Comment: So what the author is essentially saying is that if Archuletta wins, it will be thanks to a mormon conspiracy, not due to any talent on David's part.

Comment: Oh brother, do you think that every mormon sits glued to their tv sets following the progress of every mormon on the countless reality shows? And do you think, with the millions following these shows, that the mormons are a large enough voting bloc to sway the results? Sorry, I have much better things to do with my time that waste it on reality tv. And I would venture to say that the vast majority of my congregation feels the same way. Isn't it refreshing that there are people out there in this world that have values that don't follow the current political correctness of the day? Maybe that's why the average joe/jane take a liking to these "culturally disconnected" mormons.
Atkinson, you talk about cultural disconnect? You probably have a mormon living next door that you don't even know about because you're out of touch with the culture of your neighborhood.

Comment: Jamake, I think you need to take a look at your own opiniated mouth for a minute... you lay an attack on Mormons like we are animals... you stereotype us, like we are all some breed of monster...and while doing that, you are attacking us in the way that you have 'not very politely' told us not to attack others. We are also human, we do not claim to be perfect, and each of us have our weak areas too... You say that we preach hatred for gays, single mothers and women who have had abortions...well, I am a devout Mormon, and I have a gay relative, a single mother and a close friend who had an abortion... do I hate them... ABSOLUTELY NOT... so perhaps you need to not be such a hypocrite and not stereotype a religious grroup that you obviously know nothing about..don't tells us all about hatred when you quite obviously have some hatred issues of yoiurown...we are all just human, trying to do our best

  • Posted By: Ticky85 @ 05/10/2008 4:23:41 AM

Comment: Jamake, I don't think you should be judging the general Mormon population and laying on an attack like you just did. Talk about hatred... I think your comment quite clearly shows a pretty deep hatred of your own... for Mormons. Likewise, we are also not animals, we also have the right to exist without constant persecution from people like you...Mormons are humans to, and we are less than perfect. As for judging the gays, the single moms and the women who have had abortions... my uncle is gay, my mother was a single mom and one of my best friends had an abortion...does that mean Iat mean I hate them? ABSOLUTELY NOT...they are very dear to me...so perhapos your own hatred and racism and religious conflict causes yiou to stereo type Mormons and hate us. Think next time you make a judgement...cos I think you contradict your own argument.. quite a hypocrite. Like every other human...we have to gtry too...

Comment: and don???t be attacking the gays. leave the gays and lesbians alone! or I will open my big opinionated mouth again and telling you mormons what to do and where to go.

so what if they enjoy being with each other. they aren't harming anybody. leave them be.
they aren't evil. only in your eyes you think they are sinners. tell your church leaders to go stick a *** up their tight virgin mormon a$$es!! stop preaching hatred for any race of people or anyone's sexual preference either.
don't be starting to attack them like you did with black people, native american indians, asians, etc.

LEAVE THE FCUK THEM ALONE!! don't condemn them, preach to them, hate them - whatever your good at.

YOU MORMONS TAKE A LOOK INTO YOUR OWN DARK, EVIL,SICK, DEMENTED & COLD HEARTS BEFORE YOU START JUDGING A RACE OF PEOPLE, GAYS, SINGLE WOMEN WHO ARE MOTHERS OR WOMEN WHO HAD AN ABORTION. PEOPLE ARE FREE TO LIVE THEIR LIVES AS THEY PLEASE WITHOUT YOU IDIOTS TELLING THEM THEY ARE BAD OR SINNERS. JUST BECAUSE YOU LIVE COMFORTABLE LIVES AND HAVE GOOD CLEAN RICH HOMES DOESN???T GIVE YOU A RIGHT TO JUDGE ??? ANYBODY!

FOR CHRIST'S SAKE THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO EXIST!! THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS. NOT ANIMALS.

grow some big mormon balls and be a real christian and show love, compassion, forgiveness and charity for them LIKE YOUR FRIGGIN' JESUS CHRIST DID!!!

Comment: Jamake: I always feel bad for people like you that have so much anger and hatred stored up inside for people you don't even know. Mormon's aren't any different than anyone else. People who actually know Mormons usually like us. You really need to check your facts before you go posting completely ridiculous and uninformed comments. It seems like you have a bit of an anger problem - screaming in a pillow can sometimes help relieve that type of stress, jk.

