Comment: Doesn't our assult on Obama make us all guilty by association. I want to believe that most voters know that we are all influenced one way or another by the good, the bad and the ugly. It is how we choose to move forward that defines us. Once I heard Obama's speech on race, his association with his church is a mute issue for me in this campaign. It was clear to me that he his guided well in his spiritual beliefs and not church politics.

Comment: Obama can't redefine Wright. At best Obama is an atheist. On the one hand he wants everyone to believe he holds the keys to hope and change and on the other he maintains in twenty years of faithful attendance, he did not know Wright's agenda. That worries me. I was caught up in his rhetoric and was not hearing him saying nothing until the Wright event.

Comment: I've spent more time that is really productive reading these posts, but the only thing that sticks with me is the sher idiocy of Raven. His comments are so outrageous, so clownish, so venomous, that I am left thinking that maybe he isn't black after all--perhaps he is some redneck racist himself who hopes to stoke anti-African American sentiment by putting on an act: a rabid, frothing, illogical black male. If this isn't the case and Raven is what he proclaims to be, I feel sorry for him, because his life must be a state of perpetual confusion. His essential contradiction is this--African-Americans who are poor and uneducated are kept in a debilitated state by the evil Caucasian institutions, yet those same oppressed people are full of strength and resilience. Which is it? Are you weak or strong? Actors or victims? Although I don't expect you will take a word of advice from an Italian-American (Frank Sinatra), "the best revenge is massive success." Get an advanced education, get a profitable and positive career, and then you can feel a more profound superiority to less-educated, less-wealthy Caucasians. Then maybe you'll become part of the oppressive power structure rather than a pathetically whiny and irritating mosquito buzzing around the ass-end of society.

    Comment: To summarize this election:

Obama and Black supportors reminisced wrestlers whose matches are pre-arranged and play by hitting under the belt theatric causing economic downturn just to win. So, stop watching American games. Obama's white supportors are insulting of their own race as incompetent and incapable to manage their own country . Whether Obama will be elected his "super delegates", who endorsed at other's expense, must be sentenced to live in Black neighborhoods for more than four years to find out what they are really like. The democratic governor of Oklahoma who had just endorsed Obama must be executed for causing their tornadoes. The communication media of the U. S. are circus clowns not worth commenting on because they have not given honest election comments. Hillary Clinton, best candidate in history, can be identified as a unspoiling mother who has wasted her own $10 mllion just to warn her stubborn and ignorance daughter not to date strangers in the street. American voters in general are "blind" to good judgement. Call your mother! Happy Mother Day!

Comment: Oprah is annoying to me- she doesn't have kidz and knows how the American family feels- its a common theme for T.V psychologists to understand other people even if their hands on experience is non-existent. However if I were Oprah who infact isn't homophobic- racist or paranoid (?)being she affiliates herself with F.B.I; I would also most likely keep the freaked out Rev. away- why? You guess- bad publicity- hmmm maybe.
Oprah seems like the type to reconcile and that takes time- I do know she is picky and kinda discrimminatory towards what she or her producers feel as unfit or even personally unacceptable-
Racism isn't an American phenomenon nor does it discrimminate just against black skin- the Chinese have issues with other races- and Mexicans have got problems with other races and yes even black people have racial problems- as well as whites- so are we human and don't understand something very fundamental to our lives - you figure it out- birds of feather (flock together?).....and is there a thin line between love and hate?

Comment: Folks, it should be evident to all, from the comments below that racism in America is only skin-deep. Name calling and finger pointing is not and will never solve the issue. Native American, White American, Black American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Naturalized American and whatever other American there is or are, we all need to realize that WE ARE ALL AMERICANS. PERIOD. We need to work TOGETHER not against each other. Racism has, does and will continue to exist in some shape or form - be it blatant or hidden. Racism exists with "white" America in just as much as it exists with "Black" America. I have lived it and I have refused to be bogged down and wallow in that stuff. Slavery happened, it was as real as the Nazi concentration camps. Both were human tragedies of an unbelievable magnitude. One can argue that the Jews wer given their own land 9country) and have lived and worked together and moved on and prospered. But they have never and will never forget those concentration camps. Most importantly, the Jews have not allowed themselves to wallow in self-pity and deprivation. Rather, they have educated and continue to educate and learn and grow and develop and succeed. Can this be said of "Black" America? Sadly, no.
Granted, "Black' America was not given their own land (country) and supported by the superpowers of the world socially, economically and militarily. There needs to be a realistic balance. "Black" America needs to stop pointing fingers and blaming the "White" America of today for the sins of the "White" America of 'yesteryear' . On the flip-side, there should also be a concerted effort from "White" America today to recognize and accept that the unfortunate issue of slavery did occur and to help eradicate the stain and pain it caused. Accepting does not mean taking responsibility. It simply means a recognition and understanding of the issue, the resultant effects - culturally, socially and economically - and a committment to work together (not just "White" America alone but ALL of America working TOGETHER to resolve the issues.
Please let's be mature and realistic.
    Thanks.
In short, all of America need to work TOGETHER.

