Comment: Can you please tell me the name of the Casting Director? Was it omitted by accident or design?
    Thanks

Comment: What's so good about Seinfeld is that even if you are tired of the four main characters, there are so many other characters that one can look forward to seeing. While Mr. Noonan points out many of these characters, I think it remiss if we do not include Izzy Mendalbaum among the list of highly anticipated supporting actors! "We are taking it up a notch butterbeam" has to be one of the all-time funniest lines.

Comment: Mark Peyser's argument was obviously not a good one. He must have known what the reaction was going to be like. I don't like "Law and Order", but if someone tells me they watch it all the time, I don't bother telling them I find it boring. Why do it, so many people like it, there must be some redeeming quality about it. Bottom line, Seinfeld is the best ever. When it started out, nobody watched it, except for a core group that kept on growing until it ended with 70 million people watching the final episode. That most people didn't like the final episode I could deal with, but it gave some Seinfeld haters reason to diss the show even more at the end. The fact that some people like Marc feel the need to bash the show after 10 years, is their own problem. All I can say, you are of the minority of opinion, and maybe, just maybe, lack a sense of humor.

Comment: This reviewers should have the English language revoked from them. Entertainment is lightning in a bottle. It hits people right at the right time. I can still watch Seinfeld and it still gets great laughs out of me. Much more than the shows that copied its existence. Sitcoms now are obsessed with sex jokes that cease to be funny. I hope both reviewers get a macaroni statue shoved up their rectums.

Comment: Seinfeld is timeless, much like Arrested Development, and early seasons of The Simpsons. Perhaps you would do your job correctly if you watched more television.

Comment: I feel sorry for you poor misguided soul. I watch Curb and love it. However, I watch Seinfeld every weeknight. I can watch episodes over and over. As with Curb, it took me a long time to warm up to Seinfeld in the 90's. But once onboard, I could never desert them, never! The characters and writing are wonderful, I think and it always makes me laugh. I'd be bored stiff watching comedy from the 50's. You are nuts, excuse the rudeness, but really, an expert on sitcoms saying this? A screw is missing, buddy.

  • Posted By: Mia Ornstein @ 05/08/2008 6:59:09 PM

Comment: I don't mean to be rude, but all I can say is "You idiot"! Yes, I love Curb, but I watch a Seinfeld every weeknight. You must never have loved the characters and the writing. I pity you, fool! What the hell do you know about TV? Oh, I imagine you think you are so smart. No. Seinfeld is the only good sitcom. I Love Lucy? Sorry, now that is dumb.

  • Posted By: scottishlinks @ 05/08/2008 6:18:32 PM

Comment: Wow, I guess it's all a matter of what tickles your funny bone. I catch a rerun occasionally and it's still the funniest show I've ever seen. I laugh knowing what joke is coming. Jerry is great and the best part of the show. His delivery is priceless such as "and you want to be my latex salesman" and the classic sarcasm "that's a shame". This critic is trying to make a statement and be different or maybe he just doesn't know what funny is. Those characters are all gems and the jokes never get old.

  • Posted By: samkrayzeman @ 05/08/2008 4:52:02 PM

Comment: You're krayze. Your definition of great is not the same as mine. If anything those "great" sitcoms subscribed to the tired "happy ending" storylines that you referred to. I wasnt the greatest fan of Seinfeld(namely because it didn't seem like black people existed on that show) but at least it the show took a creative chance and went outside the box and several million people agreed that the old sitcom formula was tired...

Comment: WOW!! Are you kidding me? My husband and I own Seasons 1-5. I can not tell you how much fun we have watching them. I constantly find myself watching other movies and shows and wishing they had "Notes About Nothing"(if you don't know what that is, its a commentary that is written at the bottom of the screen and tells you stupid stuff, about how a show or scene was thought up, to facts about what/who they are talking about at a particular moment)! Not only was the show clever and ever moving along, the dvd's are so much more fun. I love Jerry and congratulate him and everyone involved in the show and wish them all the success in the world!

Comment: Tell me you're kidding, right? I watched Seinfeld then and I blees the moments I can still watch it now. Even my 14 year old teemager finds it funny. And we're not even anglophones. The show was so smart that even with Jerry Seinfeld as the worst actor ever it was still a blast to watch. Actually, Seinfeld himself was the least funny of the whole cast.

  • Posted By: legendaryshowviewer @ 05/08/2008 8:57:02 AM

Comment: Even the mere mention of some of your story line examples brought a smile to my face. I would rather watch Seinfeld reruns than most of the sitcoms produced today (and do). A co-worker's boat is named "Serenity Now". I can't count the number of times someone has said "not that there's anything wrong with that" after talking about someone who is gay. A good example for using this term would be about the guy posting he could become friends with Niles from Frasier. For you two to assert that Seinfeld was anything but a
legendary show is a feeble attempt to gain noteriety. Get real.