Comment: just because a race of people isn't christian doesn't automatically make them devil worshippers. so what if they practice their own religion or spirituality? it's their culture and beliefs - don't try and push your demented religion down their throat and call them devil worshippers!

for crying out loud. not all people are christians on this planet. they have right to be black, native american indian or asian. doesn't make them lacking in soul and a good heart.

i am so ashamed of being a white person and ex-member of the church now. saying you blacks, indians, asians, etc. have no spirit or soul or god won't love you 'cause you don't believe in mormonism. we have no right in condemming a race of people and not welcoming into the church and calling them a cursed people, be it in the past or not.

god loves you if your black or red or yellow. no matter what. even if you happen to be gay also. and he will still love you if you aren't a MORMON!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: GigiMiller @ 05/09/2008 18:28:24

Comment: As an Ex Latter-day Saint, you should know that we do not shun Blacks, Asians, Indians. Yes, there was a period of time in early history that Blacks could not hold the priesthood. They were never denied membership. Thankfully that has changed. My caucasian daughter is married to a wonderful black man. We believe we are all equal in the site of God.

For those who think we as Latter-day Saints do not believe that non Christians are considered evil are wrong. My very best friend is Jewish and I have a great respect for her beliefs. Yes, there are many that have their own belief system and the LDS Church honors and respects all those that believe in serving their fellow man and doing good works or whatever. The only thing I think we might have a problem with are atheists that actively try to turn Christians away from their belief system.

I live in the East and in the Bible belt. Because our LDS members are so actively engaged within the communities as Lawyers, Doctors, Politicians, Teachers, etc. We are becoming widely respected. It's sad though to have those not of our faith be so biased and unkind as to find fault with us as a people.

We are not all perfect and will make mistakes but aren't we all to love our fellow men?

  • Posted By: dbl_playball @ 05/09/2008 2:11:15 PM

Comment: Look, when blacks were being restricted from holding the priesthood by the LDS church, it was a time when socially that was the nature of the world the founders lived in. Not all things are explicitely explained to us by God. Some things we are left to disciver for ourselves. This one such thing. The leaders finally came to the realization that such a practice was morally wrong and sought permission from the Lord to change their practices to which I am sure the Lord responded, by saying "it's about time you asked that question...yes, by all means please do it!"

Every religion has had a period that it may not be too proud of and they then must work all the harder to overcome those periods where the ill's men's hearts held sway over the common goodness. Understand that our hearts are good, we accept all men and women and we hope for all things good.

THEN AFTER THE 1960's WERE OVER - SUDDENLY THEIR GOD TOLD THEM IT WAS OKAY FOR BLACKS AND NATIVE AMERICANS AND ASIANS TO JOIN THEIR CHURCH! AND ALLOWED THEM TO HOLD THE PRIESTHOOD ALSO.

    HOW FCUKING STUPID IS THAT??!!!

Comment: I've been a Mormon my entire life and never once have I felt "controlled" by the church like "jamake" states in his/her comment. The LDS church is all about choice. No one in the church is forced to do anything and like most decisions in life we are encouraged as members to seek answers for ourselves through study and prayer. For "jamake" to infer that the Church tries to "control one's life-cult like a grip" couldn't be further from the truth. I'm proud to be a "Mormon" and am proud of Mormon's and those of other faiths who are true to their principles. To liken the LDS church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) to the FLDS church is wrong. The LDS church doesn't practice polygamy and hasn't since the late 1800's, nor does it condone abuse of children in any form. It's members are not confined to some compound and live ordinary lives in the midst of society. The two faiths are worlds apart.

Comment: used to be mormon but quit. way too much control over one's life - cult like grip! best thing i could've done in my life. and no, just 'cause you aren't mormon anymore or aren't mormon you aren't going to hell.
most of the world isn't mormon or christians.

must SUCK BIG TIME TO BE A MORMON now. with all the negative press in the media about those mormons in texas and how they abused and had sex with those innocent teenage girls. and most americans won't be able to tell difference that they are a breakaway sect of the mormon church or the furtherest thing from the real mormon church. they will just think they are regular mormons.

YEAH, IT SUCKS TO BE A MORMON. ANYBODY WOULDN'T DARE SAY THEY ARE ONE FOR FEAR OF RIDICULE AND HATE.