Comment: I agree with 95% of everything you have said, the only thing i disagree with, is the idea that black america has not sought to educate themselves or to better themselves. That is not so. The Civil Rights movement would have never existed, if not for blacks who did wish to better themselves. For most, bettering themselves is the American dream. I think the question is how are we Bettering ourselves, and by what standards?

Comment: This is what i find interesting about the Rev. Wright issue. A lot of people wish to say " We need to look past race" Why is that? Why can't we embrace race and have mutual respect? That is because the underlying feeling is that race is wrong. To offiliate with a race first is seen as an afront to those who may not have to deal with the same issues. So instead of actual empathy towards each other, we would rather toss it aside and say "look passed it." Also, for all the outraged that has been brought up in the media concerning Rev. Wright's comments, no one, and i mean NO ONE, has given any facts, to prove him wrong. Please for a second and consider why is is saying these things instead of immediately getting offended as if he specifically called out your name. That is not the case. And consider this, He said that the U.S. has backed state terrorism. OK. Is there anything in history to suggest that the US has done this? Maybe the CIA military coups in Guatemala in the 1950s, or the sponsoring of Osama bin Laden in Afganistans fight against the Russians in the early 80s to name a couple. Are these wrong? Have these moments ever happened? If not I'd say find the source and put it out there for everyone to know. His rant on the US possibly producing the AIDS virus. Of course that may sound outlandish if not insane to think, yet prove him wrong. Black people have been experimented on in the past. The most famous was called the Tuskegee experiment. This was when Black Military pilots and veterans were being injected with syphillis during the world wars i believe. (There is a reason why many black people do not like to see the doctor)This is on the books, everyone, in history. And he is working off of these moments. I say prove him wrong. If these moment did not and do not exist. Tell us so we all can be enlightened. But please, don't bash a man who did research, came up with his own hypothesis, not have a way to debunk that hypothesis.

Comment: Mr Obama isn't touting his support among blacks to prove he is a stronger candidate. All this parsing of the vote by race and gender is by polling and exit polling and media reporting. That Clintin would use these "statistics" as "proof" that she is the stronger candidate may not be racism on her part but it gives permission for "hard working white people" to keep their eyes and hearts closed to the truth. The truth is that Barack Obama is as white as he is black. He's policies for the working man and woman are as strong as Clinton's and he is honest about his politics. Why do the pundits not point out that Clinton has, by her own actions lost the black vote? Blacks are still a minority in this country, and Obama would not/could not be where he is without the support of a vast number of white Americans. I am a 55 year old woman, previous Clinton supporter but I got off the bus when it became clear it was not about doing what is best for this country but doing what is best for Bill and Hill. I live in Idaho, our demographics are pretty white. We went 81% for Obama.

Comment: Mr. Obama's race does not bother me, but his close association with Reverend Wright does. I don't believe in Mr. Obama's plan for the country and don't think he is truly qualified to become president. It appears that to prove to some black people race is not an issue is to vote for Obama regardless of his policies and associates. When the newcasters announced he had received 90% of the black vote in NC that was okay but when Hilary says he is going to have a problem carring the white vote that was racism? Why the double standard.

Comment: Comment: Let me jumped in here. I agreed color of our skin it shouldn't matter, they should not use it as an excuse living as a poor in this rich Country. I am Asian, I've been here for so many years and proud to be an American citizen. Although, I like everybody no matter what color is your skin, but I have experienced some white folks are races towards brown skins including blacks. On IVYGRAD's comment below I truely agreed of what he said, we are reminded everyday we do not belong here or not entitle to. Think about when were applying for jobs, don't we all see the enthnics form to fill out? To be honest, skin color it matters anywhere you go. That's why I'm glad Senator Obama reminded all of us about races issue in this Country.