  • Posted By: asantiago72 @ 05/07/2008 10:28:51 PM

Comment: Funny. While I was reading the article, I remembered that I always preferred Frasier to Seinfeld, for two reasons. (1) In real life I could easily become friends with Frasier, Martin, Niles, Daphne and Ross; I wouldn't spend more than half an hour with Seinfeld (his act grows stale after that), and not five minutes with George, Elaine or Kramer. (2) In Frasier you could laugh out loud for the whole episode, and in the end, all of a sudden, be moved close to tears with the most sublte of gestures. I don't have a problem admitting that Seinfeld's concept was more original, but in my opinion without so much hype, Frasier was a more accomplished show.

Comment: Marc Peyser and David Noonan have a lot of time on their hands. Of course you can't write an article praising seinfeld for what it is "greatest comedy ever" because all those articles were written a decade ago. How is "Frasier" season 6 working out for you? Do you understand their jokes? Name one other comedy that comes remotely close to having the creativity that seinfeld brought us... remember 30 rock and my name is Earl are not funny. That that your lame ass had to write this article just further proves that Seinfeld is the greatest comedy ever. go tivo csi

iT'S LIKE WONDERING HOW GREAT THE ORIGINAL kING KONG MOVIE WAS AFTER ALMOST A HUNDRED YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE.
"SEINFELD" WAS GREAT AS IT WAS AT THAT TIME, ALL FOURS LEADS AND THE REST OF THE GUEST PEOPLE AND THE SUPPORTING GUYS AND GIRLS.
ON TOP OF THAT YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THE EMPATHY BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS AND THE VIEWERS AND ALL THE INEVITABLE EFFECTS. YOU CAN'T JUST DISECT ONE SHOW AT A TIME. YOU'RE WASTING A LOT OF TIME, AND OURS.

Comment: I have purchased Seinfeld seasons one through five, and will eventually get the rest. When there's nothing good on TV (which is a lot), we pull out the Seinfeld DVDs. I get tired of watching how many different ways a person can die and/or be murdered. I like "silly".

  • Posted By: Tony the Seinfeld fanatic @ 05/07/2008 12:54:15 PM

Comment: The deaf girl can read lips and George used her to help spy on an ex. Elaine's dancing was filmed and used as the ending for Cry, Cry Again. George with the yankees has many plots, one that he had the uniforms made of cotton and they shrunk in the wash. Estelle was going to date the salesman Carl Farkas because her and Frank were seperated. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch my Seinfeld DVDs until the reruns come on at 7pm tonight. 10 years and going very strong.

Comment: Peyser: Sorry there is no nice way to say: you're an idiot. People still laugh out loud and are entertained and amused and interested by the reruns of the Seinfeld plots, and that includes tons of college grads and folks in all walks of life. Nothing besides the Lucy Show and Honeymooners have brought about real comedy that so many people could relate to. You're just another overpaid arrogant pseudo-intellectual reviewer that has to put-down popular culture to enhance your own ego. sgreen

Comment: Did any of you notice that there were TWO viewpoints in this article? Wow, everyone is bagging on the negative critique and ignoring the positive one.
While I don't find Seinfeld as laugh-out-loud funny as I did when it first aired, I give tremendous credit to the ingenuity of the writers to come up with so many clever episodes about "nothing". Also, kudos to the actors, who were outstanding. My favorite show is currently 30 Rock, and while fully aware that the show will lose it's luster for me 10 years from now, I fully enjoy the originally silly and outlandish nature of the show right now.

  • Posted By: ContenderUSA @ 05/06/2008 4:16:16 PM

Comment: What a dumb review... You don't diagram comedy like a 5th grader diagrams a sentence. Comedy is experienced. Besides, 10 years later misses the point. It was 10 years ago and everyone, and i mean everyone, knew they were going to miss the show, which is why 200 stations are still carrying it to an audience, that still loves it. Maybe you should go read War and Peace - again.

  • Posted By: tmichv @ 05/06/2008 4:11:45 PM

Comment: Get a grip everyone. "You should be fired" because you didn't like my favorite TV show is childish. Grow up, or at least turn some of that passion towards something that matters more than defending your taste in sitcoms.

I agree with Peyser. The show is a string of jokes without people you can connect to. Without that, there's no real point in watching more than once. How many times can you listen to the same joke without wanting to throttle the teller?

It would be interesting to see people try the show without its ever-present laugh track. A really funny show doesn't have to cue you in on when to chuckle.

the show was on for 9 years, not 8.
    characters don't develop?!?!!?
the only reason seinfeld's rating went up as the years went on, was because of how the characters developed and we become closer to them as "friends" as you say.
this is without a doubt the largest amount of B.S. i have ever read.

    you should be fired.

Seinfeld is still a ratings getter 10 years later, IN RE-RUNS!