Comment: I have been reading these comments with interest, astonishment and amusement (at times). It is good to have an open discussion and most of the LDS I know are as appalled as any other sort of Christian (Baptist, Methodist, etc.) by the situation in the RLDS encampment in Texas. Like all things filtered through the media we will have to wait for the other shoe to drop I imagine. As to the article (what?) ~ it's interesting I suppose to see that Mormons participate in the world of TV as much as anyone else, but I'm not sure that huge amounts of time should be allocated to TV in general, nevermind these *reality* shows. Not very many folk I know have this sort of *reality*. Guess I'm just an old-head who can't get mine wrapped around the significance (if any) of highlighting any particular segment of the population for being self-serving, no matter who OR what. Service should *I think my gmom and mom taught me* uplift and support OTHERS...

Comment: JAMAKE: I always think it's great to hear debates from different points of views. But let me caution you...if you are truly trying to sway other's opinions, it's probabl best that you at least make valid arguments instead of just screaming one-liners. For example, how can you be brainwashed and choose to be mormon at the same time. Your contradictions in your arguments show your lack of wisdom and isn't really changing anyone's mind; just making you look foolish.

Comment: In response to oxymoronic's concern that the LDS church use it's time to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and administer to the needy, I invite him and others to visit ldsphilanthropies.org to see how much the church is involved in these things. It's not necessary to "sound a trumpet in the street" to announce charitable acts, but those who seek will find how involved the LDS people are in helping others, without regard to borders or
    beliefs.

  • Posted By: oxymoronic @ 05/09/2008 5:19:07 AM

Comment: Two other random (and not necessarily complementary or complimentary) thoughts:
    1. The internet is a wonderful thing, but it creates an amazing opportunity for people to anonymously display their ignorance by using poor grammar, poor spelling, poor sentence structure, poor logic, and unpersuasive arguments to comment on subjects about which they apparently have little or no knowledge or understanding. Exhibit A: see comments below. Exhibit B: see comments just about anywhere else on the internet.
    2. If Mormons and their enemies would both take half of the time they spend either defending or condemning the LDS religion, and use that time instead to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or administer to the needy in other ways, the world would be a much better place and we would all have a greater claim to be called Christians.

  • Posted By: oxymoronic @ 05/09/2008 5:01:39 AM

Comment: Joseph Smith once claimed that a messenger from God told him that both good and evil would one day be spoken of him among all people. At the time he made this claim, he was an obscure young man living in a quiet rural area far from the population centers of the world. Whether or not you accept his claims, you can't help but find it remarkable that so many people spend so much time and energy either praising or reviling him and the religion he founded. In his own words: "It caused me serious reflection then, and often has since, how very strange it was that an obscure boy, of a little over fourteen years of age, and one, too, who was doomed to the necessity of obtaining a scanty maintenance by his daily labor, should be thought a character of sufficient importance to attract the attention of the great ones of the most popular sects of the day, and in a manner to create in them a spirit of the most bitter persecution and reviling. But strange or not, so it was, and it was often the cause of great sorrow to myself." (From Joseph Smith's history). Nearly 200 years later, those words still have quite a ring of truth.

Comment: Remember, Christ and Satan are a package deal, you can't believe in Christ and not know that many people spend their lives tearing down everything that is good...in religious debates, political debates, school boards, discussion boards.....

Anyone interested in the truth has full and free access at www.lds.org where every lesson the church uses/teaches is available for review, prayerful consideration or even personal gain (you could build a profitable following with this stuff and raise some excellent youth in the process).

Those that follow the LDS mantra: "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men;.....If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things" ......can turn out to be excellent and caring people.

If you rip on that you are just twisted!!! anyone?

Comment: I will try again. I would like to first clarify that the LDS Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The is capitalized. We carry the name of Christ in our name and are avid Christians or try to be.
The Fundamentalist Mormon Cult are not affiliated with the LDS or Latter-day Saint Church. All the Latter-day Saint individuals participating on T.V. are not Fundamentalist Mormons but are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We do not practice polygamy nor do we separate ourselves from the community. Our members are actively engaged in their communities and many hold political offices. We value the family first and believe in developing our talents and use them to benefit others. Yes, we sometimes use the term Mormons to describe us but we are trying to break from that name due to the Fundamentalists and use LDS or Latter-day Saints. We are really wonderful people and believe in a loving Christ that is a respector of all mankind. Please learn the difference of our Faiths so you will understand you are making serious accusations against those individuals participating in the Reality Shows.