Comment: All i can say is wow! Well actually i have more to say. I am a white male who could care less what color anyone is! I have not gotten any special treatment growing up and being a white male. I'm a middle class man with responsibilties just like everyone else and i'm tired of all the damn racist and B***S*** excuses people make up for their poor and unfare life. I have worked my a** off to be where i am at and i am tired of the whining from any group of people no matter what color you are. Grow up and take life by the A**. Make your own future and not excuses. Stop hating because your to damn lazy to get out and make a good life for yourself. This country and the people in it need a damn wake up call. I believe everyone after graduating highschool should complete two years of U.S. Military service and be proud you have the opportunities we have in this country. STOP THE HATEN AND CRYIN AND BUCK UP PEOPLE!

Comment: I am an African- American Woman who has worked very hard to become successful. I am married to an African- American man who has overcome unbelievable setbacks to become successful. I agree that hard work is important, but with everything being equal skin color is still an issue in America.

I am very sick and tired of hearing people say that skin color does not matter and that it you just work hard you can overcome. Skin color does matter in America and if we are to heal, we must become aware of that and admit it. Once we do that, we can go a very long way in resolving some of the bitterness and hate that divides us as Americans.

I am very hopeful about the candidacy of Barack Obama. I am truly hopeful that Americans will look past his skin color and realize that we, as Americans, are at a juncture where we need the commonsense and hope that he brings. We as Americans need to understand that we are in trouble! We are in jeopardy of losing our place as being the very best country in the whole world. We are losing our reputation as the place that everyone respects and comes to when world problems need to be resolved. I think Obama can help us regain the respect of everyone else in the world and help us return to our rightful position on the world stage. I also believe that he can help us resolve some very critical internal problems such as the lack of healthcare for millions of children, our energy problems, our problems with the national debt and a myriad of other critical issues we face.

I disagree with you when you say that race does not matter; however, this presidential contest is going to be a litmus test. If Obama, who is the best candidate and who can inspire the change that we need, wins then I will gladly agree that race no longer matters in America. If Clinton receives the nomination or if McCain wins the election, I will continue to believe that race matters in this country and that racism is going to ultimately destroy us from within.

Comment: I respect that fact that " to you" race does not matter! but let me explain something to you, it does exist not just with whites, but with blacks also. I understand that you feel the need to express the fact that as a white man you had to work hard, but you would never no what it feels like to be a monority. One thing I will agree with is because this is happening some ignorant blacks think that is an excuse to be lazy but again I have to stress to you that you should look up the facts and also when you here different racist stories whether its under paying jobs, illegally being pulled over by a white officer, do you really believe that it has nothing to do with skin color? If you won't open your eyes to the facts, then I have reason to believe your just as bad as the racist a*% holes that denies us equal liberty and rights.

Comment: Regarding the statement by LESAPAL is exactly why America is not ready to have a real discussion about race. A white person has the privelege of white skin. They never have to think about race. A BLACK person can not escape being black. No one allows you to escape your blackness. You are reminded everyday.

Comment: It seems like with black people no one is supposed to bring up the fact that your black, or to make any comments about the differences between whites and blacks- but I dont go to church to be taught how to be a white woman, I dont even think about the fact that im white, I had nothing to do with that decision and I could care less, most of the people I know could care less, but blacks are so completely caught up in being black, I just dont get it , why would obama need to go to church to learn what it is to be a black man? If he doesnt know by now then someone needs to tell him he is black, you know what, I could tell him what it means to be a black man or a white man or a hispanic or a woman, it means you get your a$$ up every morning and go to work, pay your taxes, feed your family-buy gas for your vehicle if you can afford it, thats what it means, why doesnt anyone realize were all in the same boat?

trying to make hatred seem real cool
keep talking thosefactsyou come off the fool
    you're prejudicejust look at you
you're prejudicedand you're gonna be judged too
    unite the race what listen

