to fulfill a requirement to collect unemployment. Now, as a small business, we can no longer afford to offer health insurance. (We did in the past but the rates became obscenely high, especially for older employees.) But it seems that some employment is preferable to no employment. The bottom line is that there are jobs available in the US right now.

Comment: Remember - Our Republican Presidents have redefined the Unemployment statistic. You don't count if you aren't checking in to your government agent on a biweekly basis. If you are discouraged or out of benefits and not calling the government you aren't counted. The "real" unemployment rate has been guessed at close to 12% by some economists.

Comment: The easiest way for the experts to fully understand how difficult it is to find work is if they themselves were displaced from their current positions with no notice tomorrow. Then and only then can they comprehend what it is really like. It comes down to networking like hell, putting out highly polished resumes to every possible recruiter, job board, and company one can find and playing the numbers as to how many or if anyone will contact you for work. I had one instance recently where company a called and said my resume looked great and that they wanted to interview me. The day after I interviewed they put hiring on hold. HR called me and said I was number one on their list to hire. Four weeks later the manager I interviewed with emailed me, said he thought I was an excellent fit for a certain position and to apply. I did and landed another interview with him and another person. After the interview they both told me that HR would contact me within the next week if I got the position. That day was today and came and went with no response. I emailed HR for a response on the status with no reply. What this tells me is that even if they love you, tell you so, interview you twice, it doesn't mean squat until that offer is in hand. Fortunately I landed a one month gig starting Monday, so it gives me another month to find something better. I am have 2 masters degrees and 3 years experience, but all I can find is contract work because almost all companies except for very few outsource what I do, and to get a position in the few is hard to do. Although it is getting easier to find work it is still difficult because I have a family to feed. Sometimes it makes me wish I still belonged to the Teamsters Union as a UPS driver. I had job security and was very well paid, but I hated the work and the company. Just my .02