they have much right to exist just as long as they don't come to your house bothering you to join their cult.

leave them be. unless they are having sex with teenage girls like in texas. then round them up and throw them in jail and throw away the key and let them rot. god will take care of the rest and punish those perverts.

but all the mormons who appeared on reality tv brag about being mormon. then their true ugliness manifests for all the world to see. fair game. if you are going to be on tv and proclaim to be a goody-goody mormon then anybody can say what they want about you. even your stupid religion.

but saw it and it's fun. fun making fun of mormons 'cause they are losers.

anybody a mormon fan sout there? speak up. guess not. america isn't ready for the crazy mormons in texas who do crazy things in there bedroom with multiple young teenage wives. and these people came from utah, just another sect or breakaway mormon church. scary. who knows what goes on in utah.

Comment: I wanted to reply to the person who is talking about pologomy and the LDS Church (mormon). There is no association between the two; so you should probably know what you are talking about before you spout out an uneducated opinion.
There are wonderful people competing on Idol and I don't think it should matter what religion you are.
I think mormonism gets so much attention because a lot of people don't know much about it and their curiousity sets in.
Maybe those with negative comments should educate theirselves about the religion before bashing it.
There is good in all religions; so it should matter what church you belong to.
How people act is not necessarily dependant on their particular religion it is dependant on the individual and the choices they make.
      Just my two cents.

my last foster dad was a jew. best dad i could ask for in the whole world. never said anything negative about mormons or muslins or any kind of religion or spirituality. even though he knew i was a former mormon. and he knew i didn't care for the jewish religion. never expected me to convert to his beliefs.

better than the first foster family who were MORMON and just plain EVIL and MEAN. that mormon family is where i was sexually abused and emotionally abused. guess you could say spiritually abused too by the mormon religion.

THANK GOD MY JEWISH DAD SAVED ME FROM THE MORMONS! even if he was only my foster dad. god saw i was suffering at the hands of mormons and saved me and sent me to him to be taken care of and loved in a real loving family (can't say christian home, but just the same).

Comment: My answer to all the people on this blog, who one way or another feel they have the right to attack others regarding their religions or belief is what Jesus told King Herod when he was taken before him: ________, in other words there is no answer to such comments, whatever one may say will always be misinterpreted according to your faith or belief. We are all entitled to our opinions and belief. My personal opinions is, If we all just concentrate on doing what Jesus taught "Love one another", this would be a better world. Instead of attacking each other we should be more tolerant and more concerned in helping each other, after all, if we are all sons and daughters of God, then we are just attacking our brother or sister, our own family. I rather see the good that's in people of any condition in the world. And I try to help anybody in need whenever the opportunity arises no matter their religion, race or nationality. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It's my choice and prerrogative and I have learned that the most important thing in this world is to love people and help others even the ones that don't like you. When you do this they return kidness with kidness. To all of you on this blog I wish you the best . If I am wrong in my belief, then I am wrong and I will deal with it, if I am not what is it to anybody really? In the end it's all a personal choice. It's between God and I and I'll rather let Him be the Judge. I wish that God my bless everybody with everything they need, with love and happiness. Life it's hard enough as it is. Problems and trials there are many. So let's concentrate in what is important lifting each other instead of tearing each other apart. Differences are the most beutiful thing in the world we are all different and that makes for a fun place to live. If we were all carpenters then who would do the singing. If we were all singers who would build the houses. I love to be on this world with all kinds of people. We need to start finding more of what we agree and less of what we disagree. I'm pretty sure everybody wants to be loved and give love. I'm sure we all would like to be helped when we need it. Guys, just take care of each other. That's what God wants, no matter how you believe in him, he would rather you take care of your brother and sister after all they are his children and what parent want to see his children fighting and bickoring all the time. GOD BLESS.