    Comment:
This has nothing to do with Obama, who could never seriously claim to relate to what happened, and is still happening to people of color in this country ??? it???s a response to some delusional comments posted in this column. One of the worst things to feel is the a of being feared for no logical reason-- just because of your color. This country was built on the backs of black slaves, and would never had gotten where it is today hadn't been the case. America was a big Abu guraib prison camp for black people over a span of four centuries, a virtual nightmare. If it had happened to white folk, they would be seeking ways to exact retribution, even on the perpetrators' distant descendants. No one has felt the subtle racism that many especially young black men are made to endure. Yeah, some make it in the professional world, just like some are allowed to become big rappers or ball players. It's not an issue that some do make it--some do, albeit regulated ???discouragement, availability of controlled substances and the lucrativeness of its market in the absence of viable alternative opportunities. The issue here is there is great socio-economical disparity in this nation--a hidden status quo agenda. Because you can't see it or feel it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It sort of focuses on you. They couldn't even allow a real African American who shares a common history with the rest of the American people to run for the presidency. Again, the fear. Is it a coincidence that police are acquitted whenever a black man is beaten to death, shot to death while unarmed, or dragged behind a pickup truck???by them, besides making up a disproportionately large section of a highly profitable prison system? Yet it has nothing to do with American historic legacy? Even in youth, many of my very intellectual and successful friends speak of how their teachers of the 50???s and 60???s would try to refer them to remedial class (special education) rather than seek solutions to their problems.
Some were social, and some were just because he needed glasses. Make him think he???s retarded or slow???he???s black. It???s all synonymous. I not saying this out of romanticism or from a ungawa black powa pulpit. I???m talking from experience. Because it took some of us to leave the country to make a successful business in a foreign country to see the picture clearly. Many other black men --perhaps smarter, better educated, more resources than I ever had still can???t beat their way out of the American paper bag. I lived it. It???s only those who aren???t willing to face up to the truth of what some their ancestors perpetuated in history, and have no plans to attempt to erase its lingering legacy, who make such blanket and ill-conceived comments. Yet, some can still say with a straight face, ???Nothing???s wrong!???.

    Comment: WE FORGET ONE THING!
Look at the Jews: they SUFFERED THE WORST OF ALL INSULTS just a generation back -- yet, they survive and DRIVE ON! Many immigrants come here with much less than even poor African-Americans -- and I'm including Black AFRICANS -- and are successful. I have personally met Vietnamese boat people, who were even rejected by the earlier more wealthier and educated Vietnamase expats who came to the US, and DESPITE lack of money...knowledge of the language or culture...many without any families or friends -- THEY MADE IT THROUGH HARD WORK. You can't blame the color of skin all the time: I see TRUE Africans (a white South African can also be African, by the way), who are disgusted by the attitude of many American Afro-Americans! One asked me why he's only had a single white customer steal from him, but it's a constant bother from his fellow "brothers" (and he's in a mixed poor white/black neighborhood).

I do NOT care what color your skin is: but if I read that Black German shephards constantly are biting people, yeah...I'll be more careful. Same with black crime: sure we're more concerned because there's a higher % of black-committed crime.

SOLUTION? It starts in the SCHOOLS and FAMILY -- CULTURE is to blame too. When rap artists denigrate women...when they push wearing bling...when getting an education is called "Acting White"....that hurts my black brothers n' sisters. WE DO NEED YOU. Drop the anger and create solutions. Stop waiting for the Fed Gov't make things happen: do what many of the Latino workers that I've worked with: WORD HARD. I've hardly ever seen any problems with them, WHY? Yet, I cannot begin to tell you the "attitude," unwillingness to not constantly socialize on the job -- and just WORK -- in this federal agency I'm with. I'm ALL ABOUT helping others: I went to the Million Man March and was prevented by my military father from the March on Washington as a 15-yr old. I participated against white racism during the Poor People's March in South Carolina (and quite my church when they exhibited racist attitudes.)

Yet my black brothers and sisters are not trying to PULL THEMSELVES UP BY THEIR OWN BOOTSTRAPS like the many immigrants who came into this country. My father was from a very poor farm community in Oklahoma during the Great Depression: he took him many years, but he finally was able to be the first of his generation to finish college on his own (work one year, go to college one year, alternating). It can be done: but these young black kids coming up -- and the white ones too -- need to know that it's EDUCATION and HARD WORK that's the answer: not blame.