Comment: The only thing I can picture aging about "Seinfeld" would be how they're still talking on landline phones and maybe Jerry's hair style at times. In essence Mr. Peyser, your criticisms of the show were what made it so brilliant in the end... it never took itself seriously. The little situations and ordinary things that they focused on for over twenty minutes were what made that show in the end... and most importantly, the characters on that show were what made them funny in the end (as well as the brilliant writing of Larry David and company). The insanity and selfishness of these people were also incredibly appealing to the viewers, just to see how far they???d go for their own personal needs and vendettas.

I???ve never seen ???The Mary Tyler Moore Show??? or ???Taxi??? myself??? but if they hold up so well, why aren???t they on just about 10 times a day on the television thanks to syndication? Maybe it???d be more fair to judge ???Seinfeld??? in that light around another 20 years from now, but the fact is that the show wouldn???t be on continuously if people thought it aged badly. We may enjoy watching George buying ???John??? Voight???s car 153 times, but we tune in for the exact reason each time??? it???s funny. If you???re looking for depth in a viewing experience, go rent any dramatic movie at Blockbuster . ???Seinfeld??? was consistently funny and compelling for many years during its run??? and that was no easy task.

these types of articles where they force a writer to take a stance on something and give an opinion is the reason why modern media is useless and poison to humanity. Ignoring facts like the fact that seinfeld, by the audience, is one of the biggest shows EVER and continues to be and how it revolutionized sitcoms and totally influenced every subsequent sitcom.

no... instead we have to hear peyser's aimless rant which basically says "c'mon guys... guys... c'mon... was it EVER funny?? really"

it's not an opinion, it's not an argument. it's nothing. which leads me to believe that peyser was just doing his job... and that he really ACTUALLY likes the show.

Comment: peyser, you're the biggest bafoon i've ever had the displeasure of reading in my life. Take your "i love friends" mentality and go home. Seinfeld, in it's writing trumps any modern sitcom and if you think that it looks tired, then you should consider that every sitcom worth mentioning since Seinfeld (none of them are really) has totally ripped off most of it's essential elements... poorly, sadly diluting them with awefully bland characters who lack any original perspective. You don't have to think it's funny, but by sitcom standards and history, it's a classic and a landmark in the genre.

furthermore, slamming jerry for his acting is simply a show of ignorance on your part.

    brutal.

Must see TV on NBC, just hasn't been the same since the show went off.....and isn't it sad that ER is still on? Let it go....enough is enough. I have made my Thursday night switch to ABC and CBS....and I can't think of a single sit com I watch anymore.

Comment: I watched the show from time to time, like whenever I wanted to see something shallow with a lot of canned laughter. I liked Kramer and George. The other regulars should have been flipping burgers. I really don't believe Seinfeld could have gotten anything more than a small occasiona;l bit if he wasn't Jewish. But, hey, he raked in $60-mil last year.

Comment: This article is ridiculous! Nothing makes me forget my real estate troubles, gas troubles and rising grocery cost troubles like the nightly repeats of Seinfeld at 11 PM and 11:30 PM each night. They're fun to watch before going to sleep and a calmer, sillier alternative to my evening news. Re-watching the half hour shows, you forget how brilliantly funny and weirdly interwoven they all were. We're lucky to have had the series and yes, it holds up after a decade.

Comment: I did not even finish reading this article. Next time, they should ask a true fan of show for an assessment. People like Marc and David are the people who still argue with me that Everybody Loves Raymond and Friends were better than Seinfeld. I don't remember any products, words, etc coming from either of those shows, just a few haircuts at best. I mean seriously, Eggo now sells "muffin tops!!" You don't get any more engrained in popular culture than that

It's a case of something being so big, that's it's inevitable that people will try to tear it down.
The fact is, as brilliant as The Mary Tyler Moore Show or All In The Family are, they are
also somewhat dated, but will always remain classics.

Comment: lol.....what the heck is this guy writing about? He is coming at this show like it's supposed to be held up to the Mona Lisa or something. If Seinfeld and the boys read this, they'll probably start laughing. It was a show about nothing! They weren't going for "Casablanca" for crying out loud.

As for his points...for every one like him, I'm sure there are many more who have the exact opposite feeling. I still watch the show nightly...sometimes 2 times a night. And I've been doing that since 1998. I cant think of another show that I've been able to watch so many times and for so long and still get a kick out of it.

I still think it's the best sitcom on TV....10 years later!

Comment: I consider Seinfeld to be one of the funniest shows to have ever been to television! I have seen each episode at least a dozen times, yet, like Mr. Noonan, I still watch, often twice a day. Sure, there are a few episodes that were clinkers, but overall, I think it maintained a quality and creative liveliness not seen in most television shows today. How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, 'Til Death...come on! Seinfeld forever!

Irreverence without profanity and implied nudity (the "nipple card," "I was in the pool!") - respected the viewer's ability to "fill in the blanks." In a world of endless bleeps and pixilation, I kinda miss that.

The reason, it made fun of what we do everyday, whine about nothing, get bent out of shape over minutia. And its message; find some humour in all we do. No shmaltz. Name one other show that ended with the principals in jail and it was funny.