Why is it that seemingly reasonable people that wouldn't dream of saying the N-word, wouldn't express any anti-Semitic sentiment, or wouldn't dare make a polish joke think they can spew ignorance and bigotry toward Mormons? You'd think in this day and age that we, as a country, would be past this. But alas, no. The article simply states that Mormons seem to be hitting a chord that resonates with the feelings of the country. Empirical evidences would suggest that the article is right. I don't recall the article being a referendum on the beliefs of the Mormon faith. Perhaps the haters posting here just needed to have something in print to set them of on an anti-anything rant. Come on folks; come into the 21st century with the rest of us. Hey Newsweek, would you please do an article on disproportionate number of Jews in the entertainment industry (tongue in cheek)? And if you did, do you think there would be an outpouring of anti-Semitic posts such as the anti-Mormon posts related to this article?

A bunch of guys had a party and wrote down stuff they had heard about. None of the books are written by God or Jesus. Just people who believe they spoke to them. Hey I say that documentary! Faith is eye of the beholder. Not in a religion. And not in a church.

        Comment: mda3333,

Your facts would be gladly received that can disprove any part of the bible. I will check back later to see what your write.

The bible are facts, well documented, and written by those who were personally taught by Jesus. They were cannonized about 150 years after his death, even though they were written over a hundred years earlier.

When the Dead Sea scrolls were found after over 1900 years, they actually proved the facts that are written in the bible.

Also, as it is written in scripture, all scripture is God breathed, or learned directly from God or Jesus himself. As I ask, please share with me your proof you have that will prove any part of the Bible as being wrong. God Bless you.....

        • Posted By: mda3333 @ 05/08/2008 18:19:00

Comment: "written by those who were personally taught by Jesus" Doesn't your mere statement make it hearsay? Don't get me wrong. You and everone else can believe in what ever fiction you wish. That's what make us humans special. As stated before God, yes, Bible come on. A few lines of print appear to have profitic experiences and it's supposed to govern all lives. No thank you. My faith is mine, not yours, not any books, and not any churches. As for proof, how can I have any I wasn't there either. I know only my life and what's been presented before it. Everything else is just guesswork.

Comment: Hi Cal! Thank you for thinking so highly of my posts and for referencing them. I will do better than just list some more of the differences, I am going to give you a location to really get at the meat of the Doctrines. Check out this link: http://www.waltermartin.com/
Now a quick, but VERY important blurb about that link. Dr Martin is either Loved or Reviled, depending on which side of Christianity a person falls. He led an amazing fight against the Cults (other religions that hold trappings of Christianity, but markedly differ from its core theology) before he passed away in 1989. Because of his stand on such issues, Christians love him and "Cultists" hate him. If you Google him, you will find an amazing number of websites that denounce him and attack the validity of his Doctorate, or the validity of his Ordination, or any number of wild rumors or speculation. All of these accusations have been dispelled easily (i.e. School records for the Degree, Baptist ordination records, etc). Further, if you look at any of these sites denouncing Dr Martin, you will discover invariably that they are sites established by Jehova's Whitnesses, LDS folks, Christian Scientists, etc.
However, at the end of the day, his credentials are not what is important. What is important is what he said. I have found in my study of various different religions that his research has stood up every time and his Christian theology has been rock solid. But as he often quotes from the Bible: "Test all things, hold fast to that which is good".
The website lists many CDs that can be purchased for 6$ each (I think) that are very in depth lectures on various central doctrines of many cults and the doctrines and defense of the Orthodox Christian Church. I am in no way affiliated with the site, by the way, though one might think so to read this post. :)
Anyway, I hope you find it useful Cal, as well as any others who are interested in learing more.

        Comment: Interested One,

Your Welcome. I will look into that, and I can see from the immediate response, it is exactly as you explained. I have not gone there, but will look into.

I too have also noticed in your posts sharing the differences, not one person refuted any of the points. I have also noticed, on each of my questions, no one gave me a sound answer supported by scripture. Is Hewbrews 1:1 in their Bible? If so, I am curious as to their take on this scripture? I base my faith entirely on the God breathed word of the Bible, and Christ's commands during his teachings. I can not change anyone's view, I can only share in the truth God has given us. Thank you once again, I may see you post again another time.

Have a blessed day, it's off to play golf with my son after school.......

Comment: Walter Martin was exposed many years ago as a CHARLETON AND A FRAUD! This includes the university degrees that he claimed. It turns out that the institutions he claimed to have degrees from never even heard of him. In reality all he had was about two semesters of education from some obscure college. His resume was a total fabrication. This man had NO CREDIBILITY WHATSOEVER! He made a lucrative living off distortions, lies and vicious attacks. Please be better informed.