Comment: Hi, Big bad white guy here... and I'm here to say that all this baloney about me takin the blame for all the wrong in the young black mans life is a bunch of crap. I nor my ancestor own slaves or owned slaves. The back bone of this country was built by the Chinese who did all the hard work.. you know, like the rail road from east to west. The big accomplishments and the like. Black slaves made the southern slave owner rich by picking cotton and forging the future of this counrtry. What a buch of cop out crap you guys are spinnin' off for whoever to read.
Oprah is proud to have whitey (her words) workin for here. Go see youtube and see what she says behind you backs america. The church of Oprah is for real and she hate whitey. No secret there, just don't hate her back or you will have to pay reffermations for what her great great great grand father did...What? Oh he just sold her ancestors to the highest bidder. Yeah that's right, or did we forget that the slave sold were sold by their families for a profit and all this over 200 years ago when this was acceptable everyday practice. Now do want to be mad at soemone? Be mad at the strugling third world countries that still sell their their children into savery... or do they not count because they are not black enough??????? You folks need to jump off and get into doing something better than just blaming the current white guy for all your troubles. What a waste of time that is. You say we will never move forward to whole while you are living in the past, and not your past either, the past of some unfortunate folks who were sold out for a buck by their momies and daddies. Hey lets break the tred and put the blame where it really lays, and that those same mommies and daddies that sold them to begin with, or maybe they were looking generations ahead and sacrificing their youth for the good of their decendants.. ever look at it that way. Nope, its just too easy to blame the big bad white guy. Hes been the catch all for anyone who has no direction or drive. Its all whiteies fault I cant get a job that doesnt have fries involved. Comment: To Ignat:

One I think your whole post is ridiculous and has absolutely nothing to do with the article above. Two am I supposed to feel guilt for slavery even though my first ancestors didn't come to America until after 1912, when slavery had already been abolished just because I happen to be white. NOt every "White" person in america has ancestors who owned or participated in slavery so if you want to talk about blanket statements maybe you shouldn't make them yourself.

Also you mentioned white people can acquitted when commiting crimes against blacks. I guess you forgot OJ Simpson practically beheading 2 people and walking free or Kobe Bryant being a rapist and yet being named MVP of the NBA. As there are circumstances of injustices in the black community there are also circumstances of injustice in the white community. Let's take for example the Philadelphia white cop who was shot to death trying to stop a bank robbery by three black men carry automatic weapons.

What you must realize is that the world is not perfect, it never has been. All throughout history every race, color, creed, religion, ethnicity, nationality has been oppressed at one time or another. And just as much as you think that slavery hurt the black people, those other people hardships hurt them and were just as painful and important to them. There is prejudice and racism everywhere and in every group. Just as there are white racist people, there are black racist people and hispanic racist people and chinese racist people, etc... Maybe if you want to make change in the world, you have to start with yourself and realize that things that happened two hundred years ago shouldn't still be used as a cruch, otherwise there would be a lot of pissed off people in the world.

Have enough dignity about yourself, and ask Opray to her face. It is not wright (right) for the media to inquire to the American public about some one else's concern, when they could well ask the individuals themselves. Please respect the American people and yourself, because this concern is over, null and void. Good luck !

Sharpton and all of these 'preachers' are no more than lightening rods to draw constructive and dynamic energy from issues seriously effecting the African American community. These individuals, to me, are pesonifications of the favoured house negro of the slave era who always appeared magically when he saw his folk gathering to bring about a change in their condition.
But, as a people, we never learn from our mistakes, and we insist on doggedly hanging on to these opportunistic, signifying, secret order whipping boys. (Omar)

    Comment: Something Wasn???t Wright

The title should be "something isn't right", meaning that it is not right to keep publicizing the pastor. What's the point? Something wasn't right when you decided to rehash the pastor's doing , question those whom you need to and not the American public. I am sure that you can deliver a more worthy concern, the pastor has retired and maybe you should attend the church so that you can recieve first hand output. I refuse to entertain the thought, wish you good luck in your concern.

And Obama didn't join the church until 1988 right before he went to Harvard. In his book Dreams of My Father, Obama writes: "REVEREND WRIGHT SHRUGGED. 'SOME OF MY FELLOW CLERGY DON'T APPRECIATE WHAT WE'RE ABOUT. THEY FEEL LIKE WE'RE TOO RADICAL." Obama knew exactly who Wright is.

Comment: As an African American I am offended by the statement that "Oprah had been around black churches her entire life, so Wright's anger filled sermons weren't surprising to her". God forgive me, but that is a bunch of bull!

I am an African American, and have grown up in black churches my entire life. Most black churches and black preachers, do not, and I repeat, do not, preach hate filled racist speeches where they are calling white people names. Wright, and I refuse to refer to him as Rev. does not represent what black churches are all about, even though he is trying to hide under the umbrella of being black now that he has been exposed. It is a bold faced lie to assume that all black churches preach that way, simply because you all heard Wright preaching nonsense like that in the church. Most black preachers preach more about God, and Jesus and stick to the text instead of giving straight history and political sermons. Wright is a clown who is not to be taken seriously as far as I am concerned. I am ticked that he is out still running his stupid mouth trying to take center stage and ruin Barack's chances at Presidency. He is a disgrace and disgust and he is out to try and get attention and make money at this point!

Also, I hate this article, because if Oprah wants to speak on why she left the church, let "her" speak on it. You don't have the right to assume why she left, or get haters who could possibly be lying tell the story of why she left. You guys are just not going to let this mess go! Just let it go! Barack is not racist, and he is not condoning what Wright is saying he has denounced him, so let's move on to issues on economy, war, etc,, and stop all this division!

Comment: I'm sure many others hearing Rev. Wright's comments up and left the church - regardless of their business or political risks. I was raised in the Nation of Islam because my grandparents joined in the 1950s. By the time I was a teen I was weary of such rhetoric, and as a young woman in search of a good church to join - for religious-based fellowship - I visited one of the large, popular churches in the nation's capital. When the pastor sounded the familiar 1960s nationalist rhetoric, I up and left.
Many individuals in the African American community are disgusted with certain "leaders" exploiting our oldest pains and fears.

Read the book "Little X" or "My Life After Islam" by Sonsyrea Tate and you'll understand the disgust with these leaders' exploitation of the people they claim to love.

Comment: I am continuously floored by those members of the African American community who use the word "we" when referring to whom endured the injustices of slavery. May I just point out that there is NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON ON EARTH who is here to tell us of how they endured American slavery. Nor is there a single person on earth who can tell us how it feels to be a slave owner from the 18th century. Why? Because this is the 21st century. Has any black person stopped to think that their direct ancestors were never slaves? I missed the part in History class where EVERY single black family that has ever lived endured slavery. Has any black person stopped to think that they may be descendants of some king in some far away country who owned slaves themselves? No .... none of these questions cross the minds of today's black community. Why? Because if you were not "victimized" by this possible travesty that occurred 300 years ago, then what would you blame for every strike of bad luck in your life? What a perfect scape goat! Didn't get the job, someone didn't hold the door, couldn't catch a cab, that guy looked at me weird .... IT MUST BE BECAUSE I'M BLACK!!! In closing, I would like to point out that there are people in the world who are starving for food, dying in their own beds, watching their schools and friends and families being blown to bits in the street, drinking from streams where animals defecate, and enduring suffering we Americans, no matter our color, can never know anything about. So, please, save your empathy for those who deserve it.

        Comment:
This has nothing to do with Obama, who could never seriously claim to relate to what happened, and is still happening to people of color in this country. One of the worst things to feel is the a of being feared for no logical reason-- just because of your color. This country was built on the backs of black slaves, and would never had gotten where it is today hadn't been the case. America was a big Abu guraib prison camp for black people. If it had happened to white folk, they would be seeking ways to exact retribution, even on the perpetrators' distant descendants. No one has felt the subtle racism that many young black men are made to endure. Yeah, some make it in the professional world, just like some are allowed to become big rappers or ball players. It's not an issue that some do make it--some do, albeit regulated???discouragement, availability of controlled substances and the lucrativeness of its market in the absence of viable alternative opportunities .The issue is, there is a very great social disparity in this nation--a hidden status quo agenda. Because you can't see it or feel it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It sort of focuses on you. They couldn't even allow a real African American who shares a common history with the rest of the American people to run for the presidency. Again, the fear. Is it a coincidence that police are acquitted whenever a black man is beaten to death, shot to death while unarmed, or dragged behind a pickup truck, besides making up a disproportionately large
section of the very profitable prison system. Yet it has nothing to do with American historic legacy? Even in youth, many of my very intellectual and successful friends speak of how their teachers of the 50???s and 60???s would suggest they be moved to remedial class.
This happened to a wide swath of the African American population???programmed you to have think you were retarded. I not saying this out of romanticism or from a ungawa black powa forum. I???m talking from experience. Because it took me to leave the country to make a successful business in a foreign country to see the picture clearly. Many other black men, smarter, better educated, more resources than I ever had still can???t beat their way out of the American paper bag. I lived it. It???s only those of you who can???t face the guilt of what your ancestors did and what you aren???t willing to b buy that legacy, who make such blanket and ill-conceived comments.

      Comment: Yourstruly,
I can honestly say that I agree with you to some point. I am considered minority but, I am from a VERY wealthy background that has provided me with many opportunities. Currently, I am a very successful business owner and my wife is a very successful in the field of law. However, when I think of our backgrounds and how that has entitled "us" (her and myself) to be part of what would be considered the "elitist" group of minorities, this easily defines our good life. My wife, on the other hand, deals and sees a lot of situations that exist in this current time where people (white and black) are being discriminated against in some of the most profoundly political ways. Most of this is NOT looking back on history but, has a lot to do with what is happening right now. When I compare our lives, it is hard to relate to this sort of thing still existing but, having to step outside of the elitist circle and taking a good gander at reality is a different concept and even my wife and I had to come to the realization that bias, bigotry and prejudice still exist! Even in todays younger generations. It may not be as widespread as it were in the past but, it is still a problem.

What I can honestly say is that I think the past has fueled these biases to become a two way problem; some whites still belittle blacks while blacks have learned to adopt the process of returning the gesture. I don't think the majority of our current society thinks and feels this way but, even in it's smaller numbers, these forms of biases still exist.

Comment: Why Some White People Have To Vote For Obama? It is extremely difficult for a person with any intelligence to understand why some White people have voted for Obama. To vote for him is simply an admission that America's overwhelmingly White majority are incompetent and incapable of managing and leading their own country. That Whites have to reduce their status themselves by asking a Black man whose ancestors were not even American to do such an important jobs. Are they too lazy to do it themselves?

    • Posted By: gwhitt @ 05/08/2008 20:35:27

Comment: First, America is the melting pot. It is NOT an exclusive to one or the other but, the home of MANY people of all nations that uphold it's Declaration and honor the Constitution. Last I knew, THIS was the nature that designed America; not color.

When people tend to look at exclusive ownership then it becomes a historical issue of the white face or the Indians. There is no honor in what is stolen so, when it comes to pairing skin color with ownership, that is a very delicate issue that should NOT be tread upon unless you are truly willing to look at a white man as a criminal for stealing what was NOT theirs. In this, there is NO honor to any Constitution.

Advice: Tread lightly on this issue.... settle for the "fact" that America is a melting pot and whomsoever is willing to respect her by upholding the Declaration and honoring the Constitution is good to be American... Otherwise, you cannot speak liberally of ownership without incriminating oneself by belittling ones common nature to that of dishonorable, immoral, disrespectful theives!

What's important here is the levels of political corruption going on in both camps. People have pointed out a lot of the underhanded deals that Obama has done, but we all know (or should know) that Clinton has taken part in many of the same kinds of shady deals. If you want proof, check out the all mighty Youtube which folks seem to love so much. Once again, BOTH candidates are guilty of unethical dealings and taking advantage of their constituents. But what did you expect? It's how politicians get paid and they do what their "sponsors" tell them to. The media has chosen time and time again to go with the easy sell, so it's no wonder why none of this is getting reported on. I mean, that would require REAL journalism. I wonder why you people put so much faith in those hacks anyway.

Learn to think for yourselves, do some research, and be independent. It should be obvious by now that the two party system is not the answer.

Comment: Let me take a moment to explain to you the foundamental differences between slavery and Holocaust /Salem Witch Trials. Once the SAlem Witch trails and the Holocaust came to an end, Jews and those accused of witch craft were able to move own with their lives. I'm not saying that Jewish people did not endure hardships afterward but understand this, here we are in 2008, 100 years after slavery, African American are still having to fight for their rights. Whether you want to believe it or not, African Americans are still today the victims of injustice. Unfortunately you can not walk in my shoes and experince the racism that I endure on an almost daily basis. The laws may have changed to outlaw slavery but the mindset of many White Amercans has not changed. This is why minorities are still forced to fight for their rights. Since there are so many of you who are obviously blind to what is going on in the world, I suggest that you sit down with your African American friends, associates, or co workers and ask them to speak honestly with you about their experiences maybe this will help you understand why African American still view themselves as victims. I don't fault White America, I just believe that you can not relate because it is not your life.

I was not allowed to use the bathroom, make a telephone call nor wait inside of the "Whites Only" section for someone to pick me up. Standing up outside after dark , three boys in a car took me in a cemetery, raped me and left me there to die. The God that I prayed to gave one of the boys a conscience and he came back a few hours later and he dropped me off a mile from my home. Rev. Unless you have walked in my shoes you don't have a clue as to what I went through growing up being black. Obama happened to find Rev. Comment: you know nothing about wight, the church or obama but you know it's racism. That's plain irresponsible and ignorant. What are you doing by saying that? It was not about race although that was used as an explanation about *black churches*. It has to do with Anti-american rage. What was the purpose of your comment?

Comment: What are you going on about? What is the purpose of YOUR comment?
It is clear that both sides have negative aspects, and it is clear that we need to look at both sides. The only reason people are concentrating on Obama and his "racism" or those of his church or anything is because we Americans are obsessed with race. We are obsessed with the fact that someone can be of a different background and still be a good president, a good person. Deep down inside, as a country, in a place of our hearts no one wants to look at or acknowledge, we cannot stand the fact that African-Americans, once slaves to us whites, can actually be good, normal people and can actually show potential to be a very good president.
        GO OBAMA!

Comment: Wow, slalom! Some common sense coming from a white person! I don't know what to say. But you are correct. It is hard for some whites to view a black person in the way you described. Even in the twenty-first century, some whites "WANT" to believe that blacks are inherently inferior. Even when one stands in front of them who is far superior--in every way. This Presidential race is ALL about race. If whites admit to this, then sincere talks regarding race issues can presume.

Comment: So I guess in the same manner it is hard for some black people to realize that not all white people are racist or even give a crap that Obama is black. It's funny to me that people are still using this race argument when white people are turning out in record numbers to vote for Obama. So wouldn't that pretty much disprove your theory that white people couldn't possibly imagine a black man as president, they are voting to try and help him achieve that goal. Although I agree that there are a number of white people who won't vote for him strictly based on race, there is a number of blacks who are voting for him based solely on his race which in reality is just as bad. We should also take into account that some white, like myself, could give a damn about his color and don't vote for him because we don't think he is the right person for the job. Which last time I check is neither a crime nor racist. I vote based on who I feel would do the best job who cares what color or gender they are. I think it might be the black community that has the need to hold on to the race card, because if it's gone what the hell else do you have to use for an excuse.

Comment: I like to hear white people like you talk about how a person's race and color means nothing to them. How they are not a racist, bigoted, or hateful. And yet--just like you--you always find a way to show your "true" colors. Every stupid "we-are-the-world" thing you said was canceled out by your last bigoted, racist comment. You ARE the "Typical White Racist"--a coward afraid to show your true colors, unless some black person like me gets too UPPITY--huh? You rednecks have been playing the race cards since cards were invented. You people whine like no other race in this country. Your days are numbered, that's why most of you are afraid. Retribution! But don't worry--we are a forgiving people--GOD will punish you.

Comment: People can speculate on why Oprah left Trinity; however, Oprah has declined to comment. You don't see anyone sifting through Hillary's pastor's sermons. That's right...Hillary doesn't attend church on a regular. It is truly unfortunate that this campaign has compromised a 20 yr. relationship and bastardized the Obama's religous roots. They cannot even serve God in peace. it is important to remember that Obama did not serve Wright...he serves the Lord.Wow! it speaks volumes to the depths people will go in the name of having their way. The Clintons are an embarrassment to the American people!

Comment: Well I guess when Hillary finally says good-bye to the campaign trail, I will be more than gald to say HELLO PRESIDENT MCCAIN. All you haters and troublemakers who called Hillary supporters names can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Because a vote for Obama is a vote against my principals. I love my children and I would never put them through the abuse Obama and his wife sacrificed their children for the love of his political career. Thats it. I have a feeling people like Obama supporters would support a civil war in our own country should things not go his way.

Comment: You'd think if Oprah had such a large endorsement going for Obama and that Wright was known for being a spiritual advisor....you'd think there would have been a RED FLAG waving somewhere!

Comment: Thank you for this article. It helps me with a major missing piece to this puzzle. Religion is a very personal
part of a human experience. I have not ever heard of any other animal seeking to join a Church. I know people who take their dogs and cats to church. But back to the missing piece. Only Oprah can really say
why she left Trinity. And no one has the right to interfere with this decision. Sen. Obama went seeking,
found a place where he could learn and investigate Gods Goodness. That Goodness came by the
Word of God. While in the church he met people, established links and most likely formed some lasting
relationships. None of us agree with everything we hear. The Bible encourages us to study and learn.
The Pastor and many times other significant linkages in the church, our elders have a lot to do with our
decisions to stay or move on. Sen. Obama had a problem, took his time to work through it, sought
counsel, weighed his options and made a decision. This decision making process impresses me and
I hope that those who would say he lacks experience need to review his problem solving processes. He
also needed courage, he needed calm and he was able to go home (to his rock) his spouse and the
two of them decide what would be best for the. I wish that I could have seen any parts of this process
used by Pres George Bush in 2001. He did not listen, failed to wait for the necessary intelligence, rushed
to Irag and continues to refuse to admit that his problem solving process was flawed. Sen. Obama
is my choice. )bama , 08
